Alabama Abortion Center to Close as Scheduled

by Karla Dial, CitizenLink: The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) on Monday denied an application for a license to take over a failing abortion center in Birmingham. The facility will close in mid-May.

Earlier this year, ADPH detailed 76 pages of health code violations at the New Woman All Women center owned by Diane Derzis, and ordered her to surrender her operating license. However, the department said earlier this month the center could stay open if a new operator — who has no ties to Derzis or any other current staff members — had a license application approved by May 4.

Though ADPH received an application for a new license from Marianne Kelley Rain-Water in late March, a background check conducted by the Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF) unveiled the fact that she rents a home from Derzis. Read More
