40 Days for Life Day 11: Can We Talk?

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Don’t be afraid of a question. It could save a life!

When you pray at a 40 Days for Life vigil, your witness serves as hope in so many ways. The women going into the abortion center, the workers inside and people just driving by all know why you are there.

This prayerful witness can start a dialogue that can save a life – a dialogue that can’t happen if you’re not there.

These short conversations can go a long way ... especially since a life may be at stake.

Jesus told us not to worry about situations like that … because the Holy Spirit will give you the right thing to say. Here are a few examples.

Sacramento, California
Volunteers in Sacramento report a positive response from people who’ve stopped to talk at their 40 Days for Life vigil.

One woman driving by pulled over to tell them about a friend who is considering abortion. The vigil participants said they “loaded her down with information. She went away quite convicted and ready to save a life!

Later that day, a man stopped by and asked about abortions in cases of rape. The 40 Days for Life team offered literature and showed him the developmental stages of babies in the womb.

“He had a change of heart right there,” one of the volunteers said. “He now understands why it is important that abortion not immediately follow on the footsteps of a rape. He wants us to go and speak at his church and bring on more pro-lifers!

Tempe, Arizona
A woman told a 40 Days for Life volunteer that her 21-year-old daughter’s roommate had just been at the abortion facility in Tempe two weeks ago. This young woman was twelve weeks pregnant and was there to have an abortion that day.

But after she walked into the building, she began feeling uneasy. She became frightened and questioned why she was there.

The young woman thought to herself, “What am I doing?” She left the building immediately. Later, she told her roommate, “I had to get out of there! I can’t do this!

Portland, Oregon
A man stopped to chat with Therese, the local leader in Portland. His first questions were about the vigil and what churches the volunteers attend.

Therese was telling him about the impact of abortion on men, and how organizations such as Rachel’s Vineyard help both women and men with spiritual healing in the wake of abortion.

It was then that the man opened up. “He said that about 20 years ago, he was in a situation,” Therese said. “The woman he was with was pregnant, and they were told that their baby had severe birth defects.” He was willing to keep the baby, but had told her it was “her choice.

Thankfully, she made the right decision. Today, that baby has grown up to be a perfectly healthy 19-year-old young man.

“Thanks,” Therese said, “for continuing to pray for the babies, their parents, those who are suffering from an abortion experience, those discerning whether to have an abortion and for the workers in the abortion industry.”

40 Days for Life Day 10: A Common Thread

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: No matter where you go, 40 Days for Life looks like … 40 Days for Life!

With 252 locations in 19 countries to choose from, the surroundings may look different … and the prayers may sound different … but people the world over are united in prayer, fasting and courage.

One common thread runs through every campaign: It’s hard work. 40 Days for Life campaigns challenge us to love our neighbor more deeply – and that’s not always easy.

Here are stories from three countries where that challenge is being met.

Birmingham, England
Very good news from England … as already the Birmingham team reports three saves so far!

One couple told prayer volunteers they had a one-year-old and were worried they couldn’t cope with another child so soon. “They were going to have an abortion,” Isabel, the local leader said, “but now they had changed their minds.”

Another young couple agreed to go to the pregnancy help center … and they decided to keep their baby.

In the third instance, a young woman was inside the facility while her boyfriend waited outside. The prayer volunteers talked to him, Isabel said, “and he decided to go back inside and get his girlfriend out … and they went off all smiles and waves. God is blessing the hard work and prayers of so many people here!”

As the campaign started, Archbishop Bernard Longley led volunteers in prayer. “He ended with a beautiful blessing which extended to all those who would come and pray there during the 40 days,” Isabel said. “God is blessing the hard work and prayers of so many people here.”

Ljubljana, Slovenia
According to the team hosting the first-ever 40 Days for Life vigil in Slovenia’s capital city, their first campaign is going very well.

They’ve heard testimonies from mothers that have been joyful to listen to … and they’re getting positive attention from a number of passers-by, and having opportunities to talk with law enforcement officers and medical personnel. The vigil is taking place in front of the University Medical Center.

The leaders are inviting others in their community “to join us in prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to raise awareness. With God, all things are possible!

Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Steve Karlen, our North American outreach director, helped the team in Calgary kick off their campaign.

“As is the case with many Canadian campaigns,” Steve said, “the situation in Calgary is challenging. Because of a court injunction, the vigil participants are required to stand across the street from the abortion center.”

The volunteers “were delighted to hear how the no-show rate for abortion appointment skyrockets when there are people praying in front of the building.”

This abortion facility is not clearly marked … so it isn’t always clear why there are people praying out on the sidewalks. “Nevertheless,” he said, “the campaign in Calgary knows of at least one baby saved through their efforts, which makes is all worth it for them.

Ben Carson: Ridiculous How Abortion Activists Call Pro-Life People “Anti-Woman”

by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com: Likely Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson opened the conservative CPAC 2015 conference today with an inspiring speech to attendees. During his address, he touched on pro-life themes and complained how abortion advocates label people who are pro-life “anti-woman.”

“I refuse to give into the PC police,” he said.

