Bruce Hausknecht Discusses SCOTUS Marriage Decisions

by Cortland Bobczynski: The U.S. Supreme Court this week issued opinions on two marriage cases involving the definition of the institution as a union between one man and one woman. The Court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act, and dismissed a constitutional California marriage amendment. Prop 8 was passed by more than 7 million voters in the state in 2008.

CitizenLink Judicial Analyst Bruce Hausknecht took some time to answer questions about these decisions to help fill in the gaps where most mainstream media outlets have either misinformed readers, or have left out significant details.

CitizenLink: The news reports have been confusing, mainly calling the decisions a “big win” for gay marriage. Can you break it down for us in plain English?

Bruce Hausknecht: Yes. In the Prop 8 case (Hollingsworth v. Perry), involving the challenge to California’s constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman, the Court decided that it couldn’t decide the big issue: whether the U.S. Constitution forbids the voters of California from defining marriage the way they did. The Court also decided that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which heard the appeal before it got to the Supreme Court, didn’t have the authority to decide the issue either, and erased its 2012 decision, which held Prop 8 unconstitutional. That leaves the case in a posture where the federal district court opinion from 2010 issued by now-retired Judge Vaughan Walker is the only opinion left in the case. He declared Prop 8 unconstitutional, but serious legal questions remain, and more litigation may be on the horizon as a result.

The other case decided this week, U.S. v. Windsor, involved a challenge to the constitutionality of Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined the words “marriage” and “spouse” for purposes of all federal statutes, regulations, and programs. For example, if the Social Security Act describes federal benefits eligible to a “spouse,” it is understood that “spouse” could only be the opposite-sex marital partner in a one man, one woman marriage. The Windsor case actually involved the federal inheritance tax. A lesbian couple, married in Canada, resided in New York, which at that time “recognized” out of state same-sex marriage (they have since legalized it). One of the women died, and her partner inherited her estate. Because her “marriage” was not recognized under federal law (as defined by DOMA), Edith Windsor had to pay over $300,000 in estate taxes she wouldn’t have had to pay if she were the opposite-sex spouse of the deceased woman. This week’s decision allows Ms. Windsor to recover the tax she paid, and the majority opinion, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, declared Section 3 unconstitutional. So now, same-sex couples who are legally married in their state of residence are now entitled to over 1100 federal benefits, rights and protections. It’s still unclear what happens to those federal benefits when those same-sex married couples move to a state that doesn’t recognize such marriages.

CL: Justice Kennedy was once again the swing vote in a 5 to 4 decision in the DOMA case and the author of the majority opinion. He’s written some other controversial opinions over the years. How does this one stack up?

BH: In a nutshell, Kennedy’s opinion is a mess — vague, all over the map with his reasoning, heavy on emotional appeal and short on logic. As in his other big opinions from past years (Lawrence v. Texas, Romer v. Evans), Kennedy leaves both his fellow justices (at least on the conservative side) and legal analysts guessing as to what arguments he’s making and what the effect his opinion will have in future cases. One of the primary purposes of a Supreme Court decision is not only to decide the precise dispute involved in the case, but also to write in such a way that it gives guidance to lower courts that may have to deal with similar types of cases in the future. Kennedy’s opinions, on the other hand, create a bonanza for law professors who thrive on writing law review articles about the hidden meanings of Supreme Court decisions.

I heartily recommend that you read Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent in Windsor. Not only does he ably again (see also his dissents in Lawrence and Romer) dissect Kennedy’s reasoning, but he sounds a chilling warning for all of us. Scalia accuses Kennedy (and the four liberal justices who concurred with Kennedy’s opinion) of deliberately using language and reasoning that sets up a future legal case (perhaps being formulated at this very moment) that would allow those same five justices to take the step that they avoided this time: forcing same-sex marriage on all 50 states.

CL: You mentioned that serious legal questions remain in the Prop 8 case. What’s next for California with regard to Prop 8? Are same-sex marriages going to start up again anytime soon?

