Baby Girl Born During Hurricane Harvey: ‘She Belongs To God’

by Dorothy Cummings McLean: The birth of a long-awaited baby began just as her parents became trapped by flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Annie and Greg Smith, both doctors, had recently moved to Houston from Virginia for advanced medical training. Annie, 32, had suffered two miscarriages before becoming pregnant a third time, and the couple had carefully planned the birth. It was scheduled for Sunday.

However, at about 8 a.m. Sunday, as the Smiths looked out of the window at the water now encircling their apartment building, Annie realized she was already in labor.

Between fruitless calls to 911 and the Texas National Guard, Greg, although a specialist in pediatric anaesthesiology, prepared to do a home birth. He collected household supplies such as scissors and needles and asked his visiting mom, Sue Chor, to sterilize them with boiling water.

A neighbor dropped by to check on the couple and summoned more medical help via the building’s social media network. Fifteen more medical trainees grabbed whatever instruments they had on hand and crowded into the Smiths’ apartment.

In the end, Annie got in touch with the director of her medical program, and the director’s dad, who lived near a fire station, walked over to ask the firefighters for help.

Greg told ABC News, “I was with Annie and I looked out the window and I saw this big truck come pulling up and I said, ‘Holy cow — I think someone is here for us.’”

The rushing water outside was chest-height, and so the neighbors formed a human chain to get Annie and Greg safely onto the flatbed truck.

“I just kind of held on to them one person at a time and crawled along their arms until the firemen helped me up the ladder onto the truck,” Annie told ABC News. “I was sitting on a fire hose in the back of the truck with a shower curtain over my head and looking at all the floodwater around us thinking ‘This is so bizarre.’”

The couple arrived at Texas Children’s Hospital 15 minutes later. Hospital staff, marooned by the flood at the hospital since Friday, were working alternate 12-hour shifts.

Baby Adrielle was born 12 hours later, at 1:59 a.m. on Monday morning. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and both mom and baby are doing well. Family members have nicknamed the girl “the Hurricane” and “Baby Harvey.”

“We’ve always wanted a little baby,” Greg told People magazine. When Annie didn’t get pregnant soon after her second miscarriage, the couple applied to ultimate authority.

“We felt like we had to surrender this to God,” Greg said. “Everything about this pregnancy is God’s will. That’s why her name is Adrielle. It means she belongs to God.”

Midwife Rides Inflatable Swan Through Hurricane Harvey Flooding to Help Deliver Baby

Cathy Rude, Midwife
It’s amazing the length that some people will go to help a mother and her unborn child.

Several days ago, midwife Cathy Rude braved the floodwaters in Katy, Texas and rode an inflatable swan to help a mother in labor with her unborn child, Today reports.

Rude, 63, has been a midwife for 24 years, but this probably was her most unusual delivery yet. Several feet of floodwater made it nearly impossible for Rude to make it to her patient Andrea Haley, who was showing early signs of labor.

“I was concerned, as she was, that if her water were to break, things would happen very quickly,” Rude told Today. “So, we started asking how I was going to get out of the house if that happened.”

The midwife said she also was concerned about getting her birthing supplies wet in the floodwaters, which came up to her waist outside her front door.

Here’s more from the report:

As Haley’s labor progressed, she drove with her mother and her husband, Daniel, to attempt to pick Rude up in their truck. When they arrived in Rude’s neighborhood, however, they learned that it would be impossible to get down the street due to the floodwaters. After being unable to get in touch with friends who owned a kayak, Haley spotted a woman on a large, white [inflatable] swan drifting down the flooded street.

“Andrea yelled out the window of the truck and said, ‘Hey, would you be willing to give my midwife a ride so she can deliver my baby?’” said Rude.

The swan’s owner was a neighbor of Rude’s, who quickly obliged, taking off down the street with her swan to collect Rude and her birthing supplies and deliver them back to the waiting pick-up truck.
Rude said she laughed when she saw the inflatable swan at her door, but she hopped on board and made it to the birthing center where she helped Haley deliver her baby boy, Bennett. . . . Read More

40 Years Ago I Survived an Abortion, Thank God I’m Alive Today

by Melissa Ohden: If you’ve ever wondered what goes through an abortion survivor’s head on their birthday, I’ll give you a sneak peek into mine on my 40th birthday.

12:33 am: I’m woken up by our 3-year-old. I glance at the clock, realizing it’s now the 29th. I say a prayer, thanking God for being alive and continue this prayer multiple times throughout the day.

6:30 am: I think about how I was delivered around this time in the final step of the abortion procedure. I’m saddened and horrified thinking about it, while at the same time, so thankful to have been born alive.

These thoughts automatically trigger my questions about who all was present at the time or shortly thereafter and the effect all of this might have had on them. My grandmother was there. Nurses were there. I worry about them. Yes, even my grandmother. Did this haunt them throughout their lives? When did the abortionist first find out the abortion had “failed”? When did he begin to panic? Was I his first botched abortion survivor?

I reflect on the panic that so many must have felt. This wasn’t supposed to happen. And then to be told I needed to be left to die. To hear me, to see me, this suffering newborn gasping for breath. My heart breaks for them. I wonder, do they realize today is the 40th anniversary of that fateful day?

9:00 am: I wonder how long I had been in the NICU forty years ago today at this time. I wonder if my grandmother kept checking on me. I wonder if she was allowed anywhere near me? I wonder what that was like for her to have me there at the hospital she worked at, trained nurses at, for the next twenty one days. Was she ever thankful I was actually born alive, or was she simply angry that the abortion failed, and I was there like a black eye for all to see–the child born to her daughter out of wedlock?

1:00 pm: I can’t remember what time my medical records state that the neonatologist visited me, but I think of him today. “Approximately 31 weeks gestation,” he wrote in my records. I’m sure he assessed and directed care for many premature infants. I wonder what he thought of my circumstances?

3:00: The words “it is finished” keep rolling around in my head. Of course, it reminds me of Jesus on Good Friday, as He hung from the Cross, but the words have been echoing in my head all day. After four days of the abortion procedure, today was meant to be the day that it was finished. Except, much like Good Friday, God was not done. What looks like the end, could very well be just the beginning. Thank God, truly!

5:00 pm: I think about the nurses again. I wonder if that nurse who whisked me off to the NICU because she couldn’t just leave me there to die is still alive today? If she remembers this day? If she does, I sure hope she knows how thankful I am for her.

And the NICU nurses…I think about them again, too. I wonder who’s been tending to me throughout the day. Have they been praying over me already? I bet they have, based on the conversation I was blessed to have with one of them earlier this year.

