DOJ Says One Man, One Woman Marriage is Unconstitutional

Take Action: DOJ Says One Man, One Woman Marriage is Unconstitutional
by Bethany Monk: The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court Friday arguing that a federal law defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman [DOMA] is one man and one woman is unconstitutional unconstitutional because it discriminates against homosexuals.

The DOJ is seeking to strike down the law that defines marriage for all federal purposes.

The department argues in the brief that the law is unconstitutional under “heightened constitutional scrutiny.” In other words, the DOJ is asserting that sexual orientation should be treated as a suspect classification, like race or sex. The usual test for laws not involving suspect classifications is the “rational basis” test, which is a much lower threshold for laws to meet. Marriage laws have uniformly been tested under a “rational basis” review in the past. Read More

A Thermonuclear Trumpet: Knocking Down the Jericho Wall of Abortion Apathy

jericho2by Rollie Haggard: The apostle Paul noted that “if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, no one will prepare himself to the battle.” His point: If what we're hearing doesn't soundto us like a clear call from God, even when it is, we're unlikely to mobilize.

History bears this out. It is precisely what happened with the transatlantic slave trade. One of the reasons it took so long to end that horrific business is that too few Christians believed that God wanted them to actively oppose it. The biblical message they heard on the issue was confused and indistinct, like a trumpet giving an uncertain sound. As a result there was no consensus, no united front, and slavery continued.
It wasn't that the message was not loud enough: Everyone heard the noise that was being made over slavery. It was that the message was not clear enough: The people of God were getting mixed signals and thus weren't sure what their responsibility was.
From abolitionists they heard biblical arguments against slavery. From some clergy, willing for different reasons to justify slavery, they heard other supposedly “biblical” arguments that either sanctioned slavery, or at the very least downplayed how important it was to God that it be abolished.
The result? The church did not rally to the battle, at least not in sufficient numbers. What the church ought to have done, and arguably could have done, peacefully, the state had to do by bloody civil war.

History Repeating Itself
What happened years ago with slavery is happening again today with abortion. Churchgoers are hearing conflicting messages, all supposedly “biblical,” and the result is distressingly the same: Indifference, inaction, and staggering loss of innocent human life as the horrid practice continues virtually unopposed.

Today's abolitionists are waging the war against abortion apathy with largely the same apologetic weapons employed in the fight against slavery. To be sure, we are using the latest and best scientific and sociological data available, which is good. And we are using Scripture to persuade our fellow Christians, which is also good—in fact necessary, because as someone has said, "abortion will end when the church wants it to end."

The problem is we are attempting to do it using Scripture in the same way our forebears used it, mostly through isolated proof-texts whose impact is relatively easy to blunt or deflect. If we want to expedite the end of the church's passive acceptance of a culture of death we must do more.

Relying on Proof-Texts
There are a number of reasons the church is not clear on how breathtakingly important the abortion issue is to God. One is that the word “abortion” doesn't appear in the Bible. Many sincere believers conclude from this that pro-life activism must be of marginal importance to God, else He would have spelled it out explicitly.

Seeking to be “biblical,” these believers define Christian duty in proportion to the number of proof-texts that can be amassed. Activities that are clearly “proof-textable,” such as evangelism and Bible teaching, come to be viewed as practically the sole mission of the church, while pro-life activism and other such “unproof-textable” causes are relegated to the bottom of the list as mere adjuncts to the church's mission.

Such reasoning is seriously flawed. Think about it: There are some things, even some of the most atrocious evils imaginable, against which no clear verse of Scripture may be mustered. Pedophilia and child abuse are among dozens of examples we could cite. Does that mean God doesn’t have the strongest conceivable abhorrence of such evils and that Christians should be passive on them? Hardly!

The fact is, there is much more to being biblical than having watertight proof-texts.