BH: You can expect more legal fights over that question fairly soon. In the federal district court opinion from Judge Walker, he declared Prop 8 unconstitutional, but there are serious legal questions left unanswered, such as: 1. Does his decision apply to all same-sex couples who desire to marry in California (not a typical result), or only the two same-sex couples who filed the lawsuit (more typical result); and 2. Does his decision affect California at all, since the state constitution requires all state agencies to support duly-enacted state laws (like Prop 8) unless “an appellate court” renders a decision that the law is unenforceable (which is not the case at the moment). Since Judge Walker’s opinion is not that of “an appellate court,” it looks like there’s an argument that Prop 8 hasn’t been affected at all. But Gov. Jerry Brown has already lit the match by ordering county clerks to start issuing marriage licenses as soon as the federal courts have taken care of the paperwork associated with the appeal.

CL: Both of the laws at stake in these cases were democratically enacted (Prop 8 passed by more than 7 million voters in a state-wide ballot initiative; DOMA passed overwhelmingly by Congress and signed into law by President Clinton in 1996). Yet in each case we saw the executive branch of government oppose, and refuse to defend, these duly-enacted laws. Isn’t that their duty, and what does that say for the future?

BH: Yes, it is their duty to defend such laws in most instances (and these cases should not have been exceptions); yet they both chose to abandon their responsibility and cheer-lead for the other side. Both cases were undermined as a result. Such actions by the executive branch put popularly supported laws at the mercy of the political agendas of those charged with enforcing those laws. That’s not what the Founding Fathers envisioned. The net effect of these cases is to increase the power of both the executive branch as well as the judiciary; citizens and their legislators are the losers.

CL: Are there any positives we can take away from these decisions?

BH: Definitely. First and foremost, we can take heart in the fact that the other side didn’t get what they actually wanted most, which was a 50-state mandate imposing same-sex marriage nationwide. Despite their best arguments, the Court did not find a “right” to same sex marriage in the Constitution, nor did it find that homosexuality is entitled to the same status in our law as immutable characteristics such as race or ethnicity deserve. That in itself is a huge defeat for them. At this moment, no state’s marriage law has been changed by these decisions. Thirty-eight states still define marriage as between one man and one woman. The public policy debate will continue, and we still have the opportunity to make our case that marriage is about more than a couple’s romantic ties — it is about the institution that is the best available for raising children.

Abortionist Killed Baby Born Alive After Abortion, Hid Evidence Cremating Body Some time ago, Live Action published a series on babies born alive after abortions. The series highlighted cases where children were born after abortions and not allowed to survive. One article discussed the accusations made by a former clinic worker against Dr. Tommy Tucker, who has since lost his license after being implicated in the death of a woman at his clinic. Many people in the pro-life movement are aware of the allegations against abortionist Douglas Karpen. Three abortion clinic workers released a video in which they testified that the abortionist has killed many babies who were born alive. Read More

New York Times All But Runs Fundraising Piece for Texas’ Pro-Abortion Wendy Davis It must be nice to be an obscure Democratic state legislator when a major liberal newspaper runs a puff piece in your favor. Such was the case in a June 27 story in The New York Times highlighting the filibuster of a Texas abortion law by Democratic state senator Wendy Davis. In total, the 18-paragraph piece read more like a campaign letter to donors than an actual news article, with the substance of the bill buried in the 16th paragraph of page A23. Read More

HHS Final Rules On Abortifacient Mandate

Bill Donohue, Catholic League: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate forcing Catholic non-profits to pay for abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization will not kick in on August 1, as scheduled; an extension has been granted to January 1, 2014.

There are some changes in the rules worth noting, but they are not satisfactory. Attempts to distance Catholic non-profits from directly providing insurance coverage for these morally objectionable services are admirable, but we’ve been there before: five months ago we were told that more in the way of accommodation was forthcoming, and we applauded that gesture. But now we know that the Obama administration has come up short.

The Catholic community, and many others, are not asking for anything new: all we are asking for is to respect the status quo ante as it applies to this issue. It is not people of faith who sought this confrontation—it is President Obama.

Stand with Texas

Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony List: Unborn babies and their mothers urgently need your help in Texas.