I wonder what the buzz is around the hospital, knowing it was so associated with my grandmother. Did people know 40 years ago around this time about what happened? I know how quickly news and gossip travel, and this one would have hit like a lightning bolt. What was this like for my grandmother? Did it anger her more that the abortion had failed and created all of this? Did it make her even angrier at my birthmother? What was it like for her continue to be there at the hospital in the days and weeks even after I was gone? That place had to have been forever changed for her.
8:30: As I’m rocking our overly tired three year old to sleep (so thankful that she asked me to do this), I think about my grandmother once again. If her plans had succeeded, I wouldn’t be doing this right now. I wouldn’t have become a mother. I wouldn’t have lived. My daughters wouldn’t have lived. And I choke back the tears that threaten to fall and wake Ava.

I wonder if she ever would have accepted me. I wonder if she ever could have loved me, despite how she worked so hard that I not live. I feel sorry for her that she never got to meet her great-granddaughters and see the impact of the decisions she made about my life and therefore, theirs. Maybe it would have affected her in a positive way? Maybe she could have recognized the damage she caused?

As I rock Ava, I think about how 40 years ago at this time, I was motherless. And I hate thinking about this. Taken from my birthmother, without her knowing I was alive, and not yet having my adoptive mom’s arms to hold me, I was alone. I know the nurses provided me great care and love, but I was motherless. And my heart aches for my newborn self.

And for my birthmother. I wonder if she was still in the hospital, with me being just down the hallway, unbeknownst to her?

9:00: I’ll be honest. I’ve really done nothing today for myself. It’s been a busy day. My own goal was to sit down and drink a cup of coffee while reading a magazine. I contemplate sitting down to at least read the magazine, but decide instead to tuck our nine-year-old, (who doesn’t want or need tucked in that often these days), into bed.

I even brush her hair as I help her settle in. I reflect on how this simple thing, brushing her hair, is a gift. She may not allow me to do this much longer, and just being with her, caring for her, is a gift.

And as I settle her in, the final thoughts of the day settle in. It is finished. There’s those words again. The horrors of that day still haunt me and my birthmother, as well as many extended family members and likely the medical professionals who cared for me, maybe even the abortionist, but the evils of that day are finished.

I’m alive. I’ve been united with my birthmom and many members of both sides of my biological family, despite all of the efforts to keep us apart. The secrets of what was done to me, of what was done to my birthmother, are secrets no more.

That cycle of secrecy, lies and suffering has ended. The fear that has silenced so many, including me over the years, has been overcome.

And I return again to my prayers of Thanksgiving.

Kudos to Evangelicals

Bill Donohue: The Catholic League has a long history of mutual cooperation with evangelical Christians on a host of cultural issues. In that spirit, we condemn the unfair attacks against the statement on marriage, family and sexuality that was signed by more than 150 evangelical leaders following their conference in Nashville last week.

“Hateful,” “homophobic,” “anti-LGBT” are among the hysterical condemnations of the statement flying around print, broadcast and social media. But the statement is none of those things.

While restating long-held Christian teaching that marriage is ordained by God as the “lifelong union of one man and one woman,” and that differences between male and female are “divinely ordained” and unchangeable, the statement does not single out homosexual or transgender persons. It emphasizes that all human beings are called to “chastity outside of marriage and fidelity within marriage,” reiterating the immorality of heterosexual intercourse “before or outside marriage” as well.

Nor can the statement accurately be termed “hateful.” Quite the contrary. It affirms God’s “merciful” love and forgiveness. It rejects the idea that “divinely ordained differences between male and female” somehow “render them unequal in dignity or worth.” It refutes the notion that same-sex attraction “puts a person outside the hope of the gospel.” And it calls on Christians to “speak the truth in love at all times” and to never “speak in such ways that dishonor God’s design.”

In short, the statement is a loving, faith-filled affirmation of timeless Christian teachings on marriage, family and human sexuality. In these tumultuous times, we continue to stand with our evangelical brothers and sisters in defending these traditional moral values.

One Simple Trick To Make Abortion Rare… Tell Women The Truth!

by BĂ©atrice Fedor, National Right to Life: A tip for those who want to make abortion rare: Tell women the truth. Tell them the truth about human development, tell them the truth about the violence of abortion procedures; tell them the truth about potential risks for their reproductive health; tell them the truth about long term psychological consequences. If you tell the truth about abortion, I guarantee that less and less women will think it’s an acceptable way to deal with the child to be born.

Planned Parenthood is Trying to Infiltrate Your Child’s School

Planned Parenthood has lost its battle to weasel into Pennsylvania’s Reading High School. On Wednesday, August 23, Planned Parenthood-Keystone and an affiliate, Access Matters, lost a school board vote to set up a ‘counseling office’ inside Reading High School.

The behemoth business is responsible for over half of the abortions committed in the state of Pennsylvania, and they were attempting to gain access to young teenagers by setting up a state-funded facility inside of the public school. The Reading School Board was inundated with calls, emails, and in-person testimony from citizens who recognized the danger of inviting Planned Parenthood into the lives of children before ultimately voting “No” on the measure.

Make no mistake: It’s not altruism that compels Planned Parenthood to gain access to children. In fact, altruism toward children is patently impossible for a business that profits from the destruction of children. At Planned Parenthood, every decision considers one factor and that is Planned Parenthood’s bottom line. High schoolers represent potential clientele.

In schools, Planned Parenthood receives tax dollars to preach a gospel of unrestricted sexual experimentation, opening teens up to STDs, pregnancy, and emotional distress. Incidentally, this is a trifecta of issues that send teens to Planned Parenthood facilities for STD screenings, abortions, and more bad sex ed and counseling.

Those in-clinic “services” aren’t free, either. In Reading, abortion costs start at $450 and go up. To recap this dollar trail: Planned Parenthood gets paid to promote a devastating sexual agenda to teens, which includes referring teens to Planned Parenthood, and then gets paid again when teens face the consequences of the risk-taking behaviors Planned Parenthood encouraged and walk through their facility’s doors seeking solutions to the problem Planned Parenthood created. . . .

We don’t need Planned Parenthood. . . . Read More

Planned Parenthood Protests Ceremony Honoring Iowa’s First Female Governor

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R)
Planned Parenthood is supposed to be pro-woman. After all it’s all about women’s health and reproductive health and women’s rights. Right?

Apparently not.

Planned Parenthood activists protested the ceremony honoring Iowa’s first female governor Kim Reynolds just because she’s pro-life.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) and Sen. Joni Ernst (R) will be inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame — and Planned Parenthood activists plan to be there to protest.

