Christians In Egypt In The Crosshairs

ARRA News Service - Ken Blackwell: What should Americans think about Egypt? We have been doling out aid to the Egyptian military since 1979. The cold peace between Sadat and Mubarak and the Israelis was a purchased peace. It cost us Americans dearly. But, as we have seen in this so-called Arab Spring, that purchased peace was always in danger of unraveling.

Hosni Mubarak stayed in power by paying lip service to his supposed friendship with America, and by stoking the flames of anti-Semitism at home. During his 30-year iron-fisted rule, there was hardly a train station in Egypt that did not hawk the Tsarist-era fabrication, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. And Egyptian television producers gave the Arab-speaking world a TV series based on that defamatory work. In time, the fires set by that dramatization helped consume the Mubarak regime.

The rise of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood can be traced to the dictatorship of Mubarak and its fanning the flames of anti-Semitism. Mohamed Morsi was only the front man for the Muslim Brotherhood. The MB has many others who can take the place of this ousted figurehead. The sight of anti-Morsi demonstrators depicting the elected president of Egypt with a Star of David around his face cannot be comforting.

Jonah Goldberg in National Review Online has put his finger on what may be the majority sentiment among Americans about the Arab Spring. He writes of “The ‘To Hell with Them’ Doctrine.” Goldberg notes that Americans are weary of a region that has “Mideast Turmoil” seemingly painted on our television screens. Goldberg senses that Americans really don’t care which bad actors rise to the top over there.

Can anyone take satisfaction in the government of Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad? Two million Christians lived in Iraq prior to the U.S. invasion. Now, estimates say there are only 600,000 left and many of them are desperate to leave. In Afghanistan, the last Christian church has closed down. Twelve years and one trillion dollars have gone to back up Hamid Karzai’s Kabul government. Can anyone say that Afghans are more free, more secure as a result?

In today’s post-Morsi Egypt, at least 60 churches have been torched. Nuns are being marched down streets by Islamist mobs in scenes reminiscent of the French Revolution. Or worse, the Russian Revolution.

The Coptic Pope, Tawadros II, appeared on national television with Gen. al-Sisi when he announced the military had taken power from Mohamed Morsi. As a result, no doubt, Muslim Brotherhood supporters have gone on a rampage against not only the military and the police, but also against Christian targets. Homes and churches, convents and orphanages are all in danger of red paint and a torch in the night.

London’s Daily Mail reports a local bishop, Ibram, told his parishioners not to resist the mobs. “The looters were so diligent that they came back to one of the five churches they had already ransacked to see if they could get more.”

The Christian Copts are not recent arrivals to Egypt. This historic community has been in Egypt since St. Mark. They were there when Islam conquered the Nile River kingdoms. Today, they constitute around 10 percent of the population of this nation of 90 million. But for how much longer?

Our American position should be to defend the first freedom first. We should loudly stand for religious freedom. Our founders understood that without religious freedom, civil liberty is impossible. When U.S. senators say “democracy is in the eye of the beholder,” as Richard Blumenthal recently told FOX, we should respond that that mistaken view leads only to chaos. It leads to the scenes we see on our TV and computer screens daily.

Democracy needs a firm foundation in religious freedom. Jefferson and Madison understood this. Today’s state department does not. We need to press our own government to stand for religious freedom because it is the foundation of all other freedoms. This means that Christians and Muslims should be free in Egypt. And, if there are any Jews left there, they too should be free.

Anything less than this guarantees only a Mubarak lid on an ever-boiling cauldron. And such lids are expensive and can never substitute for real freedom. Democracy without guarantees of God-given religious freedom cannot survive. It is no better than a lynch mob. As we can clearly see.

Conjoined Twins Safely Separated, Almost Became Abortion Victims Emmett and Owen Ezell were born last month in Dallas, Texas but they were very much unlike most sets of twins. They were are identical twins[1] joined in utero — a rare phenomenon that happens in as many as 1 in 200,000 births. About half of such twins are stillborn, but Owen and Emmett survived not only the birthing process — their mother rejected abortion. Read More

Iowa Medical Board Adopts Rules Banning Dangerous Webcam Abortions The Iowa Board of Medicine voted 8-2 today to adopt a rule effectively ending webcam abortion in Iowa. The webcam abortion practice started with the Planned Parenthood of the Heartland affiliate using it in Iowa, a rural state where the abortion business has a difficult time getting an abortion practitioner to each of its clinics. As a result, it set up a process by which the abortion practitioner only visits with the woman considering using the mifepristone abortion pill via a videoconference, as opposed to an in-person visit the FDA suggests. Abortion Activist: You Don’t Need to be a Doctor to Rip Apart a Baby With a Vacuum “Things are looking pretty bleak in the world of abortion care” with “[a] wave of states” having been “disturbingly successful at shutting down abortion providers by passing medically unnecessary restrictions on clinics,” abortion rights absolutist and Daily Beast contributor Amanda Marcotte lamented at the open of her August 29 Women in the World blog post. Bro-Choice Men Prove Abortion is the Ultimate Exploitation of Women Abortion advocates like to phrase the ongoing legal battles over abortion as a “war on women,” but is it really? Most women don’t identify as pro-abortion. At least half of all American women, if not slightly more than half, are pro-life. Abortion is in no way an issue where all women walk in lockstep. And really, is it women who benefit most from abortion being free and legal on demand? Hardly. The people who have the most to gain from keeping abortion legal at all times are slimeball men. Unless souls are saved, there can be no peace