You see, pro-death politicians prevented the passage of a strong pro-life bill with a 13-hour filibuster and staged demonstrations.

They’re taking extreme measures to prevent the Texas legislature from voting on a bill to stop late-term abortions and prevent common-ground regulations on abortion businesses in Texas. Only a few minutes prevented the passage of a law that would protect the lives of mothers and children, and put late-term abortionists such as Douglas Karpen out of business.

But, Gov. Perry is a pro-life champion who refuses to give in to pro-abortion extremists. He’s no friend of the abortion industry, and he’s called the Texas legislature in for another special session to make sure that this pro-woman, life-saving bill gets passed.

Gov. Perry know that an overwhelming majority of Texans (and Americans) reject gruesome late-term abortions. He refuses to turn a blind eye to the babies and women who have been butchered by Texas late-term abortionist Douglas Karpen.

We’ve seen the result in states that turned a blind eye: Monsters like Kermit Gosnell were allowed to prey on poor women and children. Governor Perry and pro-life leaders in the legislature refuse to allow the scenes from Philadelphia to be repeated in Texas.

They need to know that we have their backs, and that we’re praying for them as they stand strong against vicious attacks by the abortion industry.

As I write this email, the pro-abortion lobby is recruiting more Texas legislators to block this bill, and you can bet they will have the same demonstrators from Tuesday’s vote to disrupt the next one.

They’ll do anything – even halt the democratic process – to keep late-term abortions, their biggest money maker, legal in Texas.

The Tragic Reality Of 'Covert Euthanasia'

By Matt C. Abbott, American Life League: >Pope Francis has spoken about the tragic reality of “covert euthanasia.
From a May 6, 2013 Catholic News Service story: While the fight to preserve life is often centered on abortion and capital punishment, the future Pope Francis also warned against a more subtle form of disregard for human dignity—what he called “covert euthanasia.

“In this consumerist, hedonist and narcissistic society, we are accustomed to the idea that there are people that are disposable,” among them, the elderly, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio said in a recently published book.

Citing examples of intentional neglect, the future pope said: “I believe that today there is covert euthanasia: Our social security pays up until a certain amount of treatment and then says ‘May God help you.’”

The book, On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the 21st Century, was released in English April 19 by Image Books, a division of Random House.
I covered the topic of “covert euthanasia”—also known as “stealth euthanasia” and what I referred to as “quiet euthanasia”—in a 2010 column.

Ron Panzer, founder and executive director of the pro-life Hospice Patients Alliance, said that “hundreds of thousands of patients are killed in the world each year in this manner, and no police or district attorney will act to investigate or prosecute.”

Panzer is the author of two e-books, Stealth Euthanasia and Restoring the Culture of Life.

In Stealth Euthanasia, he writes:
Euthanasia advocates do not recognize the possibility of miracles, spiritual healing, or the value of the lives of the severely disabled. The euthanasia advocates at Compassion & Choices know that rogue hospice which has been given a free pass to hasten death by all levels of government, will accomplish their goals of bridging the gap between where we are today and their “final solution.” Now, direct euthanasia is illegal throughout the country and assisted suicide is legalized only in a few states.

Once the P.O.L.S.T. forms or advanced directives are filled in for almost all patients, and health care rationing is stepped up through the government Medicare or Medicaid systems, or rationing done by private managed-care organizations, when a personal health crisis arises, the elderly and severely disabled will have no option other than going into hospice and/or palliative care; treatment will not be available because funding will be cut off for other treatments!

Rogue hospices will accomplish what the Euthanasia Society’s elite never could do: Euthanize the unwanted, elderly, severely disabled, and/or medically-complex chronically ill. You won’t hear about it happening, though. Thanks to HIPAA’s Privacy Shield, the wall of silence will prevent widespread reporting. You will only hear about someone here or there who “went into hospice.” It’s all been very well thought-out to reduce public outcry.
In Restoring the Culture of Life, Panzer writes:The deceptive practices used in many modern medical settings, to manipulate life so that death is imposed while pretending to provide care is the dishonest nature of the evil we call stealth euthanasia. The most common method utilized to impose death on many thousands of patients is “terminal” or “palliative” sedation—sedating the patient permanently while withholding fluids and nutrition. Family members who respect the sanctity of life are misled to believe the patient is naturally sleeping, yet a coma has been medically induced which prevents patients from eating or drinking, and is then continued until death occurs from dehydration. Health care staff even withhold fluids and nutrition from those who had been receiving nutrition and fluids through a tube. Other methods are also used to impose death. Those family members who seek to hasten death are instructed in the means of hastening death and are brought into the circle of conspirators in assuring that death comes unnaturally.