According to the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, four women are inducted each year into the state’s Women’s Hall of Fame, “paying tribute to them and setting them forth as role models for others.”

Reynolds, formerly the state’s lieutenant governor, became the first female governor of Iowa earlier this year when her predecessor, former Gov. Terry Branstad (R), was appointed as the United States Ambassador to China.

Ernst was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014. She is Iowa’s first female U.S. senator — and the first female combat veteran to serve in the Senate.

The two women will be inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame in a Saturday ceremony. The late Jane Boyd, an Iowa civil rights leader, and Des Moines Councilwoman Christine Hensley will also be inducted.

A coalition of left-leaning organizations — including Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa — are planning to protest the inclusion of Reynolds and Ernst in the event. In a Facebook post, organizers of the protest described Reynolds and Ernst as “the enemies of Iowa women.” . . . Planned Parenthood is apparently sore that Reynolds supports defunding the abortion business. She doesn’t want Iowa linked to a company that aborts baby girls. Because she hates women. Or something. . . . Read More

Catholic School Removes Statues of Jesus and Mary to Become More Inclusive

Mary & Jesus removed from Catholiuc School
Removal of a number of statues and other smaller Catholic icons from the campus of San Domenico School in San Anselmo has raised concerns among some parents.

In an email to the school’s board of directors, Dominican Sisters of San Rafael and the head of school, Shannon Fitzpatrick objected to the removal of the statues and other steps the school has taken in an effort to make the school more inclusive.

“Articulating an inclusive foundation appears to mean letting go of San Domenico’s 167-year tradition as a Dominican Catholic school and being both afraid and ashamed to celebrate one’s heritage and beliefs,” wrote Fitzpatrick, whose 8-year-old son attends the school.

She added, “In our time here, the word ‘Catholic’ has been removed from the mission statement, sacraments were removed from the curriculum, the lower school curriculum was changed to world religions, the logo and colors were changed to be ‘less Catholic,’ and the uniform was changed to be less Catholic.”

Responding to follow-up questions Monday, Fitzpatrick wrote, “There are other families having the same concerns I do. Many parents feel if the school is heading in a different direction then the San Domenico community should have been notified before the signing of the enrollment for the following year.”

Cheryl Newell, who had four children graduate from San Domenico, said, “I am extremely disappointed in the school and the direction they’ve been going. This isn’t a new thing that they’ve been intentionally eroding their Catholic heritage. They’re trying to be something for everyone and they’re making no one happy,” . . .

Kim Pipki, whose daughter left San Domenico two years ago after graduating from ninth grade, said some of the statues were also important to families who aren’t Catholic.

The one main statue that has everyone fired up is the baby Jesus and Mary one,” Pipki said. “It was at the center of the primary school courtyard.” . . .

Amy Skewes-Cox, who heads San Domenico School’s board of trustees, said the relocation and removal of some of the school’s 180 religious icons was “completely in compliance” with San Domenico’s new strategic plan, approved unanimously by the board of trustees and the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael last year. She said at least 18 icons remain, including a statue of St. Dominic at the center of the campus. . . .

Rather than indoctrinate students in Catholic theology, San Domenico provides students with instruction in world religions and philosophy.

“It’s really about empowering each student and giving them the information so they can discover their own purpose, their own truth,” Stock said. “We believe the best way to understand your own faith is to learn about the faiths of others.”

Mirza Khan, the school’s director of philosophy, ethics and world religions, said, “The Dominican teaching philosophy is not to teach there is only one truth. It is to foster conversation, to intentionally invite in participants that have different perspectives in a very open-ended process of philosophical and spiritual inquiry. That has been a long-standing part of the Dominican tradition.” . . .  Read More

Arkansas Will Appeal Judge’s Enjoining Four Protective Abortion Laws

Arkansas AG Leslie Rutledge
. . . On August 16, a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a preliminary injunction issued by activist federal Judge Kristine Baker “preventing the state from suspending any Medicaid payments for services rendered to patients from Planned Parenthood,” . . .

Judge Baker “initially ordered the state to continue the payments to three patients who had sued over the move and later expanded that order to anyone who seeks or wants to obtain services from the organization’s health centers in Arkansas.”

But in a 2-1 decision the federal appeals court panel ruled the unnamed women did not have a right to challenge the decision defunding Planned Parenthood.

“The Court found that Planned Parenthood and the three patients it recruited could not contest in federal court Arkansas’s determination that a medical provider has engaged in misconduct that merits disqualification from the Medicaid program,” said Attorney General Leslie Rutledge. “All patients should have access to ethical, quality and responsible health care, and should never be beholden to a company that is only seeking to protect its profits.”

In 2015 Gov. Hutchinson directed the state Department of Human Services to stop disbursing Medicaid funds to pay for the organization’s services. (Planned Parenthood of the Heartland operates clinics in Little Rock and one in Fayetteville.) . . .

Earlier today AG Rutledge appealed another decision by Judge Baker. As reported previously by NRL News Today, Judge Baker blocked Arkansas from enforcing four new protective laws, including a ban on the hideous practice of dismemberment abortions. All were enacted earlier this year and three were to go into effect August 1. . . .

Seven states– Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas–currently forbid an abortion “technique” that uses sharp metal clamps and scissors to crush, tear and pulverize living unborn human beings, to rip heads and legs off of tiny torsos until the defenseless child bleeds to death.

In her 140-page decision Judge Baker defended issuing a preliminary injunction on the grounds that “The threatened harm to [abortionist] Dr. [Frederick] Hopkins and the fraction of women for whom the mandate is relevant clearly outweighs whatever damage or harm a proposed injunction may cause the State of Arkansas.”

However Rose Mimms, executive director for Arkansas Right to Life, told NRL News Today" As usual the challenges by the ACLU focus on misinformation as to what these new laws actually do– and that is to tell the truth that living unborn children are brutally torn apart until they bleed to death, that unborn baby girls are aborted simply because they are baby girls, and that the bodies of unborn children killed by abortion would be respected and treated as any other human being is at death.

Ingrid Duran, director of state legislation for National Right to Life, added: Judge Baker never considered the societal degradation that accompanies “normalizing” this horrific abortion procedure. NRLC believes that this is a temporary setback and we appreciate the hardworking effort from the Attorney General’s office to appeal and defend this constitutional law. . . . Read More

South Carolina Governor Issues Order to Defund Planned Parenthood Abortion Business

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster
The governor of South Carolina today issued an executive order that blocks state agencies from using taxpayer dollars to fund the abortion industry. The order prevents the use of either state or local taxpayer funds to go to any doctor or Health Clinic that is an affiliate of an abortion business.

