White House Uses Strong Pro-Life Policy in Proclamation

Phyllis Schlafly Eagles: St. Louis MO: At the beginning of April, the White House released a proclamation declaring this month as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Several lines into the March 29 document appears the line, "We must always remember that all children are blessings from our Creator. They are endowed from conception with value, purpose, and human dignity." [Emphasis added]

"This type of language indicates that the Trump Administration is poised to be the most pro-life Administration in recent history," said Ed Martin, president of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. "This document quickly slipped out of sight and mind as April roared into fiscal fights, foreign policy decisions, and political hit jobs run amok in the swap.

"We would do well to celebrate such strong pro-life language regarding conception coming from official White House documents. This serves as a reminder that President Trump has already put one pro-life justice on the Supreme Court. We see plans developing quickly for another open seat on the bench. Pro-life conservatives should coalesce behind the President now, and encourage the language and policy we read in this document.

"President Trump is giving us a real opportunity to advance the fundamental human right to life, and we must praise him for it and encourage it! If we want to make change happen in Washington, we must praise politicians when they do the right things and push them to continue! This is a real opportunity for change in our nation, and we ask pro-life conservatives to join Phyllis Schlafly Eagles in seizing the momentum!"
Phyllis Schlafly Eagles is a non-profit and its mission is to enable conservative and pro-family men and women to participate in the process of self-government and public policy making so that America will continue to be a land of individual liberty, respect for family integrity, public and private virtue, and private enterprise.

TV Networks Ignore Pro-Life Walkout . . . Covered Gun Walkout

It was a tale of two protests. After a school walkout against gun violence in March, students across the country organized a pro-life walkout in support of the unborn and pregnant and parenting students. But the networks only covered one of them.

On Wednesday, the three broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) never once mentioned the pro-life walkout during their news shows on the night of the event, April 11. In contrast, the same evening shows devoted more than 10 minutes to the gun walkout the day it happened. This comes after the networks covered the March for Our Lives 13 times more than the pro-life March for Life.

The walkout site listed 191 high schools and 81 colleges as participating. But according to a Tuesday statement from Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life of America (SFLA), which helped organize the event, “more than 350 students and student group leaders from across the country have contacted Students for Life about their plans to stand with pregnant and parenting students.”

The site called for an end to abortion and the defunding of Planned Parenthood . . .

. . . Hawkins reacted to the discrepancy in coverage.

“No one is surprised that media bias is so obvious when it comes to abortion,” she began. “People who are passionate about the life issue, about mothers and their preborn infants, know that the media doesn’t like to cover this human rights atrocity,” she added, pointing to coverage of the March for Life as an example. But that doesn’t mean it was right, she added.

“It’s still worth noting that the media went all in for the anti-gun walkout, talking about lives lost and free speech, while ignoring the #ProLifeWalkout, in which we mourn the fact that one-fourth of this generation has been lost to abortion, and students have a right to speak about that as well,” she continued.

While the gun walkout was larger, Hawkins stressed that it boasted more help from powerful outsiders, including the media.

“The Astroturf nature of the anti-gun walkout, with lots of money coming in from politically well-connected, national organizations and celebrities along with the media and school support definitely helped with their turnout,” she said. “Or at least it looked good on TV.”“No one is surprised that media bias is so obvious when it comes to abortion,” she began. “People who are passionate about the life issue, about mothers and their preborn infants, know that the media doesn’t like to cover this human rights atrocity,” she added, pointing to coverage of the March for Life as an example. Democrats Trash Trump Judicial Nominee Wendy Vitter Over Her Pro-Life Views

Wendy Vitter
President Trump's judicial nominee Wendy Vitter’s personal pro-life views were under intense scrutiny from several Democratic senators at her confirmation hearing Wednesday. Vitter was repeatedly asked about her pro-life beliefs and whether they would interfere with her role as a judge. She was also grilled about statements made in past, pro-life speaking engagements.

The main questions from Democratic senators centered around two appearances she made, that were recently cited by the abortion giant Planned Parenthood in an op-ed targeting Vitter prior to the hearing. One appearance was as the moderator of a 2013 Louisiana Right to Life panel where views that birth control is linked to breast cancer and domestic violence were aired by one of the participants. At another 2013 appearance, she said Planned Parenthood killed “over 150,000 females a year.”

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) grilled Vitter on that first appearance saying “on this panel you endorsed the views of the speaker who preceded you, Dr. Angela LanFranchi, an anti-abortion doctor known for trading in the widely debunked claim that abortions cause breast cancer.”

She said Vitter urged “the audience to distribute these materials,” and called them “facts.”

Vitter replied that she “had never heard those views before,” and “at the end when I was giving action items on them what I was trying to encourage the participants who had heard this to do was to speak to their own medical provider because I thought a doctor, your own doctor would be the best person to provide information to you and provide you their opinion on this.”

Hirono later brought up Vitter’s statement that Planned Parenthood kills “over 150,000 females a year.”

“I assumed you were referring to aborted fetuses who were females, is that what you were referring to when you said, ‘Planned Parenthood kills 150,000 females a year?’” She asked.

“That is correct,” Vitter replied.

Asked about failing to initially disclose these statements, Vitter clarified that the omissions were inadvertent and “there was never any intent to do anything but be forthcoming with this committee about both my personal and professional life.”

“I am pro-life,” Vitter stated as Hirono’s questioning continued, saying that view has been apparent throughout her public life.

She added that she valued her integrity and “if I say that I will take a conscious effort and put aside my personal views, my religious views, and my political views, and judge a matter on the facts presented to me and the law, that’s what I will do.”

As Hirono’s questioning concluded, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) told Vitter, “your religious views are your own…I hope we never get to the point as a country where a religious view point becomes either a qualification or a disqualification in fact we have multiple provisions of our Constitution that expressly prohibit that from happening.”

However, Vitter was repeatedly asked about her pro-life statements and beliefs by Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). . . . Read More

Pro-Life Speaker Paul Ryan Will Not Run for Re-Election

House Speaker Paul Ryan
Pro-life house Speaker Paul Ryan has indicated that he will not seek reelection to his congressional seat based in Wisconsin. That will set up a leadership battle within the Republican Party to replace him as Speaker.

The number two and number three Republicans in the house are both pro-life and both apparently considering running for the speakership position. Majority Leder Kevin McCarthy of California, Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and North Carolina’s Mark Meadows, a leading voice of the conservative Freedom Caucus. All three are strongly pro-life on abrtion and have consistent pro-life voting records.

Ryan is stepping down because of the time demands associated with being Speaker, which took him away from his children too much.

Ryan announced he is retiring after this term, arguing his kids only know him as “a weekend dad,” and he is “setting new priorities in his life” as his children approach adulthood.

“The truth is, it’s easy for it to take over everything in your life,” Ryan said of the speaker’s job, adding that “there are other things in life that are feeling as well,” including his role as a father.

“This was really about two things,” Ryan added. “I accomplished much of what I came here to do, and my kids are not getting any younger.”

“And if I stay, my kids are only going to know me as a weekend dad and that is something I cannot do. That is really it right there.”