What it Means to be ‘Biblical’
As I noted in a previous BreakPoint piece, being “biblical” means being true to the spirit, not just the letter, of Scripture. Sometimes proof-texts convey readily only the letter. The Pharisees were infamous for keeping the letter but neglecting the “weightier things” — i.e., the spirit—of the law. To discern the spirit we must identify underlying principles: not just what the Scripture says, but what it means.

So just what is a principle? And how does it differ from a proof-text?

A principle is a fundamental truth that is valid at all times and in all places. It differs from a proof-text in that, whereas a proof-text is an explicit statement one can quote “chapter and verse,” a principle may or may not be quite so plainly stated. It may have to be inferred by sound deductive reasoning—a process the formulators of the Westminster Confession of Faith called “good and necessary consequence.”

Does that diminish its force? Not in the least. Echoing the Westminster Confession, Matthew Henry notes in his “Commentary” that “whatever is by just and necessary consequence deduced from Scripture may be depended upon with as much certainty as if it were contained in express words of Scripture.” Principles so derived from Scripture are every bit as “biblical” as proof-texts.

Principles also have this advantage over proof-texts: Whereas stand-alone proof-texts can be weakened by conflicting counter “proof-texts,” principles are so clearly demonstrable and sweeping that the occasional “contradictory” verse, no matter how seemingly plain, has little power to shake conviction in the bedrock truth enshrined in a principle.

Principles thus are sophisticated spiritual weaponry, “divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.” Like the arrow that miraculously found the chink in Ahab's armor, these heaven-guided missiles are able to penetrate the enemy's most impregnable defenses to “destroy speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God.”

Proof-texts, the warfare equivalent of catapults and cross-bows, have enabled us to breach many of Hell's gates over the ages. But for this particular enemy stronghold—church passivity on abortion—we need an atomic bomb. And we have it, right in our hands.

A Thermonuclear Trumpet
We have in our Bibles the most powerful pro-life apologetic imaginable, an anti-abortion principle whose intercontinental ballistic punch beggars the accumulated force of every proof-text that has ever been mustered. It is this:
God values each human life more than His own.How do we know this? Because it is the elemental principle, the fundamental message, the unequivocal import of the cross of Jesus: God loves us more than life. It is literally what God did in Christ: He literally loved us more than His own life. He showed us with His life's blood what the “so” in John 3:16's “God 'so' loved the world” means: We are more precious to Him than life.

The cross of Christ is the pro-life apologetic, par excellence. Because the cross is the centerpiece of Christianity, pro-life activism is not an adjunct to the church's mission; it is profoundly emblematic of the very essence of the church's mission.

Proof-texts will always give an uncertain sound because nowhere is there a verse that says, “people, from conception to natural death, are infinitely precious to God.” But the cross of Jesus thunders it—unmistakably, emphatically, deafeningly—like a nuclear blast.

If we sound this trumpet, the troops will rally and the gates of Hell will fall.

Stop Carhart

Students for Life of America: Late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart has botched another abortion, this time killing Jennifer Morbelli, a 29-year old kindergarten teacher, and her 33-week old preborn baby girl, Madison Leigh, on February 7, 2013. Amazingly, his office is still open for business and he continues to perform dangerous late-term abortions. Every day he continues to operate, he kills more and more preborn children and puts the lives of more and more women at risk.

Join us in asking the Maryland Board of Physicians to shut down Carhart’s late-term abortion mill by signing our citizens complaint.