The order from Governor Henry McMaster makes it clear that the state will not do business with the abortion industry and specifically the Planned Parenthood abortion company. Here’s more:
The executive order directs state agencies to cease providing state or local funds – through grants, contracts, state-administered federal funds or any other form – to any physician or medical practices affiliated with an abortion clinic that is operating with or in the same physical location as one, according to the release.

“There are a variety of agencies, clinics, and medical entities in South Carolina that receive taxpayer funding to offer important women’s health and family planning services without performing abortions,” said McMaster in the release. “Taxpayer dollars must not directly or indirectly subsidize abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.”
This is good news because three clinics run by the Planned Parenthood abortion company are reimbursed by Medicaid for some abortions. . . . Read More

Under UN Pressure, Chile Abandons Pro-Life Cause

by Marianna Orlandi, Ph.D., C-FAM: Chile’s highest court approved a law that decriminalized abortion in cases of rape, fatal disability, and when a mother’s life is at risk. The law was adopted earlier this summer by Chile’s Congress and long-promised by President Michelle Bachelet.

By six votes in favor and four against, the Constitutional Court dismissed the pro-life challenge to the law by Chile Vamos, a coalition of lawmakers supported by a large number of national and international organizations and the Chilean Conference of Bishops.

The judgment removes Chile from an exclusive group of states that comprehensively protect children before birth that includes the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Malta, Nicaragua, and the Vatican. At least sixty others maintain highly restrictive abortion laws, notwithstanding pressure from the UN system to progressively allow abortion on-demand.

“We have a long fight ahead to stave off abortion on-demand and win back hearts and minds to protect the unborn person,” Professor Tomas Henriquez told the Friday Fax. The Executive Director of the human rights institute Comunidad y Justicia said this is only the beginning.

“We all know what the end game is, and pro-choice NGOs were quick to remind us that this bill is what they call the ‘minimum,’” he explained.

Bachelet described the decision as a victory of “tolerance.” The Court struck down by a vote of 8-2 the part of her law that restricted the right of health providers and workers to not perform abortions by claiming conscientious objection.

“The bill would have provided (a right to conscientious objection) only for doctors, but not for technicians or institutions,” Henriquez explained.

“This is the first case of conscientious objections in the Constitutional Court. We expect the Court to construct a new shield for conscience,” he said. But he said it remains unclear whether health providers, including Catholic hospitals, will be able to refuse to perform abortions. The judgment and dissenting opinions will be published next week.

This legislation will be viewed by many as Bachelet’s legacy project.

A press release from International Planned Parenthood Federation’s acknowledged, “this historic victory didn’t happen overnight,” but “took decades of grit, determination, and persistence.”

In 2006, during her first tenure as president, Bachelet forced the introduction of the morning-after pill in the country. Ironically, it was the same Constitutional Court who initially stopped her, invoking the provision of the constitution protecting human life.

After her re-election in 2014, and following her stint at the helm of UN-Women, she promised to decriminalize abortion.

International Planned Parenthood Federation’s CEO, Giselle Carino, called Bachelet “a champion of women’s rights,” and said this is “a historic milestone for women’s rights in Chile and around the world.”

Amnesty International similarly described the pro-abortion decision in terms of, “an important win for human rights.” Not all, however, agree with the abortion advocates’ claims.

The San Jose Articles, prepared by international law and health experts, state that human rights treaties enshrine a presumption in favor of protecting the unborn and nowhere contemplate a right to abortion in any circumstance.

The Chilean Bishops called the decision “incomprehensible,” stressing “abortion is not the solution to painful or difficult situations.” “We will double our efforts,” they said, to accompany all women facing difficult pregnancies.

NFL Player Ben Watson Slams Margaret Sanger as the “Ultimate” Racist . . .

. . . “She Wanted to Exterminate Blacks”
NFL star Ben Watson is one of those rare celebrities who speaks out for the lives of unborn babies.

The Baltimore Ravens tight end recently told Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center in San Diego that he believes abortion is “the ultimate form of racism.”

“I do know that blacks kind of represent a large portion of the abortions, and I do know that honestly the whole idea with Planned Parenthood and [founder Margaret] Sanger in the past was to exterminate blacks,” said Watson, an African American. “And it’s kind of ironic that it’s working.”

As Watson said, abortions are disproportionately high in the black community. According to census data, African Americans make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population but have about 30 percent of the abortions. African-American teenage abortion rates are more than twice as high as the national average. The African American abortion rate is 41 per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19, according to a study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute. The national average abortion rate is 18 per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19.

Research indicates that the abortion industry targets minorities, too. One study found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood surgical abortion facilities are within walking distance of African American and Hispanic neighborhoods.

Watson, a Christian husband and father of five, said he believes every human life is intrinsically valuable. . . . Read More

Here’s a Bible Passage That Clearly Condemns Abortion

by Paul Stark: Why should we care about the fate of unborn children who are at risk of death through abortion? Why do they matter?

Many people don’t care. After all, unborn children are small and largely hidden from view. They look (at their earliest stages) different from us. They don’t have the sophisticated cognitive functions that we do. They can’t speak for themselves.

Worse, many people feel like (or think they could feel like) they have a self-interest in the destruction of unborn children. Abortion, people think, makes life easier. That’s why it happens.

This isn’t a problem unique to the unborn. Human societies often have trouble giving consideration to individuals or groups who seem very different from us, or whom we have a practical self-interest in exploiting or killing. And that moral blindness has led to great injustice.

The Golden Rule, I think, can help us see clearly. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s a piece of moral wisdom expressed in numerous ethical and religious traditions stretching back to antiquity. “What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others,” said Confucius. “Love your neighbor as yourself,” Jesus taught.

The Golden Rule reorients our moral thinking by putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes. It directs our concern to others who matter just as much as we do. It tests the consistency of our actions to ensure we do not mistreat other people.

Crucially, application of the Golden Rule requires that we imagine ourselves in the place of someone else. In the case of unborn children, however, we only need a basic understanding of human biological development. That’s because each of us was once, in fact, an unborn child.

“The truth … that you are the same individual living being as the fetus from which you developed is a matter of observation and scientific data,” writes philosopher Christopher Kaczor. “You now, you at ten years old, you at ten days following birth, you ten days after conception and you at all stages of your life in between stand in bodily continuity.”

I was once an adolescent, and before that I was a child, and before that an infant, and a fetus, and an embryo. To have killed the embryo I once was, therefore, would have been to kill me.