Ryan said he is not resigning and will remain through January. . . . Read More

Montana Judge Forces State to Allow Nurses to Kill Babies in Abortions

Montana nurses may begin aborting unborn babies after a judge blocked the state from enforcing one of its abortion regulations last week.

The decision resulted from a lawsuit by two pro-abortion groups that consistently put the abortion industry ahead of women’s safety.

KTVH News reports District Judge Mike Menahan of Helena granted a request by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights to temporarily block a law requiring that doctors perform abortions.

“At this state of the litigation, the state has not met its burden of showing a compelling state interest in restricting Montana women’s fundamental right to privacy,” he wrote last week.

Here’s more from the report:

Last month, state lawyers argued against an immediate ban on enforcing the law.

They pointed to an American Journal of Public Health article showing that 1.8 percent of abortions performed by a “newly trained nurse” had complications, compared to 0.9 percent by physician-attended abortions – and said therefore the state had a compelling interest to ban nurses from performing the procedure.

Yet Menahan said the same article concluded that the complications were “clinically equivalent” among newly trained nurses, midwives, physicians and physician’s assistants.

One Montana woman, Helen Weems, hopes to start aborting unborn babies at her Whitefish facility as soon as she is licensed as a nurse, according to the report.

Struggling to find enough doctors willing to abort unborn babies, pro-abortion groups have filed several lawsuits to force states to allow nurses and midwives to abort unborn babies. They claim the issue is about restricting access to abortion. . . . Read More

Neil Gorsuch Has Been a Breath of Fresh Air for Pro-Life Conservatives

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch
Looking back, there were probably a lot of things that motivated Americans to elect Donald Trump. But three biggest had to be Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the empty seat in the U.S. Supreme Court. Bewildered by the radical policies of Obama, scared by the promises of Clinton to continue them, and worried that another activist justice who would expand them, voters made the choice no one expected. And the president returned the favor — doing more for the preservation of the Constitution in one nomination, Neil Gorsuch’s, than some men do in their entire term.

For millions of Americans who put the Court at the top of their concerns in 2016, April 10th of last year was a moment of extraordinary relief. President Trump, who went on to keep a lot of promises, fulfilled one of the biggest when Neil Gorsuch was sworn in. The strict constructionist is, as experts will tell you, the real deal. “I really don’t think we could have seen a justice any more committed to textualism and originalism than he is,” says a professor at Georgetown Law. “He has lived up to very high expectations.”

That’s even more astonishing when you consider whose shoes the Coloradan was filling: Antonin Scalia’s. Few members of the Supreme Court have been — or will be — more adamant about interpreting the Constitution in its original form than the late Scalia. But in 12 short months, liberals are already pining for the outspoken Catholic, complaining that Gorsuch “makes [us all] miss Scalia.” The 50-year-old is everything the longtime justice could have hoped for — a humble, esteemed, and deferential jurist whose legacy will almost certainly outlast the president who appointed him.

“I can report,” the rookie justice told the Federalist Society last November, a person can be both a committed originalist and textualist and be confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States… Originalism has regained its place at the table of constitutional interpretation, and textualism in the reading of statutes has triumphed. And neither one is going anywhere on my watch.” . . . . Read More

Nebraska Gov. Signs Budget That Defunds Planned Parenthood Abortion

For the next two years at least, Nebraska taxpayers will not be forced to fund Planned Parenthood and other abortion groups.

Gov. Pete Ricketts signed a two-year $8.8 billion state budget into law Wednesday with a measure that prohibits tax dollars to groups that promote or provide abortions, the AP reports.

“Today, I signed new pro-life budget language into law. This provision ensures that Title X taxpayer dollars do not fund abortion services, including abortion referrals, at any clinic in Nebraska,” Ricketts said.

The budget prohibits Title X family planning funds from going to any group that “performs, assists with the performance of, provides directive counseling in favor of, or refers for abortion.” The provision allows Planned Parenthood and other abortion groups to qualify for the funding if they stop aborting unborn babies or encouraging abortions. Groups also may qualify if they completely separate their abortion practices from their health care services. . . . Read More

Pro-lifers Unleash on Dog Tweet

by Tony Perkins: Believe it or not, Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards is a huge believer in adoption. For dogs. Yesterday, before heading out on a national book tour, the boss of America's richest abortion business decided to act out the title of her new memoir: Make Trouble. In a Twitter post that struck most people as either incredibly insensitive or shockingly unaware, Richards took a moment to pitch what her organization usually doesn't: compassion.

Above a picture of her dachshund, Richards encourages people to #AdoptDontShop. Of course, the idea of rescuing dogs isn't a bad one, but it's certainly a stark contrast to what she's been advocating for babies the last 12 years. Maybe if children were fluffy with four legs, she'd understand the importance of saving them too! Instead, she talks about giving pets homes while her own business spends its days ripping unborn children out of theirs. Unfortunately, that's the hypocrisy of the Left: Forget the humans, save the dogs!

If Richards wants more Americans to adopt, you sure could have fooled us. Planned Parenthood is so obsessed with making a buck that the idea of adoption rarely -- if ever -- comes up. Sure, the organization will take credit for a few moms choosing life to feed the lie that it does more than abortion, but the numbers are hardly flattering. In its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood could only claim one adoption referral for every 83 abortions. If Cecile wants to rescue dogs, she might want to show a little more concern for their prospective owners.

Back in the mid-nineties, when people still used the words "safe, legal, and rare" with a straight face, Planned Parenthood may have actually seen some value in adoption. They referred for 11,866 of them in 1994 -- five times more than today. Almost 25 years later, the focus has changed. In this business, it's about cash – not kids. And 3.5 million abortions later, Richards's 12 years have proven how lucrative Planned Parenthood's killing machine can be. Sitting on a record-setting $1.45 billion in revenue, the group can afford its pet political projects and massive leadership salaries. (At last check, Richards made $700,000 a year -- almost twice the salary of the president of the United States.) Not bad for a "nonprofit."

The only thing Planned Parenthood has more of than money is controversy. And both seem to be fueling Americans' urgency to cut the organization's taxpayer ties. They know, like we do, that if Planned Parenthood is spending 96 percent of its time on abortion, it certainly doesn't need our $537 million for the measly four percent that's left. For starters, abortion is a cash cow. They could just as easily pay for the rest of their operation with its profits. Secondly, how are we supposed to believe that the more than half-billion in federal and state funds is actually going to the tiny sliver of other services?

Simple. We can't. Even if Richards's group were trustworthy (a prospect that faded with every mammogram lie, every sexual abuse cover-up, every invoice for baby body parts), there's no denying that the massive pool of taxpayer funds helps free up the money Planned Parenthood needs for the deadlier side of business -- or its election lobbies. Sure, it's illegal for Richards to spend a penny of government money on abortion or campaigning, but Congress makes it a whole lot easier to spend politically when they're rewarding the group financially. Need proof? Check out today's news from Wisconsin, where a Planned Parenthood clinic (one of 600 such clinics in the U.S.) has just been fined by the FEC for hiding more than $116,000 in support for Hillary Clinton's campaign. Imagine how many of the other state chapters are operating under the radar, refusing to disclose their political expenses.