Rey Flores
Director of Outreach
American Life League
by Rey Flores, American Life League: Unless souls are saved, nothing is saved; there can be no world peace unless there is soul peace. World wars are only projections of the conflicts waged inside the souls of men and women, for nothing happens in the external world that has not first happened within a soul. — From Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s Peace of Soul

No truer words could be said of today’s cultural turmoil and chaos. While we all know that the story ends with Christ’s most precious blood washing away our sins, it remains a difficult thing to witness so much pain and suffering in our world.

In what appears to be an escalating culture war between those who believe in the sanctity of life and those who believe in the unholy, we truly must be prepared for the battle on the spiritual front.

Evil is no longer lurking in the shadows of the night, but is in full display with a blinding neon sign proclaiming its presence and seducing those who are unguarded. Not everyone likes to wear the uncomfortable and heavy armor of God, but in the end it will absolutely protect us.

Evil is now quite apparent, whether it’s a gaggle of pro-aborts chanting “Hail Satan” at the Texas state capitol building or pop singer Miley Cyrus taking the stage at the annual MTV Video Music Awards, gyrating suggestively like a succubus wagging its drug-tongue at America. We are under serious spiritual attack.

The culture of death takes no prisoners. That is why we call it the culture of death. I don’t think many people believe in the malevolent spirits that are truly working overtime to drag us into sin and eternal damnation.

Our entire world is in the greatest peril modern man has ever known. I don’t mean the kind of peril that may dismember us or even physically kill us. The danger we face is so much greater—greater than we could ever imagine.

The irony is that the very same supposed-peaceniks who helped put President Barack Obama in the White House are the most ardent pro-aborts who see nothing wrong with chopping an innocent baby to bits, even outside the womb.

It took a persistent social media campaign by pro-life activists to draw attention to the Kermit Gosnell horrors before the pro-abortion news media propaganda machine ever mentioned it in their useless publications.

Not only is the evil real, but so many have been snowed and are both equally evil and complicit participants in promoting the culture of depravity and death, or they are simply useful idiots helping propagate it.

Abortion, contraception, homosexuality, pornographic entertainment, dumbed down Common Core school curriculums, the list goes on and on. Add to all this a government that is hell bent on outlawing Christianity—as in the case of a proposed ordinance in the city of San Antonio, Texas—and we have something that resembles hell right here on earth.

Churches are being burned down to the ground around the world, Catholics are being murdered because of our faith, and our government does nothing to condemn these acts.

Fret not, because this battle isn’t over. Prayer is our most powerful weapon.

Take full advantage of the Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and all of the sacraments still available to us as much as possible. We never know just how soon these gifts will be taken from us by the growing persecution of Christians in our nation.

They may be able to burn down our churches, but they can never burn down the undying love for our Lord and His Church that we must have. We must be prepared to die as martyrs as many courageous saints, priests, and lay Catholics have done before us.

Like martyred Mexican priest Blessed Miguel Pro’s last words at his execution, arms stretched out like Christ crucified, we too must proclaim “¡VIVA CRISTO REY!” Long live Christ the King!

The pro-aborts may have the high-dollar donors, news propagandists, and a soul-sick government behind them, but what they haven’t got is the truth. Those who defend human life and human dignity have the truth of our Lord Jesus Christ and that trumps anything they’ve got.

Let us heed the words of venerable Fulton J. Sheen, for we are the Church Militant.

County Clerks Seek Marriage Decision

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink: New Mexico county clerks — all 33 of them — have decided to take the definition of marriage to the state Supreme Court.

Even though, the state has not redefined marriage, over the past two weeks, clerks in six counties began issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Some did so voluntarily, others after a lower court order. And last week, Attorney General Gary King refused to stop it.