Bringing the law to life: Life Legal Defense Foundation

By Anna Abbott, Celebrate Life: The Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF), based in Napa, California, is small but powerful in the battle for the culture of life. Pro-life leader Ron Maxson, along with attorneys John Streett and Steve Lopez, founded it in 1989 to assist Operation Rescue protesters arrested for blocking entrances to abortion facilities. LLDF's mission is "to give innocent and helpless human beings of any age, particularly unborn children, a trained and committed defense against the threat of death, and to support their advocates in the nation's courtrooms," using the law and education. The foundation describes itself as a "one-of-a-kind nonprofit known for taking individual cases that others will not touch, especially cases that combine free-speech rights with pro-life witness in public places."  [Read More]

Abortion is Crippling Honesty

By Judie Brown, American Life League: Cripple: Something flawed or imperfect

The most recent case of America’s denial that the preborn child is a person once again reminds us that, culturally, our ability to deal honestly with our fellow human beings is so twisted that it becomes hideous to those with eyes to see. When a New Jersey court ruled that a woman who had cocaine in her system was not guilty of abusing her preborn child, the major media—with the exception of Bill O’Reilly—yawned and moved on.

To his credit, O’Reilly, who has his own problems including at times calling the preborn child a “potential” human being, focused on the case in his “Are We Crazy” segment telling viewers, “If this isn’t neglect, nothing is! We are not a humane society in America, we treat babies like garbage!”Yes, and we see this as the expected result of 40 years of dehumanizing others. But frankly garbage is handled with more respect than human beings. We respect “mother earth.” We recycle to protect the environment and we process wet garbage to create compost that is then used for the farming of fruits and vegetables. But when we deal with inconvenient humans like preborn children, the disabled, or the dying, we disregard all manner of reverence for human life in favor of crass disdain.

Below are snippets from around the nation that exemplify what America is thinking when it comes to the value of a single human being’s life.

A few days ago, Canadian researchers “found a clear link between induced abortion and a much higher risk of subsequent pregnancies ending in preterm birth.” Not a single mention was reported anywhere in the United States other than pro-life news reporting services.

Recently, South Dakota lawmakers proposed a 72-hour waiting period between abortion counseling and the abortion being committed. Pro-abortion forces are screaming bloody murder. According to Alisha Sedor, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, “H.B. 1237, if passed, will severely limit access to abortion in South Dakota. . . . The measure could make it impossible for the state’s only comprehensive women’s health clinic to continue providing abortion services, effectively banning abortion in South Dakota.”

What? The proposed regulation is not affecting abortion; it is merely putting a time frame between the initial appointment and the surgery date. This is not a pro-life proposal; it is simply common practice when anyone is considering major surgery.

But wait! Abortion is a woman’s right, so all bets are off! To heck with the expectant mother’s health and mental well-being.

In another example of blatant disregard for human life, two weeks ago Jennifer Morbelli, a 29-year-old kindergarten teacher, died in a Shady Grove, Maryland, hospital as a result of a botched abortion. Morbelli was in her 33rd week of pregnancy and the infamous Leroy Carhart performed the act of killing her baby. Though not nationally reported, the truth is that “efforts by family and hospital staff to reach Carhart while Morbelli’s condition worsened were reportedly unsuccessful” and, according to Operation Rescue, may have contributed to her death.

Finally there’s Julie Burkhart, the woman hoping to open South Wind Women’s Center on the site where abortionist George Tiller’s late-term abortion mill existed. Burkhart recently told Mother Jones magazine, “Abortion is about motherhood.” She continued, “Women are thinking in a very responsible manner when choosing that [abortion]. . . . In truth these are very well thought out decisions women are making. They’re taking responsibility for their lives and the lives of their future families.”

Imagine it. Abortion kills babies, but we do not admit he is a baby. Abortion maims and kills expectant mothers, but we do not admit that abortion is bad for women. Those who profit from abortion claim without apology that abortion is somehow about better families. And through it all we snooze.

In America today, pregnancy is viewed through a skewed prism that has been fashioned according to personal desire, self-gratification, and discombobulated ideas about what family really means. We’ve gone down the path paved with birth control and arrived at a sorry destination where pregnancy is a disease, a preborn baby is a tumor, and the woman getting the abortion is the heroine.

It has been said that there is no honor among thieves, and I would add there is no honesty among the vast majority of Americans when the subject is pregnancy.

Abortion has crippled honesty.