“If you’re pro-life, you’re ‘anti-woman.’ If you’re pro-traditional family, you’re a ‘homophobe.’ If you’re white, and you oppose a progressive black person, you’re ‘racist.’ If you’re black and you oppose a progressive agenda, you’re ‘crazy.’ And if you’re black and you’re pro-life and you’re pro-traditional family, they don’t even know what to call you. You end up on some kind of watch list for extremists!” he said.

“We shouldn't submit to the PC Police, and to people who are trying to control us by intimidation and by IRS audits and by messing with your job,” the retired neurosurgeon said Thursday. “The only reason they can do that is because we sit silently by. That’s what they want us to do.”

He referred to how the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center recently issued a begrudging apology to him after adding him to an extremist watch list that includes members of the KKK, because of his views against abortion and on other issues.

The biggest question on the minds of attendees regarding Carson is whether the pro-life doctor will officially seek the GOP nomination for president. Like other potential candidates at the conference, Carson wasn't there to announce plans to run — but he made it clear he has no interest in the top pro-abortion Democrat for 2016.

“I’m not ready for Hillary. I’m ready for a country that puts our Constitution on the top shelf. And for those that have any doubt, that includes the Second Amendment. I’m for a country where we take the restraints off the most dynamic economy the world has ever known,” he said.

Not One Democrat Sponsors New Senate Bill to Ban Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com: Members of the U.S. Senate today introduced legislation to completely ban taxpayer funding of abortions. Interestingly, not one Democrat signed on to the legislation, even though at least a couple of Senate Democrats claim to be “pro-life.”

Senators Mike Enzi and Senator John Barrasso, both Wyoming Republicans, joined Senators Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republicans, Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican, and other members of the Senate to introduce key legislation to enact a permanent, government-wide prohibition of taxpayer funding for abortion. Wicker and Roberts are the lead sponsors.

Currently, similar policies, such as the Hyde Amendment, require annual passage and do not apply to Obamacare and Congress must renew those pro-life policies every year or abortion funding will be re-implemented.

The “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” S. 582, also includes a provision championed by Senator Roberts requiring all health insurance plans offered by Obamacare exchanges to disclose coverage of elective abortion procedures and the abortion surcharge embedded into abortion-covering plans. . . . God-given Rights

by Kerby Anderson, View Points: Do our rights come from man or do they come from God? In a contentious interview with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, CNN host Chris Cuomo told the judge that: “Our laws do not come from God, your honor, and you know that. They come from man.” He went on to argue: “Our rights do not come from God.”

These statements would certainly surprise and dismay the founders of the country and the framers of our government. The Declaration of Independence rests on the foundation that our rights are God-given. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Starting with the Declaration and continuing on to our present day, we have lots of documents, as well as prominent leaders, who contend that our rights are God-given and are not given to us by government.

In this commentary on the statements by Chris Cuomo, Peter Wehner says, “It is one thing to argue that our rights are not God-given and that the Declaration, the founders, [Abraham] Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and so many other great documents and figures in American history were wrong to claim they were. Those who hold this view, of course, need to explain the basis for believing in and protecting unalienable rights and human dignity if they are not grounded in the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.”

David Barton, in his recent commentary, suggested one reason Chris Cuomo made these statements. It was because Cuomo is 44 years old. Like others who graduated from American schools in the last few decades, he and millions of other students were never taught the historical basis of our government.

This controversy provides another reason why a number of states have enacted laws or are considering bills to require high school students to pass a citizenship test before graduation. Sadly many naturalized citizens know more about our history and government than native-born Americans. Chris Cuomo’s comments demonstrate that.

40 Days for Life Day 9: Bad Weather ... Good News

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: There are only a few 40 Days for Life vigil locations having tolerable weather this week. But wouldn’t you know … it’s the places with the worst weather that are seeing some of the most amazing blessings right now!

In really bad weather, schools close ... offices close ... and some businesses close, too – even abortion centers.

So if God put shoveling snow on your schedule today, smile! You may be snowed in … but so is the abortionist!

McKinney, Texas
Icy Texas roads have been a big concern for vigil volunteers in McKinney this week … so Paul, the local leader, has stressed safety. “On a positive note,” he said, “Planned Parenthood closed due to weather for two days and is already scheduled to be closed Friday. That means Planned Parenthood is closed all week!

Earlier in the campaign, it wasn’t snow and ice but rain that concerned Paul and his team. As they were arriving for an event last week, they saw rain in the distance. “We barely had the books sheltered under the plastic table before it started raining buckets,” he said. “Instead of setting up the sound equipment, we bundled up and prayed.”

People started showing up in the rain … but right before the event was set to start, the rain stopped. Eventually, more than 50 people turned out.

“I may have temporarily lost my voice by the end but everything went pretty smoothly even without a sound system,” Paul said. “After our closing prayer, a volunteer announced that someone had bought pizza for everyone. God is good!

Roanoke, Virginia
Sean, the local leader in Roanoke, sent out a great message: “Zero abortions this week!

