Pro-Life News, Sept. 30, 2013

Senate Democrats Reject GOP Obamacare Delay, Force Abortion Funding Senate Democrats today, on a party-line vote, rejected the House Republicans’ effort Saturday night to delay Obamacare, and stop abortion funding and promotion. The Senate yanked out the House-approved amendments on the bill to fund the federal government, meaning it rejected amendments to strike abortion funding from Obamcare and to strike the HHS mandate that compels religious groups to pay for birth control and drugs that may cause abortions. Obama Admin Will Break Law to Fund Abortions for Congress, Congressional Staff The Obama administration has confirmed it will break current federal law to pay for abortions for members of Congress and Congressional staff via Obamacare. Leading pro-life groups and pro-life members of Congress have been concerned that the Office of Personnel Management will not comply with the Smith Amendment that bans taxpayer-funding of abortions in federal employee health care plans. Under the amendment, which is existing law, federal funds may not be used to pay for abortions via federally-funded health insurance for congressional staff and Members. Read More

Former Abortion Practitioner Lays His Surgical Instruments at the Feet of the Pope The pro-life movement is filled with former abortion practitioners who have experienced a monumental change of heart. Many have converted to Christianity, become pro-life, and some now work as legitimate doctors or become associated with pregnancy centers providing women with tangible abortion alternatives. Dr. Antonio Oriente is one such former abortion practitioner. He so genuinely wanted to receive forgiveness for his involvement in the abortion industry that, recently, he brought the surgical instruments he used to take the lives of unborn babies in abortions and laid them at the feet of Pope Francis. More Than 1 Million People Alive Today Because the Hyde Amendment Stopped Abortion Funding The Hyde Amendment sticks in the craw of abortion absolutists as much as any pro-life law ever enacted. And today marks the 37th anniversary of passage of the law (the “Hyde” is the late pro-life champion, Rep. Henry Hyde), a titanic struggle that represented a major success against federal funding of abortion. Prior to its passage in 1976, the federal Medicaid program paid for 300,000 abortions a year. Conservative estimates are that there are well over one million people are alive today because of the Hyde Amendment. Read More

FREE Flyer: Your Tax Dollars Funding Abortions

Kristan Hawkins, Students for Life:  Tomorrow, October 1st, will mark an historic day in our nation's history, as it will be the first day Americans can sign up for Obamacare. However, you may not know that with Obamacare our tax-payer dollars, money from you and I, will be paying for abortions as well as potentially life-ending, cancer-causing contraception.

Obamacare has a drawn a line in healthcare, and it is a line that we cannot cross. Many folks have been paralyzed with fear because they don’t know what to do about this or how to explain just how bad Obamacare is for the babies, their moms, and for Americans who are pro-life.

Well no longer...I am pleased to let you know that the pro-life generation is taking the lead and, Students for Life of America , along with several of our nation's top pro-life and pro-family organizations, has launched:

On this site, you can download a simple flyer that explains, in layman's terms, just how abortions and contraception are funded in Obamacare.  In addition, you can take action by contacting your House of Representative's Member and Senators and urge them to stand up for Life.   So, please download the below flyer at right away!

Petition to Withdraw HHS Mandate

Bill Donohue, Catholic League explains why the need for a petition:The Catholic community, led by the bishops, has voiced its objections to the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate on several occasions. The Obama administration has made "accommodations" and other revisions, but the fundamental problem remains: the HHS mandate adopts a definition of what constitutes a "religious employer" that is entirely too narrow; and the religious liberty abridgement entailed in this edict represents an unfair burden on Catholic non-profit organizations, and Catholic-owned private businesses.

The amount of time and money spent trying to reconcile the HHS mandate with legitimate First Amendment concerns has been considerable, and without a satisfactory conclusion. Indeed, almost 70 lawsuits have been filed. The only sensible outcome is for the administration to withdraw the mandate altogether.

The problems inherent in ObamaCare are serious. From delaying "out-of-pocket costs" to postponing the employer mandate, it is evident that even those who support this legislation are growing weary. Add to this the more than a thousand waivers that have been granted, and the loss of support by labor unions, and the result is alarming. But none of these factors are as important as the constitutional issues that the HHS mandate presents: even if ObamaCare can be salvaged, the problems posed by the mandate remain.

The petition drive that we are launching today will end September 30, six weeks from today. We will forward the petitions to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on October 1. Please encourage family, friends and members of your parish to sign it. To sign it, click here.

Day 6: 36 babies saved! - 40 Days for Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life::If you need a reason to look forward to Mondays, this is it! Mondays are the days we update all the reports of babies spared from abortion during your 40 Days for Life vigils.

Thus far during this 40 Days for Life campaign, we have reports of ... 36 babies saved ... that we know of!

Here are just a few of those stories:

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Dan noticed a young mom he had recognized from earlier in the day, sitting on the doorsteps. "I asked her if she was going to be OK," he said. She responded, "What did you tell my boyfriend?"

Dan told her, "Probably what I tell them all - go inside and get her out of there! The time is NOW to save your baby's life!"

The woman looked surprised. "Seriously? That's all you said? Somehow, you lit him up. And it worked. He talked me out of it."

"I was dumbstruck; but not for long," Dan said. "I told her about the free help across the street. She said she would check it out."

Abrepo, Ghana - Edward is leading the 40 Days for Life vigil in Ghana. "God has been good to us," he said.

"I received a phone call from a lady around 2:57 am on September 26," he said. The message – "I have decided to keep my pregnancy if there is HOPE!"

"After the first day, one baby saved," Edward said. "Amen!"