Here’s how the Golden Rule applies to abortion:
  • Would I want to be killed by abortion? No. So I should not kill others by abortion.
  • Are social and economic difficulties a good justification for killing me? No. So they are not a good justification for killing unborn children either.
  • Would I want other people to value and defend my unborn life? Yes. So I should value and defend the lives of others who have not yet been born.
Some people think that we didn’t really count when we were unborn children. We didn’t yet have the abilities or characteristics that make us valuable and confer on us a right to life.

But this is a false and dangerous understanding of human value. My value is not contingent on how old I am, or how smart I am, or how independent I am, or what I look like. I don’t matter less when I become disabled and dependent on caregivers. I’m not worth more when I learn calculus. I don’t lose my right to live when I experience dementia and lack self-awareness and rationality.

I have my fundamental worth, rather, simply because I am what I am. That’s why I have that value at all times of my life. I had value as an unborn child because that unborn child was me.

The beauty of the Golden Rule is that it takes our own self-interest and extends it to everybody else. Just as I don’t want to be valued for my size or appearance, I should not value others for those characteristics. Just as I don’t want to be intentionally killed, so I should not intentionally kill anyone else. Just as I deserve the protection of society, so I should work to protect others.

Why, then, should we care about unborn children? Because we care about ourselves. Why do unborn children matter? They matter because we matter.

Outcry From Parents Forces School to Scrap Sex-Ed Plans and Keep Abstinence Program

Planned Parenthood’s basic operating plan is very straightforward.

1. It installs sex education programs in schools.

2. These sex ed programs then create a demand for birth control among teens.

3. The birth control fails, which then leads to abortions.
Planned Parenthood makes money at each step in this process.

Planned Parenthood and its cohorts have developed a document called the National Sexuality Education Standards. These “standards” are not part of Common Core or any other national program. Rather, they are a horrible set of ideas intended to teach youth about sex, and are being pushed throughout the country. It is not surprising that responsible parents throughout the United States are fighting to keep these sex ed programs out of schools.

One such battle is currently raging in Reno, Nevada, where a document put together by Advocates for Youth (an organization originally called the Center for Population Options) was used to create a new sex program called SHARE. The proposed SHARE program is intended to replace an abstinence-only program in the schools and has met heavy resistance. The Washoe County School District formed a committee to recommend a new program and SHARE was its recommendation.

According to reports in the Reno Gazette-Journal, the committee’s proposed curriculum, which covered a wide array of topics ranging from respect to safe sex practices, was criticized for straying from the currently taught abstinence-only curriculum and interjecting “progressive ideals” surrounding a person’s sexuality, among other things. Major sticking points centered around topics that some community members felt were broached too early in a child’s life or should be left to a parent’s discretion. For instance, drafts of the proposed curriculum referenced vaginal, anal, and oral sex as early as the 6th grade.

The outcry from parents and other members of the community was so strong that the school district had no choice but to cancel plans to implement the SHARE program. The current abstinence-only program will continue being presented for the 2017–2018 school year. . . . Read More

Princeton Univ Office of Religious Life Raises Funds for Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz

A sign of just how pro-abortion Ivy League universities have become, even Princeton University’s Office of Religious Life supports the abortion chain Planned Parenthood.

A few weeks ago, the office cosponsored the Run4AllWomen New Jersey to benefit the abortion chain, according to Campus Reform. Dr. Khristina Gonzalez, associate dean of the college, organized the event, and several faculty members from the office dedicated to promoting religion on campus participated, according to the report.

What promoting the killing of unborn babies has to do with religion is perplexing. The Princeton Office of Religious Life told Campus Reform that it “does not take a stance on the issue of abortion.” However, its reason for participating in the pro-abortion event was because “the total health care of all people is of concern to us, and Planned Parenthood provides a wide range of critical services to women and men” – which sounds a lot like a stance.

On the office Facebook page, Associate Dean of Religious Life Theresa S. Thames and Program Assistant Maya Wahrman posted a smiling photo of themselves and a message that they “fully enjoyed cosponsoring” the pro-abortion rally and fundraiser on Aug. 11.

The move angered a number of religious and pro-life students on campus. While not all pro-life advocates are religious, many base their position on the Judaeo-Christian principle that all human lives are valuable and deserving of protection.

Princeton Pro-Life told the campus news outlet that the campus office endorses freedom of religion, but by supporting Planned Parenthood, it is supporting a group that destroys religious freedom, the right to life and other basic human rights for millions of unborn babies. . . . Read More

Claire McCaskill’s Ironic Question: “Why Defund the Entity Preventing Abortions?”

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill either does not know or does not want the voting public to know what the abortion chain Planned Parenthood actually does.

The pro-abortion Democrat from Missouri tried to explain her support for the No. 1 abortion business in the United States on Saturday by claiming Planned Parenthood does more to prevent abortions than any other group.

The Dunklin Democrat reports McCaskill described her support for the abortion chain during a town hall meeting Saturday in Kennett.

According to the report:

McCaskill shared her views on Planned Parenthood after an audience member questioned the practices on the organization.

“Teenage pregnancy is at an all time low in this country,” shared McCaskill. “Abortion is at the lowest rate that it’s been since Roe v. Wade was decided. It’s because we’ve made access to birth control so readily available.”

“It’s the most utilized source for birth control for millions of women,” stated McCaskill. “So why would we shut down the funding to the very entity that’s helping us prevent abortions? It makes no sense to me.”

The statement is almost laughable, except for the fact that McCaskill actually believes it or at least wants her constituents to. The abortion giant Planned Parenthood makes millions performing more than 300,000 abortions on unborn babies every year. It throws pizza parties and gives awards to abortion clinics that exceed their abortion quotas. And it promotes risky sexual behavior to teens in public schools across the country. . . . Read More

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Calls Unlimited Abortions Up to Birth a Human Right

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Ireland should treat abortion as a “human rights” issue.

At a three-day meeting in Canada between Mr Trudeau and Leo Varadkar, the Irish taoiseach, the two leaders spoke about Mr Varadkar’s plan to hold a referendum next year to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Irish constitution, which protects the right to life of the unborn child.

“We discussed the issue of abortion, which I know is an important issue for a lot of campaigners for women’s rights in Canada,” Mr Varadkar said. “I updated the prime minister on our plans to have a referendum next year to give the people of Ireland the opportunity to remove our constitutional ban on abortion, should they wish to do so.”

“Fundamental rights” - Asked whether he had any advice for Mr Varadkar, Mr Trudeau said so-called “reproductive rights” were fundamental human rights.

“On the issue of reproductive rights, I shared our perspective that reproductive rights for women are integral to women’s rights in general and women’s rights are human rights and I encouraged him to look at it as a question of fundamental rights for women and we had a good discussion on that,” he said.