Stealth euthanasia is neither open euthanasia nor assisted suicide, and multiple lies are told by almost all staff members in order to commit this “third way” of imposing death in the healthcare setting. Stealth euthanasia is the most common and widely-practiced form of medical killing within the culture of death today. . . .

Many nations long ago adopted policies towards the vulnerable that are now duplicating those implemented by the Nazis. Forced sterilizations, mandatory abortions, involuntary euthanasia, and involuntary medical experimentation upon the vulnerable are all well-known to be widely practiced somewhere in the world today.
Regarding euthanasia, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches (paragraphs 2277 and 2324):
Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable. Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator.

Mainstream Media Misrepresent Supreme Court Marriage Decisions

Bethany Monk, CitizensLink: Despite mainstream media outlets touting “victories” and “wins” for same-sex marriage following the U.S. Supreme Court decisions Wednesday, the truth is: Not much has changed.

“It appears that the media is more interested in pushing an agenda rather than reporting facts,” said CitizenLink Judicial Analyst Bruce Hausknecht. “The marriage laws of all 50 states haven’t changed by anything the Supreme Court did this week.”

The Court struck down only part of the federal marriage law defining the institution as a union between one man and one woman for the purpose of interpreting and administering all federal laws and programs. Without Section 3, the federal government will not be able to define marriage for its own federal policies and federal laws; it must accept whatever states decide about same-sex marriage.

President Clinton signed The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law in 1996. The ruling does not affect Section 2, which says that no state is required to recognize another state’s redefinition of the institution.

The Court on Wednesday also dismissed California’s Prop 8 case. The constitutional marriage amendment, which defines marriage as a between one man and one woman, was passed by more than 7 million voters in 2008.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals declared it unconstitutional in February 2012 following an appeal from a 2010 federal district court decision, which had previously found it unconstitutional. Wednesday’s decision simply means that the Supreme Court justices say the appeal is void, and in doing so it also “vacated” (erased) the 9th Circuit decision, leaving the federal district court decision as the only remaining decision in this case.

“It’s amazing, almost all the stories are saying (these are) two victories — this is inaccurate,” said Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Senior Legal Counsel Dale Schowengerdt. “For Prop 8, it’s being sent back to the district court for a ‘lack of standing.’ There is no victory in that case.”

Mainstream news outlets, like The Washington Post, are misleading readers with headlines like “Victories for gay marriage.” The L.A. Times’ read “Gay Marriage Wins.”

Reuters has posted a video titled, “Gay rights ruling celebrated in California.” A Denver Post headline reads: “Historic gains in gay rights forged with pair of rulings.”

The Supreme Court’s opinion in the Prop 8 case leaves a confusing legal situation in California . The 2010 decision from now-retired federal Judge Vaughan Walker ruling Prop 8 unconstitutional, which is now the controlling decision in the case, has created a vigorous legal debate over what it actually accomplished. The question now, is whether his decision applies to all of California or only to the two same-sex couples who filed the suit. There is also now an issue whether the California Constitution itself prohibits state agencies from refusing to enforce Prop 8 without a valid appellate court decision in place declaring it unconstitutional.

“Prop 8 is a long way from dead,” Hausknecht explained. “It would be nice to get some objective reporting from the mainstream media rather than sensational headlines we’re seeing, but that’s why CitizenLink is here — to clarify, explain, and provide the truth.”

Thirty-eight states — California included — affirm marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

The District of Columbia and twelve states — Rhode Island, Delaware, Minnesota Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, Washington, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York — have all redefined marriage either by legislation or court order.

No court decision or bill, however, could ever change God’s design for the institution.