Control Coverage Mandate A new national poll Rasmussen Reports conducted finds Americans oppose the Obama administration mandate requiring religious employers to pay for coverage for birth control (which also includes drugs that may cause early abortions). The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds 38 percent of likely voters think health insurance companies should be required by law to cover the morning after pill without co-payments or other charges to the patient. But 50 percent of Americans disagree and oppose this requirement while 13 percent are undecided. Read More

Pro-Abortion Rape Myth Debunked, 99% of Abortion Clinics Do Ultrasounds Abortion advocates in Virginia have come under heavy criticism for equating the ultrasound legislation there would allow women to see before an abortion to rape. Yet, while abortion backers say having an ultrasound is like getting raped, a 2003 study shows 99% of Planned Parenthood abortion facilities do them beforehand. Published in the medical journal Contraception in 2003, researchers with the pro-abortion group IPAS, the University of North Carolina, a consortium of Planned Parenthood clinics and the National Abortion Federation surveyed staff at 113 Planned Parenthood affiliates and independent abortion businesses between February and April 2000. Women Sues Colorado Planned Parenthood over Forced Abortion

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink: A woman filed a lawsuit earlier this month against Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and one of its abortionists. The lawsuit claims they forced her to undergo an abortion without anesthesia and then left part of her baby’s body inside her.

Ayanna Byer, 40, says she changed her mind about having an abortion after Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs informed her they could not give her the agreed-upon intravenous anesthesia. The lawsuit claims the abortionist performed the abortion anyway. Byer was then sent home, but ended up in an emergency room two days later.

“A woman’s life is more important than Planned Parenthood’s bottom line,” said Doug Romero, allied attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), representing the woman. “What Planned Parenthood did to Ayanna is beyond the pale. They clearly put her through extraordinary cruelty and jeopardized her life. Their actions were intolerable.”

According to the complaint, the abortionist turned on the vacuum machine and proceeded, telling her it was too late to stop. Byer says she was fully awake and felt the full pain of the abortion. She says she never received any anesthesia.

She says he sent her home with pain pills. According to the complaint, Byer had no idea that part of her baby’s body was still inside her.

Two days later, Byer had to seek emergency treatment at a hospital. The on-call emergency room doctor who assisted her said in a statement that Byer “was septic with high fever and elevated white count.” He said she required an “immediate high-risk surgery” to remove what was left in her body during the Planned Parenthood abortion.

“Because of her continued pain and heavy bleeding, I was concerned that the patient might have had an ectopic pregnancy,” or abnormal pregnancy, the doctor writes. “I called Planned Parenthood the following day to inquire about pathology results only to learn that no pathology is done to abortion patients. The doctor performing the abortion ‘looks’ at the tissue and makes a diagnosis.”

He calls this lack of care an “abandonment” of the patient.

“It is not acceptable to refer your patients to the Emergency Department and assume the on-call doctor will take care of any complications,” the ER doctor continues. “It is medically inappropriate for a physician to remove products of conception and not confirm diagnosis with pathology. I know of no physician or hospital that would allow removal of a specimen of this nature and assume the diagnosis was just by ‘looking at it.’”

Public money should not support Planned Parenthood.

“Is this the type of organization American taxpayers should be funding to the tune of $540 million per year?” said ADF Senior Counsel Michael Norton, a former U.S. attorney for the district of Colorado. Norton helped write an ADF report to the U.S. House of Representatives concerning claims of fraudulent use of taxpayer dollars by Planned Parenthood affiliates.

“American tax dollars should be used responsibly and for the common good,” Norton explained. “Planned Parenthood is irresponsible and only promotes its own self-interest. That was clearly seen most vividly in what they did to Ayanna.”

Four Wisconsin Planned Parenthoods to Shut Down

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink: Gov. Scott Walker signed a budget into law in 2011 that cut Planned Parenthood funding by about $1 million. The abortion business said the closures — in Beaver Dam, Chippewa Falls, Johnson Creek and Shawano — are related to the loss of these funds. The centers are scheduled to shut down between April and July.

