For the first time in two decades, the Democratic National Committee’s platform committee heard from pro-life advocates wanting the party to moderate its pro-abortion platform that also calls for taxpayer funding of abortions. A pro-life legal group looking for more information into the death of a women who died after having an abortion at Planned Parenthood in Chicago is upset that local Chicago officials are not more forthcoming with a report on what happened. The death of Tonya Reaves, a 24 year-old who died after an abortion at Planned Parenthood’s Loop Health Center in Chicago, has remained a mystery in part because employees at the Chicago Office of the Medical Examiner failed to comply with a request from the pro-life legal group Life Legal Defense Foundation. LLDF is wanting Reaves’ autopsy report, especially in light of the way in which Planned Parenthood failed to call 911 and did not seek emergency medical assistance for Reaves until five hours after the abortion. Before the November elections, pro-life advocates could have a result in one of the dozens of lawsuits taking on the Obama HHS mandate that forces religious employers to pay for abortion-causing drugs for their employees. Federal District Judge Robert H. Cleland of the Eastern District of Michigan has set the date of September 26 to hear oral arguments on whether the federal government should be enjoined from enforcing the HHS Mandate. Amnesty International Continues Pushing Abortion Worldwide
Amnesty International, a human rights organization that used to be abortion neutral, is now using the problem of maternal mortality to advocate for abortion. In a new report, ostensibly on medical care for maternal health, Amnesty calls on governments to repeal abortion laws and conscience protection for medical workers who may object. They also call for public health systems to train and equip health care providers to perform abortions. Amnesty’s “Maternal Health is a Human Right” campaign focuses attention on four countries: Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Peru, and the United States. Amnesty argues that maternal mortality will decrease if it is treated as a human rights issue, if costs to health care are covered by governments, and if a right for women to control their reproductive and sex lives is established.