“The snow came down hard and canceled our kick-off prayer rally,” he said, “but the snow did not cancel our prayers.”

And then it kept on snowing. And this time, the weather shut down Planned Parenthood.

“Because Planned Parenthood was closed,” Sean said, “women who were scheduled to have an abortion last week were not able to keep their appointments in Roanoke.”

Fullerton, Maryland
It was yet another cold day as 40 Days for Life volunteers in Baltimore’s Fullerton area rallied outside the abortion center. The local leaders shared some thoughts that were offered by the speakers at the event.

Pastor Dale South observed that the Apostle Paul’s preaching in Ephesus was “bad for business” for the idol makers. “Our hope here as we gather for these 40 days,” he said, “is that we will rightly be accused of being bad for business for the abortion business ... but that it will be very good for the mothers and babies.”

“As a senior in high school I gave a speech on abortion,” Sherrie Palmateer told the group. “Unknown to me, a classmate was pregnant and considering abortion. Because of my speech, she did not abort her baby… and I just recently saw her 31-year-old daughter and grandchildren on Facebook. We never know who we are affecting. God knows. He just asks us to be His voice.”

Congress Acts To Protect Chaplain Punished For His Faith

Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Praying In Jesus Name: "U.S. Army Chaplain Capt. Joseph Lawhorn has been wrongly disciplined for offering spiritual guidance, including biblical references, during a suicide prevention meeting, said 24 senators and representatives in a letter," reports The Christian Post.

"We are concerned that this disciplinary action violated First Amendment free speech protection that are undergirded by state reflected in the FY2013 and FY2014 NDAAs, along with the accompanying DoD regulations," states the letter from the senators, sent to Army Secretary John McHugh.

"In fulfilling his duties as chaplain, Captain Lawhorn shared both his personal struggle with depression as well as biblical references and materials in accordance with the views of his endorsing agency and complementary to personal convictions."

Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty said, "Regrettably, military chaplains have been increasingly under fire simply for fulfilling their important and time-honored role in supporting our service members. This is just one more incident that sets a bad precedent, effectively gagging chaplains and keeping service members from getting the support they need."

It is not a crime for any Chaplain to share his faith, period.

In fact, both NDAAs of 2013 and 2014 strengthened the rights of all troops to publicly talk about their religious views.

But the Pentagon is violating the law, and ignoring Congressional demands they comply.

Sadly, Chaplains are still under attack, and DO NOT yet have positive protections for the right to pray "in Jesus' name" since that amendment failed and was struck by Senate Democrats in December of 2014.

40 Days for Life Day 8: Abortion Numbers Drop

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: When we held the first-ever 40 Days for Life campaign in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion center in Bryan/College Station, Texas back in 2004, local abortion numbers dropped by 28%.

God used those 40 days of prayer, fasting and 24-hour vigil in that community to bring 1,000 people into the pro-life movement for the very first time.

That was just the beginning. After much prayer and persistence ... that Planned Parenthood facility closed its doors. Today, that building serves as the location for our international headquarters.

Prayer transformed that community ... and it can transform your community.

That facility is just one of 60 abortion centers that have closed following 40 Days for Life campaigns outside their doors. These closures do not happen overnight. But they do show the power of prayer.

Could your city be the next to become abortion-free?

Spring Valley, New York
“Even though the sacrifice is great,” said Eileen, the local coordinator in Spring Valley, “there is great joy in saying yes to God’s will.”

The first week of this 40 Days for Life campaign has been quite cold, but volunteers have gathered to pray each day – generally standing in the snow – across from the Planned Parenthood center. There is much at stake here.


Eileen said there has been a steady decline in the number of abortions in Rockland County, where Spring Valley is located. In 2006, the year before 40 Days for Life started, the county recorded 704 abortions. By 2012, that number had been cut in half ... to 351.

Of course, Eileen said, “one abortion is too many and we have much more work to do. But we are witnessing the direct result of prayer power!”

Greenville, South Carolina
The 40 Days for Life team in Greenville says so far, this campaign has been “amazing” … as unusually cold weather has swept into the area.

Right before their big weekend event, a driver leaving the abortion center stopped to deliver a message to the people praying – a woman who had come for an abortion changed her mind.

Then during their rally, they learned that two more babies had been saved the day before.

“Our prayers and sacrifices – especially braving this extremely cold weather – are being honored by God,” said one of the volunteers. “Praise the Lord for all his blessings!”

Overland Park, Kansas

Add Overland Park to the list of cities where volunteers have described the first week of the campaign as “very cold.”

But Wendy, the local leader, said “single digits could not dampen the spirits of the faithful who gathered on the sidewalk outside the Center for Women’s Health abortion facility … and there is much excitement and enthusiasm.”

Volunteers are praying on the public sidewalks surrounding the abortion center. Wendy says by their presence, they are “proclaiming faith that God is taking the ground and that abortion will end here.”

40 Days for Life Day 7: Can't I Just Pray At Home?

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: One of the most common questions we get is:

Why do I have to go out to the abortion facility to pray
for an end to abortion? Can’t I pray at home? The Lord
hears us wherever we pray.