“The closure of four feeders to Planned Parenthood’s three Wisconsin abortion clinics is excellent news,” said Barbara Lyons, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life (WRTL). “It is far past time for Wisconsin citizens to recognize that Planned Parenthood — through its local clinics — refers the overwhelming majority of pregnant women it sees to abortion clinics.”

In 2010, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin performed 62 percent of all abortions in the state. This represents the deaths of 4,827 preborn babies. Its annual report for that year lists zero referrals and zero prenatal care recipients.

“Nationally, (Planned Parenthood) refers over 90 percent of the pregnant women it sees to abortion clinics,” Lyons added.

In 2011, The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and its affiliates received more than $542 million in state and federal taxpayer dollars, according to WRTL. In addition, PPFA has mandated that all of its affiliates perform abortions by 2013.

“Gov. Walker and the state legislature acted courageously to protect Wisconsin taxpayers from having their tax dollars used to destroy human life,” WRTL Legislative Director Susan Armacost said. “While there is more important work to be done to protect taxpayers from paying for abortions, this state budget has greatly improved the situation. On behalf of Wisconsin Right to Life members and supporters throughout the state, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Gov. Walker and the legislature.”

Delaware Planned Parenthood violates 11-year-olds She’s just 11 years old, but Nyiray Thomas already knows what she would say if someone ever tries to convince her to have unprotected sex, even just once. “I would say no, because I don’t want to have a child,” she said. “I want to achieve my goals.”

So begins an article on the website of Planned Parenthood of Delaware promoting its Obamacare funded “sexuality education training institute,” purportedly designed “to teach young people about abstinence and contraception.” But where is the abstinence education in this scenario? The only abstinence encouraged by Planned Parenthood is abstaining from “unprotected” sex. But by God’s grace, in the midst of all that spiritual turmoil and killing, it is very common for abortion workers to walk away from Planned Parenthood once the Church comes to the sidewalk. Those of us who have been active in pro-life work for decades can point to many who have walked away because of our presence on the sidewalks outside Planned Parenthood. Read More

Hobby Lobby Keeps Fighting Obama’s HHS Mandate in Court Hobby Lobby, the Christian crafting store, continues fighting the Obama administration’s HHS mandate in court. After losing its initial bid to stop the mandate from imposing More than $1 million in fines every day for not complying, the company was forced to appeal a judge’s decision and roll back the date of its employee health care plan in order to temporarily escape the fines. The mandate has engendered strong opposition from pro-life groups and Catholic and evangelical Christian companies that do not want to be compelled to pay for drugs for employees that may cause abortions. Why I am Pro-Life, But Also Proudly Anti-Abortion At the 40th year of legal abortion in America, our nation remains divided on the most important human rights issue of our time. We cannot afford another 40 years of bloodshed and tears. We cannot stand by and watch another 55 million die from the deceit of the abortion industry. We must abolish abortion in this lifetime. The most recent Gallup poll has 44% of respondents identifying themselves as pro-life and 48% as pro-choice, where we’ve been stuck, give or take a couple percentage points either way, for decades. However, this same poll found that only 29% of those who responded want Roe v. Wade to be overturned. What happened to that other 15% who claimed they were pro-life? Read More

Are Catholics Getting What We Deserve?

by Judie Brown, American Life League: While Obamacare has been a topic of debate and discussion for the last four years, the Obama/Sebelius contraceptive mandate — complete with the recent vapid compromise—really raised the stakes for Catholics, as United States Conference of Catholic Bishops president Cardinal Timothy Dolan recently pointed out. In his statement, the cardinal enumerated the three main concerns that the bishops have with this mandate. He said the latest proposal “appears to offer second-class status to our first-class institutions in Catholic health care, Catholic education, and Catholic charities,” meaning that because these organizations are an integral part of the Church’s ministry they should be on an equal footing with the institutional Church when it comes to the mandate and similar regulations. For example, if we were discussing the tax exempt status of nonprofits, a parish as well as a Catholic Charities organization would be accountable under the same set of regulations.

