Chinese Forced Abortion Opponent Escapes - May Be At US Embassy

Chen Guangcheng
Life News -- Forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng, a blind attorney, escaped house arrest — where brutal family planning officials had confined him for years after he exposed a massive campaign of forced abortions and sterilizations.

Since the daring rescue that apparently has allowed him to escape to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, news on Chen’s status and location have been hard to come by today.

The rescue comes ahead of a visit to China next week by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the fact that Chen is currently at the Embassy could make the visit more tenuous or it could provide political cover for the United States to provide him asylum or other diplomatic assistance.

Bob Fu, president of the U.S.-based Christian human-rights group ChinaAid, who originally reported the details of Chen’s escape earlier today, told the Wall St. Journal Chen is now in Beijing in a “100% safe location.” He said ChinaAid acted as a “facilitator” in the escape and briefed the U.S. government and diplomats on what happened.

“I can’t say more as there might be some diplomatic issues,” he said, but added, “If you ask any Chinese person where the safest place in Beijing is, they’ll all think the same thing. Even Wang Lijun had a similar idea.”

Neither the White House nor State Department would confirm that the U.S. was protecting Chen in Beijing, the Journal reported. However, if he is currently enjoying protection from the United States, the Obama administration will be hard-pressed to not continue protecting him as Chen would undoubtedly face potential harm, including death, if the United States refuses to continue the protection and Chinese officials unlawfully detain him.

The widely reported escape of well-known blind Chinese human rights defender Chen Guangcheng from illegal home confinement is being closely followed by members of Congress, including pro-life Congressman Chris Smith.

“I’m relieved to hear the reported news of human rights advocate Chen Guangcheng’s escape from extended illegal home confinement,” he said. ““I hope that he is safe as his supporters have indicated.” . . [Read More]

Ohio House Considers Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

Ohio House of Representatives adopted an amendment to cut funding from abortion businesses such as Planned Parenthood, the largest in the U.S. that does more than 25 percent of all abortions. . . .

Officials with the state’s leading pro-life group say the bill is needed to ensure taxpayer dollars support legitimate medical and reproductive care for women without funding an abortion company.

“Ohio’s abortion industry will no longer feed at the taxpayer trough. Instead, these dedicated health care funds will be offered to those entities where a vast majority of low-income women and their children seek responsible and life-saving services,” said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. “With approximately 290 different options available for need-based health care, it is vital for the General Assembly to advance this measure to ensure women have access to health care.”

Gonidakis said the new legislative approach will ensure that tax dollars allocated to health programs for uninsured and underinsured women will continue. The initiative promotes women’s health by restructuring how our tax dollars are distributed, giving priority to those health centers where a majority of Ohio women receive care.

“This is not about taking access to health care away from women,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, Legislative Director at Ohio Right to Life. “This is about opposing funding of the abortion industry. If we want to talk about choice, this gives women more choices about the way they receive health care.”

In February, Ohio Right to Life and pro-life advocates from Texas Right to Life and the Susan B. Anthony List testified in support of the bill. . . . Read More

Cardinal Burke Expels the Demon of Doubt

By Judie Brown, Pro Life Today Speaking powerful words of clarity, Cardinal Raymond Burke explains why Obama's mandate regarding mandatory coverage for birth control cannot be accepted, endorsed, or followed by members of the Catholic Church. Today's commentary addresses this and explains what we can do to make our voices heard as well.

. . . Time will tell whether or not Catholic employers must choose between truth and government intrusion. In the meantime, we can be prepared by educating ourselves, we can be grateful for Cardinal Burke’s clear guidance in this matter, and we can pray to God for the victory we seek.

The demon of doubt no longer stands in our way.