St. Louis, Missouri - Brian in St. Louis says one of the prayer volunteers approached a young woman as she was pulling into Planned Parenthood, and offered to take her across the street to Thrive's mobile medical unit.

Patricia, the volunteer - who gives credit to the Holy Spirit for this turnaround - said the woman was surprised but grateful for the alternate opportunity provided by Thrive.

"Sometimes," Brian said, "all it takes are the prayers of some faithful volunteers and a brochure to help women realize that there ARE other options besides the abortion agenda of Planned Parenthood."

Today's devotional from Rev. Paul Stallsworth, president of Lifewatch (United Methodist Church):
Day 6 intention - That knowing the shortness of life, all may value it more deeply.

Scripture - Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. - Ecclesiastes 12:6-7

Reflection by Rev. Paul Stallsworth - God is giver of all life. Short lived or long lived, human lives are lived out in this world. The metaphors for death are many. But their meaning is clear and singular: all will die. Even so, death is not the absolute end. It is not the end of the story. For as certainly as God gave life, at death the life or spirit that God gave returns to God.

By God, we are created. For God, we live our given days. To God, we return at the end of our earthly days. And with God, we live through eternity. Clearly, all along the way, this gracious, loving God is with us. No human life is random or alone. No human life was created without purpose. Not one human life is without destiny.

All human lives, acknowledged or not, are related to God -- from beginning, to end, throughout eternity. Therefore, in this world, all human lives are to be respected and protected, for their lives are signs of God's sovereignty.

Prayer - O God, we too often try to live in ways that ignore our coming death. We forget that our days are numbered by You, that at the end of our days your judgment awaits, that You are the Lord of our destiny.

Help us to repent daily, and then to live each day in joyful obedience. Lead us to live in the light and promise of eternity. Prepare us to live fully and sacrificially. Prepare us to die faithfully and hopefully, so that we might live forever with You. Through Jesus Christ, who has gone before us, we trust and hope and love and pray, Amen.

Abortion: America’s Ultimate Crime Against Women

by Joseph Rossell, Concerned Women for America: It’s a gruesome story that’s been in the news for almost a year now. Outrage was fanned the world over after four Indian men brutally raped and killed a woman during a bus ride in New Delhi. I was angry when I saw the reports, and you probably were, too. Now the four men have been sentenced to death, and while justice was achieved in India, there are countless women here in America for whom it has not yet been accomplished.

Let’s be honest. Thousands of women are being victimized in abortion clinics every day right here in our own home country. Pregnant mothers are left emotionally and physically scarred after visiting any one of countless clinics like ’s, scattered throughout America. It seems that we almost daily hear about additional abortion clinics being investigated or closed in virtually all corners of the country, because of their unsafe, unsanitary, inhumane conditions. You can be sure there are hundreds more not yet discovered, but operating just out of public view. At these “houses of horror,” women endure procedures which are violent and traumatic, not only for the children inside them, but for their own bodies as well.

In a , pro-life advocate Chelsen Vicari spoke with Ashley Granger, a 29-year-old mother who had an abortion when she was a single, confused college student. (Granger is now an outspoken activist for the unborn, widely known for her powerful testimony at the Texas State Capitol when pro-abortionists began chanting, “Hail Satan,” behind her.) She told Vicari that, although everyone in her life at the time said that the abortion would be a painless and easy procedure, the horrible experience still sticks with her to this day. Despite the deceptions of abortion clinic staff, Ashley confirmed that the procedure itself was a violent one: “A gentle suction is what [the abortionists] described it as. Let me tell you, there was nothing gentle about it.” The machine used to suck her child from her body “is twenty times more powerful than your household vacuum. If that’s what they’re calling ‘gentle,’ that’s not gentle.”

As gruesome as the procedure was, Ashley knows from personal experience that the effects of an abortion don’t end after the procedure is complete. At the clinic, Ashley was simply guided to a recliner to deal with the pain, surrounded by other sobbing women who were devastated after the death of their child. That emotional pain and devastation lasted years for Ashley. She admitted that the grief pushed her toward alcohol and substance abuse, and even to attempt suicide three times. Only through the transforming grace of Jesus Christ has she found healing.

Ashley is not alone in what she went through. Indeed, each and every mother who undergoes an abortion suffers profound wounds that are traumatic and long-lasting, even when the abortions go “according to plan.” But there’s no fanfare for the woman who falls victim to such an atrocity. There are no media reports, no protests, and no cries for justice — only another woman marred, her conscience seared, her body maimed, and her life very possibly ended.

Answer me this: How sick is it that we (supposedly “civilized” Americans) are ready to jump to the defense of women a world away but are too often deaf to the cries of the women victimized right here at home? Maybe it’s because these crimes are too close to home and too gruesome for us to think about for long. Maybe it’s because it’s too shameful for us to acknowledge that we’ve ignored them for years on end that we go right on pretending they are not happening at an alarming rate right in our own backyard. And somehow, we’re okay with these lies.

Yet, let me be clear at the risk of stating the obvious. The grievous brutality of abortion will not disappear as long as we who claim to despise barbaric violence against women simply go on ignoring these vile acts right under our noses. Containment and appeasement won’t work. Guised under “women’s health,” the perpetrators will perpetuate their abhorrent work unabated. No matter how hard we hope for “change,” we have to realize that we have become a part of the problem through our own complacency.