That’s true! We do need to pray as much as possible – wherever we are – for an end to abortion. But there are specific reasons why your prayers ... and the visible sign of your witness when you pray at the place where the love of God is so desperately needed ... are vitally important.

Showing up matters! That’s why feeding the poor and conducting medical missions cannot be done from home. Where we take our prayers makes a difference ... especially for the unborn, who have no voice but yours.

Las Cruces, New Mexico


“Our prayers and presence are working,” said one of the 40 Days for Life volunteers in Las Cruces.

>Vigil participants were holding a sign that says “Pregnant? Help is available” when a young man walked up. At first, he seemed a bit confrontational. But after a while, he warmed up and started telling his story.

His girlfriend was pregnant and they had been to Whole Woman’s Health for an initial consultation. They were thinking about abortion, but had no one to talk to and didn’t know what to do.



“He told me he’s never liked abortion and has appreciated our 40 Days for Life campaigns,” the volunteer said. But the young man explained that he just doesn’t feel ready for children.

“I congratulated him and told him that just the fact that he is worried aboutbeing a good dad already makes him a better father than half of the guys out there,” the 40 Days for Life team member told him.

They kept talking, but the young man’s bus pulled up and he quickly had to leave. But he took information about local pregnancy help resources, which he said was exactly what he and his girlfriend needed.

“By this point he was beaming and said we were getting him excited about being a dad,” said the volunteer. “Please pray for this young man, his girlfriend and their beautiful child.”

In Memorium
We need to acknowledge the passing of two men who did so much for this movement, Dr. John Willke and Brother Paul O’Donnell. Their contributions were many ... and they will most certainly be missed.


Dr. Willke was the president of the Life Issues Institute and had once led the National Right to Life Committee. He had set aside his medical practice to devote all of his time and energy to the pro-life cause. He died at his home in Cincinnati Friday at the age of 89.


Brother Paul, the superior of the Franciscan Brothers of Peace, was a founder of Pro-Life Action Ministries and, among other things, served as board chairman of the Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network. He died in his sleep Friday in St. Paul, Minnesota at the age of 55.

We are thankful to God for the service both of these good men offered to the least of their brothers and sisters. We pray for their families and all who will miss them ... and most especially that the Lord will welcome them to their eternal home.

Norristown, Pennsylvania
Volunteers spoke to a mother leaving the Planned Parenthood facility in Norristown. “She had a pregnancy test,” said Rita, the local coordinator, “and is going to keep her baby!

It was Day 1 of the campaign – Ash Wednesday – and the counselor who spoke to the woman said she was leaving Planned Parenthood … and heading straight to church.

“The Norristown Planned Parenthood is very, very busy,” Rita said. “It was a dangerously bitter cold day today … God bless the faithful prayer warriors who have such warm and loving hearts.”

Montgomery, Alabama
On Day 1 of the campaign, volunteers watched – and prayed – as 20 women arrived for appointments at the abortion center in Montgomery. They knew it would be challenging. Wednesday is abortion day.

The volunteers did have some joyful news to report. Two mothers changed their minds and chose life for their babies. Michelle, the local leader, said “What an awesome way to begin 40 Days for Life!”

“May God continue to bless our efforts to love the moms and their preborn children,” Michelle said, “and bring hope to the hopeless.”

Houston, Texas
The Houston Coalition for Life operates a mobile pregnancy help center on the street outside the city’s huge Planned Parenthood abortion mega-center. While they are able to connect with many women, the sad truth is that others insist on keeping their appointments for abortions.

Volunteers spoke to a woman who came from out of town to have an abortion ... so her family wouldn’t know about it. “She was extremely upset, but unwilling to come to the bus and didn’t want to change her mind,” said one of the local leaders. “She will probably be suffering a lot tonight.”

A second young woman saw the ultrasound of her baby, but is still thinking about abortion. She has had more than one previous abortion.

However, a third woman who was considering abortion was willing to listen. She is older, and has a number of children. After seeing her child on the sonogram, she is now planning to have her baby.

Please keep all of these women in your prayers.

“God uses our visual witness to save lives,” said one of the volunteers. “Come be a part of this union of prayer and action ... working toward an end to abortion!

Pro-Life Group’s Graphic Signs Spark Debate Over Images of Abortion

by Kate Scanlon: A recent pro-life protest in Columbus, Ohio, drew a heated response from a neighbor upset by the group’s graphic depiction of aborted fetuses on signs across from his house. It’s also sparked questions of how far is too far when it comes to showing images of abortion.

The signs of demonstrators, led by pro-life group Created Equal, were destroyed by an unidentified man outside Beechcroft High School in Columbus earlier this month.

“Get them off or I’ll take them,” says the man, who identifies himself as a homeowner across the street from the school. A video released by the group shows him kicking, bending and breaking the corrugated plastic signs, then throwing them into the street, despite oncoming traffic.

In the video, the man can also be seen shouting at demonstrators, and taking the group’s signs out of the hands of Jami Beer, Created Equal’s director of campus outreach. He can be heard objecting to the graphic nature of the signs, which depict what Beer called “the aftermath of abortion”—the remnants of aborted children.