FRC: Sweepless in Seattle

Tony Perkins, Family Research Council: Imagine a stranger knocking on the door and handing you a receipt. She's decided to abort her baby and wants you to pay for it. Under the President's policy, refusal is not an option. If you're enrolled in a health care plan that includes abortion--you'll be paying for the procedure whether you want to or not. How can it be "pro-choice" when there is no choice for people who object? Good question. One that more leaders are starting to ask. In the last few months, several states have rushed legislation to the floor to stop the administration's abortion premium from coming to their borders. At least 15 of them have passed (and another 12 have introduced) bills that protect insurance companies that don't want to offer abortion coverage from being required to.

Washington State, on the other hand, was headed in the opposite direction. There, the House pushed a measure, which, like the federal government's new rules, would have ordered insurance plans to pick up the tab for abortions. U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) was one of the bill's many opponents. In a letter to President Obama, she warned that the policy had "far reaching and alarming consequences" for the "unborn lives of the next generation." "The state of Washington," she wrote, "or any state... that receives federal funds is prohibited from mandating that insurance plans cover abortion..."

After squeaking through the Washington House 52-46, the debate shifted to Olympia's state senate, where leaders felt pressure from pro-life voters to kill the bill. This week, they managed to do exactly that. After a long and drawn out budget battle, the state senate abruptly adjourned--but not before Republicans and three Democrats blocked the bill from hitting the floor. For the President, almost three thousand miles away, the defeat should sting. Even in a Left of center state, voters reject his abortion-as-health-care mentality. In a predominately liberal state like Washington, one of the four that legalized abortion before Roe v. Wade, the President's policy should have been a slam dunk. But John Geis, who, along with the rest of the Family Policy Institute of Washington, helped dash the Left's agenda, said that people understood what was at stake . "It violates the constitutional rights of citizens to freely practice their religion and their freedom of conscience."

National Right To Life & Susan B. Anthony List Endorse Gov Mitt Romney for President

Right-to-Life Movement Focused on Defeating Barack Obama in November
On Thursday, two of the largest pro-life organizations endorsed former Massachusetts Govern Mitt Romney for President. There individual endorsement statements below were obtained from the ARRA News Service.

Determined to secure a pro-life victory in the November election, which will decide the fate of unborn children for decades to come, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, and the Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List, a nationwide network of more than 365,000 Americans dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics, endorsed Mitt Romney for President of the United States.

Governor Mitt Romney has pledged to defund Planned Parenthood, restore the Mexico City Policy, support legislation to ban abortions based on fetal pain, and appoint only constitutionalists judges to the federal bench. Governor Romney has also committed to selecting a pro-life vice president.

The Susan B. Anthony List endorsement:
“Now is the time to unite behind Governor Romney in order to defeat the most ideologically pro-abortion president in our nation’s history,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA List. “The SBA List is proud to endorse Governor Romney and plans to spend $10 to $12 million in senate and presidential battleground states mobilizing pro-life voters to ensure victory.”

“Women deserve a president who truly respects our views on an issue so central to womanhood,” continued Dannenfelser. “A President Romney will be that man. If there was murkiness during the last election over Barack Obama's extreme abortion position, absolute clarity exists now – and his abortion position is rejected by women young and old.”

"The difference between Governor Romney and President Obama couldn’t be clearer, which is why our Board of Directors voted unanimously to get behind him," said Jane Abraham, Chairman of the SBA List Board of Directors. “It is the responsibility of all pro-life voters to now unite behind Governor Romney. Together we can put a pro-life leader in the White House.”
National Right to Life Committee (NRLC)
“On pro-life issues, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama provide a stark contrast. As the country's most pro-abortion president, Barack Obama has pursued a radical pro-abortion agenda,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “It is now time for pro-life Americans to unite behind Mitt Romney. For the sake of unborn children, the disabled, and the elderly, we must win.”

Mitt Romney has taken a strong pro-life position and is committed to implementing policies to protect the unborn, the medically dependent and disabled, and the elderly. Romney opposes abortion and has called the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, "a big mistake." Romney has expressed his support of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortion.