Evil is like an open flame. If we let it continue burning, it goes right on spreading and consuming and destroying. To put out the wildfire of abortion and stop its devastating effects on American women, we can’t ignore it and hope it simply goes away. We must actually oppose it for the evil that it is in order for it to be halted. Our only choice is to be honest and admit its existence, to pray fervently against it, and to advocate for meaningful change in our culture and in our laws.

Abortion threatens to ravage our society. It will gut our country, leaving America as a burned-out shell of the moral and virtuous nation we once were, if we go right on overlooking it as we have decade after decade. It doesn’t have to be this way, though. If we as Americans raise our collective voice in opposition to this outrage, we have the power to end this humanitarian crisis occurring day in and day out right here at home.

Day 5: The Sign People - 40 Days For Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life:: Just one item today - but a powerful one. Here's a letter that a young woman left at a 40 Days for Life vigil site - simply addressed "to the sign people." If this doesn't show the importance of your peaceful witness outside the abortion centers ... I don't know what does!

To the sign people
My friend had left me the use of her apartment as she was away ... perfect because it was right where the clinic was!

The next day, I saw you people lining up with signs ... I watched from the window every day and all day you were there! Different folks each time.

I had this idea in my head that abortion picketers were extremists ... no "normal" person would do that sort of thing. Yet you did not look extreme ... more ordinary.

Tuesday was my pre-procedure appointment. Used the wrong entrance and had to walk past you. So what, I thought. Who cares? They don’t know me or where I am going. As I walked past (hurriedly!), my legs felt like they weighed a ton. What was going on? Are these people intimidating me? Do I need to feel ashamed as I walk past? The receptionist told me to "ignore them" when I asked about you.

Every day I watched you. One day I thought for sure no one would be there. Weather forecast was calling for severe winds and rain. There in the afternoon, amid strong winds which were blowing the signs over the head and onto the grass, you stood. Three or four together. All day!

The next day I took a walk and followed you in the direction where everyone seemed to go. It was a church. After everyone left, I went inside and saw all the signs, flyer. Impressive set-up, I thought. They seem organized in their purpose!

On Friday was my scheduled appointment for my procedure. I was suddenly terrified of what was to be. My heart was almost beating out of my chest.

My boyfriend, who had promised to come the day before, did not show up to take me. Said he was tied up and that ultimately it was my choice to have it that day or wait til next week. My choice. But he’s not there to hold my hand! Lots of weighing pros and cons.

Anyhow, I want to let you know that I decided to keep my baby. The boyfriend is still a distance away but maybe he needs time to come around and see the big picture.

The reason I decided to leave you this note is to tell you that what you did was good. I felt I owed it to you for all the days you stood there in hope that others would take notice. I noticed - and in turn it gave me hope that others I know would also care to "stand for me."

It's a crazy world we live in ... but some seem to know how to see the good in it.

Here's today's devotional from Rev. Ben Sheldon, president emeritus of Presbyterians Pro-Life...

Day 5 intention - May the truth of the final judgment shape our thoughts, priorities, and choices here on earth.

Scripture - The King will answer and say to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." -- Matthew 25:31-46

Reflection by Rev. Ben Sheldon - Caring for others is not optional.

Jesus' picture of the final judgment concludes with this sobering word: the wicked, who failed to care for others in their various needs (e.g., the hungry, the thirsty, the aliens, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned) will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous who did seek to meet those needs will end up with him, enjoying eternal life.

We know that this was no parable! Jesus has given us fair warning! Everything in God's Word points to the truth that compassionate concern and practical care for all people, especially for the poor, the destitute, the weak and needy is required of us, if indeed we hope to escape the punishment of the fire of hell.

And who are the poor and needy, if not helpless, unborn babies, as well as the aged and infirm at the other end of life? Surely the "least of these" embraces not only those at both ends of the continuum of life, but all others in between.

Just how we, as Christ's true followers, respond to his admonition "inasmuch as you did it to the least of these, you did it to me" will determine whether we enjoy eternal bliss in his presence or the bleak and dreadful reality of eternal punishment in hell. Nothing in God's Word could be clearer!

Prayer - Gracious and merciful Father, we gladly embrace your Word that counsels us to care for the least of your children, and we renew our dedication to defending the unborn and all whose right to life is compromised by our godless society's selfish lack of concern. Free us from our own failures and sins so that we will be truly pro-life in every area of our lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Day 4: Off and Running - 40 Days For Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life:: Today, I speak at the Central California Walk for Life -- an event that 40 Days for Life volunteers helped organize. More than 1,000 people are expected to pray at an abortion facility and then march. I'm looking forward to a very inspiring day!

I'm turning the rest of today's report over to our national director, David Bereit, as he describes his whirlwind visits across two Southern states in the first 24 hours of this campaign:

Birmingham, Alabama
Upon arriving in Birmingham, I met with numerous local pro-life leaders, as well as EWTN radio show hosts Jim and Joy Pinto, at a local pregnancy center. Then we all headed out to join the big crowd of excited volunteers at the local 40 Days for Life kickoff event.

It was raining until minutes before the event, when the rain stopped and the sky cleared. Many clergy were in attendance, including the retired Catholic bishop of Birmingham, David Foley, as well as Charismatic Episcopal Church Bishop Chuck Pierce.

The event was a top story on the local television news (see video of news story).

Tuscaloosa, Alabama
After the rally, I drove an hour to Tuscaloosa, where a Knights of Columbus hall was packed with local pro-lifers and students from the University of Alabama for breakfast and to kick off their 40 Days for Life campaign -- which is being directed by a dynamic college student named Claire.

