Family Gets Relief From Obamacare’s Mandatory ‘Abortion Fee,’ but Pro-Lifers Aren’t Rejoicing Just Yet

by Kelsey Harkness, The Daily Signal: A pro-life family won’t be forced by Obamacare to pay for others’ abortions through a “secret fee” after all.

Barth and Abbie Bracy, who have four children, filed a lawsuit earlier this year against government officials, arguing that they failed to offer health insurance plans that didn’t cover elective abortions.

The Connecticut couple voluntarily dismissed their suit against federal and state officials after the state added options under Obamacare that, for the first time in Connecticut, will not require participants to pay for others’ abortions.

“While we are pleased that Connecticut families will now have a choice to avoid paying this abortion surcharge, it is a shame that other families won’t have that choice, and that most Americans don’t even know that they must pay this secret fee,” said Casey Mattox, a senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, the organization that represented the Bracys.

That “secret fee” was uncovered in a Sept. 15 report by the Government Accountability Office, which found that more than 1,000 Obamacare plans cover abortion while remaining eligible for tax subsidies.

Federal law forbids taxpayer subsidies for elective abortions. The Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, requires every plan that covers elective abortions to collect a separate fee used exclusively to pay for those abortions. That requirement was the government’s attempt to prevent tax dollars, as Obama promised, from directly funding abortion.

The GAO report found that many insurers were failing to collect from policyholders the required separate payment for abortion coverage.

“The severe lack of transparency in Obamacare plans continues to leave many consumers unaware that they could be signing up for a plan that includes abortion coverage,” said Sarah Torre, a policy analyst at The Heritage Foundation who closely follows the issue of Obamacare and abortion. Torre added:
Worse, the health care law requires that insurance companies offering elective abortion coverage collect a separate premium of at least $12 a year from individuals to cover the procedures. No one should be forced to pay a hidden surcharge that’s used to pay for others’ abortions. After the Bracys’ insurance company dropped them from their private plan, they discovered that Connecticut offered no health insurance options for citizens who object to paying for abortions, forcing them to violate their pro-life, religious beliefs.

Although Connecticut added plans acceptable to the Bracys to its online insurance marketplace under Obamacare, four other states highlighted in the GAO report have yet to offer plans that don’t include abortion coverage. That leaves pro-life families in Rhode Island, New Jersey, Vermont and Hawaii to face situations similar to that of the Bracys.

The Bracys, who are Catholic, see themselves as an example of Americans who feel deceived by Obama, who back in 2009 promised: “[U]nder our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.”

Barth Bracy works as executive director of Rhode Island Right to Life, a 45-minute commute from the family’s home in Dayville, Conn.

He met his wife Abbie during a 15-year stint in the Philippines as a missionary. Today he serves as a deacon at the family’s local church.

“God is the center of our individual and family lives,” Bracy told The Daily Signal in an earlier interview regarding the family’s pro-life views and opposition to the abortion surcharge.

To truly protect individuals and families, Heritage’s Torre said, Congress should repeal Obamacare and move forward with “real health care reform.” She said:
Americans deserve a health care system that increases access, decreases costs and allows individuals and families to choose health care without subsidizing life-ending procedures. To address remaining issues of transparency in Obamacare’s 2015 open enrollment period, which began Nov. 15, the Family Research Council teamed up with the Charlotte Lozier Institute to make information about abortion coverage clearly available in this state-by-state map.

Victory! Judge restores Jesus Prayers to Southern State

Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Praying In Jesus Name: "A federal district court lifted its order against the prayer policy of Forsyth County, North Carolina, Thursday in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision affirming prayer before public meetings in Town of Greece v. Galloway," reports Charisma News.

"After winning that lawsuit in May, Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing Forsyth County, North Carolina, asked the district court to lift its order against the county's prayer policy. The order required the county to censor the way people pray to ensure only generic prayers are offered at public meetings."

"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit upheld the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina's order in Joyner v. Forsyth County in 2011.

"Although the Supreme Court declined to review the case, it upheld a similar policy from the town of Greece, New York, on May 5 and affirmed that Americans are free to pray according to their own beliefs at public meetings. That cleared the way for uncensored prayers to resume in Forsyth County."

PRAISE GOD!  The 4th Circuit was the other bad regional decision that banned the word Jesus as illegal speech, specifically in Fosyth County.  Now our victory at the Supreme Court is trickling down to all 50 states, restoring freedom to pray "in Jesus' name" in public, after 8 years of battle by our ministry.  But we're not done...