Beer said that she doesn’t like looking at the graphic images either, but they need to be shown so people can see what abortion really looks like.

“There is no way to make abortion look pretty,” said Beer. “The nature of abortion is disturbing. High school students are old enough to have abortions. They have a right to know what it looks like.”

While many pro-life organizations are united in their desire to peacefully protest, the use of graphic images is a point of debate within the movement.

Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life and the co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness campaign, told The Daily Signal that she supports “showing the victims of abortion” during pro-life demonstrations.

“These images have value,” said Morana. “As Father Frank Pavone says, ‘America will not reject abortion until America sees abortion.’”

Morana said that she has participated in demonstrations similar to Created Equal’s outside of high schools. She’s witnessed firsthand students’ reaction to the images.

“Young people respond to it,” said Morana. “When they are shown the truth, they no longer support abortion.”

Morana stressed that free-speech rights allow all causes to peacefully protest. “You can disagree, you cannot censor,” she said.

Mallory Quigley, communications director at Susan B. Anthony List, told The Daily Signal she could only think of one instance in which her organization used a graphic image. The group sent an email using a crime-scene photo from the murder trial of Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, and that they did include a disclaimer in the subject line.

“In that particular instance it was valuable,” said Quigley. “Sometimes people need to see it to believe it.”

Abby Johnson, a former abortion clinic employee and founder of And Then There Were None, a ministry that helps abortion workers leave the industry, generally discourages the use of graphic images. In her experience, they do more harm than good.

In remarks printed on Patheos.com, Johnson writes:

I watched them be ineffective for many years … from inside the abortion clinic. A perspective that most do not have. I watched for several years as women would literally run away from those holding graphic signs. They would come into my office and ask us why those people were holding them. We used that as an opportunity to point out how crazy the prolifers were and that they would do anything to prevent women from making the choices they felt they needed to. It was an AMAZING way for us to build camaraderie inside our clinic.Created Equal, the group at the center of the Columbus incident, stands by its use of the graphic images—and even got an apology from the man who destroyed its signs.

“In a culture killing its children, unfortunately sometimes abortion advocates act violently against those who defend the children. Nevertheless, we refuse to be intimidated into silence,” Mark Harrington, the executive director of Created Equal, said in a statement.

In an interview with The Daily Signal, Beer, the woman who was confronted in Columbus, said the mission of Created Equal is to “raise a generation of 21st century preborn defenders,” which includes ministering to high school and college students.

Beer said Created Equal frequently exercises its First Amendment rights to protest abortion on public property.

Not showing the graphic images, she said, “silences the voices” of the 2,900 children the Guttmacher Institute estimates are aborted every day in the United States.

Beer said that during the incident, she did feel that she and her group were in danger, and called the man’s behavior “threatening” and “angry.”

Columbus’ 10TV declined to identify the man in the video, but reports that he describes himself as neither pro-life nor pro-choice but rather offended by the graphic images used. The news station reports he is willing to financially compensate Created Equal for the damage. Beer said that the signs destroyed were worth about $120.

Beer said that charges had been filed against the man, but were “on hold” because of his apology.

The Dangerous Consequences of the Morning-After Pill

Brian Fisher, Online for Life: We are told by the media and our culture today that abortion is a woman’s issue and men should stay out of the debate. After all, abortion on demand empowers women, gives them options to navigate a “man’s world,” and allows them to throw off the shackles of an unwanted pregnancy. At least that’s what abortion supporters tell us…

Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. As I explain in my book Abortion: The Ultimate Exploitation of Women, legalized abortion was first promoted and propagated by men for the purpose of controlling and oppressing women. Women were only pulled into the effort to legalize abortion once men realized it would expedite the process.

Most people cringe when they hear that truth. But the facts speak for themselves. Abortion was first legalized in an effort to curb population growth, eliminate “substandard” races (known as eugenics), and give men a “get out of jail free card” to use if and when they got a woman pregnant and weren’t prepared for fatherhood.

Now it’s been 43 years since abortion was legalized in America, and we can clearly see that the intended results have been achieved. Approximately fifty-seven million citizens are missing from our society. According to the latest Abortion Surveillance report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in the 10 states in which the most abortions were performed during 2011, approximately 60 percent of all aborted babies were black or Hispanic.

A very troubling trend is the latest string of cases in which men forced women to unwittingly take abortion-inducing drugs. Most recently, Jarod Rebuck, a 25-year-old Indiana man, was charged with attempted feticide after secretly mixing abortion-inducing herbs into his pregnant girlfriend’s drink. This story followed on the heels of a similar case in Florida, where John Welden, 29, tricked his girlfriend into taking an abortion pill by telling her it was an antibiotic. An even more extreme case took place in Las Vegas, where a 21-year-old man reportedly provided the weapon and arranged to have his girlfriend shot in the head because she refused to take the morning-after pill.

The fact is, most Americans will never hear the reality of these stories because the media will attempt to sweep such disturbing strides toward “progression” under the rug. And truth be told, recently enacted laws will only enable further acts of violence against pregnant women.