“Marriage — the union of husband and wife — is timeless, universal, and special, particularly because children flourish best with a mother and a father,” said John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council. “A total of 38 states and 94 percent of countries worldwide affirm marriage as the union of a man and a woman. In addition every major world religion affirms marriage as the union of a man and a woman. No court decision or public opinion poll can affect that which is evident in biology, logic, common sense and the collective wisdom of human history.”

Don't Mess With Texas Pro-Lifers

Kristan Hawkins, Students for Life of America: Tuesday’s late night filibuster and temporary killing of Texas Senate Bill 5 was an epic moment in Texas abortion history. The pro-life bill would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks – when babies feel pain – and force abortion facilities to hold to the same medical standards as other medical providers – preventing future Gosnell-type situations. But more than 1,000 pro-abortion supporters were bused to the Texas State House by the taxpayer-funded organization Planned Parenthood to create a ruckus and sow confusion.

Despite having the votes of tireless pro-lifer supporters in the Senate, the final vote on the bill was tragically delayed because of a 12+ hour filibuster by pro-abortion State Senator Wendy Davis and shouting and other diversionary tactics of the pro-abortion crowd. This pushed the final vote past the midnight deadline, to 12:03am, three minutes too late to save lives.

All of Twitter was engaged, with users watching a live stream of the proceedings on the floor of the Texas Senate and making the hashtags #SB5 and #StandwithWendy trend. President Barack Obama even weighed in during the evening filibuster tweeting, “Something special is happening in Austin tonight #StandwithWendy.”

Despite not having enough votes to block the bill, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards led the charge, asking abortion supporters to shout and make noise to prevent the vote from happening, at one point even tweeting:

CecileRichardsTweet

Now, I'm obviously extremely disappointed with Tuesday night's results and grateful that Texas Governor Rick Perry has called a 2nd special session to start this Monday, July 1st, to finally get the bill passed.

However, it leads me to an important question: Why don't we see these tactics employed by our side of the issue?

Why don't pro-lifers bus in by the hundreds when state legislatures are debating crucial bills that will save lives? Where are our courageous modern Thaddeus Stevens' in the state houses who will filibuster and do all that they can to make sure the rights of the pre-born and their moms are protected? The majority of Americans are with us on the issues – yet we can't dedicate a day of our lives to standing up for what's right?

I know those folks are out there, but I think our biggest challenge is that they aren’t plugged into the pro-life community and asked by their local pro-life organizations to engage. And honestly, that’s what Students for Life is attempting to change, with over 750 active groups nationwide.

Now, I'm not saying that these kinds of courageous, outspoken pro-life folks don't exist – they certainly do in Texas and the next special session is the perfect time for them to stand up and say, “Don't mess with Texas babies!” We definitely will not resort to the violence the other side employs or the demonic chanting and hysterics, but we can engage and shouldn't be afraid to. After all, think about what we are fighting for.

Abortion is a matter of life and death. Let's start acting like it.'

My pregnancy has flown by, and I can’t wait to see what it will be like for my daughter to have a little brother here on the “outside” to play with! There has been one thing I’ve thought about ever since finding out that our second child is a boy. According to many in America, my husband and I now have the “perfect children” – one girl and one boy. Read More

Abortion and Race: Why is Kermit Gosnell Closed and Douglas Karpen Open? Abortionist Douglas Karpen, who operates two abortion facilities in Houston, Texas, is currently under criminal investigation. And the fireworks began. National pro-life organization Life Dynamics aired the interviews and Texas Rep. King sent a request to Life Dynamics for the unedited raw footage of the interview, which Life Dynamics provided on DVD. Read More

SCOTUS Dings DOMA

ARRA News Service - Today in Washington, D.C. - June 26, 2013:
This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down two major decisions affecting marriage and the established traditions of American society. Literally they removed the lid from "pandora's box" and thumbed their noses at the beliefs and values of the majority of Americans. The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ)  summed up the SCOTUS decisions

The Supreme Court of the United States struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and held that the supporters of Proposition 8 in California did not have standing to defend Prop 8 in federal court.