Example to follow? Canada has one of the most permissive abortion regimes in the world with abortion allowed up to birth and for any reason. Mr Trudeau has also made clear that all MPs in his Liberal Party are required to vote with the “pro-choice” side on any bills, regardless of their personal beliefs. In Britain abortion has traditionally been seen as a conscience issue. . . . Read More

Apple Will Donate $1 Million to Pro-Abortion Group

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook has announced that the tech company will make a $1 million donation to a pro-abortion organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center. However the organization not only supports abortion but was linked to a liberal activist who shot up the office of the pro-life group Family Research Council.

The donations were made supposedly to counter white supremacy. . . .

But, in a chilling Federal Bureau of Investigation interrogation video, Floyd Lee Corkins, who shot up the offices of the Family Research Council on August 15, 2012, says that he picked his target from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) website. Corkins entered the lobby armed with a loaded semi-automatic pistol, 100 rounds of ammunition, and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches. He started firing at FRC’s building manager Leo Johnson who heroically tackled the shooter after a gunshot shattered his arm. . . .

FRC president Tony Perkins said Corkins act of terrorism has put sunlight on SPLC, which has targeted a wide swath of Americans for standing up for traditional values, most often Christian and conservative.

“The SPLC’s reckless labeling has led to devastating consequences,” said FRC President Tony Perkins. “Because of its ‘hate group’ labeling, a deadly terrorist had a guidemap to FRC and other organizations. Our team is still dealing with the fallout of the attack, that was intended to have a chilling effect on organizations that are simply fighting for their values.”

“The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has now been linked to domestic terrorism in federal court, should put an immediate stop to its practice of labeling organizations that oppose their [agenda],” continued Perkins.

“In a civil society, shutting down debate is not how reasonable people and organizations operate. Intimidating and bullying others shreds the ‘ordered liberty’ of which our Founders wrote and for which they advocated, and places all of us in jeopardy of losing our sacred rights as militant extremists claim the public square exclusively for themselves,” concluded Perkins. . . . Planned Parenthood Abortion Business May Open Clinic at Local High School

Parents and pro-life advocates urged a Pennsylvania school board Wednesday to reject a proposal to put a Planned Parenthood-run facility inside Reading High School.

The Reading Eagle reports the facility would not do abortions at the high school, but Planned Parenthood staffers would offer students sex education, counseling about reproductive health and referrals to their abortion facility in Reading.

Pro-lifers with Students for Life, the Pennsylvania Family Institute and others have been joining local parents to protest the proposal in the past few months. On June 21, about 80 pro-life advocates stood outside the Reading School District to urge the school board to oppose the Planned Parenthood-run center.

The center was proposed by the sex education advocacy group AccessMatters in May 2017 and would be facilitated by Planned Parenthood Keystone. The center would be located inside the high school and would give the abortion chain direct access to young, vulnerable students.

In addition, the center would be paid for by tax dollars, according to the Pennsylvania Family Institute. . . .  Read More

Missouri Democrat Senator Says She Hopes President Trump is Assassinated

Missouri State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D) says there’s “no way in hell” she will be resigning from her post, despite pleas from prominent state Democrats and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO). In a now-deleted Facebook comment, Chappelle-Nadal said that she hoped President Donald Trump would be assassinated. . . . The comment reads “I hope Trump is assassinated!” and is in reply to a family member of a Secret Service agent who was wondering if someone would attack the president.

Chappelle-Nadal told Missouri station KMOX that since other members of the legislature had not resigned despite marital infidelity and smoking in the capitol, she would not resign either. Chappelle-Nadal referred to the comment as a “mistake” and said that she is “owning up to” it.

Chappelle-Nadal told KMOX’s Carol Daniel, “There is no way in hell that I’m resigning. There are legislators who have cheated on their wives, they have smoked in the legislature, in the state capitol. If they have not been asked to resign for those acts, which I do believe that cheating on your wife or your spouse is immoral, I am not resigning for a mistake that I made and that I’m owning up to.”
She also said that while she wished she had chosen better words, she stands by the frustration and anger that led her to say she wished that the president was dead. . . . . . . Read More

UN Abortion Groups Attack Religious Medical Providers, Right of Conscience for Health Workers

NEW YORK, August 18 (C-Fam) In early August, an international group of abortion advocates met in Uruguay to discuss the potential removal of conscience protections for healthcare providers with regard to abortion.

Religious freedom is an obstacle to women’s health, according to conference organizer International Women’s Health Coalition (IWHC). The group encourages advocates to ensure “that professional bodies recognize that personal beliefs can seriously undermine the provision of women-centered, professional health services.”

The IWHC and co-sponsor Mujer y Salud en Uruguay (MYSU) chose to host the conference in Uruguay because it has one of the most permissive abortion laws in Latin America. Nevertheless, more than half of Uruguay’s medical providers refuse to perform abortions due to conscientious objection. High percentages of objectors are not uncommon in countries that allow legal abortion, including Ghana (97%) and Italy (70%).

Conference participants claimed that religious or moral objections to providing abortions “must be tackled,” arguing that women unable to obtain legal and “safe” abortions will inevitably seek potentially deadly clandestine procedures. Rather than encouraging women to choose life, they concluded that medical workers must be forced to cause death.

Among the featured speakers was Dr. Christian Fiala, an Austrian gynecologist who has published several articles denouncing rights of conscience. In his most recent article, Fiala said that conscientious objection “gives legitimacy to the religiously-based assumption that abortion is wrong,” and singled out the Catholic Church as an enforcer of “traditional (sexist) beliefs about women and motherhood.” According to Fiala, even if lawmakers are allowed consciences, doctors are not: “[i]f the treatment is legal… there is simply no excuse to refuse.”

Fiala’s commitment to the primacy of abortion led him to denounce what he called “faith-based medicine” and organized religion in general. Fiala expressed doubt that conscientious objection in Latin America may not be possible to “fix” “until organized religion loses much of its influence.” . . . Read More

Mike Huckabee: If They Tear Down Memorials They Find Offensive Can We Tear Down Abortion Clinics?

Reacting to growing racial tension culminating in the tearing down of United States monuments, pro-life former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee asked people to think about society’s reaction if he began tearing down things that offend him – like abortion clinics.

The former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate appeared Wednesday on Fox News to discuss the vandalism and other violence resulting from a white supremacist protest and counter-protest in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend and the tearing down of memorials across the country in recent days.