In April 2013, a New York federal judge ruled that a woman of any age should be allowed to purchase the carcinogen-laden Plan B abortion pill without parental consent or other restrictions. Indeed, the morning-after pill, a high-potency birth control pill that can induce a spontaneous abortion at the earliest stages of pregnancy, can be bought in any drugstore right next to the candy and soda aisles.

So what does this law have to do with men and their oppression of women? Virtually everything.

What abortion on demand did for boyfriends and husbands, the unrestricted availability of the morning-after pill now does for sexual predators and abusers, allowing them to walk away from their crimes scot-free.

Just imagine an adult male predator who sexually molests a 14-year-old girl. Without any parental consent or physician’s script, the perpetrator can give the girl enough money to go to her local pharmacy and purchase the morning-after pill, no questions asked.

Think about it: a 14-year-old girl isn’t permitted to take an aspirin at school without parental consent, yet she can take an abortifacient — a pill that kills her unborn child and may cause her physical harm — without anyone’s knowledge.

And what about the man involved? He walks away scot-free to abuse again.

The morning-after pill — and all other forms of abortion — is the ultimate liberator of men. They can continue to have sexual relations with multiple women and avoid all responsibility. They can even prey on minors, and, thanks to the convenience of a pill that’s now as accessible as a candy bar, they can walk away without any legal or moral repercussions.

So while abortion supporters celebrate the fact that girls of any age can purchase the morning-after pill, those of us in the real world understand exactly what’s at stake. Unrestricted access to the morning-after pill only exacerbates the male oppression that abortion on demand put into motion in our nation. In essence, this so-called attempt to “liberate women” from the shackles of pregnancy actually places them into a type of bondage where men call the shots and then walk away from sexual abuse unscathed.

Catharine MacKinnon, an influential feminist scholar, summarized the situation best when she wrote: abortion “does not liberate women; it frees male sexual aggression.”

40 Days for Life Day 5: Abortion Is Not "Safe"

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Abortion is often accepted blindly ... masked by vague terms such as “a woman’s choice” or “safe and legal.”

Today, we are reminded of the truth that is hidden behind the slogans. Abortion ends the life of an innocent human being who has no choice in the matter – and it can therefore never be described as “safe.”

But abortion is also not safe for the mother.

During a 40 Days for Life campaign, prayer volunteers outside abortion centers around the world sometimes witness this grim reality. We need to be there – to pray ... and to offer life-affirming alternatives to women who are told that abortion is “health care.”

Pensacola, Florida
The volunteers praying at the 40 Days for Life vigil were suddenly presented with a reason to pray even harder. An ambulance arrived at the abortion facility, and emergency teams were called to treat a woman there.

Vigil participants say it was an unusually busy day at the abortion business and the parking lot was quite full.

“Abortion hurts women,” reads a statement from the Emerald Coast Coalition for Life in Pensacola. “Abortion is not safe. Local pregnancy resource centers provide the best care for mothers in need.”

We join the Pensacola team in asking for your prayers for the woman who was taken away in the ambulance.

Roswell, Georgia
40 Days for Life participants in Roswell are wondering if this was a mistake … or God’s plan.

The story starts out with a woman who got lost on the way to the 40 Days for Life vigil location. It seems she took a wrong turn when she walked out of the lot where volunteers have to park.

By the time she got in touch with other volunteers to come pick her up, she had walked about two miles in a big loop and was still a mile away from the vigil.

“She cheerfully remarked that now she would not need to go to the gym today,” said Kateri, the local leader in Roswell. “She certainly carried her cross for God and the babies, walking up and down hills – in below-zero wind chill – and faithfully trying to reach the vigil location.”

But, the volunteers said, this may not have entirely been a mistake. The whole time she walked, she was carrying her sign. It read “Hurting after abortion?” and listed contact information for anyone looking for help. Many drivers were reading her sign and beeping their horns and waving.

“Was there someone on those roads she walked who desperately needed the hope and healing offered by Christian post-abortion counseling?” Kateri asked. “We’ll never know for sure, but God works in mysterious ways. I think He used her to take that message of hope to people who would never have seen it otherwise. Praise God for that!”

40 Days for Life Day 4: Any Given Saturday

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Saturday is often the busiest day of the week at abortion centers. Some estimates say that there are as many as 8,000 abortions in the United States alone on any given Saturday.

Steve Karlen, our North American outreach director, knows the impact your presence can make every day of the week. He recently traveled south from his home in Wisconsin to several locations in Alabama ... but warmer weather was nowhere to be found. Here’s Steve’s report.

Birmingham, Alabama

The Birmingham kickoff was a great event in freezing cold weather, so it was extra encouraging to see our Alabama friends turn out in force for this candlelight vigil. The volunteers pray outside a Planned Parenthood center that had been closed for nine months before reopening. It no longer does surgical abortions, but lives are still being lost to chemical abortions.