"This is lawlessness brought to new heights," said Focus on the Family Judicial Analyst Bruce Hausknecht. "No clerk has the legal 'right' to issue a same-sex marriage license. Their obligation is to follow the existing law, which limits marriage in New Mexico to one man and one woman." . . . Read More

The Question That Will Define Us

What Does Christianity Look Like in a Culture That Kills Its Children?
by Rolley Haggard:Dave: Hey Norm, what's the correct pronunciation of the word “evangelical”? Is it “EVV-angelical,” or “EEV-angelical”? Long E or short E?
Norm: Long E.
Dave: So, “EEV-angelical,” right?
Norm: Right.
Dave: You sound pretty sure of yourself.
Norm: I am pretty sure of myself.
Dave: Oh? And how can you be so sure yours is the correct pronunciation? I've heard it used both ways.
Norm: Because I know the theology behind it.
Dave: Theology? What's theology got to do with the way you pronounce “evangelical”?
Norm: Simple. Using my pronunciation, if you take the “angelic” out of “evangelical,” phonetically speaking, what does that leave?
Dave: “Evil.”
Norm: I rest my case.
[Author's note: A halo each for “Dave” and “Norm” if the interaction above registers Honorable Mention in WikiLeaks' heavenly counterpart.]
The point of that little squib is to introduce an observation regarding American evangelical Christianity: It has lost the angelic. Or, to borrow language from Mark Twain, reports of its moral demise have been greatly understated.

Permit me, myself an evangelical, to explain.

Visualize for a moment, if you will, objectivity. To that end, imagine you are an alien come to earth for the first time. Being of vastly superior intellectual capability, you assess in mere moments the entire catalog of recorded human knowledge.

Being, furthermore, an unbiased and highly rational creature, you reach accurate, definitive conclusions on certain things that, sadly, the majority of mankind is still quibbling—in many cases, warring—over, even after centuries of opportunities to “get it right.”

One of the more important conclusions you reach is that Christianity is true, and that while there are varying degrees of truth and enlightenment to be found in some of the other religions, Christianity, by dint of possessing from the Creator-Redeemer Himself an infallible and inerrant written revelation called the Bible, is uniquely qualified to be properly described as “the one true faith.”

So far, so good.

But then you make a disturbing observation. Those who call themselves “Christians” by and large look quite different from what you would expect. Not all, of course, but the great majority. The problem is this: Though they say they believe the Bible and love Jesus Christ, they live lives wholly out of character with what an objective and unbiased observer, like you, would expect.

You ponder this. You note that Christianity concedes that even those whom the Bible calls “saints” are still in a very real sense merely “splendid sinners” who have been forgiven and are gradually being made holy. So a certain—even in some instances a significant—amount of sin and unfaithfulness is to be expected and should not be considered especially inconsistent.

However, the deviation you have observed is wildly off-the-charts. What you have observed is moral dissonance orders of magnitude beyond anything you would have expected. Indeed, in comparing your findings with data from a mere couple generations prior, you discover that today's Christianity is astonishingly comparable to the ultimate complicity with the very epitome of evil: the German church's unwillingness to speak out against the wholesale genocide of Jews in the Third Reich.

What you see today is a “Christianity” just like that, standing by largely silent and apathetic as the surrounding culture slaughters its children on the altar of convenience, in numbers more common to astronomical calculations than to homicide reports or even to death tallies from world wars.

The “bride of Christ,” you note with irony, vastly more resembles the unfaithful wife willing to compromise herself for enjoyment's sake, than the honorable woman determined at all costs to be true to a Husband characterized by unselfish sacrificial love. This wayward bride, you reflect, is every bit as accepting (in practice) of a “final solution” to the irksome impositions of unwanted human beings as were her Teutonic predecessors, with this single, trivial difference: All her victims are fetuses.

Your objective assessment kicks into high gear. You ask, “What would true Christianity look like in a culture that thus kills its children? Would it look like this? Would it have on its hands the blood of 56 million aborted people—blood that was shed with its tacit permission, its implicit approval, its effective complicity?”

You remark to yourself that the Christians of this present generation could have spoken up, but they didn't.

They could have regularly and passionately preached against this horrific evil, but they didn't.

They could have prayed and marched and held vigils day and night, but they didn't.

They could have voted and lobbied and advocated and cried aloud without ceasing, but they didn't.

They could have written letters and held signs and stood outside abortion clinics day in and day out, but they didn't.

They could have made it clear to their elected leaders, their neighbors, and perhaps most importantly to themselves, that here is an unspeakably great evil that cannot, that must not be tolerated. But they didn't. By and large they didn't.

And by their not doing what they could have done about this great evil, they committed an even greater evil, because they knew better than to let it happen and they let it happen anyway. They gave sanction to it by their silence. As a direct result of their not doing what they could have done and should have done, year after year for 40 years, 56 million utterly helpless human beings created in the image of God were murdered in cold blood with virtually no opposition and scarcely a second thought.

You are stunned with disbelief.

You glance at your watch. You're already late for responsibilities on the other side of the galaxy. You must go.

As Earth recedes, you survey the contemporary religious landscape one last time. One last time, you consider the monolithic question that will define this generation: “What does Christianity look like in a culture that kills its children?”

The answer comes thundering back to you, the Objective Observer (as indeed it must to any honest, objective observer): “Not like this.”