For those reasons (and so many more), I can understand the outrage from pro-lifers that Congress kept the taxpayer gravy train flowing in last month's omnibus spending package. I also understand the limits of the current GOP majority, which is the biggest hurdle to accomplishing what 60 percent of Americans want: defunding Planned Parenthood. But some things are worth fighting for, and life is one of them. In the meantime, FRC is hoping that Donald Trump will do what Republicans did not: sever some of taxpayers' financial ties to Richards's group. Behind closed doors, there's a serious discussion taking place right now in Washington about one of the weapons at the president's disposal -- a long-forgotten rule from the Reagan years that could blow an $80-million hole in Planned Parenthood's accounts.

If the Trump administration revives the "co-location" regulation from the 1980s, Planned Parenthood could still get Title X funds, but they wouldn't be able to offer those services in the same clinics where they perform abortions. They'd have to split up their offices -- probably at great expense. Ultimately, Planned Parenthood would be forced to choose between dropping their abortion services from any location that gets Title X dollars and moving those abortion operations offsite. Either way, it could take away a significant $80-million cushion from the group's family planning funds. Until Republican reinforcements arrive, that would certainly help take the sting out of the current situation.

In the meantime, Richards is out on the road, missing her dog -- and more importantly, missing the point. The next time Planned Parenthood's president wants to rescue something, she might want to consider the next generation.
Tony Perkins is President of the Family Research Council . This article was on Tony Perkin's Washington Update and written with the aid of FRC senior writers.

Abortion Activists Lobby Google to Censor Pro-Life Search Results

. . . Showing Abortion Alternatives

Abortion activists now are badgering Google employees on their way to work in an effort to convince the internet giant to block pro-life pregnancy centers from search results.

No longer even claiming the label “pro-choice,” abortion activists now promote just one choice for women – abortion. And any organization that promotes other options to pregnant moms is bad in their eyes.

Business Insider reports a group of abortion activists rode bicycles behind Google’s shuttle buses Tuesday in San Francisco with signs claiming, “Searching for abortion care? Google will send you to fake, anti-abortion clinics.”

UltraViolet and Credo, two pro-abortion groups connected with Planned Parenthood, organized the protest, according to the report. It’s all part of a larger smear campaign against non-profit, volunteer-based pregnancy centers. . . .

“Our goal with the campaign is for Google to stop being complicit with these clinics, stop running fake abortion clinic ads,” Roland said.

Despite all their claims, abortion activists have not been able to find “any real-life woman claiming she’s been mistreated, tricked, or misled in any way by a pregnancy help center,” Jay Hobbs wrote recently at the Washington Examiner.

Christian Post reports pregnancy centers have a near 99-percent client satisfaction rate. . . .

Yet, pregnancy centers are under attack – likely because they are cutting into the abortion industry’s profits. They offer pregnant and parenting moms free, life-affirming counseling and support, including diapers, cribs, maternity clothes and more. Many are completely funded by donations and primarily run by volunteers. Every year, they provide hope and encouragement to tens of thousands of women who otherwise may have aborted their unborn babies.

And for this charitable work, they are under heavy attack. Right now, California pregnancy centers are battling a pro-abortion law that forces them to advertise free taxpayer funded abortions to their clients. The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard arguments in the case.

As is evident with the Google campaign, even companies that refuse to block life-affirming pregnancy help information are being targeted by these radical abortion activists. Nothing short of a complete embrace of abortion for any reason up to birth, it seems, will satisfy abortion activists. . . . Read More

19 Democrat Attorneys General Want to Force Christian Doctors to Do Abortions

Should doctors and nurses be forced to participate in interventions they find morally abhorrent or unwarranted? As one example, should ethical rules require pediatricians to medically inhibit normal puberty as demanded by parents to “treat” their child’s gender dysphoria — even if they are morally opposed to the concept and/or the supposed treatment?

Some say yes. Thus, influential bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel argues that medical professionals are obligated to accede to the patient’s right to receive legal interventions if they are generally accepted within the medical community — specifically including abortion. Emanuel stated doctors who are morally or religiously opposed, should do the procedure anyway or procure a doctor they know will accede to the patient’s demands. Either that, or get out of medicine.

Supporters of “medical conscience” argue that forcing doctors to participate in interventions they find morally abhorrent would be involuntary medical servitude. They want to strengthen existing laws that protect doctors, nurses, and pharmacists’ who refuse participation in legal interventions to which they are morally or religiously opposed.

Now, medical conscience looks to become another battlefront in our bitter partisan divide. After the Trump administration announced rules that will place greater emphasis on enforcing federal laws protecting medical conscience, Democratic state attorneys general promised to seek a court order invalidating the new rule. From the New York Law Journal story:

But 19 state attorneys general, led by New York’s Eric Schneiderman, argue that it is the patients who will be discriminated against under the proposed rule. This is particularly true, they argue, in the cases of marginalized patients who already face discrimination in trying to obtain health care, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients and male patients seeking HIV/AIDS preventative medications, according to the comments filed in opposition to the rule.

“If adopted, the proposed rule … will needlessly and carelessly upset the balance that has long been struck in federal and state law to protect the religious freedom of providers, the business needs of employers, and the health care needs of patients,” they state.

The stakes can only increase as moral controversies in health care intensify in coming years. . . . Read More

Gov. Scott Walker Signs Bill Banning Taxpayer-Funded Abortions for State Employees

Many states still have taxpayer funding of abortions and one of the areas in which that often occurs is funding abortions for state employees. But that won’t happen anymore in Wisconsin thanks to a new bill Wisconsin governor Scott Walker signed into law.

Walker has been a pro-life champion as governor and has signed numerous pieces of pro-life legislation. The latest measure would ensure that taxpayers in Wisconsin are not forced to fund abortions on babies of state employees.

That’s good news for the pro-life group Wisconsin Right to Life.

“Today, Governor Walker signed AB 128 into law, which ensures no taxpayer dollars pay for elective abortions under state employees’ health plans,” stated Heather Weininger, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life, in an email to LifeNews. “Wisconsin Right to Life has been waiting 23 years for this major step to roll back taxpayer funding for abortion, and we are very happy to see this long-awaited legislation signed into law.”

Since 1995, there have been no limits on abortion coverage for state employees’ health plans, despite Wisconsin law prohibiting taxpayer subsidization of elective abortions. The State Assembly passed AB 128 in November of 2017, and the State Senate passed the bill in February of 2018. . . . Read More

Government Accountability Office Finds Billions of Tax Dollars Supporting Abortion Providers

A new extensive report released by the Government Accountability Office yesterday shows nearly $1.5 billion tax dollars went to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood Federation of America and International Planned Parenthood Federation between 2013 and 2015. This report was requested by several members of the House and Senate in 2016, including our own Missouri Senator Roy Blunt as well Senators James Lankford of Oklahoma and Joni Ernst of Iowa.