Links to decisions: DOMA ruling and the Prop 8 ruling.

Essentially, the DOMA ruling means that the federal government must provide the same benefits to same-sex spouses as opposite-sex spouses, if the same-sex marriage has been lawfully performed. In other words, if a gay couple is married in a state that recognizes gay marriage, then the federal government will recognize that marriage on the same basis as a traditional marriage.

The Prop 8 ruling is far more complex, but the bottom line is that it likely clears the way for same-sex marriage in California. It does not, however, have any real implications for marriages outside of California.

Critically, neither ruling establishes a federal, constitutional right to same-sex marriage. Those states that have marriage amendments defining marriage as the union of a man and woman are untouched by these rulings. Those states that recognize same-sex marriage are similarly untouched.

The bottom line? The definition of marriage is reaffirmed as a matter primarily of state law, not federal law. The issue goes back to the states, and for the foreseeable future, states will continue to define the parameters of lawful marriage.

Fr. Frank Pavone: Open Letter To Nancy Peloisi

Fr. Frank Pavone: National Director of Priests for Life, has written an open letter to Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Video details why and how to join this effort and Read and join in the open letter at LettersToNancy.com.  The text of the open letter is latter in this article.
Below is a video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi speaking to reporters on Late Term Abortions and waffling on both abortion and her unwillingness to follow the Catholic position on abortion.
The Open Letter reads:Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Dear Mrs. Pelosi,

Last Thursday, June 13, you were asked a question in a press briefing that you declined to answer. The question was, "What is the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did to a baby born alive at 23 weeks and aborting her moments before birth?"

Given the fact that the Gosnell case has been national news for months now, and that Congress, where you serve as House Democratic Leader, was about to have a vote on banning abortion after 20 weeks fetal age, this was a legitimate question.

Instead of even attempting to answer the question, you resorted to judgmental ad hominem attacks on the reporter who asked it, saying, "You obviously have an agenda. You're not interested in having an answer."

Mrs. Pelosi, the problem is that you're not interested in giving an answer.

Your refusal to answer this question is consistent with your failure to provide an answer to a similar question from me and the members of my Priests for Life staff. Several years ago, we visited your office with the diagrams of dismemberment abortion at 23 weeks, and asked the simple question, "When you say the word 'abortion,' is this what you mean?" In response, nothing but silence has emanated from your office.

In what way is this refusal to address an issue of such national importance consistent with the leadership role you are supposed to be exercising? Public servants are supposed to be able to tell the difference between serving the public and killing the public. Apparently, you can't. Otherwise, you would have been able to explain the difference between a legal medical procedure that kills a baby inside the womb and an act of murder -- for which Dr. Gosnell is now serving life sentences -- for killing the same baby outside the womb.

Moreover, you stated at the press briefing on June 13, "As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I don't think it should have anything to do with politics."

With this statement, you make a mockery of the Catholic faith and of the tens of millions of Americans who consider themselves "practicing and respectful Catholics" and who find the killing of children -- whether inside or outside the womb -- reprehensible.

You speak here of Catholic faith as if it is supposed to hide us from reality instead of lead us to face reality, as if it is supposed to confuse basic moral truths instead of clarify them, and as if it is supposed to help us escape the hard moral questions of life rather than help us confront them.

Whatever Catholic faith you claim to respect and practice, it is not the faith that the Catholic Church teaches. And I speak for countless Catholics when I say that it's time for you to stop speaking as if it were.

Abortion is not sacred ground; it is sacrilegious ground. To imagine God giving the slightest approval to an act that dismembers a child he created is offensive to both faith and reason.

And to say that a question about the difference between a legal medical procedure and murder should not "have anything to do with politics" reveals a profound failure to understand your own political responsibilities, which start with the duty to secure the God-given right to life of every citizen.

Mrs. Pelosi, for decades you have gotten away with betraying and misrepresenting the Catholic faith as well as the responsibilities of public office. We have had enough of it. Either exercise your duties as a public servant and a Catholic, or have the honesty to formally renounce them.

