Stoplight: ‘Salvation’

Stuart Shepard, CitizenLink: A small-town marching band in Ohio is being challenged over T-shirts it printed up bearing the name of this season’s program: “Salvation.”

That title comes from one of the numbers they’re performing called “Salvation is Created” – written a hundred years ago by Russian composer Pavel Tschesnokov.

The students in the Licking Valley High School band wore the black-and-white shirts during the pre-season. The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a threatening letter to the school saying the standalone word “Salvation” is too religious for public school students to wear.

In his Stoplight® commentary, Stuart Shepard explains the extraordinary tie between the composer, the inspiration for the music, and the present confrontation. He also shares the encouraging response by the students.