"It is appalling that taxpayers are forced to support abortion providers at all," said Ed Martin, President of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles. "This new report shows a number even more outrageous than we previously knew.

"We applaud President Trump's 2017 reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy, which denies federal foreign aid to entities that provide abortion services. This new GAO report shows a shocking lack of transparency in our domestic spending. We call on the White House and Congress to end this abhorrent use of Americans' hard-earned money.

"Phyllis Schlafly was quite close with Congressman Henry Hyde of Illinois, for whom the federal Hyde Amendment is named. For 40 years this amendment has stood between federal tax dollars and abortions, but we see now that the federal bureaucracy has abused the letter of the law and acted without accountability."

Trump Names Pro-Life Congressman Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State

Mike Pompeo
President Donald Trump continues placing pro-life advocates in leading international policy positions. Today he named a pro-life former Congressman as his secretary of state.

Trump announced this morning former Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo, who serves currently as Director of Central Intelligence, will replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Pompeo has a long record of supporting pro-life legislation and speaking out in favor of life and his nomination immediately earned the praise of pro-life advocates.

“This will be considered good news by pro-life and pro-family advocates since Pompeo has a lengthy record in support of a right to life,” said CFAM President Austine Ruse. “The reason this is important to pro-lifers is that the under the Democrats the U.S. became a font of radical social policy around the world and at the UN. The expectation is that Pompeo understands this and will put a stop to it.”

Ruse outlined Pompeo’s pro-life history during his tenure in the House of Representatives:

As a Congressman, Pompeo said he believed life begins at conception and ends at natural death. He co-sponsored the Sanctity of Human Life Act which said, “each human life begins with fertilization, cloning, or its functional equivalent, at which time every human has all legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood…”

Pompeo co-sponsored the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act that called for the prohibition of federal funding to any group that performs abortions.

Pompeo co-sponsored a bill that would have included the unborn child in 14th amendment protections.

He voted to prohibit abortion information at school health centers. He voted to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood and voted to defund the UN Population Fund.
Pompeo said, “As a Kansan, I hold a deep reverence for the sanctity of life, the solidarity of family, and the solemnity of marriage. I will continue the fight to uphold these fundamental ideals each and every day. I am, and always will be pro-life and will defend life from conception to natural death. I will continue to oppose any taxpayer funding for abortion.” . . . Read More:

Record-Breaking -100,000 Pro-Life People Rally in Ireland Against Legalizing Abortion

Save the 8th has said that its campaign is “energised and motivated ” by the huge attendance at today’s Rally for Life in Dublin, which saw up to 100,000 people take to the streets to reject the Government’s plan for a UK-style abortion regime in Ireland.

Niamh Uí Bhriain of Save the 8th said that the crowds who thronged Dublin city centre showed that the government’s abortion proposal had woken a sleeping giant and that the campaign now expected a surge in volunteers to work towards a No vote in the abortion referendum in May.

“These huge numbers are a rising of the people against the media and political elites and against the powerful international abortion industry who have poured millions into a campaign attacking our pro-life laws. Ireland is at a defining point in our history, and we are challenging the people to reject the abortion industry and to demand a better answer for mothers and babies,” she said. “Abortion has no place in a compassionate and progressive society.” . . . . . . 40 Days for Life Spring 2018 Campaign Saves 274 Babies From Abortion So Far

by Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Are you ready for some very encouraging news to start the week?

You’ve come to the right place! 40 Days for Life campaign leaders tell us that so far this campaign … 274 babies have been spared from abortion – that we know of!

Here are a couple of the ones we DO know about!

Houston, Texas

One of the 40 Days for Life volunteers outside Planned Parenthood in Houston noticed two women and a child in a car parked outside.

The vigil participant felt drawn to them … and soon learned that one of the women just found out she was pregnant — and thinking about getting an appointment at Planned Parenthood.

When she heard that, the volunteer pleaded with the young woman. “Oh, please leave this place! Look at that little girl in the back of the car! That baby inside of you is just a little girl or a little boy.”

As she sat in the car, the mother began to cry … and very soon she left without going into the abortion facility.

The sidewalk counselor was overjoyed. “My prayer was answered right here and now!”

St. Louis, Missouri

A group of eighth graders joined the 40 Days for Life vigil outside Planned Parenthood in St. Louis.

They prayed from a distance as sidewalk counselors tried to connect with women driving into the facility’s parking lot.

“Suddenly, something changed,” said Brian, the St. Louis leader, “and the teenagers knew to start praying harder.”

They watched as a car turned around and headed off to a pregnancy resource center. “This was one of the 17 turnarounds we have been blessed to see so far this campaign,” Brian said.

The students reported that what they saw was profoundly touching. They rode back to school quietly, thoughtfully … and changed.

U.S. Taxpayers Gave Abortion Groups $1.6 Billion In Three Tears

by Calvin Freiburger: Abortion organizations received approximately $1.6 billion of U.S. taxpayer money from 2013 to 2015, according to a new government report.

This report comes from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which examined federal funding for providers of “preventive, reproductive, and diagnostic health care services in the United States or abroad.”

According to the report, during the fiscal years 2013 to 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) gave away a total of roughly $27 billion in such funds. Some of this money funded abortion entities International Planned Parenthood Federation, Marie Stopes International, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

Some money also went to organizations like federally qualified health centers, which don’t commit abortions but often do dispense potentially abortifacient drugs.

Most of the $1.6 billion went to PPFA. This is consistent with the more than $500 million in federal funding the abortion giant reports annually.

The London-based Marie Stopes received $110 million over the three year period. Planned Parenthood’s international arm received $14 million.

“No matter our views on abortion, or the party label beside our name, we must ensure that our money is spent responsibly and with integrity,” said Rep. Diane Black, R-TN. She was among the lawmakers who commissioned the report.

“Abortion is not family planning,” said Black. “Abortion is family destruction, and the fact that $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars is funneled to this industry is sickening. The American people deserve better.”

Planned Parenthoods that received the most money are under investigation
The report also breaks down Planned Parenthood subsidies by affiliate. It indicates that the five biggest beneficiaries of government money were Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, and Planned Parenthood Northern California.

In December 2016, the U.S. House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives referred all of these affiliates except for Orange and San Bernardino to the U.S. Justice Department for criminal investigation for trafficking aborted baby body parts.

The Justice Department is still investigating Planned Parenthood over the scandal.

The Susan B. Anthony List noted that these particular abortion affiliates received $544 million, or more than a third of the total funding.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dorothy Fulgerson was quoted in promotional literature for biomedical company StemExpress that highlighted the “financially profitable” nature of partnering with abortion facilities, despite federal laws against selling human organs.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles harbored PPFA Senior Director of Medical Services Dr. Deborah Nucatola, who was filmed discussing how to alter abortion procedures so as to obtain organs in usable condition, in direct violation of federal law.

Black’s press release also quotes Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ, as thanking President Trump for reinstating and expanding the Mexico City Policy, which forbids tax dollars from funding overseas abortions.

Marie Stopes International and the International Planned Parenthood Federation opted to forego U.S. aid money under the Trump administration rather than spend it exclusively on non-abortion purposes.