Romney has also stated he believes the Obama health care law should be repealed. The Obama health care law would open the door to federal subsidies for abortion coverage and rationing of lifesaving medical care. He has also stated that, if elected, he would reinstate the Mexico City Policy, which prevents federal dollars from going to organizations that perform or promote abortion overseas.

In comparison, since taking office in January 2009, President Obama has been an outspoken advocate for abortion and has unceasingly worked to expand funding of and access to abortion. He rescinded the Mexico City Policy, threatened to veto the entire federal spending bill – forcing a government shutdown – rather than accept a provision cutting funding to Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider. Obama also threatened to veto the Protect Life Act, which would repeal the abortion-expanding provisions of his health care law, and the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would permanently prohibit any federal program from funding elective abortion.

Additionally, President Obama championed the so-called Affordable Care Act while opposing pro-life amendments in the Senate. As enacted, the law will result in federal funding of health plans that pay for elective abortion, and will lead to large-scale rationing of lifesaving medical treatments.

“We are extremely gratified that every candidate who has run for the Republican nomination for president took a pro-life position and kept the life issues at the forefront of the race,”Tobias added. “We look forward to Mitt Romney's election as our next pro-life president on November 6th.”

California Considers Allowing Non-Physicians to Perform Abortions

California Considers Allowing Non-Physicians to Perform Abortions

by Karla Dial, CitizenLink

On Monday, a California Senate committee will vote on a bill seeking to allow midwives, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to perform abortions — and life advocates say this weekend is the best window of opportunity to stifle the effort.

SB 1338, sponsored by Sen. Christine Kehoe of San Diego, will be coming up for a vote at 1:30 p.m. PDT in the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.

California is "the first state that we know of that's ever looking at rescinding and actually decreasing the standard of care that women would be getting if they go into an abortion clinic," said Daniel McConchie, vice president of government affairs at Americans United for Life.

Planned Parenthood Sues to Stop Texas from Enforcing Law

Planned Parenthood Sues to Stop Texas from Enforcing Law

by Karla Dial, CitizenLink, Focus on the Family

Planned Parenthood filed a federal lawsuit against Texas today, seeking to block it from enforcing a new law that bans taxpayer funds from going to groups that perform abortions or their affiliates.

According to the suit, if the law is enforced it "could deprive tens of thousands of low-income women seeking family planning and other preventive health services."

State legislators passed the law in the 2011 session, seeking to completely oust the abortion seller from the state Medicaid program. Despite threats from the Obama administration, the state implemented the law in February.

The Obama administration made good on its threat in March, shutting off the spigot of federal Medicaid funds to the Texas program; that block of $30 milllion makes up 90 percent of the state Medicaid budget. The federal government contends that Medicaid recipients must be able to choose their own “qualified” providers from those willing to offer services, a list which includes Planned Parenthood — and that excluding the group makes the Lone Star State’s law unconstitutional.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, however, has not been cowed: He’s leading the charge for the state, filing a countersuit against the Obama administration last month for cutting off federal funding over the issue. . . .

Constitutionally, Saenz said, the 10th Amendment, protecting states’ rights in matters not specifically granted to the federal government, lets Texas have the final word.

“What it boils down to is another ‘Washington versus Texas’ issue,” he said. “Obviously, the Obama administration is supporting Planned Parenthood and wanting their side to prevail. (But) Washington and Planned Parenthood need to butt out.”

Alabama Abortion Clinic Operators Must Surrender License

by Karla Dial, CitizenLink: The Alabama Department of Health (ADPH) on Friday ordered the operators of a Birmingham abortion clinic to surrender their license by May 18.

In late January, life advocates photographed two women being carried out of the New Woman All Women Health Care clinic into an alley, where ambulances were waiting. The incident sparked an investigation from the ADPH, which resulted in a 76-page report detailing nine categories of health code violations. The clinic has a history of bad reports from ADPH dating back as far as 2003.