Montgomery, Alabama
Next, I drove two hours to Montgomery, where a large group from numerous different churches gathered across the street from a facility that has been aborting children in Alabama's capital city for 30 years. It was amazing to meet local volunteers from many different faith traditions all working together for a common cause!

Columbus, Georgia
From Montgomery, I drove 90 minutes and across the state line to Columbus, Georgia -- also in a different time zone! I prayed with the group of volunteers and shared encouraging stories of some of the earliest victories that have already been happening during this campaign.

Atlanta, Georgia
Then it was a two-hour drive to Atlanta, where I met with many local and state pro-life leaders for a brief dinner before going out to a large kickoff rally outside a notorious late-term abortion center.

Once again, I was blessed to see tremendous diversity at this event -- people from different churches, races and backgrounds, all standing arm in arm to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves."

Marietta, Georgia
The day ended with a 30-minute drive to Marietta, a suburb of Atlanta, where the 40 Days for Life vigil is being held outside an office park that houses a large abortion business.

More than 100 joyful people were gathered in the dark along the very busy road with candles. Nearly half of them were Spanish speaking! Fortunately, the local leader and others were able to translate the message of hope to all attendees.

In just the first 24 hours of this campaign, I drove 408 miles with stops in 6 cities to meet hundreds of amazing people with ONE focused mission -- ending abortion. I have GREAT hope for our future!

Thanks to David Bereit for all that good news!

Here's today's devotional from Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life...

Day 4 intention - We ask God that we may understand the concept of justice, as a gift he gives and as a responsibility that shapes our work.

Scripture - Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! -- Amos 5:24

Reflection - Justice, a key theme of the Scriptures, is something God does and that we too must do.

When God intervenes to save his people when they are helpless and in slavery in Egypt, he "does justice." He manifested his justice in the plagues that were sent upon Egypt, whereby Pharaoh was convinced that he must let the people go. Justice is manifested as, in awe and wonder, God's people see the Red Sea open before them, allow them to pass without even getting their feet wet, and then close again to drown their powerful enemies.

God is a God of Justice; he rescues us when we cannot save ourselves. His justice, above all, is seen in Jesus Christ, who, when we could not save ourselves, rescued us from the kingdom of sin, Satan, death, and hell. The mighty work of Christ on the cross and in the resurrection is the perfect manifestation of God as the God of justice.

We, then, are to be the people of justice; we are to "do justice" by intervening to save the helpless in the name and by the power of the God who saves us who are helpless ourselves. That's why we have a pro-life movement; that's why we have a 40 Days for Life Campaign; that's why saving the unborn is our business.

Prayer - God of Justice, you heard the cry of your people when they were being oppressed in Egypt, and you proved yourself to be the God of justice, who rescues the helpless. You likewise rescued us from the kingdom of darkness, and brought us into the Kingdom of your Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who saves us from the power of Satan, sin, death, and hell.

Make us people of justice, ready to intervene to save the helpless. Indeed, as your prophets have announced, let justice roll on like a mighty river, to save all who are in need, especially the unborn. We pray through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Senate Democrats Block Republicans’ Effort to Defund Pro-Abortion Obamacare With the Senate voting 54-44 on a party-line vote today, Senate Democrats blocked an effort by Republicans to de-fund the Obamacare legislation that pro-life groups oppose because it will fund abortions and presents rationing concerns. P has more on the vote: The Democratic-led Senate has blocked an effort to strip money from the president’s health care law. The party-line, 54-44 vote clears the last obstacle to Senate approval of a measures aimed at preventing a government shutdown on Tuesday. Read More

Abortion Activists Sue to Stop Pro-Life Texas Law Closing Abortion Clinics Leading abortion advocacy groups today filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the pro-life law Texas passed over Wendy Davis’ infamous objections that bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. However, abortion advocates are not challenging the abortion ban – they are going after the abortion facility regulations responsible for closing some abortion clinics already and potentially closing a more. Pro-Life Leaders Pledge: We Will Not Obey Obamacare’s Abortion Funding, HHS Mandate For several months now, prominent pro-life leaders have been meeting to discuss what action must be taken when, on October 1, 2013, the Exchanges open and a large majority of health insurance policies are found to contain direct or indirect funding for abortion. Through long meetings and meticulous discussion, a coalition of pro-life leaders has developed a unified response to the Affordable Care Act’s relentless endeavors to guarantee funding for abortion through everything from individual citizens to private businesses and non-profit organizations – with absolutely no regard to any religious liberty or conscientious objections. Abortionist: We Invite Moms to Hold Their Babies After Abortions A recent interview with late-term abortionist Dr. Susan Robinson has drawn significant attention for some of the ways Robinson attempts to humanize the process of destroying the lives of unborn children in late-term abortions. Although surveys show women frequently regret their abortions and face a litany of medical and mental health problems following an abortion, Robinson attempts to make women feel better about their decision in a sick and twisted sort of way. Obamacare Insurance Plans Will Limit Your Hospital and Specialist Choices Starting Tuesday, October 1, people around the country will begin enrolling in “exchanges” mandated by the Obama Health Care Law, choosing their health insurance for 2014. When they do so, however, many will find their alternatives limited to cut-rate plans that allow them to see only narrow groups of health care providers that exclude the best specialists and health care centers. Inside the Mind of Abortionist and Convicted Murderer Kermit Gosnell I never wrote this, but after abortionist Kermit Gosnell was sentenced I KNEW we had not heard the last of a man convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter. Why? Simply because I had read the interview he had given March 22, 2010, to David Gambacorta of the Philadelphia Daily News long before the trial began (“DOCTOR FROM HELL . . . OR GODSEND?”), the excusatory comments of Jack McMahon, his defense attorney during and after the trial, and what the Grand Jury report said about a man who operated a “House of Horrors.” So why would that add up to a second act for a man who had been convicted of murdering three babies he’d deliberated aborted alive and then severed their spinal cords and whose untrained, uneducated staff had over-medicated a 41-year-old refugee? Because Gosnell—hard as this is to believe, let alone stomach—clearly sees himself as a victim. Indeed he sees himself as a misunderstood…hero. Read More

Taxpayers Will Be Subsidizing Up To 111,500 Abortions Per Year!