“A similar protection should become the standard for all government funding; abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood – responsible for killing more than seven million unborn children – must no longer be subsidized by the American taxpayer,” said Smith.

Money is ‘fungible’
Smith has introduced legislation to permanently forbid taxpayer funding of abortion. It has passed the U.S. House 238 to 183. It has not been acted upon in the U.S. Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, has suggested he will not pursue pro-life legislation without 60 votes to break a Democrat filibuster.

Black, meanwhile, has introduced legislation that would place a one-year moratorium on federal funding to Planned Parenthood and redirect the money to community health centers. Black has argued that defunding Planned Parenthood year-by-year rather than permanent law can overcome this hurdle, since budget measures can still pass the Senate by simple majority.

Planned Parenthood’s defenders argue that because existing law forbids tax dollars from being spent on abortions, defunding it would only hinder the organization’s other alleged health services. But pro-lifers note that money is fungible, meaning that public funding Planned Parenthood uses for approved purposes frees funds from other sources to be spent on abortions. The Susan B. Anthony List reports that the $326,400,000 rise in Planned Parenthood’s federal funding from 2000 to 2013 “resulted in a 66 percent increase in the number of abortions and a 61 percent decrease in the number of adoption referrals.”

Satanic Temple Opposing Pro-Life Laws in Federal Court

by Jerry Cox: According to The Kansas City Star, the Satanic Temple has filed a federal lawsuit opposing a pro-life law in Missouri.

The Satanic Temple reportedly filed the lawsuit on behalf of a Missouri woman, claiming the state’s informed consent law requiring doctors to wait 72 hours before performing an abortion is unconstitutional.

Although I doubt the Satanists will be able to get the courts to strike down Missouri’s informed consent law, the case could have ramifications for Arkansas.

Arkansas and Missouri have similar informed-consent laws for abortion, and both states are in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

That means a pro-life victory for Missouri in the Eighth Circuit could help reinforce pro-life laws in Arkansas or shape our state’s pro-life legislation in the future.
Jerry Cox is the founder and president of Family Council and the Education Alliance and a contributing author to the ARRA News Service.

Abortion Activist Arrested on DUI & Drug Charges, Faces Deportation For Being in U.S. Illegally

Alejandra Pablos
An abortion activist with a history of breaking the law could be deported after she was detained Wednesday by immigration officials.

Alejandra Pablos, 32, is an abortion and immigration activist who works for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, Rewire reports. She also works with We Testify, a pro-abortion group that encourages women to publicly share how they benefited from aborting their unborn babies.

On Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Pablos in Arizona, potentially due to her criminal record, Phoenix New Times reports.

Pablos is a green card holder and was a legal permanent resident from Mexico; however, because she repeatedly has been convicted of criminal charges, her immigration status now is in jeopardy, according to the report.

Her convictions include two DUIs and other minor convictions, and she was arrested for allegations of trespassing and obstruction of justice in January, the report states. She spent some time in prison for the offenses, and her criminal record goes back to 2006, according to the report. . . . Read More

Four Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinics Caught Selling Aborted Baby Parts Got $544 Million in Tax Dollars

Today the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report on taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and other entities that perform abortion during fiscal years 2013-2015. . . .

The report is the first to break down funding amounts by Planned Parenthood affiliate, showing that $544 million – more than one-third of total funding – went to four affiliates that have since been referred to the Justice Department for investigation for their role in the harvest and sale of the organs of aborted babies.

The top five Planned Parenthood recipients are listed below,  . . .

1. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte – $229 million
Supplied organs to StemExpress; Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dorothy Fulgerson is quoted in promotional materials that tout “financially profitable” partnerships between abortion facilities and the procurement company

2. Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties – $118 million
Supplied organs to DV Biologics, which admitted violating federal law as part of a settlement with the Orange County District Attorney’s office

3. Planned Parenthood Los Angeles – $106 million
Dr. Deb Nucatola, abortionist at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, is seen in the first Center for Medical Progress video explaining how to manipulate the baby into breech position in a late-term abortion to get intact organs.

4. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest – $105 million
According to former medical director Dr. Katharine Sheehan, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest supplied organs to Advanced Bioscience Resources, Inc. (ABR) for more than ten years. ABR charges $340 per second-trimester fetal tissue specimen, from which abortion facilities were paid $60 per specimen.

5, Planned Parenthood Northern California – $104 million
The Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives referred Planned Parenthood Northern California (as well as Planned Parenthood Mar Monte) for systematic violations of HIPAA for disclosing individually identifiable, private medical information about patients to StemExpress to meet the company’s organ harvesting quotas. . . . University Removes Poster Honoring Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger

Pro-life students in the state of Missouri are celebrating a victory today. They successfully got the cam[pus library at the University of Missouri to take down a poster honoring racist Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. . . .

The removal is the end result of a request by Students for Life to remove Sanger from the library, because of her support for eugenics. The library originally said they were going to remove it during their next review, but has immediately removed it.

Kristen Wood, president of Mizzou Students for Life, applauded the library for its move.

“We applaud the library for removing the poster and no longer celebrating Margaret Sanger and her eugenicist views. At the same time, we have told the library we expect they will never put the poster back up again, and if they do we will continue with our petitions and public pressure. The university should never be celebrating and promoting someone who publicly opposed people in poverty and racial minorities from having children, and someone who supported putting people on birth control to prevent them from having children,” she told LifeNews. . . . Trump’s Decision to Defund International Planned Parenthood Has Curtailed the Global Abortion Agenda

Many rituals are associated with Inauguration Day in the United States: the Oath of Office, inaugural balls, and Washington-area residents whose party lost the election listing their homes on Airbnb, just to name a few. And then there’s a lesser-known ritual that’s just as established but even more important: the argument over the Mexico City Policy.

First instituted in 1984 by Ronald Reagan, the Mexico City Policy derives its name from the venue of that year’s U.N. conference on “Population and Development.” The policy states that, as a condition of receiving federal funds, non-governmental organizations agree they will “neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.”

Every time the White House changes party hands, the Mexico City Policy also changes. Like clockwork. So when Democrats like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama move in to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, they rescind the Mexico City Policy. When Republicans like George Bush and Donald Trump come to town, they restore the policy in some form.

Each time the policy is restored, abortion advocates start wringing their hands, warning that the U. S. is putting women’s lives at risk. They cite figures about deaths from “preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.” And recently, they’ve claimed that the latest iteration of the policy is forcing organizations to choose between treating HIV/AIDS and providing “life-saving reproductive health services.”

It’s not clear, of course, how in the world a policy specifically directed at abortion prevents anyone from addressing real health issues. And they conveniently omit the fact that the policy specifically exempts referrals in cases of “rape, incest, or endangerment of the life of the woman.” . . .

Christian institutions provide one-third of the medical care in Africa, and they want to promote health, physical and spiritual, not a “culture of death.” That’s why they support the Mexico City Policy.

On the other hand, we shouldn’t be a bit surprised that groups like Planned Parenthood hate it. It denies their funding, and directly challenges their deep, historic, and ideological commitment to abortion on demand.