“Non-licensed employees were administering medications to patients,” said Father Terry Gensemer of the Charismatic Episcopal Church (CEC) for Life. There were also “charges of false and inaccurate medical records (and) failure to follow up with patients that were experiencing complications after the abortion procedures.

According to the ADPH, the two women photographed being carried out of the clinic in January had been given overdoses of Vasopressin, a drug used to treat low blood pressure after a hemorrhage — ten times the amount they were supposed to have received.

Though clinic owner Diane Derzis described the women as “groggy” in her 911 call, the situation was upgraded to a more serious status after paramedics arrived on the scene, according to CEC for Life; one of the women was later transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Derzis owns abortion clinics in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.
According to the ADPH investigation, conducted between Feb. 2 and March 1, the clinic:
•           failed to properly train staff members to provide patient care.
•           failed to document abortionists’ qualifications.
•           kept shoddy, illegible and sometimes falsified patient records.
•           failed to properly document types and amounts of medications given to patients.
•           inaccurately prepared and administered pain-management drugs, resulting in over- or underdoses.
•           failed to keep equipment inspections up to date, and
•           failed to return patient calls, document correct dates on reports, or notify the physician of patient problems.

The clinic has been a controversial site for a long time: Last January, life advocates who had gathered in front of it to pray and counsel women on the sidewalk won a lawsuit that sought to have them permanently banned.

“Had we not stopped the police from illegally arresting pro-life advocates, who else could have reported to the authorities that in one day, (multiple) women were taken from this abortion clinic to a hospital for emergency medical treatment?” said Dana Cody, executive director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation. “Their ability to bear witness outside this Birmingham abortion clinic helped to shed light on a very dark and deadly place that needed to be closed.”

Read the Alabama Department of Public Health’s deficiency report on the clinic.
Listen to the 911 calls from NWAW owner Diane Derzis.

Media Bias: Fairness found lacking in NPR story on Pro-life Group

By Valerie Richardson at the The Washington Times: Pro-life groups often insist that they don’t get a fair shake in the media, and now the Vitae Foundation has confirmation.

Both the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Washington News Council have sided with the foundation in its fairness complaint against Seattle's National Public Radio station, KUOW-FM, which ran a story about the organization without trying to contact it.

The 11-member Washington News Council ruled Saturday that KUOW-FM should have contacted Vitae before airing the one-sided story on the foundation’s placement of billboards advertising pro-life pregnancy options in the Seattle area. . . .

On Wednesday, Corporation for Public Broadcasting ombudsman Joel Kaplan agreed, releasing a statement detailing his accord with the Washington council, which ruled in Vitae’s favor on five of six issues related to the complaint.

“Clearly, KUOW should have attempted to contact the Vitae Foundation before running the story, an act that its reporter readily acknowledges,” Mr. Kaplan said in a statement. “And once it was pointed out that abortion services is listed on its website, that part of the story should have been corrected.” . . .

“At the end of the day, this is not about which side of the abortion debate one happens to stand on, but about the accountability of news outlets that is absolutely essential in a free and democratic society,” Ms. de Solenni said.

The Vitae Foundation, based in Jefferson City, Mo., offers media services for pro-life groups. . . . [Full Story]

Scaring the Horses: Britain’s Tories Back Unmarriage

Bob Morrison & Ken Blackwell
by Ken Blackwell and Bob Morrison, Guest Article: Britain’s Conservative Party, the Tories, lost an empire when America rebelled against their tyranny and foolishness. Edmund Burke said then: “Great empires and little minds go ill together.” Now, the Tories are preparing to lose Britain itself.

How so? The Tories are ending marriage. Of course, that’s not what they think they are doing. They think they are simply acknowledging that Sir Elton and his significant other are as “married” as any other British couple. It used to be said of the Britons with their stiff upper lips that they don’t care what you do so long as you don’t scare the horses. But the Tories bid to end marriage should scare all of Britain—horse, foot, and dragoons.