Marjorie Dannenfelser, President, Susan B. Anthony List: Yesterday, our education and research arm, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, put out a ground-breaking new analysis that shows that under the new Obamacare exchanges, taxpayers will be subsidizing up to 111,500 abortions per year!

Can you imagine?

Stephanie, that means you and I will be complicit in the deaths of more than one hundred thousand children – in just a single year – through our tax dollars.

And with just five days until the largest expansion of taxpayer funded abortion since Roe v. Wade is set to take effect . . .

For the last four years, your SBA has List fought tirelessly to expose the truth that Obamacare opens the floodgates of taxpayer funded abortion.

We’ve done radio, television, and online ads. We've done bus tours and held press conferences as well as countless meetings with congressional staffers to ensure Americans understand how Obamacare will hasten the deaths of an untold number of American babies – at taxpayer expense.

We’ve made so much noise about this that, as you know, now ex-Congressman Steve Driehaus even sued us in federal court after we exposed his Obamacare vote as one FOR taxpayer funding of abortion.

I can’t begin to tally up the staff time and effort that’s gone into fighting that lawsuit and also towards educating Americans about the grave reality of this situation.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute team spent hours researching and analyzing the new Obamacare law to figure out just exactly how it works. It is clear that through the Multi-State Plans alone – Americans will be complicit in the deaths of thousands of unborn children each year through their tax dollars.

Not to mention the unfair, unconstitutional, HHS abortion-inducing drug mandate that forces employers of faith and conscience to defy their deeply held beliefs about protecting life.

In the Senate, one of our allies Sen. Ted Cruz spent over 20 hours fighting against Obamacare. He and our other pro-life stalwarts took to the floor of the US Senate making the case against Obamacare.

Many of our allies here in Washington are willing to fight to stop Obamacare in order to protect the unborn and defend our conscience rights.

As we make this stand against Obamacare . . . We’ve got to amplify our voice and reach even more Americans in order to expose the truth.

We must stop this taxpayer funding of abortion on demand by stopping the exchanges from going into effect.

DAY 3: I’m hooked - 40 Days For Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA I just wrapped up a great visit to Pittsburgh, helping kick off their 40 Days for Life campaign. Here I am at the opening event with Nikki Bruni, the local 40 Days for Life coordinator.

Around 125 people turned out to hear the great praise-and-worship band, Intent … along with Georgette Forney, co-founder the of Silent No More Awareness group. The vigil location is on a busy downtown street.

If you’ve never had a chance to actually pray at a 40 Days for Life vigil — here’s your invitation! The first step is to find the nearest location.

And if you need a bit of encouragement, here’s one first-time prayer volunteer who’s now energized and ready to do even more!

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA “I’m hooked!” was the reaction of a young mom who had just finished her first-ever prayer hours at the 40 Days for Life vigil in Pensacola.

“I feel like I’m actually doing something to end abortion,” she added. “It’s great to do something … instead of just talking about abortion.”

She said she would commit to as many days of prayer at the abortion center as possible.

ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY Ethel tells me the first 40 Days for Life campaign in the Atlantic City area is off to a great start — and the blessings are obvious, even when the abortion facility is closed.

“We had so many cars and trucks beeping and waving,” she said. There was also the young woman who drove up to ask for help.

“She was 9 weeks pregnant and considering and abortion,” Ethel explained. The volunteers offered God’s love — and information about how she could find assistance. The woman said she would return for more prayer … but she had to get home, where she has four other children.

Please keep this woman — and the many others just like her — in your prayers.

Here’s the link to today’s devotional.

Little Sisters of the Poor Sue the Administration

by Bethany Monk: An International Roman Catholic organization dedicated to serving the elderly poor is fighting a government mandate requiring most businesses and nonprofits to offer potential-abortion inducing drugs in their employee health plans.

Little Sisters of the Poor, based in Baltimore, Md., filed a lawsuit against the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate on Wednesday. The organization operates homes in 31 countries providing care for more than 13,000 people in need. Thirty of these homes are in the United States.

"Like all of the Little Sisters, I have vowed to God and the Roman Catholic Church that I will treat all life as valuable, and have dedicated my life to that work," said Sister Loraine Marie. "We cannot violate our vows by participating in the government's program to provide access to abortion-inducing drugs."

The Obama administration required for-profit businesses to comply with the Health and Human Services mandate by August 2012. Nonprofits have a “safe harbor” until Jan. 1. Only churches are exempt.

More than 70 lawsuits are in play.

Focus on the Family Judicial Analyst Bruce Hausknecht said many of those pushing for the HHS mandate have ties to abortion industry.

“The ‘preventive services’ provisions of the HHS mandate, of course, came from the ‘recommendations’ of the Institute of Medicine, a medical group that advises the government on such matters,” he explained. “Several members of the Institute of Medicine panel involved in the HHS mandate recommendations, however, have ties to the abortion industry. These abortion advocates continue to push the twisted notion that abortion itself is healthcare, and will continue to fight for their end goal of complete taxpayer funding of abortion which, not coincidentally, will fill their financial coffers.”