The cardinal further pointed out that contraceptive and sterilization coverage could still be problematic because the regulation does not clarify how the separate policy is to be funded. Perhaps the Catholic entity will be paying for both. Add to this the obvious fact that private employers are receiving no protection or exemption if they have moral objections to providing such coverage, and what’s left is a totally unacceptable proposal.

Even though lawsuits against this mandate and Obamacare itself are ongoing, the fundamental question of whether or not it is ethical for the government to impose such mandatory requirements for coverage even when Christian ethics are being violated is not being addressed by the White House and its surrogates in the media. Obama and his cohorts see no reason to do so when their point person, Sandra Fluke, argues that no woman should be discriminated against by having to buy her own birth control! Inane, of course, but fundamental to the Obama way of forcing religious institutions to abide by “the law.”

The fundamental arguments in favor of religious liberty and protection of conscience are summarily ignored in the process.

Addressing this very thing, Archbishop Charles Chaput cited scholar Yuval Levin:
Levin has stressed that the new HHS mandate proposal, “like the versions that have preceded it, betrays a complete lack of understanding of both religious liberty and religious conscience.” In reality, despite the appearance of compromise, “the government has forced a needless and completely avoidable confrontation and has knowingly put many religious believers in an impossible situation.”

Chaput further asked for our prayers saying, “One of the issues America’s bishops now face is how best to respond to an HHS mandate that remains unnecessary, coercive, and gravely flawed. In the weeks ahead the bishops of our country, myself included, will need both prudence and courage—the kind of courage that gives prudence spine and results in right action, whatever the cost.”

Indeed, this shepherd has pointed out what is required, but to my mind this is a little bit late in the game.

At a time when the bishops are confronted head on with an administration that despises the Catholic Church—as witnessed by its actions—one has to point out that four years ago the USCCB did not adamantly oppose the first whispers about Obamacare, but rather worked with the White House to help make it somewhat acceptable. Recall its demand that the law merely be “abortion neutral.”

Today we are reaping what our bishops, perhaps in their naïveté, sowed in Obama’s political fields of weeds. Only time will tell, of course, but for the sake of all those babies silently killed by various birth control chemicals and devices, we will pray, we will fast, and we will seek the Lord’s guidance for our Catholic bishops.

13-Year-Old Girl Keeps Baby

by Jill Stanek: I blogged last week about a Ms. Magazine article lamenting how difficult it is for “young women of color” to get abortions. The author used the story of her 14-yr-old cousin to demonstrate the trouble an adolescent has getting a clandestine abortion. Never once did Ms. or the author worry about how the girl got pregnant.

I used Planned Parenthood’s own statistics to show the younger the pregnant mother, the more likely it is she is a victim of rape or incest. Bottom line: Abortion covers up child rape.

I received an amazing email from Anna, who gave me permission to post her story and her name. It is Anna when she was 13-yrs-old in the photo above, with her newborn daughter Josey. Here is their powerful story: When I was little I was molested for eight years by my stepfather. He was an accomplished liar and fooled everyone, even my mom. No one knew. I was afraid to tell anyone; when you grow up hearing that bad things will happen if anyone finds out, you believe it.

I got pregnant the first time when I was 12. I was scared and told him. He hit me and then loaded me up on drugs, telling my mom that I had been injured while out playing with some other kids. He killed my baby. Of all the things that happened to me, this is what haunts me the most. I will never know who my child might have become. My only hope is in the promise I will get to see him or her in heaven when I get there, and Jesus will take care of my baby until then.