Which is why denying them funding overseas is a positive development. Now if we could only find a way to deny that funding here at home. . . . Read More

Who’s Better at Parenting: Parents or Your State’s Government?

by Stephanie Curry: Previously, we shared the jarring news that the state of Ohio had removed a young girl (who identifies as a boy) from her home because her parents refused to allow their daughter to be subject to extreme and irreversible medical interventions in the name of “gender transitioning”.

The parents of this Ohio teen girl did their research and decided experimental sex-change hormones and surgery would harm their daughter for a lifetime. The parents instead opted to get their daughter basic talk therapy. They believed therapy could help their daughter work through her depression, anxiety, and gender identity issues.

Despite what the Left believes, parents are best at parenting.

Parents are in the unique position to offer the most protection, support, and love to their child. Not the government. Yet, the state government in Ohio thinks they know better. Ohio devastated this family by removing their daughter from the protection of her parents to place her with a family who would approve the use of experimental drugs and body-mutilating procedures. Does that sound like love?

It doesn’t end there. Ohio legislators also think they know children better than parents and are currently considering a Therapy Ban Bill (SB 126) that would make certain basic talk therapy illegal. The same therapy these Ohio parents sought for their daughter.

Put a different way, some elected officials have determined that basic talk therapy to help this Ohio girl learn to love herself as a girl should be banned, but permanently sterilizing and body-mutilating medical interventions are fine.

This isn’t just happening in Ohio. Washington, New York, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and fifteen other states are considering legislation that would make talk therapy affirming children’s own biological sex illegal. California is treading on dangerous ground by seeking to make this type of therapy illegal for some adults! It is incomprehensible that leftist activists believe a teen (or even adult) is entitled to make a decision about whether or not to drastically change their body chemically and physically, but teens and their parents can’t make a decision to see a licensed therapist to help them learn to love the body they were given.

Is your state considering banning therapy for children?
This map includes all the states currently considering a Therapy Ban Bill. Purple and red represent states that are considering a therapy ban bill as you read this, though the red states are in danger of becoming law. Blue states already have a therapy ban in law. As you look at this map, you may see an opportunity to join Family Policy Alliance in taking action to defeat these bills in your state. If your state is grey, be thankful. That means your legislators haven’t bought the lie the government knows best for our children.

Thank you for standing with Family Policy Alliance to protect our children.

DAY 17: They Couldn’t Care Less

by Shawn Carney: Abortion is not safe. It is only considered successful if a baby dies.

But it is a myth to think abortion is safe for the mothers. Thus far in this 40 Days for Life campaign, we know of nine ambulance calls to abortion facilities.

In one instance, a woman who’d left an abortion facility passed out while she was waiting for a bus. It was the 40 Days for Life vigil participants who called for help … not the abortion center.

When the abortion staff saw what was going on, they got angry and said they’d take over … and that the woman didn’t need an ambulance. Thank God for the volunteers! The staff couldn’t care less.

The ambulances seldom have their sirens or lights flashing and they are often asked to enter though the back of the abortion facility. The abortion centers don’t want anyone to know there’s been a problem.

“More interested in their reputation, so it seems, than the well-being of the women who visit them,” said the local 40 Days for Life leader.

Abortion is safe? Never.

Feminists Angry That Abortion is Not Considered a Human Right

It would seem the killing unborn children in abortion would be the ultimate denial of human rights.

But feminists around the world think that abortion should be considered a human right. They are not content to legalize abortion, they want abortion to be considered a fundamental human right so any sort of denial of abortion is a denial of a human right that governments can’t tolerate. That allows the pro-abortion movement to force pro-life medical workers to do abortions refer for them and it allows them to force taxpayers to fund abortions, for example. It also allows governmental bodies like the UN to push pro-life nations to legalize abortion.

For years, feminists have been attempting to get the United Nations to make abortion human right. They have failed and they are failing once again much to their chagrin. . . . Read More

Iowa Senate Passes Bill to Ban All Abortions After an Unborn Baby’s Heartbeat Begins

The Iowa Senate passed a bill Wednesday to prohibit abortions after an unborn baby has a detectable heartbeat.

The vote puts the controversial legislation one step closer to becoming law and setting up the state for a potential legal battle that challenges Roe v. Wade.

The bill would require abortion practitioners to test for the unborn baby’s heartbeat before performing an abortion. If a heartbeat is detected, the abortion would be prohibited except in the case of a medical emergency. Violators would be charged with a Class D felony, and liable for up to five years in prison. Pro-life lawmakers introduced a similar bill in the state House in January.

Because an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable by about six weeks of pregnancy, the bill would prohibit almost all abortions in Iowa. Abortion activists say it is unconstitutional.

The Sioux City Journal reports the legislation appears likely to pass the state House as well.

Pro-life state Sen. Amy Sinclair said the bill strikes “at the very heart and soul of what it means to be an American, what it means to be a person.” . . . Read More

Indiana House Passes Bill Making It Harder to Open New Abortion Clinics

The Indiana House today approved by a 67-26 vote a multi-faceted bill requiring the reporting of abortion complications that injure women while creating tougher requirements for abortion businesses applying for licensing in Indiana. The bill also sets the stage for expansion of safe haven baby boxes at fire stations in Indiana to help save newborn babies at risk of abandonment.

Senate Bill 340 requires that physicians, hospitals or abortion clinics must report to the state each case when a woman is injured by an abortion. Complications required to be reported include uterine perforation, cervical perforation, infection, hemorrhaging, respiratory arrest, shock, or incidents in which parts of an aborted baby are left within the woman. The report must also include any indication that the woman treated was seeking an abortion as a result of abuse, coercion, harassment or trafficking.

The bill also tightens the process for abortion licensing in Indiana by requiring that applicants disclose whether it has operated an abortion clinic that was closed due to health and safety concerns, whether a principal or staff members has been convicted of a felony, and whether a principal or staff member was ever employed by a facility owned or operated by the applicant that closed as a result of administrative or legal action.

In addition, the bill provides conditions under which safe haven baby boxes can be expanded at Indiana fire departments, including volunteer fire departments, that are staffed by an emergency medical services provider. . . . Read More

Billy Graham Dead At 99

. . . Famed evangelist preached to more than 2.2 billion

Billy Graham
by Art Moore: Billy Graham, America’s best-known evangelist and a spiritual adviser to 11 presidents who preached to more than 2.2 billion souls in more than seven decades of ministry, died Wednesday at the age of 99.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said he died at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, from “natural causes.”

Born Nov. 7, 1918, on a dairy farm near Charlotte, North Carolina, William Franklin Graham Jr. became a believer in Jesus Christ at the age of 16 during a series of revival meetings and went on to lead hundreds of evangelistic “crusades” in which he famously invited members of vast stadium and arena audiences to “come forward and accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior.”

“My one purpose in life is to help people find a personal relationship with God, which, I believe, comes through knowing Christ,” Graham once said.

He counted it a privilege to preach the Gospel “on every continent in most of the countries of the world.”