Both Bishop Robert Baker and Bishop Emeritus David Foley came out to pray. Joy Pinto of EWTN was at the event, and Fr. Terry Gensemer of the Charismatic Episcopal Church was the MC.

The evening started with a short prayer service including readings from scripture. It ended with the signing of Amazing Grace as the participants laid flowers on the sidewalk in front of the abortion center.

Mobile, Alabama

Mobile, on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, was also pretty brisk with a cold wind coming in. We had quite an enthusiastic crowd for the event at the vigil location outside a Planned Parenthood abortion center.

I was told there is a law still on the books that dates back to the civil rights movement, limiting the number of people who can stand together on the public sidewalk. If that’s true, no one’s trying to enforce that law … and the attorneys who work with the local team here believe the ordinance is basically unenforceable.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama

As I pulled up to the Tuscaloosa kickoff rally, I assumed I’d be alone. It was in the 40s and pouring rain! Nevertheless, we had about 20 people, mostly University of Alabama students, out for a somewhat truncated kickoff event.

A local priest opened us in prayer. There was music provided by some students who brought a guitar out in the cold, rainy weather. I even got splashed by a passing car.


What is great about this vigil — in addition to people coming out in cold rain — is that the abortion center is temporarily closed. But the faithful still came out to pray with the goal of a permanent shutdown.

Obama Clueless On ISIS Recruitment

by Bill Donohue, Catholic League: On February 16, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that "lack of opportunity for jobs" is one of the most prominent "root causes" driving ISIS recruitment efforts. Two days later, President Obama addressed the same issue, echoing Hart's explanation.

After acknowledging that "poverty alone does not cause a person to become a terrorist," Obama immediately cited the central role of "economic grievances." He was explicit: "When people, especially young people, feel entirely trapped in impoverished communities—where there is no order and no path for advancement, where there are no educational opportunities, where there are no ways to support families....[this is what] makes those communities ripe for extremist recruitment."

Today's New York Times quotes some Muslim experts on this subject. One said that in his experience the young men drawn to join ISIS "came from a variety of family backgrounds." Another said, "They can come from every ethnic, socioeconomic group, any geographic area." In short, both reject the class analysis favored by the Obama administration.

Trying to get to the "root causes" of ISIS recruitment efforts makes good sense. Unfortunately, the left-wing lens used by the Obama team renders them blind to reality. It is not structural conditions that draw young men to join ISIS—it is psychocultural factors.

Laurie Goodstein, who wrote the Times article, correctly stated that many are enticed to join ISIS because "they feel alienated by life in the West and admit that they have been vulnerable to the Islamic State's invitation to help build a puritanical utopia." Similarly, one of the experts she mentions describes the typical recruit as "an alienated young Muslim with a black-and-white worldview, looking for purpose and adventure."

Obama and his staff need to exchange their Marxist-infected glasses with a pair that allows for a psychocultural vision. Jobs are not the answer.

40 Days for Life Day 3: New Campaigns, New Languages (Feb 2015)

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Abortion knows no borders. It will go anywhere ... and the same goes for 40 Days for Life!

Volunteers in 19 countries are participating in the current campaign, including three nations that are on the list for the first time: Ethiopia, Romania and Slovenia.

Robert Colquhoun, the international outreach coordinator for 40 Days for Life, first witnessed the campaign during a trip to Canada. When he returned home to England, he organized the first British vigil ... and has since helped 40 Days for Life spread in four continents.

Leading a campaign is hard work ... and there can be unique challenges in different parts of the world. Here’s a look at two new vigil locations where faith has led the way.

Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Julia, the local leader of the first 40 Days for Life campaign in Romania, said the kickoff rally drew representatives from Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant faith communities.

“The Greek Catholic bishop attended the whole event, including our short vigil at the abortion facility, which is also the second largest maternity hospital in the city,” she said. The bishop read from John 17:13-21 and offered his blessing.

Julia said one of the priests who attended the kickoff serves as a chaplain at the hospital, and often visits the women in the abortion area to offer counseling and prayer. He and his wife signed up to pray four hours a week at the vigil.


“Three major local media outlets covered the event, including a live interview on the 6 pm news,” she said. “We were in shock to see how optimistic they were about the message and this movement.”

Julia had expected negativity from the media, but that hasn’t been the case. “Another media outlet,” she said, “specifically asked that we arrange to have a big group present for the filming in order to have a strong and convincing message.”

< The campaign has already received commitments from 200 volunteers. “Some teachers will be attending with their whole classes, either during or after school hours,” she said.

Julia and her team anticipate 40 Days for Life growing in Romania. “Already, Bucharest and five other cities are looking to join the next campaign!”

Gloucester, England

Robert Colquhoun helped kick off the 40 Days for Life campaign in Gloucester. “We had about 25 there for the event,” he said. “They are a first-time campaign and have been working hard to get new people on board.”

Members of the clergy attended the kickoff, as did members of the local Polish community.

“We are delighted a campaign is happening in Gloucester,” Robert said. “Let’s pray God brings them many blessings.”

Obama Admin Tells Christian Groups They Must Refer Women for Abortions

Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com: The Obama administration is at it again — attempted to force Christian groups that conduct international relief work to refer women for abortions.