Court Won’t Protect Will of South Carolina Voters

by Kim Trobee, CitizenLink: By refusing to step in, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for same-sex marriage licenses to be issued in South Carolina. That’s despite overwhelming support for the state constitutional amendment that defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson released a statement after the high court’s announcement on Thursday.

“Despite today’s refusal to grant our motion,” he wrote, “the U.S. Supreme Court has not yet resolved conflicting rulings by federal appeals courts on the issue of same sex marriage. When the U.S. Supreme Court decides to consider the case, our office will be supporting the position of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is more consistent with South Carolina State law, which upholds the unique status of traditional marriage.”

Oran Smith with Palmetto Family Council, one of CitizenLink’s 38 associated family policy councils, called it “bad for our democracy.”

“Once again, we have law created by activist judges, and I just don’t think that’s what our Founding Fathers intended,” he said. “I don’t think that they would ever have thought that marriage and domestic relations were a matter for the federal government. South Carolina has a long history of being a fighter for the states and for federalism. It’s very disappointing and, I think, very short-sighted on the part of the judiciary.”

U.S. Judge Richard Gergel ruled that certain issues go beyond voting by the legislature and the people.

“Of course, he was referring to our Bill of Rights,” Smith said, “rights that are annunciated there in the first 10 amendments to our Constitution. He tried to shoehorn in same-sex marriage to a level of the Bill of Rights. That’s not good law, and it’s certainly not good government.”

It’s only a matter of time before the Supreme Court takes up the issue. Smith said they could have avoided confusion by being clearer in their recent ruling.

“The Windsor decision last summer was a real travesty,” he said, “not just because it was in the direction of same-sex marriage, but it sent such conflicting messages. In one place it said marriage was a matter for the states, but in another place it seemed to indicate that marriage was a civil right. It seems that the judiciary are putting their finger to the wind to decide what to do, and that’s dangerous for judges, because, they’re not elected.”

Abortion in Obamacare Website Now Active: Don't Buy Abortion Insurance

Chuck Donovan, President, Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI): CLI promised you we would share more information on our new resource website, so that you can check whether a health insurance plan offered under Obamacare covers elective abortion. Good news – the site JUST went live.

Check out to see what our team of researchers at Charlotte Lozier Institute and Family Research Council has discovered about health plans in your state marketplace.

Remember – the Obama administration and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have failed to provide you with transparency when it comes to abortion funding in Obamacare. In order to unearth this abortion coverage information, we had to search high and low, contacting insurance companies and state exchanges by phone, e-mail, and live chat. We expect more challenges, but the pursuit of truth is worth it.

YOU can help too. Aside from our research, you can contact us through if you have access to plan documents in your state that may not be publicly available. Unlike Jonathan Gruber, a key mind behind Obamacare, CLI considers you anything but “stupid.”

Our team won’t sit by while the government persists in covering up this ugly reality of abortion funding in Obamacare, and I know you won’t either. You’ve heard the saying: “Knowledge is power.” Please share this information with your family and friends who are likewise concerned to stay away from abortion plans.

With persistence, we can ensure that elective abortion coverage is ultimately removed altogether from health insurance plans in Obamacare.

Abortion and Human Trafficking

by Mike Adams, Author’s note: The following is an actual letter I sent to my pastor. If your church is involved in the fight against human trafficking but silent on the issue of abortion then, please, feel free to plagiarize this letter and send it to your pastor. My sole motivation in republishing this letter is to help those who wish to approach their pastors on this issue but have difficultly framing the issue in a respectful manner.

Mike, it is good news to hear that our church getting involved in the issue of human trafficking, which is evil for one very simple and obvious reason: it justifies treating people as commodities by first denying their humanity. In that sense it is analytically indistinguishable from abortion.

For years, doctors have denied the humanity of the unborn so they can profit from the practice of performing abortions. Many of those who seek abortions on the basis of financial considerations share the same moral culpability. However, some are just scared and alone and honestly believe they cannot afford to have a child. Those are the people our church should be helping. To my knowledge, we are not.

We need to ask ourselves why we are openly boasting of our efforts to end human trafficking while remaining mute on the issue of abortion. Are we attacking human trafficking because we are broadly opposed to those who would deny the humanity of the people they wish to treat as commodities? Or are we only opposed to the evil things that are not happening right here within our own congregation. I’ve never seen a human trafficker at our church. But I’ve seen a Planned Parenthood employee at our church. Is our silence a courtesy to her and to any of her clients who happen to attend our services?