“Anarchists go and just tear down the statues [of Confederates and historical figures who were slave owners] because they are impatient with politicians doing it,” Huckabee said. “… that is not acceptable behavior, it is vandalism, it is anarchy, and it would be like me saying ‘I don’t like abortion clinics, so I’m going to go to tear them down because I find them offensive.’”
To be clear, LifeNews.com and the vast majority of pro-life organizations and individuals oppose illegal activity, including vandalism and other forms of violence. Huckabee’s comment was a hypothetical situation, and, later in the interview, he emphasized that he does not condone any illegal acts, either.

“Nobody would justify that, including me,” Huckabee said of tearing down abortion clinics. . . . Read More

Sarah Palin Condemns Iceland for Aborting Almost Every Baby With Down Syndrome

Former Gov. Sarah Palin is mother to a beautiful 9-year-old boy named Trig. He happens to have Down syndrome. You can imagine how she reacted, then, to the CBS report that Iceland is “eliminating” children with the syndrome via abortion.

“This intolerance for people who may not look like you is so wrong, it’s so evil,” Palin said on Fox News Tuesday night.

Iceland is a “beautiful country,” she recalled, but “it won’t be so beautiful it they continue down this path.”

Choking back tears, Palin was shocked that the government is trying to “snuff out the life” of those who don’t look like their subjective view of perfection. It is a culture that hearkens back to neo-Nazi Germany, she noted.

“Children with Down syndrome are “unique and make the world more unique,” Palin said.

Palin also criticized the “celebratory” tone CBS used when it tweeted about Iceland’s anti-life agenda. . . .

The vice presidential candidate and her son have been the victims of mockery since she entered the political spotlight. In 2011, Wonkette published a piece, which they have since removed, in which they called Trig “retarded.” No mother should have to subjected to such cruel rhetoric.

Palin acknowledged on Fox that she was “full of fear” when she was handed the diagnosis that Trig may be born with Down syndrome. She was “brought down to her knees” and asked God to prepare her.

“The minute Trig was born, the fear went anyway,” she said. . . . .Read More

Eighth Circuit Hands Down Another Pro-Life Victory . . .

. . . Arkansas my terminate Planned Parenthood as a Medicaid provider!

On Wednesday a three judge panel from the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Arkansas can decline to provide Medicaid reimbursements to abortion providers. The ruling comes as part of an ongoing lawsuit filed after the State of Arkansas cut Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 2015.

Family Council President Jerry Cox issued a statement : “The Eighth Circuit did the right thing today. Arkansans have made it clear time and again they do not want tax money going to abortion providers. Many Arkansans have moral objections to abortion. They don’t want their hard-earned money subsidizing abortion providers.”

Cox praised Governor Asa Hutchinson and Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge for defending the state’s decision to cut Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. “Governor Asa Hutchinson’s bold leadership is what led the state to cut ties with Planned Parenthood in the first place. Our governor has always been a staunch pro-life advocate. Arkansas’ attorney general is defending at least seven pro-life laws and policies in court right now. I don’t know of any attorney general in America who is doing more to fight for the right to life. Her team has won some major victories in the past few weeks, and I believe we will see more in the months to come.”

Gov. Asa Hutchinson issued the following statement in response to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling vacating the injunction that had prevented the state from terminating Planned Parenthood’s status as a Medicaid provider:

“In 2015, the state terminated its Medicaid provider agreement with Planned Parenthood because there was evidence that Planned Parenthood and its affiliates were acting in an unethical manner and engaging in what appeared to be wrongful conduct. I am pleased with the ruling of the 8th Circuit today reversing Judge Baker on her injunction that blocked the state from proceeding.

“The decision allows the state to proceed with the termination of Planned Parenthood as a Medicaid provider. This is a substantial legal victory for the right of the state to determine whether Medicaid providers are acting in accordance with best practices and affirms the prerogative of the state to make reasoned judgments on the Medicaid program.”

Trump Admin Demands End To Harmful Experiments Making Babies With 3 Parents

The Food and Drug Administration warned a fertility doctor to stop marketing an unapproved IVF technology that creates a human embryo using the DNA of three people.

In a strongly worded August 4 letter, the FDA reminded New York-based Dr. John Zhang that it had declined his request to run clinical trials on the experimental technique mitochondrial replacement technology, or MRT.

Since December 2015, Congress has prohibited the FDA from reviewing applications on clinical tests involving genetically modified human embryos “until safety and ethical issues can be resolved,” reports Bloomberg BNA.

“Also, researchers don’t know what impact the procedure will have on the babies it produces,” it notes.

MRT aims to prevent diseases passed through mitochondrial DNA by transferring the mother’s nuclear DNA to a donor egg in which the nucleus has been removed but the mitochondria remains.

Zhang, who runs New Hope Fertility Clinic and associated company Darwin Life, has previously been in the news for claiming to engineer the “first live birth” using the MRT technique he says he pioneered.

That was for a woman who carried the gene for Leigh’s syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. She had four miscarriages and the two children she delivered died at age six and eight months, according to CBS News.

Zhang created three-DNA human embryos for the couple in the States, then took the embryos to Mexico where he implanted them in the mother.

Creating genetically modified human embryos in a lab is allowed in the U.S. if federal funds aren’t used, but implanting them in a womb is prohibited, according to MIT Technology Review.

The mother gave birth to a boy in April 2016.

“This is the very first time at least in human reproduction that the offspring are produced with three parties – one sperm and different parts of two eggs,” Zhang told CBS News at the time. “So this is very revolutionary.” . . . Read More

Texas Governor Signs Bill Banning Taxpayer Funding of Abortions

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill today that bans taxpayer funding of abortions via the insurance industry.

Abbott signed House Bill 214 (HB 214) that will protect Texans from paying for the abortions of others through their tax dollars and health insurance premiums. The bill limits insurance coverage for abortion procedures. Under this new law Texans will not be forced to pay for elective abortions through their insurance plans. This legislation is an important piece of the Governor’s pro-life agenda that has been championed by Sen. Brandon Creighton and Rep. John Smithee this special session.

“As a firm believer in Texas values I am proud to sign legislation that ensures no Texan is ever required to pay for a procedure that ends the life of an unborn child,” said Governor Abbott in a statement to LifeNews. “This bill prohibits insurance providers from forcing Texas policy holders to subsidize elective abortions. I am grateful to the Texas legislature for getting this bill to my desk, and working to protect innocent life this special session.”. . .