“I have found that when I present the simple message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with authority and simplicity, quoting the Word of God, He takes that message and drives it supernaturally into the human heart.”

Graham knew from personal experience the “human heart is the same the world over.”

“Only Christ can meet the deepest needs of our world and our hearts,” he declared. ‘Christ alone can bring lasting peace – peace with God, peace among men and nations.”

‘Jesus coming soon’ -  On the day of his 95th birthday, Nov. 7, 2013 – celebrated by about 900 people at a hotel in Asheville, North Carolina – Graham released a 30-minute video message broadcast on the Fox News Channel, on other networks and on the Internet titled “The Cross” as part of an outreach called “My Hope America with Billy Graham.” Graham summarized his aim: “With all my heart I want to leave you with the truth that He loves you and wants to forgive you of your sins.”

Graham told WND in an exclusive interview in 2013 he still believed people need to repent of their sins, turn to God and “take the narrow road that Jesus talks about in the Bible.”

He told WND he believed the signs of the end of the age are “converging now for the first time since Jesus made those predictions.”

In his 2013 book “The Reason for My Hope: Salvation,” Graham wrote the second coming of Jesus Christ is “near” and the United States “can’t go on much longer in the sea of immorality without judgment coming.”

“We have been going down the wrong road for a long time,” Graham told WND. “Seemingly, man has learned to live without God, preoccupied and indifferent toward him and concerned only about material security and pleasure.

Family legacy -  His wife, Ruth, born in China to missionary parents, died in June 2007 at age 87 after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by their five children, Virginia Leftwich “Gigi” Graham Tchividjian, Anne Graham Lotz, Ruth Graham, William Franklin Graham III and Nelson “Ned” Graham. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and more than 28 great-grandchildren, including grandson Tullian Tchividjian, who succeeded Rev. D. James Kennedy as senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

His oldest son, Franklin Graham, succeeded him as president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 2000. Franklin Graham also directs the major international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse.

When his wife died at their mountaintop home in Montreat, North Carolina, near Asheville, Graham stated he and his “life partner” had been “called by God as a team.”

“No one else could have borne the load that she carried,” he said. “She was a vital and integral part of our ministry, and my work through the years would have been impossible without her encouragement and support.”

Graham said that in their final years together they “rekindled the romance of our youth, and my love for her continued to grow deeper every day.”

“I will miss her terribly and look forward even more to the day I can join her in Heaven,” he said.

The couple met as students at the evangelical liberal arts school Wheaton College, near Chicago. Graham said that when their eyes first met as he came across her walking down a road, “I felt that she was definitely the woman I wanted to marry.”

Hour of decision -  One of America’s most recognizable figures, Graham was listed as No. 8 on Gallup’s list of the most admired people of the 20th century. According to his staff, he preached the Gospel to live audiences of an estimated 215 million in more than 185 countries and territories. In addition – through the use of television, video, film and webcasts – he spoke to a combined audience of more than 2.2 billion.

His weekly radio program, “Hour of Decision,” was broadcast for more than 50 years, and his city Gospel events were seen in prime time on television.

Along with his syndicated newspaper column, “My Answer,” and monthly Billy Graham Evangelistic Association magazine, Decision, Graham was the co-founder of the leading evangelical magazine Christianity Today in 1956.

Graham also launched World Wide Pictures, producer and distributor of more than 130 films.

He wrote 27 books, which included numerous best-sellers. Among them were his memoir, “Just As I Am,” released in 1997. His 1983 book “Approaching Hoofbeats: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” was on the New York Times best-seller list several weeks. In 1977, “How to Be Born Again” was released with the largest first printing in history, more than 800,000 copies. The book followed “Angel’s God’s Secret,” which sold more than 1 million copies in 90 days.

Graham came to faith in 1934 when he was persuaded by an employee of the family farm to attend a series of revival meetings in Charlotte led by evangelist Mordecai Ham.

After high school, Graham entered Bob Jones College – now Bob Jones University – which then was located in Cleveland, Tennessee. The young student was nearly expelled, however, and dropped out after only one semester, because he thought the school was too legalistic.

The school’s founder, Bob Jones Sr., famously told Graham: “At best, all you could amount to would be a poor country Baptist preacher somewhere out in the sticks.”

But Jones said: “You have a voice that pulls. God can use that voice of yours. He can use it mightily.”

Graham transferred to the Florida Bible Institute – now Trinity College of Florida – in Temple Terrace, Florida. Graham said in his book “Just As I Am” he “received [his] calling on the 18th green of the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club.” He graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree.

He then attended Wheaton College, where he graduated in 1943 with a degree in anthropology. Graham said that during his time at Wheaton he came to believe the Bible was the infallible word of God, citing Henrietta Mears of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California, as a key influence.

Graham served as pastor of Village Church in Western Springs, Illinois, near Wheaton, from 1943 to 1944. During that time he succeeded his friend, well-known pastor Torrey Johnson of Midwest Bible Church in Chicago, as host of the radio program “Songs in the Night.” He recruited singer George Beverly Shea for the program, who later became a fixture in his Gospel crusades.

In 1947, Graham became the youngest person to serve as a college president when he took the helm of Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota, at age 30.

Later, he became a traveling evangelist with the newly founded evangelical group Youth for Christ International, co-founded by Torrey Johnson and evangelist Charles Templeton.

He rose to national prominence in 1949 as the lead evangelist in a series of circus-tent revival meetings in Los Angeles that drew the interest of legendary news mogul William Randolph Hearst, who famously sent a telegram to his news editors with the instruction: “Puff Graham.”

With increased exposure, the revival meetings originally scheduled for three weeks, ran eight weeks, and Graham soon became a household name.

President Ronald Reagan & Nancy Reagan
greet Billy Graham at the National Prayer
Breakfast in Washington in 1981
America’s pastor  -  Graham, a registered Democrat, developed influential relationships with 11 presidents, from Harry Truman to George W. Bush, but was careful not to endorse any candidate.

In 2012, however, Graham broke from form and endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president. In full page ads and a dedicated website, his “vote biblical values” campaign urged voters to support candidates who oppose abortion and back traditional marriage.

The campaign didn’t mention candidates by name, but Graham met with Romney and pledged he would “do all I can to help you.”

He met briefly with President Obama at Graham’s home, April 25, 2010, and prayed with him.

“Like others before him, President Obama shared how lonely, demanding and humbling the office of president can be, and how much he appreciated the counsel of people like Mr. Graham and the prayers of so many citizens,” said Graham spokesman Larry Ross.

Graham presented Obama with two Bibles, one for him and the other for first lady Michelle Obama, according to Ross.

Graham “concluded with a prayer for the president, his family and his administration.”

In November 2009, Ross disclosed the two men spoke for the first time when Obama called Graham from Air Force One to offer good wishes on the evangelist’s 91st birthday.

Graham shared Scripture verses with the president, Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Graham told Obama “he would continue to be in prayer for him,” Ross reported.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her family dined with Graham at his home that month. Franklin Graham told reporters his father had followed her career and “liked her strong stand on faith.”

“Daddy feels God was using her to wake America up,” the younger Graham said.