Sincerely,

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life

Nancy Pelosi's Sacrament of Choice--Abortion

Judie Brown, American Life League: A great deal has been written over the years about wayward Catholics in public life and their deconstruction of Catholic teaching. By the same token, we have repeatedly noted the inaction of the Catholic bishops in dealing with this problem in a way that resonates not only with faithful Catholics but particularly with those who, because of their misguided actions, have put their own souls at risk.

The disobedient Catholic, if he does not repent of his failure to adhere to Church teaching, could be writing a one-way ticket to eternal damnation. After all, support for immoral acts as heinous as abortion  is no laughing matter. In addition, the faithful Catholic who witnesses the inability or failure of bishops to do their duty and call these public sinners to task can be scandalized , can begin to lose hope and faith, and in many cases can and does leave the Church.

Most recently we heard the egregious statement of former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. During the course of an interview she denounced a bill dealing with late-term abortion, saying that the question of abortion is “sacred ground.” Pelosi  stated, “As the mother of five children, my oldest child was six years old the day I brought my 5th child home from the hospital, as a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I don’t think it should have anything to do with politics. And that’s where you’re taking it and I’m not going there.” Pelosi went on to accuse The Weekly Standard reporter of having an “agenda.”

What is perhaps most incredible about this exchange, and Pelosi’s explanation of why she holds abortion in such high esteem, is that she is the mother of five children. She is also one of the pivotal players in the game of making the act of abortion anything but what it is. You see, by obfuscating the reality of what abortion does to a baby by hiding behind an unethical law, she is telling her bishops and the rest of us that abortion is a hallowed act.

She is suggesting that the intentional direct killing of a fellow human being is to be perceived as something holy, untouchable, and beyond politics!

Excuse me for feeling queasy in the pit of my stomach, but really, this woman is as misguided and as ignorant of truth as anyone I have ever heard of in my entire life. Yet she claims to be a “respectful Catholic” as she continues to condone the wholesale killing of innocent human beings. And as she repeatedly carries on her little charade, the bishops look the other way.

No wonder the Church is in so much trouble today.

This entire episode calls to mind the madness of the Irish bishops who recently condemned a “morally unacceptable” piece of legislation that would enshrine abortion into Irish law. At the same time, they gave assurances to Catholic politicians who support the measure that they would not “politicize the Eucharist.”

Pelosi says abortion should not be political, yet she continues to politically support the grave moral evil of direct killing of the innocent. It is as though for Pelosi, abortion, not the body of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, is the sacrament.

The Irish bishops, on the other hand, reflect the attitude of their American counterparts by shifting the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist from being the most sacred aspect of a Catholic’s spiritual life into the murky realm of politics so that they do not have to deal with politicians with whom they wish to curry favor later on.

In the interim, babies die, souls are lost, and the demons of hell are building an addition.

Priests Demand Pelosi Renounce Catholicism After Abortion is “Sacred Ground” Comment House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s comments that defending late-term abortions is “sacred ground” to her was apparently the last straw for a national organization of Catholic priests active in pro-life work. “As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. It has been derisively referred to as a death panel because so many have called for it to have health care rationing powers and because its decisions could result in cost-cutting measures that deny lifesaving medical treatment. President Obama Bashes Catholic Education

by Gary Bauer, Cqampaign for Working Families: During this week's trip to the G-8 summit in Northern Ireland, Barack Obama attempted to address the problem of sectarian violence, but seemed to suggest that religious education should be banned. Here's what he said:
"If towns remain divided -- if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can't see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden -- that too encourages division and discourages cooperation."
That statement is absolutely stunning! Whatever point the president was trying to make about sectarian violence in Northern Ireland was completely lost by his absurd example. As Fr. John Zuhlsdorf put it:
"Off the top of my head, I can't think of a foreign visit to an Islamic nation where he told people on his arrival that they shouldn't have madrasas.  Can you? Did he when visiting, say, Israel, say 'You Jews shouldn't have synagogue schools and you Muslims shouldn't have mosque schools.'  I can't remember.  Did he?"
Sadly, Obama's dismissive remark of religious education is illustrative of his administration's hostility to Judeo-Christian values. For example:
  • The Obama Administration tried to kill the voucher program for low-income students in the District of Columbia. The most of the beneficiaries were minority students.
  • While Obama is demanding amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants, he has decided that there is no room in America for one religious homeschooling family that legally applied for asylum. The Obama Administration wants to send the Romeike family back to Germany, even though their children will likely be taken away from them because they refuse to bend to Germany's Nazi-era state education laws.
  • Under Obama, there has been growing hostility toward Christianity in the military.
  • The administration is using Obamacare to browbeat Catholic institutions and other religious organizations and businesses to accept practices that violate their religious beliefs.
From bowing to radical Islamic groups on the FBI's surveillance of mosques and bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia and sending private letters to the ayatollah, the only faith Obama seems to have any genuine tolerance for, in domestic and foreign policy, is Islam.

