Our Founders Truly Valued Life

Carol Tobias
Carol Tobias, President, National Right to Life: You probably know that on July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress cast the most momentous vote in American history, passing the resolution that formally united the colonies and created the new nation – the United States of America.

Wait. July 2nd?

That’s right, the vote to break from Britain and create the United States occurred on July 2nd in Philadelphia, not July 4th. Future President John Adams predicted that this day of independence, July 2nd, would forever be celebrated with festivals, parades, and fireworks.

But Americans chose instead to celebrate the noble and beautiful public proclamation to the world of our freedom and rights, the Declaration of Independence, which was approved by Congress two days later, on the 4th.

Pro-lifers have always had a special affection for this document.

From its recognition of Life as the first right (in Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness), to its respect for the religiously oriented concept of Natural Law, the Founders set a tone in the Declaration that would make us a pro-life people.

The Declaration stated something very bold for its time – that “all men are created equal.” The power of this idea would eventually free enslaved people, give women equal rights, and lead millions of Americans to join the movement to protect the unborn.

The Declaration states that governments are instituted among men to secure these rights. In other words, we, through our elected officials, can bring the dream of the Declaration to full fruition . . . if we do our part as citizens.

There are many ways we can do that. We can speak out for the unborn. We can vote. We can encourage and persuade our elected officials to help our nation realize the dream of the Declaration by passing policies that protect the lives of innocent unborn children. . . .

July 4th is one of the most significant days in the history of the world. Please help make it a critical day in the life an unborn child as well!