“The Obama administration is getting ready to issue new rules requiring charities to provide abortions to child refugees entering the US without their parents. Faith-based groups say this is a contravention of the rights of parents and a violation of the conscience rights of faith-based groups helping resettle the children,” says Susan Yoshihara of the pro-life group C-FAM.

“The rules require faith-based providers to make referrals for emergency contraception, partner with groups which provide abortion, or notify the federal government which would make arrangements for the abortion. If groups do not do so, they are not eligible for federal aid,” she said.

Yoshihara says Catholic organizations affected by the proposed rules conveyed their objection to the new rules to the Obama administration.She said the groups’ said their comment on the proposed rule is that the requirement to perform, partner or refer for abortion or contraception are a violation of conscience rights.

They are required to comply no later than June 24, 2015.

Fortunately, there is something pro-life Americans can do about the Obama administrations abortion push.

“The public has until Monday to comment on the fast-tracked new rules, which were issued on Christmas Eve. The administration says it would be “contrary to the public interest” to wait “until a public notice and comment process is complete.” The administration also asserts that no Congressional review is required and that there is no issue with federalism or any impact on families in the new guidance,” she said.

Yoshihara indicates the UN is putting pressure on nations to force groups to make abortion referrals.

This isn’t the first time the Obama administration has pushed abortion on Christian groups helping women in need. The Obama Administration put abortion ahead of human trafficking twice — by denying a grant to the Catholic bishops to help victims because they wouldn’t promote abortion and by refusing to investigate how the Planned Parenthood abortion business covered up potential cases of sex trafficking.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had previously received a five-year $19 million grant to help victims of sex trafficking during the administration of pro-life President George W. Bush. Sensitive to how women are exploited in the sex industry, the Catholic bishops prohibit any subcontractors from using the funds to pay for or promote abortions. Instead, the Catholic bishops provide comprehensive case management services to survivors including medical and mental health services.

While the Obama administration extended the contract briefly in March, the bishops were notified that it would not be renewed. Instead, Obama officials awarded the grant to three other groups (Tapestri of Atlanta, Heartland Human Care Services of Chicago and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants of Washington) — even though the bishops have helped more than 2,700 victims with the funding.

40 Days for Life DAY 2: Cold Opportunities (Feb 2015)

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life:: In some areas, a warm 40 Days for Life vigil is hard to find right now.

Of course, if you want to be certain of avoiding cold weather, you could visit a 40 Days for Life location in Australia, Nigeria or Brazil!

But please do keep in mind that the invitation to participate in 40 Days for Life is a call to sacrifice. Sacrificing your time – and warmth – can make quite an impression on a mom who’s arriving for an abortion.

It’s often the case that the locations with the worst weather have more women turn around and leave without having an abortion. The willingness of strangers to be out in miserable conditions speaks to the heart of women at that most crucial moment.

Your peaceful presence shows a sacrificial love they simply will not get when they enter the abortion facility. Here are a few cold-weather locations where the frigid temperatures help provide an opportunity to save lives.

Columbia, Missouri
"Snow and hot chocolate” is the subject line of the email Kathy, the local leader, sent to 40 Days for Life participants in the Columbia area.

“Great opening rally,” she said, “sometimes sprinkled with snow flurries! We had a wonderful uplifting evening as we all gathered together on the sidewalk, sang, prayed and shared hot chocolate and cookies.”

The volunteers prayed that God would help them be present in Christ’s name to the moms who would be coming for abortion information during the campaign. The Planned Parenthood center this team prays outside of no longer does abortions … but it does refer women to other facilities that do.

“It was pretty dark, but our hearts were filled with love and joy and peace,” Kathy said, as the group “gathered in prayer and thanksgiving for the many blessings God has showered upon 40 Days for Life in Columbia. Below freezing weather doesn’t keep us away!”

Anchorage, Alaska
The Anchorage 40 Days for Life team knows cold weather! They pray daily outside a Planned Parenthood abortion center.

Jon, the local leader, issued a call for prayer to Anchorage volunteers. “May we accept the urgent privilege of speaking gently and lovingly to parents for the most innocent and vulnerable, their unborn children.”

He noted that according to state health department statistics, an average of 30 children die in abortions each week in Alaska.

“When we humbly place ourselves in our Father’s hands to be used for life, unexpected events and grace unfold each day ... which many of you have witnessed,” Jon said. “By making the effort of praying at the clinic we serve as a sign and means of hope and help for desperate parents.”

White Plains, New York
In White Plains, the volunteers for the city’s sixth 40 Days for Life kicked off their campaign with a Valentine’s Day rally.

Father Ralph Berg, the pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, who hosted the event, prayed for gentleness yet perseverance in seeking to change hearts and minds to treasure “these most innocent and lovable of children” among us.

Gerald, the local leader in White Plains, also noted that Maria Teresa Rueda recounted a story – in Spanish – of how the mere presence and simple greeting of one individual praying in front of an abortion center caused a woman to choose life for her child at the very last moment.