Folks, it's time we put the “angelic” back into “evangelical”. Not to do so is to relegate ourselves to the wrong side of history. Again. And for that there's literally hell to pay.
Fetal Imposition
When Judah's Lion comes to fetch His cubs
And finds them lying slain upon the lap
Of her who, pleasure-drunk with other loves,
Abandoned wifely bed and mother's pap
To sate her soul with selfish dalliance
Disdaining fetuses for phalluses
And faithfulness for filthy prurience,
Bethink you He will brook her pretenses?
No; He will roar with purpose terrible
And freeze with justice quick her lust-hot blood
For crimes against His babes unbearable
And nuptial acts as treacherous as lewd;
And Hell's ironic sneer will mock her death
As, fetal-like, she slumps beneath His wrath.

Firefighter Fights for 9-11 Cross Memorial

by Bethany Monk : A New Jersey firefighter wants to honor those who lost their lives on 9-11 with a cross at the state's memorial site.

Many people like the idea.

Not the American Atheists. The group is threatening a lawsuit if the city of Princeton goes ahead with it.

Princeton Deputy Fire Chief Roy James said the memorial will help us remember the stories surrounding that day.

“I’m a Jew,” James, told Fox News. “Ironically, I’m fighting to have this cross there because I believe that someone’s story is behind that. The story needs to be told. It has nothing to do with religious faith. It has something to do with telling history.”

James said it was common to see symbols such as a cross or the Star of David cut out of beams from the World Trade Center in the days following the terrorist attacks. These beams were often given to family members. The one he wants to place at the memorial already had the cross when it arrived at the city. [Read More]

Abortion Coverage for Congress?

Family Research Council:  We've alerted you before to Obamacare's pro-abortion guerrilla tactics, the secretive abortion surcharge and health plan accounting gimmicks. It appears the administration is up to it again!

Recently the federal government's human resources department, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), issued a proposed rule to help subsidize healthcare for Congressional staff and Members of Congress being forced onto the Obamacare state exchanges. The kicker is those federal dollars may now go to pay for plans offered on those exchanges that include abortion coverage.

There's been a longstanding ban on federal funds going to pay for abortion in Congressional and federal healthcare plans, but it now appears the administration is pushing a new abortion subsidy. The OPM plans to use its authority found in the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program (FEHBP) to contribute premium support to plans offered on the state exchanges that cover elective abortion.

The administration claims it will comply with the law prohibiting federal funds from going to abortion coverage, but healthcare experts and Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), the author of the FEHBP ban, remain skeptical since OPM rule does not restrict Members and staff from receiving contributions if they choose plans with abortion coverage.

If experience is any guide, where abortion is not explicitly prohibited it's implicitly allowed. If the Administration plans to respect current law it should be an easy lift to include a ban in the proposed regulations, if for no other reason than to clarify an ambiguity.

Right now the OPM is soliciting the public to comment on the new rule. Join us in telling the administration via public comment to quit hiding behind arcane regulations and bring this issue into the sunlight by explicitly prohibiting Members of Congress and their staff from receiving contributions through FEHBP for plans on the healthcare law's state exchanges that include abortion coverage.

Please provide a public comment to stop the Obama Administration from including abortion in Congressional Healthcare plans

Scientists: Brain Wave Patterns Show Unborn Children Recognize Words in the Womb  Babies learn to recognize words and sounds in the womb, scientists say. An the baby does so well at recognizing the words that he or she has memories of them after birth, research shows. From today’s report: It may seem implausible that fetuses can listen to speech within the womb, but the sound-processing parts of their brain become active in the last trimester of pregnancy, and sound carries fairly well through the mother’s abdomen. “If you put your hand over your mouth and speak, that’s very similar to the situation the fetus is in,” says cognitive neuroscientist Eino Partanen of the University of Helsinki. “You can hear the rhythm of speech, rhythm of music, and so on.” Read More

San Antonio Proposed Ordinance Bans Christians from City Government

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink: San Antonio City officials will discuss a proposed ordinance on Wednesday that state leaders say would severely threaten religious freedom. It could also a dangerous precedent for other cities throughout the country.

Mayor Julian Castro and gay activists call it a “non-discrimination” ordinance. But really, it is quite the opposite. If passed, those who hold a biblical view of marriage and relationships could be banned from being involved in city government.

Councilmembers are expected to vote on the issue next week.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said in a statement Monday that it violates the state Constitution.

“I oppose the proposed ordinance because it would not prevent discrimination, but impose it: stifling speech, repressing religious liberty, and imposing burdens on those who hold a traditional view on human relations,” he said. “The proposed ordinance runs contrary to the Texas Constitution, which prohibits religious tests, and also defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”

Not only that, but the U.S. Constitution protects religious expression via the First Amendment, he explained. . . . [Read More]

DOJ Says Atheists Qualify for Clergy Home Tax Break

United Press International: The U.S. Justice Department says in a legal filing leaders of an atheist group qualify for the same housing tax exemption priests receive. The paradoxical position comes in response to a lawsuit by the Freedom from Religion Foundation in Madison, Wis., which seeks to end the parsonage tax break granted to priests, ministers, rabbis and other clergy by the U.S. government. The tax break allows them to claim part of their income as a tax-free housing allowance.

