These Republican Senators Will Oppose the Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME-Pro-Abortion)
Now that the House of Representatives has passed a bill that would defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business, all attention turns to the Senate.

Leading Senators have already indicated they intend to rewrite the bill, which also includes language to partially repeal Obamacare. There is concern from some pro-life circles that the Planned Parenthood defunding language may be removed from the bill and leading pro-life groups have made it clear to top Senate Republicans that the defunding language is non-negotiable.

But there are a couple of pro-abortion Republicans who appear unlikely to support the Planned Parenthood defunding bill. Senate Republican leaders can only afford to lose to Republican votes before the legislation doesn’t have enough to pass the 50 vote threshold.

Previously, pro-life Vice President Mike Pence broke the tie on legislation to allow states to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. If Republicans can muster 50 votes on this legislation to defund the abortion company with federal dollars Pence could break the tie once again.

But making that task difficult are Senator Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Both are Liberal pro-abortion Republicans who have previously been a thorn in the side of pro-life Advocates on the defunding issue. Republicans could lose their votes but would be in a position where they could lose no other votes before being unable to pass the bill.

Complicating the situation, Senator Dean Heller of Nevada recently said at a town hall meeting that he supports funding Planned Parenthood even though he has voted to defund the abortion company. . . .

Now is the time for pro-life Advocates to contact members of the Senate to make it clear they want Planned Parenthood defunded and that the component in the reconciliation bill is non-negotiable. The pro-abortion sign is particularly targeting Senators like Cory Gardner of Colorado and Jeff Flake of Arizona. . . . Read More