Obamacare deadline: On August 1st YOU must pay for Abortions.

Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Pray in Jesus Name ProjectA deadline forcing Christians, Churches, and Non-profits to pay for abortions is coming on August 1st, that will cause many Christians to pay fines or violate their conscience by killing innocent children.

"On August 1, the one-year 'safe harbor' for religious charities objecting to provisions of Obamacare will end. Starting then, these nonprofit employers will be forced to violate their religious beliefs or pay large fines. In charge of collecting the fines will be our recently newsworthy friends at the Internal Revenue Service," the Weekly Standard reports.

"Some have tried to create the impression that a compromise was brokered to accommodate the objectors’ conscience concerns. But this is not so.

"The original [abortion funding] mandate included only a narrow religious exemption, for churches and other houses of worship, their 'integrated auxiliaries,' and religious orders, [but not for most Christian employers].

"This outraged many, including even some liberal Catholics. It is no small thing, after all, for plaintiffs of various faiths who believe that life begins at conception to be forced into complicity with murder when they [must] provide their employees a drug whose own label warns it can destroy a fertilized egg. Nevertheless, the final rule was published on February 15, 2012, and went into effect for private companies on August 1, 2012...

"Faced with the public outcry, the government did allow nonexempt religious organizations—hospitals, universities, charities, and so on—a year to get over their scruples and figure out how to comply. That year ends on August 1, [2013], when another 30 or so lawsuits filed by objecting nonprofits will be activated. But now, enter stage left: the IRS.   The way the regulation is written, it is the IRS that determines whether an organization qualifies for full exemption from the HHS mandate."

[Dr. Chaps' comment:  Once again the Church is ordered to murder children, violating not only our own conscience [if we still have one as a nation] but violating the lives of innocent children who have no choice but to die at our hands.  And we should trust the IRS to sort out which of our charities is "religious enough" to be exempt?   No wonder 30 Christian corporations are suing (and some are losing in court) while trying in vain to STOP Obamacare from forcing us to help kill children.]

Let's demand Congress de-fund Obamacare entirely, and stop the IRS from enforcing it.

Jesus prayers targeted by IRS for higher taxes?  Take action.

The IRS fully admits to illegal targeting of conservative groups like Tea Party, Patriots, and 9/12 in their name.  But now the full truth is coming out, confirming many Christian groups were also targeted.
Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham were intimidated by the IRS.
Dr. James Dobson and his son Ryan were likewise threatened with disapproval of 501c4 tax-exempt status. Pro-life groups were threatened by the IRS for refusing to equally promote abortion.

And the worst:  The IRS asked Christian groups to report the content of their prayers, as if they should be disapproved for praying in Jesus' name, or penalized with extra taxes.

"During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) grilled outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller about the IRS targeting a pro-life group in Iowa.

"Their question, specifically asked from the IRS to the Coalition for Life of Iowa: 'Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers,'" Schock declared.

"Would that be an inappropriate question to a 501 c3 applicant? The content of one’s prayers?"
asked Schock. "It pains me to say I can’t speak to that," Miller replied.

[Dr. Chaps' comment:  This is direct evidence the IRS targeted Christians because they pray "in Jesus' name" in public, to punish them with extra taxes, or disapprove their non-profit applications.  Now these same IRS agents control Obamacare, to tax Christian employers who refuse to fund abortion?]