Annie Laurie Gaylor, who receives a $15,000 housing stipend from the Freedom from Religion Foundation, is suing the federal government because she has to pay taxes on that money while "ministers of the gospel," as the law defines priests, do not.

In response, the federal government said rather than agree to end the parsonage exemption it could be extended to Gaylor because she is the leader of a religious movement -- albeit one that does not believe in God.

Legal maneuvering aside, Gaylor told The (Nashville) Tennessean the government has missed the point of her lawsuit -- not to mention the fundamental difference between her atheist group and a religious order.

"We are not ministers," she said. "We are having to tell the government the obvious -- we are not a church." . . . The lawsuit has not been resolved though Zuckerman said it's unlikely a court will strike down the parsonage tax break. [Full Story]

Medical Examiner May Not Bury Bodies of Babies Gosnell Killed for 10 Years A coalition of pro-life groups gathered in Philadelphia Sunday evening to call on the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s office to release to them the remains of 47 aborted babies found at Kermit Gosnell’s squalid abortion clinic so that the babies can have the dignity of a proper funeral and burial. Gosnell was convicted earlier this year of three counts of first degree murder for intentionally severing the spinal cords of late-term babies that had been born alive during abortions. Read More

New Birthing Center Will Deliver Babies in One Room, Abort Them in Another A new birthing center in Buffalo, New York will provide an alternative for women seeking to give birth outside of a hospital setting. But it will also do abortions — setting up a terrible irony. Babies will be welcomed into life in one room and, down the hall, their lives will be snuffed out in abortions. From a local news report with more on this chilling paradox. Read More

“My Abortion Was a Horrifying Experience, Women Were Treated Like Cattle” Carla Stream knows what it’s like to experience an abortion decision she would later come to regret. Her personal story is one she has shared before and she calls it a “horrifying” experience where women were subjected to being treated “like cattle.” “I was 24 when I found out I was pregnant. I didn’t know what to do and wasn’t sure to whom I could turn,” Stream says. “I told my roommate who offered to drive me to an abortion clinic. The only other person I told didn’t say anything.” Read More

Babies Gosnell Butchered in Infanticides, Abortions, Deserve Proper Burials This morning, we gathered pro-lifers in front of the Philadelphia medical coroner’s office for a second time, after we were locked out the first time this July, demanding the release of 47 tiny humans for burial. These bab3es died at the hand of a vicious man who held a license to practice medicine, but we all know he did killing than healing. They were found in freezers and jars in the office of abortionist, Kermit Gosnell, and are now in the custody of the city coroner’s office. Read More

Pro-Abortion Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Repeats Assertion She Won’t Retire Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of five pro-abortion members of the Supreme Court who are preventing any bill banning abortions from ever becoming law. She said in July that she has no plans to retire and reiterated that in a new interview with the New York Times. From a report on the interview: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg faulted her colleagues recently for creating a judicial atmosphere of activism, and she suggested she’s going to stick around and try to turn back that tone, for at least another year. Without Religious Morals and Values, Abortion on Demand Would Flourish A In The Coming of the Third Reich, hailed by the Atlantic Monthly as “the definitive English-language account,” Cambridge historian Richard Evans outlines the various philosophies which undergirded the Nazi regime. Among many others, he points to thinkers such as Ernst Haeckel, who openly advocated killing the mentally ill, and Alfred Ploetz, who believed a panel of doctors should attend every birth to determine if the baby was fit to live. As Evans proceeds to explain... Read More

Illinois Abandons Abstinence-Only Program

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink: Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn recently signed a bill into law requiring public schools to teach Planned Parenthood's version of sex education. Students in sixth through 12th grade will receive comprehensive sex education, which includes information about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases.

This will only give young people a false sense of safety.

"The type of education that the Illinois governor is lauding here actually teaches that abstinence is simply one option on a continuum of choices," said Mary Ann Mosack, a member of the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) board of directors. "That really gives young people the false information and the false sense of security that if they use protection, as they call it, or contraception, that that makes sex safe." . . .  Read More

The Gentle Art of Sidewalk Counseling

by Edmund Miller, Celebrate Life Magazine: Almost from the very beginning, the problem facing history and humanity has been fragmentation. Immediately after disobeying God's command, Adam and Eve's relationship fragmented under the blow of blame and guilt. That fragmentation then spread to their offspring, as brother murdered brother. Ultimately, we find the whole human community suffering from the inability to connect, to relate, to understand each other. Man's efforts to communicate with others became mere babel. The ultimate answer to this babel is, of course, in Pentecost----that is, in the communion of the Church, our relatedness in the Body of Christ. For those who step out of this community, however, there can be only isolation.