The Little Sisters organization is joined in the suit by its health providers, as well as hundreds of other Catholic ministries. This is first lawsuit of its kind, because it is a class-action suit and it’s the first filed on behalf of health benefits providers who cannot comply with the mandate.

Mark Rienzi, senior counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, who is representing the nonprofit, said, “the Little Sisters just want to take care of the elderly poor without being forced to violate the faith that animates their work.”

TAKE ACTION: Urge President Obama to stop the Health and Human Services (HHS) Mandate requiring businesses provide contraceptives and possible abortion-inducing drugs to their employees under their respective insurance plans.

Obamacare State Exchanges May Fund 111,500 Abortions a Year With Your Money On January 1, 2014 state health exchanges, or the federal or “partnership” versions that will operate in their stead in a narrow majority of states, are required by law to be up and running. By October 1, 2013 consumers are supposed to be able to begin researching and comparing insurance options in these exchanges. Delays in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act are evident in nearly all areas of the law, including a feature called “multi-state plans” (MSPs) that are designed to be phased in over a four-year period for every state in the Union. Mom Takes Pregnant Daughter for Abortion After Stepfather Impregnates Her LifeNews has spent almost 20 years chronicling how the abortion industry doesn’t offer any protection for young girls who are victims of statutory rape. Most recently, an abortion practitioner in Indiana was caught waiting months after he did an abortion on a young girl who was a victim of statutory rape before finally reporting it to the state. Now, an abortion clinic in New York apparently did an abortion on the baby of another rape victim, covering up the crime and evidence authorities may use to prosecute the perpetrator. Read More

Abortion Activist Wendy Davis Will Run for Governor in Texas The worst-kept secret in politics has been confirmed, as sources say today that pro-abortion activist Wendy Davis will run for governor in Texas. But Politico announced today that Davis will mount a campaign. Read More

Pro-Life Members of Congress Want Obamacare Abortion Funding Stopped Congressman Joe Pitts has sent a letter to Speaker Boehner on behalf of dozens of colleagues to stop the funding and promotion of abortion in Obamacare. Yesterday Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) sent a letter signed by 72 Members of Congress to Speaker Boehner. The letter asks Speaker Boehner to act in either the FY14 Continuing Resolution or legislation to raise the debt limit to prevent funding for insurance plans that include abortion under the new health care law, and to stop First Amendment violations with respect to the HHS Mandate. 83 Abortion Clinic Workers Have Quit During 40 Days for Life, Pro-Lifers Pray for More Thus far, we’ve seen 83 abortion facility employees have conversions and leave their jobs during 40 Days for Life campaigns. Fashion Photographer Uses Photos to Show Beauty of People With Genetic Differences Images have a transformative power. Images convey ideas in ways words can only envy. Images can change perceptions and encourage action. We can describe to someone the scientific facts of the unborn child’s development but to show them a 4-D ultrasound photo of that child will prove to be even more influential. As a fashion photographer, Rick Guidotti (left) understood the power of images. Guidotti worked in New York City, Paris and Milan with high-profile clients like Yves St. Laurent, Revlon, L’Oreal, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and GQ. DAY 2: Pray for the workers - 40 Days For Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: Thus far, we’ve seen 83 abortion facility employees have conversions and leave their jobs during 40 Days for Life campaigns.

You heard from two of them — who not only left but then joined the vigil — in yesterday's the video.

I can’t say where, of course … but we've heard that abortion workers have already reached out to prayer volunteers on Day 1 so keep them in your prayers!

For these 40 days, we pray for the babies, the men and women seeking abortion — and yes — the workers in the abortion centers. Those prayers will go on day or night … rain or shine … on four continents.

Columbia, Missouri
The darkness of the night provided a solemn setting for the opening candlelight vigil in Columbia.

This location is a Planned Parenthood center that once offered abortions — but has not been able to keep an abortionist on staff. There have been no abortions here for 15 months. Prayer volunteers are hoping to see the day when this facility goes out of business.

White Plains, New York
It was sunny for the kickoff rally in White Plains. “We had a good turnout,” said Gerald. “Praise God!”

He noted with sadness that 2,257 abortions took place in the area in 2011, the most recent year reported. But “there is some good news here … the abortion numbers are declining year over year.”

Port Charlotte, Florida
It was not so sunny in Port Charlotte, where their 40 Days for Life campaign started out in the rain. They’ve had lots of rain — even flooding lately.

But after the vigil began, the rain was replaced by a rainbow. “Praise God for the wonderful sign,” said Stephanie in Port Charlotte.

Here's today's devotional from Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life:

Day 2 intention - Pray for those who work in the abortion industry, and for those who have repented of committing abortions and have resolved to defend life.

Scripture - Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man." -- Luke 23:46-47

Reflection - "Those of us who have participated in the killing of unborn children are the Centurions of today. We have dropped our swords against the unborn child. Now we must recognize the depth of our guilt and deal with the ramifications... To revitalize our humanity we need to forgive and be forgiven, to reconcile and be healed."

These words come from a brochure of the Society of Centurions, an organization for former abortion providers. These words convey in a beautiful and moving way what is happening across the nation as hundreds of abortionists and their staff members experience repentance, conversion, and healing.

How does this conversion begin? Dr. Philip Ney writes, "The factors that changed their opinion on performing abortions, in the following order of frequency, were: evidence of the infant's humanity, a spiritual experience, personal distress, evidence of the mother's distress, scientific articles, being accepted as a person, a personal relationship with a pro-lifer, pro-life pickets." (The Centurion's Pathway, p. 77).