During the two-and-a-half hour visit, Palin told Billy Graham how she became a Christian as a girl at a Bible camp, and she quizzed him on the presidents he knew.

She also asked him what he believed the Bible says about Israel, Iran and Iraq.

Graham described Ronald Reagan as the president to whom he was closest.

A close friend of the Bush family, Graham prayed with George H.W. Bush as the first bombs of Desert Storm fell on Baghdad in 1991.

The elder Bush told ABC’s Charlie Gibson during a 2007 interview at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine, that Graham also helped him address questions about the afterlife.

“I don’t think the president is any different than anybody else when it comes to wonder,” Bush said. “Especially as you get older. … I find myself thinking about it more and more: What’s it going to be like?”

The senior Bush invited Graham to hold a series of Bible studies at the family home.

George W. Bush recalls that at a time when he was a cynic and a heavy drinker with many questions about faith, Graham had an “enormous influence” on his life.

Regarding religion, Bush described himself as a person who would “listen but never hear.”

“Billy Graham helped me understand the redemptive power of a risen Lord,” he said in a Fox News Channel interview.

Graham also developed a friendship with Bill Clinton.

Clinton recalled attending a Graham crusade in Little Rock, Arkansas, when he was 13 and becoming so moved he sent a portion of his allowance to Graham’s ministry for years afterward.

Rough start

Graham’s spiritual counsel to presidents didn’t begin well, however. In 1950, decked out in a pastel suit and white buck shoes, he prayed with President Truman, then reenacted the prayer to the press, kneeling on the White House lawn. An angry Truman, a fellow Southern Baptist, called Graham a “counterfeit” publicity seeker and refused to speak to him for many years.

Graham later apologized and retold the story to emphasize his commitment to not reveal details of his conversations with world leaders.

Graham was particularly active in Richard Nixon’s White House, regularly advising the president and leading private church services there. Graham turned down an offer from Nixon to become ambassador to Israel. After Nixon’s role in Watergate emerged through White House tapes, which captured his profane speech, Graham expressed profound disappointment.

He wrote of Nixon in 1997, “Looking back these forty-five years later, considering all that has intervened, I wonder whether I might have exaggerated his spirituality in my own mind.”

Later, Nixon’s tapes inflicted damage on Graham when segments declassified and released in 2002 captured the evangelist apparently agreeing with Nixon that Jews had a “stranglehold” on the American media. Graham issued a statement of apology amid criticism from Jewish and fellow evangelical leaders.

“Although I have no memory of the occasion, I deeply regret comments I apparently made,” said Graham, a long-time supporter of Israel. “They do not reflect my views, and I sincerely apologize for any offense caused by the remarks.”

Graham admitted, “I guess I was trying to please” and noted he went to a meeting with Jewish leaders and, “I told them I would crawl to them to ask their forgiveness.”

In 1979, when Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority gathered strength, Graham refused to join.

“I’m for morality, but morality goes beyond sex to human freedom and social justice,” he explained. “We as clergy know so very little to speak with authority on the Panama Canal or superiority of armaments. Evangelists cannot be closely identified with any particular party or person. We have to stand in the middle in order to preach to all people, right and left. I haven’t been faithful to my own advice in the past. I will be in the future.”

But he regularly was called on at times of national mourning, leading prayer, for example, at national services following the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

After holding what he called his last crusade, in New York City, Graham and son Franklin held a “Festival of Hope” in New Orleans in March 2006 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

‘Give him power and authority’ -  Graham developed a close friendship with Martin Luther King Jr., who credited him with helping reduce tensions between blacks and whites in the South.

“Had it not been for the ministry of my good friend Dr. Billy Graham, my work in the civil rights movement would not have been as successful as it has been,” King said.

Graham’s decision in 1952, in the face of fierce criticism, to stop holding segregated crusades had a profound influence.

In 1957, King opened in prayer at one of Graham’s services in New York City and came to a meeting of Graham’s team to, in the words of the evangelist, “help us understand the racial situation in America more fully.”

King prayed at Madison Square Garden, where 2.3 million attended over 16 weeks: “We thank Thee this evening for the marvelous things that have been done in this city, and through the dynamic preaching of this great evangelist. We ask Thee, oh God, to continue blessing him. Give him power and authority. And as we look into him tonight, grant that our hearts and spirit will be open to the divine inflow.”

In 1965, amid heightened racial tensions in the South, Graham canceled a tour of Europe to preach in Alabama, regarding his ministry as an effort to work with King to break down racial barriers.

In his autobiography, Graham recalled the moment he heard of King’s assassination in 1968.

“I was almost in a state of shock. Not only was I losing a friend through a vicious and senseless killing, but America was losing a social leader and a prophet, and I felt his death would be one of the greatest tragedies in our history.”

Graham said he couldn’t “point to any single event or intellectual crisis that changed my mind on racial equality.”

“At Wheaton College, I made friends with black students, and I recall vividly one of them coming to my room one day and talking with deep conviction about America’s need for racial justice.”

The greatest influence, he said, was his study of the Bible, “leading me eventually to the conclusion that not only was racial inequality wrong but Christians especially should demonstrate love toward all peoples.”

Spreading the Gospel -  Graham drew praise as well as strong criticism for his de-emphasis of theological and political differences, explaining his primary aim was to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ as widely as possible.

Forays to countries that repressed Christianity drew censure from many fellow evangelicals.

When he began his ministry, he called communists “Satan worshippers,” but in May 1982 he went to Moscow to discuss peace and nuclear disarmament at a conference run by the state-controlled church.

Graham told reporters he found more religious freedom than he expected and was surprised at the warmth of his welcome.

Despite the communist nation’s documented, systematic persecution of Christians in the underground church, Graham emphasized “there are millions of people in the Soviet Union that go to church on Sunday and practice their religious faith.”

“I’m not an expert. … I learned that there are two sides to all these questions,” he said.

Meanwhile, demonstrators outside the Billy Graham Center at his alma mater, Wheaton College, carried signs reading “Billy Graham has been duped by the Soviets” and “Russian Baptists tortured as Graham praises the torturers.”

Later, Graham issued a statement saying there had been “apparent distortion and actual misquotes” about what he had said at the conference.

“Freedom is relative,” his statement said in part. “I don’t have freedom in the United States to go into a public school and preach the Gospel, nor is a student free in a public school to pray, or a teacher free to read the Bible publicly to the students. At the same time, we have a great degree of freedom for which I am grateful.”

Hope for the world -  In a rare television interview late in his life, Dec. 22, 2010, the Fox News Channel’s Greta van Sustern asked Graham, “At age 92, do you have hope for the world, for the nation?”

“I have a tremendous amount of hope,” Graham replied, his once smooth, booming voice now measured and gravelly. “I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead, and I believe he’s alive right now.

“My wife is already in heaven,” he continued. “I look forward to seeing her in Heaven, definitely, because I’m 92 now, and I know that my time is limited on this earth.

“But I have tremendous hope in the fact I’ll be in the future life, and I’ll be there because of what Jesus Christ did for me on the cross and by the resurrection.”