I don’t think sinful man’s isolation can be seen any more clearly than at the abortion mill. One of the clearest reflections of the community of the Triune Godhead, we know, is the Trinitarian community of the family. That community, however, is badly wounded, perhaps destroyed, at the abortuary. When the man puts the woman in the car to take her there, he tells her he didn’t really intend the message of self-gift he spoke at the moment of physical intimacy. He says he wants the incarnation of their union—the child—to be torn apart. The woman says she doesn’t trust the man. She says there’s no such thing as sacrifice, no such thing as love, no such thing as communion. For the woman, elective abortion is total despair.

However, even at that moment of despair, even at the very door of the abortuary, miraculous moments have occurred—moments in which a mother recognizes the reality of another soul and her connection to that soul, moments in which a man recognizes his responsibility to the woman he has brought to that dark place. These moments are often witnessed and, in some ways, facilitated by the pro-life movement’s frontline activists: sidewalk counselors. The methods used by sidewalk counselors to help bring about these moments vary from region to region, and even from facility to facility. Nevertheless, there are a few universals that, I believe, all sidewalk counselors can and should observe. Following are the general guidelines* employed by the Guadalupe Partners (see sidebar) who sidewalk counsel in the Detroit metropolitan area.

General guidelines
When I present sidewalk counseling workshops (see sidebar), usually I’m asked, “What do you say to a woman who’s going in for an abortion?” Unfortunately, there’s no script for sidewalk counseling. The sidewalk counselor, like Saint Paul, has to be “all things to all people.” He must be able to adapt himself to where he is and to whom he is speaking.

With that theme in mind, one must first realize this person isn’t always a woman. The woman, certainly, is the one who will suffer the abortion, but sometimes it’s her boyfriend or dad who is really going for the abortion. When the sidewalk counselor sees the potential customers getting out of their cars, he has to make an immediate assessment: Who really wants the abortion, and what kind of person is he?

A Spanish-speaking couple or woman will probably be more open to appeals of faith. A father taking in a daughter needs to be reminded that the trouble she’s experiencing can’t be erased by a five-minute procedure and that the abortion itself will inflict her with years of guilt. A boyfriend or husband must be told that if he loves his woman, he won’t want to destroy what she—what they —have created. One will remind him, too, that abortion is usually the death sentence of a love relationship. An older woman who already has several children can be asked why this one is any less valuable: Doesn’t she love them all equally? Finally, one might ask a teenage girl if she had always dreamed of beginning her womanhood in an abortion mill.

While there are several possibilities for what to say, there are many things one shouldn’t say or do. The sidewalk counselor shouldn’t trigger the woman’s or couple’s self-defense mechanism, meaning that the sidewalk counselor shouldn’t do or say anything that causes a woman to create a mental barrier between herself and the counselor.

Years ago, one of my high school students and I pulled up to a Chicago abortuary where pro-life rescuers had blocked the doors. The police had created a corridor to one of the doors, and that corridor was lined with pro-lifers, many of them holding signs. As my student and I approached the scene, an abortuary “escort,” mistaking us for a couple, approached to ask if we wanted to be escorted into the facility. We both looked at each other and then said, “Yes.” Once inside, we argued loudly about Ashlea’s feigned decision to abort. After 10 minutes of brilliant improvisation, I was kicked out.

What’s most important to recount, though, is what we experienced while walking through that corridor of pro-lifers. It was like walking through a factory, a barrage of noise, none of which made sense. When someone entering an abortuary feels—rightly or wrongly—that she’s being attacked, she creates a mental wall that blocks any message others try to convey. Any kind of shouting, then, no matter how worthy the message, is self-defeating. Large signs or even bulky packets of material can have the same effect.

Bodily positioning on the sidewalk is also very important for sidewalk counselors. They shouldn’t group together; instead, as an expression of their own weakness, they should approach the woman or couple singly. To a certain extent, sidewalk counselors must abandon fears for their own safety. They shouldn’t speak to anyone from a “safe distance,” but calmly walk right up to the man or woman. This guarantees that the counselor’s voice will be as non-threatening as possible. Not long ago, a woman inside of a Dearborn, Michigan, abortion facility came out to smoke a cigarette. As she stood just outside the front door, a ring of pro-lifers stood about eight feet from her, talking at her, but not really talking to her. Sidewalk counselor Alicia Wong (a Guadalupe Partners member) approached, stepped right through the ring to the woman’s side, and began a quiet conversation.

Perhaps the most important “don’t do” rule is that you should never talk over another sidewalk counselor. I know how tempting it is. You’re convinced that what you have to say is directly from the Holy Spirit, sent by Angelic Express. You’re full of fire, so you call it out, right over another sidewalk counselor’s active conversation. At that moment, the woman or boyfriend takes advantage of the slight interruption and says, “I have to go back in now.”