The journey is not easy. But the Jesus who heals us calls us to face the truth of what we've done, make restitution where possible, and engage in the hard work of mending relationships. Let's pray for the Centurions; may their numbers increase!

Prayer - Lord, we thank you for those who have repented of committing abortions and have resolved to defend life. We too repent and resolve.

We repent of every instance in which fear has made us silent when we should have spoken. We repent of the ongoing bloodshed in our land, and for thinking that we can deprive the unborn of protection but keep it for ourselves.

We resolve that we will advance the cause of righteous candidates for public office, and that we will be more afraid of offending you by our silence than of offending others by our speech. We resolve that we will proclaim your name to the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sportscaster Fired for Marriage Beliefs

Craig James
by Kim Trobee, CitizenLink: Former NFL running back and one-time senatorial candidate Craig James was fired Sept. 1 from Fox Sports Southwest for comments he made about marriage. In 2012, James was a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Ted Cruz. During a debate, James said this:

Same-sex marriage, if someone chooses to do that, that’s them. God’s going to judge each one of us in this room for our actions, but in that case right there, they’re going to have to answer to the Lord for their actions.

James agreed to join the Fox College Saturday team and his first day on-air was Aug. 31. He was fired the next day.

Despite a stellar career working for ESPN, ABC and CBS, Fox sports representatives told The Dallas Morning News: “We just asked ourselves how Craig’s statements would play in our human resources department. He couldn’t say those things here.”

James issued a statement this week.
I was shocked that my personal beliefs were not only the reason for Fox Sports firing me, but I was completely floored when I read stories quoting Fox Sports representatives essentially saying that people of faith are banned from working at Fox Sports. I have worked in broadcasting for 24 years and have always treated my colleagues with respect and dignity regardless of their background or personal beliefs. I have never discussed my faith while broadcasting, and it has never been an issue until now.Liberty Institute sent a letter to Fox Sports Southwest demanding that it reinstate James immediately or legal proceedings will begin. Attorney Jeff Mateer called the firing a mistake.

“To think that a national entertainment organization would take a view that would preclude people who hold to traditional religious beliefs, is truly outrageous,” he said. “We want them to wake up and realize that we live in the United States of America in which we respect and honor people of religious belief and that you cannot take adverse employment action based upon folks’ religious beliefs.”

TAKE ACTION - Please contact Fox Sports VP of Communications Dan Bell and tell him to restore religious liberty and return Craig James to the airwaves.

Media Hailed Wendy Davis’ Abortion Filibuster as Heroic, But Attack Ted Cruz The media treatment of Ted Cruz and his anti-Obamacare filibuster is a significant contrast from the way it handled the filibuster Texas lawmaker Wendy Davis mounted to keep abortions legal in Texas up tot he day of birth. Sen. Ted Cruz, also from Texas, pulled an all-nighter in the U.S. Senate as he advocated for the defunding of Obamacare. Wearing black tennis shoes for comfort in the same way Davis sported pink sneakers, the Texas senator started speaking at 2:41 p.m. on Tuesday and has continued for almost 20 hours as of this writing. 11 Things “Pro-Choicers” Don’t Get About Abortion

1) It’s not about choice; it’s about abortion. I mean, really, what “choice” are we talking about here? The “choice” to what? We’re not debating the “choice” to keep your child and raise him yourself. We’re not arguing over adoption, either. The sole thing we have a difference on is abortion. That’s what we’re debating here. So let’s get real. You’re either pro-abortion or you’re pro-life. If you support the “choice” to abort, then you are pro-abortion. And if you have a hard time with that, maybe you should reconsider your beliefs… Read More

Media Politics and the Pope

Pope Francis with media
Bill Donohue, Catholic League comments on media coverage of Pope Francis.Every sentient human being knows about the published reflections that Pope Francis offered last week on a variety of subjects. But few know about other matters he recently addressed, and that is because the media are not happy with his decisions. Here are four examples.
  • In a homily given on September 16, the pope said "a good Catholic meddles in politics."
  • In his published interview released September 19, the pope spoke against priests who are "too lax." By that he meant, "[T]he loose minister washes his hands by simply saying, 'This is not a sin,' or something like that."
  • On September 20, he denounced abortion as part of our "throwaway culture."
  • On September 21, one Australian newspaper reported that a heretical priest, Greg Reynolds, was excommunicated by the Vatican for his activism on behalf of women priests and gay marriage.
There was a virtual blackout on the pope's homily urging Catholics to meddle in politics. Very few mentioned that in his well-publicized interview he cited lax priests for denying the existence of sin. His comments on abortion received some coverage, but not much: only ABC "World News Tonight" mentioned it among the big broadcasters. Aside from a few Catholic and gay blogs, news about the dissident Australian priest being excommunicated received almost zero coverage.

Most of those who work in the elite media are pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage. Not all are biased, but too many are. They have a vested ideological interest in flagging stories about the pope that may gin up the left and alienate conservatives; they also have a political interest in burying stories that have the opposite effect.

The media need a Catholic whistle-blower for its papal coverage. We gladly accept the invitation.

Major Study Concludes Planned Parenthood 'Services' Do Not Reduce Teen Pregnancy

Jim Sedlak, American Life League: Contrary to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America public relations and lobbying message, there is no correlation with PPFA community presence and reduced teen pregnancy. In contrast, teen pregnancies actually decreased with the absence of PPFA. So concludes a major meta-study released by American Life League, the nation's oldest pro-life Catholic education and advocacy group.

