by Bill Donohue, President, Catholic League: In May, a female customer, and her daughter, complained to Macy's security at the Flushing, New York store that a man, dressed as a woman, was in the women's restroom. After being asked to use the men's room, he complained to store officials.

Javier Chavez, the senior store detective, thought he was doing his job. But he was upbraided for not following Macy's policy: unbeknownst to him, Macy's allows cross-dressing men to use the women's bathroom. He expressed his misgivings, citing his Catholic beliefs, but agreed to enforce the policy anyway.

Subsequently, he was fired. He then acquired a lawyer, seeking legal redress.

Chavez claims he was fired not for his deeds, but for his beliefs. Macy's objected to his thoughts. This is un-American. It is also unprecedented: employees being fired for their thoughts is unheard of.

Who's next? If Macy's can violate the conscience rights of Chavez, who will it seize on next, and for what reason?

This is a basic human rights issue. Please let Macy's know that thought control will not be tolerated in the U.S.A.