A person being spoken at has an easier time of breaking away than a person who has been engaged in a true conversation. So, in order to engage a woman or couple entering a facility, a sidewalk counselor needs to ask questions: Is this your first child? How many children do you have? Are you married? What brought you here? What do you think abortion will do for you? Do you know anything about the long-term effects of abortion? How can we help you? The answers to these questions will point the way for you to follow in the conversation. The advantage is that what you say won’t be a generic script; instead, your words will speak directly to an abortion-minded person.

The overall environment in which sidewalk counselors should work is an environment of prayer and quiet. Ideally, everyone present at the abortuary at that time should represent a unified effort directed by a single leader. leader. Roles should be clearly defined. Those who are there for prayer support shouldn’t interfere with sidewalk counseling or take up the sidewalk counselor’s space. In other words, they shouldn’t stand right in front of the door, but well off to the side. Sidewalk counselors should be well spaced, each working in their own assigned zone. They shouldn’t carry a sign or do anything else to advertise their presence.

A foretaste of heaven
Finally, a sidewalk counselor should understand that when real, human contact is made with a mother or couple, and she or they have rejected the temptation to kill the child, often that moment is the beginning—not the end—of the story. Invite the mother out to breakfast. Take her grocery shopping. Ask if you can visit her home and meet her other children. In other words, try to keep the relationship going.

After all, this is what the work is about: It’s about the life of the child, yes; about the health of the mother, yes; but mostly, it’s about relationship, the truth that no one lives in isolation. The community we share and experience on earth is a foretaste and preparation for the final, perfect community of heaven.

When I and other Guadalupe Partners began making trips into Detroit to visit mothers or families, we felt intimidated by the city’s harsh reputation. We entered, it seemed, a strange and threatening land. Now, though, that city holds many friends for us. Often, when rescuing a baby from the suction machine, we find that we have, in a way, rescued the whole family.

This seemed poignantly clear not long ago, when we buried a baby miscarried by a mother originally turned away from an abortion center. Despite his mother’s change of heart, he had died. But now she had gathered a few friends to say goodbye and to bury her child. Even the woman who had fronted the money for the baby to be killed was there by his casket, acknowledging that he was, after all, a member of the human family. This child died loved, not rejected. And a broken family is a little less broken.

New Mexico Attorney General Refuses to Stop Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

by Bethany Monk, CitizenLink : The New Mexico Attorney General said it’s “not a good idea” to issue same-sex marriage licenses in the state, but refuses to challenge a county clerk’s decision to do so.

A Doña Ana County Clerk began issuing the licenses Wednesday, even though the state has not created same-sex marriage. Shortly after, Attorney General Gary King said his office will not take any action against the clerk.

“We previously advised that it was not a good idea to issue the marriage licenses to same sex couples due to the uncertain status of state law,” he said in a statement Wednesday. “We do not have authority over county clerks in New Mexico. Our position that the current law is unconstitutional remains unchanged and presents a barrier for us to bring any sort of court action now that would stop him from issuing the marriage licenses. As the situation evolves, we will determine our response at the appropriate time.”

And on Thursday, District Judge Sarah Singleton said a Santa Fe County Clerk must start issuing the licenses to same-sex couples; if not, the clerk must appear in court next month.

This is the first time in the state’s history that a New Mexico judge has ruled that that couples may receive the licenses.

This ruling came the same day the New Mexico Supreme Court said that a husband-and-wife business must compromise their religious beliefs and photograph same-sex ceremonies. . . .

What is happening in New Mexico, and in other states, gives the perception that the American people are moving toward same-sex marriage.

However, these threats to our religious freedom are dangerous for everyone.

“Once religious liberty is threatened, everybody’s liberty is threatened whether they’re a Christian or non-Christian,” Redmond said. “And therein lies the crisis.” [Full Article]

Blistering New Ad Attacks Cory Booker's Radical Abortion Record

ARRA News Service Editor:  Pro-life supporters no matter where you live should consider putting your money behind your beliefs and values and supporting pro-life candidate Steve Lonegan for U.S. Senate.  We don't need another pro-abortionist in the U.S. Senate.
Booker Drove Democrats to Make Abortion Central to Party Platform
ARRA News Service - Washington, D.C.American Commitment Action Fund (AC Action Fund) and Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) are jointly releasing a new ad targeting Newark Mayor Cory Booker's radical record on abortion. The ad blasts Cory Booker's record of promoting abortion with no restrictions-including his significant role as Co-Chair of the Democratic National Convention's Platform Committee.  Booker is the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in the special election to succeed Frank Lautenberg.

“Cory Booker was instrumental in driving Democrats to make abortion the centerpiece of the party’s platform,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBA List.  “His extreme pro-abortion stance flies in the face of the majority of Americans, especially women, who oppose late-term abortion.”

“You cannot get any more extreme on abortion than Cory Booker,” said Phil Kerpen, Founder of AC Action Fund.  “We’re honored to partner with SBA List to bring this shocking information to New Jersey voters.”