"We know that the pro-abortion first-response will be 'Consider the source.' But American Life League is not the source; the source is the official records of 16 counties within the Texas panhandle," said Rita Diller, national director of ALL's STOPP International project. "From 1994 through 2010, Planned Parenthood facilities in these counties went from 19 to zero. In the same period, the teen pregnancy rate dropped almost in half, from 43.6 per 1,000 to 24.1 per thousand, and the population of teen girls aged 13-17 remained stable. Those aren't our numbers; those are government numbers."

Diller says the longitudinal analysis, included in the full report, Planned Parenthood Federation of America: A 5-Part Analysis of Business Practices, Community Outcomes, and Taxpayer Funding, is the first of its kind because, until now, the one variable, the presence of Planned Parenthood, could not be studied in isolation.

"People don't realize that Planned Parenthood must work hard to replace the 43 percent of its customers it loses each year," added Diller. "It normally does this by promoting sexual promiscuity to teens. This study suggests that, when Planned Parenthood leaves, teens are more likely to embrace chastity."

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life: 40 Days for Life has officially begun in 306 cities across America and around the globe!

I just spoke at a 40 Days for Life kickoff event in California, David Bereit, our national director, helped get things started in Birmingham, Alabama, Steve Karlen, our North American outreach director spoke at the Dallas, Texas kickoff event, and Robert Colquhoun, our international outreach director, is helping to launch campaigns in London.

To celebrate the start of this campaign, here's a BRAND-NEW short video that shows what God is accomplishing through 40 Days for Life -- and how YOU can make a lifesaving impact over these 40 days ...
In the video, you'll meet people whose lives have been forever changed ... thanks to faithful 40 Days for Life volunteers.

You'll hear from former Planned Parenthood managers -- and a woman who chose life for her baby, simply because people were outside the abortion center praying for her ... and her child.

Here's today's devotional from David Brandao, the communications director for 40 Days for Life...

Day 1 intention - That we may use these 40 Days for Life to plead for God's mercy and grace upon all those involved in the sin of abortion.

Scripture - Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Gather the people, notify the congregation. Assemble the elders; gather the children and the infants at the breast... Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, "Spare, O Lord, your people." -- Joel 2:15-17

Reflection - The toll of abortion cannot be measured. We hear estimates of almost 50 million innocent victims, but that's only one aspect of the harm that has unfolded in abortion's wake. There are also the mothers and fathers of these millions, as well as the grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins. Unborn lives destroyed. Lives of the living shattered.

It's overwhelming and depressing, but even in the midst of such unfathomable darkness, the church teaches us to have hope. Yes, it was indeed Calvary that followed Christ's 40 days in the desert, but without Calvary there would have been no Resurrection -- His victory over death that opened the gates of heaven to those who believe in and follow Him.

The psalmist encourages us to go humbly before God as we seek His will: "A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me... Give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me... O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise" (Psalm 51:12, 14, 17).

We are called to be God's messengers; or as the Apostle Paul told the Corinthians: "We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20).

That is the true message to all we encounter at the abortion centers and in our communities who have been deceived by the Culture of Death. We don't bring condemnation; we bring God's good news.

Prayer - Lord, we ask for the strength, courage, wisdom, determination and stamina to carry out this mission according to Your will.

Guide us, we pray, as we go forth and proclaim Your truth, always doing so with a spirit of love and compassion, as was demonstrated to us by Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, Amen.

Closing Abortion Clinics

Kerby Anderson
by Kerby Anderson, Point of View: In the last few weeks there have been a number of articles documenting that abortion clinics are closing at a record rate. Pro-life leaders are applauding the impact various pro-life laws in various states are having. Predictably, the Huffington Post was warning pro-choice advocates of the “dramatic toll” recent state laws are having on these clinics.

Tom Strode with the Baptist Press illustrated this dramatic reversal by telling the story of Abby Johnson. She was the director of a Planned Parenthood center in Bryan, Texas. She is now celebrating that the clinic she left is now closing down. She calls it the “biggest personal victory of my life.” She has come full circle from running the facility to advocating its closure to now seeing it close its doors.

The best estimate is there have been about 44 clinics this year that shut down. This includes 42 clinics that provide surgical abortions and two others that offer chemical abortion by drugs. To put this number in perspective, last year 25 surgical clinics closed down, and 30 closed the year before.

The clinics that are closing are not just the small, cash-strapped abortion centers. The number one abortion provider in Virginia closed down this summer. It shut down after state and local governments enacted regulations the abortion provider appeared unable to meet.

These new state laws regulating abortion clinics are a major reason many of them are closing down. But new state laws are not the only reason for these closures. Overall there has been a decline in the abortion rate and an upswing in the pro-life perspective, especially among the young. Some clinics have closed down because an abortion doctor retired and there was no one to take his or her place.

I might also mention that more clinic closings are likely in the future. States like Alabama, North Carolina, and Texas have passed abortion restriction laws that will add to the increasing list of abortion clinics closing their doors. These are great pro-life victories. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

Study: Planned Parenthood Health Services at Lowest Point Since 2006 While Tax $ Up 78% The Planned Parenthood abortion business says it repeatedly: it’s about women’s health care not abortion. The abortion business will have much to explain following a new study released today by American Life League. For years, conservatives and pro-life groups have fought public tax dollars going to Planned Parenthood because it is primarily an abortion business and the new study backs up that claim. The meta-study by American Life League shows that the total healthcare services delivered by Planned Parenthood have reached their lowest point since 2006, while taxpayer funding has increased 78 percent over the past six years.