SB 20 would ensure that ACA-subsidized plans, state employee plans, or private basic health insurance plans do not include coverage for elective abortions. Texans deserve the right to decide where their insurance and tax dollars go, and they should not be forced to fund the elective abortions of others. The majority of Texans are Pro-Life and neither want nor need insurance coverage for elective abortion. . . . Read More

Dems Blast President Trump's Defunding Planned Parenthood Sex-Ed Programs

The Trump administration is scaling back funding for a sex education program that started in 2010 under President Obama. The 81 Teen Pregnancy Prevention grantees were supposed to receive $200 million through 2020, but were informed by the Department of Health and Human Services last month that the money would dry up in June 2018.

The grantees were “perplexed” by the change, as were several Democratic lawmakers.

“This action is short-sighted and puts at risk the health and well-being of women and our most vulnerable youth who depend on the evidenced-based work that TPP Program grantees are doing across the nation,” a group of Democratic senators wrote in a letter to HHS Secretary Tom Price.

Yet, it’s not hard to figure out why the White House is not interested in continuing to support the program’s agenda. As LifeNews notes, this particular program has donated millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood.

Furthermore, Health and Human Services Department spokesman Mark Vafiades indicated that the Teen Pregnancy Prevention program has little to no impact on teen health. . . .

Alveda King: Abortion is Racism and Takes Away the Civil Rights of Unborn Babies

Alveda King the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King jr is responding today to the white supremacy protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.

King says the white supremacists definitely need to be condemned and that racism is a sin and a blight on society. But the niece of the slain civil rights leader says she believes that abortion is also racism because it denies civil rights to unborn children.

King told LifeNews:

As we see from the most recent racially motivated massacre in Virginia, racism is still alive and raising hell. Think about it. Racism is sin. Hatred is sin. Yet for whatever reason, the pot of domestic terrorism continues to be stirred under the guise of promoting “racial supremacy.”

The big lie is that we are separate races, when in fact the spiritual, scientific and biological fact is that we are one blood; one human race. Racism and hatred are deadly. This is why I so often quote my Uncle MLK: “We must learn to live together as brothers [and sisters], or perish together as fools. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

We should be grateful that President Trump is calling for a ceasefire on the violence. My King Family Legacy foundations have taught me that nonviolent conflict reconciliation is the key to ending these “race wars.”
But King also said abortion is racism — a message she admits some people don’t want to hear.

As one of God’s microphones, I’m often required to say what people don’t want to hear. Abortion is racism, in that abortion takes away the civil rights and lives of our weakest and most vulnerable members of the human race, unborn babies. . . . Read More

Almost 1 in 20 Deaths in the Netherlands Killed by Euthanasia

More statistics about euthanasia from the Netherlands, based on the latest figures from 2015. Nearly one death in 20 (4.5%) is now due to euthanasia.

The figures come from a letter in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. “It looks like patients are now more willing to ask for euthanasia and physicians are more willing to grant it,” said lead author Dr. Agnes van der Heide of Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam.

But the statistics for euthanasia alone masks the proportion of end-of-life decisions in the Netherlands. The figures for some categories overlap, but 4.5% of all deaths happened through euthanasia, 0.1% through physician-assisted suicide; and 18.3% through “continuous deep sedation.”

This last category is slippery and controversial. It accounts for nearly 1 death in 5 in the Netherlands. In some cases doctors agree that it is appropriate for refractory pain; but it can also be a form of “slow euthanasia” used to evade regulation and scrutiny.

. . . Bioethicists observed that the increase was to be expected. “Doctors become more confident in practicing euthanasia and more patients will start asking for it,” said Penney Lewis, co-director of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics at King’s College London.

Dr. van der Heide suggested that the small but increasing number of euthanasia deaths for people who were not terminally ill was troubling. “When assisted dying is becoming the more normal option at the end of life, there is a risk people will feel more inclined to ask for it,” she said. . . . Opponents of Catholic Pro-Life Teaching To Be Featured at Vatican Conference

Stefano Gennarini, J.D., C-FAM, Friday Fax: At an upcoming conference on global warming, the Vatican academies for science will present the work politicians and academics that support abortion and population control.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has been asked to recommend practical solutions to climate change on the first day of the Vatican conference in November. Her participation is especially controversial given that Bachelet introduced legislation to allow abortion in Chile last year that is currently pending. She has also promised to introduce a homosexual “marriage” bill soon.

The high profile pontifical event titled “Health of People and Planet: Our Responsibility” will highlight the “health consequences of climate change” and “make recommendations to be submitted directly to Pope Francis and other world leaders,” according to the Vatican website. Pope Francis will be represented by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Piero Parolin.

Columbia University economist and UN development guru Jeffrey Sachs will once again be present. His participation in pontifical events has been the criticized in pro-life media before. Sachs led the global effort to place abortion as one of the Millennium Development goals. As head of the Earth Institute at Columbia Sachs has spearheaded a revival of neo-Malthusian fears at the United Nations and academic circles warning that humanity is “trespassing planetary boundaries” and reaching the end of the “Earth’s caring capacity.” Sachs has also written that abortion is a “cost-effective” way to deal with unwanted children.

Sachs is said to be a frequent visitor of the Papal residence at Casa Santa Marta alongside the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies hosting the conference, Archbishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo. The two are credited as the architects of what the Washington Post described as the “coup” that delivered Pope Francis’ endorsement of the theory of catastrophic anthropogenic climate change in the 2015 papal encyclical Laudato Si. That encyclical provided much needed moral backing to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. President Barak Obama’s celebrated Paris Climate Agreement.

University of Washington researcher Howard Frumkin will present his work on a seminal joint Rockefeller-Lancet study on the environment and health. One of the conclusions of that study was that a “reduction in fertility” in developing countries would be positive for the environment.

The study recommends that increased contraception use be promoted in developing countries through mass media, the public health sector, and “culturally appropriate social marketing approaches to increase demand.” It only recommends a change to environmentally friendly lifestyles in wealthy countries, even though it finds that population growth in developed countries will have a “disproportionate effects on environmental sustainability because of their prevailing high consumption lifestyles.”

Representatives of the World Health Organization are also scheduled to speak at the conference about health effects of air pollution and climate change. WHO publications highlight access to contraception as a way to reduce carbon emissions and “mitigate” climate change, though recent studies by UN demographers deny the usefulness of more investments in contraception to prevent catastrophic climate change.

Well known population control theorists expected at the conference include Partha Dasgupta associated with Population Matters, and John Schellnhuber, founder of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Both are known for attempts to estimate the optimal absolute number of people that our planet can sustain.

The conference concept note on the Vatican website describes the threat of climate change as an “existential question of whether civilization as we know it can be extended beyond this century” and calls for “more drastic actions to limit air pollution and climate change below dangerous levels.” . . . .