The new online ad, titled “Too Extreme,” begins: “Democrats used to call for abortion to be safe, legal, and rare.  But not Cory Booker.”

The ad cuts to Booker speaking at a Planned Parenthood rally: “I was the Co-Chair of our DNC Platform.  We affirmed a woman's right to choose.”

It then transitions to Cory Booker being confronted regarding his record by journalist Cokie Roberts on ABC's This Week: “You took out language from previous platforms that said it should be safe, legal, and rare.  And I think this Democratic convention was really over the top in terms of abortion.”

“Cory Booker's platform supports abortion regardless of ability to pay.  That means taxpayer funded.”

“And Booker opposes any restrictions.  He supports late-term and partial-birth abortion.  And opposes safety regulations.”

“Cory Booker even told Twitter he is proud and inspired by efforts to allow late term abortions in unregulated clinics.”

“Cory Booker on abortion?: not safe, not rare, and taxpayer funded up to the day of delivery.”

“Too extreme.

The campaign is using the hashtag #BookerFAIL on Twitter, and the ad can be viewed online at: YourTube: #Booker or at

American Commitment Action Fund (AC Action Fund) is dedicated to defeating big government liberals and electing free-market conservatives in races for federal office.  Paid for by American Commitment Action Fund and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee. The Susan B. Anthony List, and its connected Political Action Committee, the SBA List Candidate Fund, are dedicated to electing candidates and pursuing policies that will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List will emphasize the election, education, promotion, and mobilization of pro-life women.

Planned Parenthood Abortion Business Has Closed 24 Clinics in 2013 Planned Parenthood offices across the nation have closed this year at a record rate, according to data compiled by Operation Rescue. At least 24 Planned Parenthood sites have closed in so far in 2013. This number includes 3 surgical abortion clinics, 3 clinics that dispensed abortion pills, and 19 offices that referred for abortions. “Abortion numbers are down so there is less demand for Planned Parenthood. Couple that with recent scandals involving Planned Parenthood that have resulted increased disapproval of their abortion business and it’s easy to see why these clinics are closing on such a large scale,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. Teen Sex Sleepovers: The Latest Fad in Immoral Sex Education Just when I think I’ve heard it all, I come across something that makes me pause in disgust. This week, I read an article from the Huffington Post titled, “How Do You Feel about Sex and Teenage Sleepovers?” There’s no doubt how I feel, but let’s first take a look at what the author said. In the first paragraph she asks, “Why not teach children how to have sex well, the way you teach them how to do other things?” She elaborates, describing parents inviting the teenager’s partner over, having a nice dinner and then the couple “toddles” off to bed together. (In reality, that’s just permitting the behavior to take place, not actually educating.) Read More

Emmy-Award-Winning Actress Holland Taylor Promotes Abortion in New Video Seventy year-old Holland Taylor has played a wide-range of supporting roles in numerous television productions as well as bit parts in just as many movies. In 2013 the Emmy award-winning actress wrote and starred in a one-woman and quite rhapsodic Broadway show about former (rabidly pro-abortion) Texas Governor, Ann Richards. Although Taylor was critically acclaimed for her turn as the alcoholic one-term governor and mother of Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, the show closed much earlier than anticipated. Incredibly poor showing at the box office makes it seem that even übber-liberal New Yorkers (like those of us in the real world) could only take Richards in small doses. Read More

A Gut-Wrenching Failure

by Judie Brown, American Life League:  Mandated coverage for birth control is disturbing enough, but when Catholic leaders and healthcare providers don't stand up for Catholic teachings and proclaim the evilness of this mandate, something is seriously wrong. Though they may find it difficult, the leaders of the Church must join together and speak out in protection of the sanctity of all life. If they don't speak out now, what the future may hold will not only sicken our bodies, but will sicken our souls. [Read Full Article]

Hillary Knows

Brian Burch, CatholicVote: Hillary is on the move. Can you guess where she plans to stop first? Answer: A big fundraiser for pro-abort "Catholic" Terry McAuliffe to defeat pro-life Catholic Ken Cuccinelli.

We have endorsed Ken Cuccinelli. Ken is a practicing Catholic, father of 7, and proudly pro-life. And he needs your help now.

Think about this: Hillary's first major political event after leaving the State Department will be to raise money for extremist Terry McAuliffe.

The race is a bellwether for the entire country. What happens in Virginia in this November will reverberate across the country --- AND our Church. And Hillary knows Virginia matters in 2013... and 2016.

The last thing we need is another prominent pro-abortion Catholic politician spreading more scandal!

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of helping to elect our fellow Catholic Ken Cuccinelli. We can’t wait until October to act. The election is less than 90 days away!

If we hope to turn the tide in Washington D.C., and elsewhere, we need to elect Ken Cuccinelli and deal McAuliffe-Hillary a huge defeat.

It’s go time.