When I was 13, I became pregnant again. This time I did not say anything to him. My mom noticed that my body was changing, even though I was only about two months along at the time, and asked me about it. I remember that morning clearly. It was a Saturday, and my mom had the day off from work, but my stepfather did not. She had borrowed one of those kits to put fake nails on from my aunt, and was doing my nails. I finally got the courage and told her everything. She immediately packed up my brother, sister, and I and took us to our Aunt’s house. From there she called the police.

They arrested him and took us to the hospital for some tests, and then we had to go in for questioning ourselves. In the end, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for molesting not only me but my sister. If he had not killed my first baby, my sister and I would have been free an entire year earlier. This is how I know that abortion protects pedophiles.

I was told by therapists, friends, teachers, family, and even strangers, that it would probably be best if I had an abortion; but I couldn’t. Earlier that year, I had learned in my science class that a child’s DNA comes from both parents, and that meant that this child was also half mine. I also figured that since I was the one who would carry her in MY body for the next several months, that made her mine, not his. I knew from my first pregnancy that he didn’t want me to have the baby. I knew that if I had an abortion, I would be doing just what he wanted, and he would win again. He would not have only killed all of my innocence, he would have killed my daughter.

It might have been easier to choose an abortion. There are many things that I would not have had to go through if I had. It was harder than I have words to describe. But there are some things in life that are worth fighting for, and she was one of them.
I’m not a very big person, 5′ 0″ and 95 lbs. I wasn’t big then either. So, due to my size and my age, I was deemed a high risk pregnancy. I had my first ultrasound at around 3 months, where I got to see her heart beat, and I fell in love. That was when I decided that I couldn’t give her up for adoption either.

The next several months were hard. The looks and comments that I received from people everywhere were difficult to deal with, to say the least. I lost all but two of my friends. But knowing that I would have that little girl soon kept me going. I decided to name her Josey Ann, after a character in a book I had read.

On Friday, July 28, 1995, roughly six weeks before my due date, I went into labor. I was flown from Vernal, Utah, to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. They gave me some drugs to slow down the labor (my water had not broken yet), and steroids to help develop my daughter a little faster so she would have a better chance of surviving. She was born the following Monday, July 31. She weighed 4 lb. 2 oz., and was 18″ long.

Because she was so premature and needed much medical help, they kept her in the NICU. They kept her there until the end of August. Words cannot express the joy I felt when we got to bring her home the day before I started the 7th grade.

I still had nightmares, but I would wake up and have that little smiling face to greet me. When I would get nasty looks and comments, I would go home and hear her giggle. She truly was a light in one of the darkest times of my life. I shudder to think of what that time would have been like had I aborted her.

My mom was amazing, she watched my daughter so that I could finish school. I did graduate and was my class historian. I met a wonderful man who loves both me and my daughter, and we now have four children.

At the time I had Josey, I believed in God, but I didn’t like Him very much. I couldn’t understand why a loving God would allow me to go through all that I did. It wasn’t until I was 26 that I truly found a relationship with Jesus Christ. A wonderful neighbor of ours showed me how much Jesus loves me. Because He loves us, He gave us free will. My stepfather abused that gift when he abused me. But like Romans 8:28 says, God used something horrible to bring me one of the greatest blessings in my life. Knowing her now, I would go back and do it all again.

Josey is 17 now, and is a beautiful young woman, inside and out. She loves writing, drawing and music. She is learning to play the guitar and skateboard. She volunteers in the nursery at our church and helps the worship team at one of our local ministries. She plans on going to college after she graduates to study computer animation.

She is one of the many reasons why I know that abortion is wrong. She is a person, and has been since she was conceived. Had I aborted her, this world would have lost an amazing person. My heart breaks for each child that is killed before he or she has a chance to bring someone the same joy that my daughter has brought me.

Seeing her does not remind me of the horror of my childhood, she reminds me of God’s love, and how He can bring beauty from the ashes. To anyone who is where I was, please hold on. You can make it, and your child will bring you more joy than you can imagine. It will be hard, but it is worth it.