Why does this move end marriage? Marriage foes say they only want to make us recognize the coupling of two men or two women as the legal equivalent, for example, of the marriage of Will & Kate. Hollywood’s original blonde bombshell, Mae West, knew better. She said: “Marriage is a great institution; I’m just not ready for an institution.” Yesterday’s fading starlets from Tinseltown had a better understanding of marriage than do today’s Prime Ministers and prelates.

The Tories are counterfeiting the institution of marriage. They are creating unmarriage and saying it is the same as true marriage. Our opponents in this cultural clash say we should not call it “gay marriage.” For once, we agree. They prefer their term “marriage equality.” But this will be a true statement only when 0=1.

Voters instinctively understand what the powers that be do not. You cannot counterfeit marriage without grave harm to society. In state after state in America, voters give thumbs up to marriage and vote down counterfeit marriage. Even liberal states like Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Wisconsin say YES to marriage. In every debate, marriage foes make us the NO party. Social conservatives are forced to say NO to their counterfeiting.

But we are the YES party. We are the I DO people. We understand that when everyone can marry, no one can marry. There is simply no marriage left.

The U.S. Secret Service was founded not to protect presidents, but to stop counterfeiters. Since there are innumerable ways to counterfeit money, agents are not taught to spot them all. Instead, they are taught to recognize real money.

Counterfeiting marriage works like counterfeiting money. What will be the value of the twenty-dollar bill in your wallet if your neighbor is allowed to print them in his garage?

Edmund Burke was no Tory in Parliament. That great Irish statesman described families as “those little platoons in which we move” in society. Those little platoons are being shelled daily by the Hollywood subculture. Legal recognition of same-sex couplings is one of most unreal products of Hollywood’s dream factories.

We love the creativity of Hollywood’s imagineers, but taking counsel on marriage from Hollywood is like having Bill Clinton counsel teens on abstinence. (What’s that you say? President Clinton did lecture teens on abstinence? Well, you take the point.)

It’s a grave mistake to treat marriage as some “wedge issue.” Even our friends sometimes make that mistake. Marriage is a bridge issue. It brings together Americans of all races, creeds, and ethnicity. Marriage is the bedrock of society. It is the “unit cohesion” of those little platoons that Burke spoke of so eloquently.

Bruno Bettelheim was one of the leading child psychologists of the last century. He came here from Austria just as Hitler was fastening his iron grip on that wretched country. Bettelheim never lost the heavy accent that came to be synonymous with Viennese psychiatry. Bettelheim famously said: “Zumbuddy must be cr-r-razy about ze child.

Social conservatives can offer convincing proofs that that Zumbuddy is most likely to be the child’s own mother and father, joined in marriage. We also know that if that married family worships regularly, the outcomes for the child’s health, education, and welfare are even better.

Every day in America we see four in ten children born out of wedlock. We bless their mothers for choosing life. But social science findings are unambiguous. Children growing up without married parents are disadvantaged. They have lesser prospects in their pursuit of happiness.

The idea that two men or two women pairings can substitute for this natural family is illusory. To accept that idea we must agree to the proposition that fathers don’t matter. Or mothers don’t matter. We must agree with radical Gloria Steinem that “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”

Fish? Bicyles? Is this logic? Is this reason? Is this even sanity? Let’s step back from the brink. “There’ll always be an England” is a popular saying in Old Blighty. Will there? For the sake of those little platoons, and for the sake of great nations: Let’s defend true marriage. It has certain ring to it.
J. Ken Blackwell is a conservative family values advocate. Blackwell is a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission and is a senior fellow at the Family Research Council. Bob Morrison is a Senior Fellow for Policy Studies at the Family Research Council. He has served at the U.S. Department of Education with Gary Bauer under then-Secretary William Bennett. The article was provided by Blackwell to the Editor, Dr. Bill Smith for publication.