I believe we need to act immediately to remedy the moral inconsistency of attacking the issue of human trafficking while remaining mute on the issue of abortion. We need to open our doors to people who work for Planned Parenthood as well as their clients who seek abortions – even if they do so because they see nothing wrong with abortion, or merely abort for purposes of convenience. But we need not accommodate such people to the point of turning our backs on those who need our help when faced with the prospect of having an abortion against their better judgment – whether due to financial or other forms of pressure.

The time has come for us to start a rescue fund for these women. We need to make funds available to help them avoid the abortion choice – and we need to explain that we are doing so because it is not a morally neutral choice. The church, of all places, cannot remain a zone of moral neutrality when it comes to this issue.

Years ago, when a pastor asked us to help rescue street children in Africa some thought we could not afford to do it. Thankfully, at least according to legend, one of the pastors at our church asked this crucial question before the staff decided to commit financially to helping the pastor with his ministry: Is God really going to punish us for helping to save homeless children?

That question is once again before us: Is God really going to punish us for helping to save the unborn? I do not believe He is. In fact, I believe that He will richly reward us for taking a stand.

I share your vision of growing to be a church of 20,000 people. We will get there if our vision is bold and if we commit to simply doing the next right thing, Getting involved in reducing human trafficking was the right thing to do. Reducing abortion is the next right thing to do.

… To be continued.

National Students for Life Conference - It's Worth Going!

Melody Durrett, Founder, Students for Life: What’s it like to go to a National Students for Life Conference? Will I really get anything out of it? Maybe you’re asking yourself questions like these as you think about registering for one of SFLA’s National Conferences in January.

Short answer: it’s awesome!

I have been lucky enough to attend two SFLA conferences and both have been major turning points for me in my journey as a pro-life activist – the first for me personally and the second one as a serious catalyst for our Students for Life club members at my college.

Prior to attending my first SFLA conference, I had worked with my friend to start a pro-life club at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon. Things were going well but our club was lacking direction and leaders with adequate leadership skills. I was passionate for Life but I was a little bit secretly ashamed to be known as pro-life, and I was absolutely scared to death to call myself anti-abortion.

At the East Coast National Conference, I attended the student Leadership Summit. One thing I remember clearly was walking away from that with a new-found truth that I was adamantly anti-abortion, and because of the nature of what abortion is, there is no reason to be ashamed of that. I also remember, after hearing so many national leaders speak, feeling an absolutely overwhelming sense of being blessed to be a part of ending abortion-the single greatest human rights issue of my day. I was also incredibly inspired and equipped to walk away from that conference all the way in D.C., go across the nation, back to my home in Oregon and inspire others in my club, where we as a group created huge goals of inspiring our entire campus to be pro-life!

The second time I went to the West Coast National Conference in San Francisco, I was able to go with seven of our club members. This time we heard the president of a pro-life club in New Mexico speak about how the Pregnant on Campus Initiative had transformed the culture on her campus. I was inspired after hearing her speak and after having a discussion with the other club members I learned that they had all felt a similar burden that our campus NEEDED to join the ranks of the Pregnant on Campus Initiative. So we decided to start standing out on campus every week, same day, same time, simply offering resources and reaching out to pregnant women on our campus. One of them, who is in school to become a nurse, is now considering an internship with a medical center that stations themselves across from Planned Parenthoods and offers women real help!

The two SFLA conferences I attended are two of the biggest blessings on my life! It is the most encouraging and awe-inspiring thing to meet hundreds, and stand with even thousands of other students my age who all have the mission of ending abortion and to know that we all face the same hardships on our college campuses.

The SFLA National Conference has become a “must attend” event of the year for our pro-life club!

I hope you can join me at the SFLA National Conference this year!

Simply go to and register today! The conferences sell out fast so be sure to sign up and secure your spot. We can’t wait to see you.

Take Action: Obamacare Architect Says its Passage Relied on the ‘Stupidity of the American Voter’

by CitizenLink Team: A key person behind the crafting of the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act says getting it passed relied on a “lack of transparency” and the “stupidity of the American voter.”

MIT Economist Jonathan Gruber made the comments during a 2013 panel discussion at the University of Pennsylvania. A video of his remarks just now has been gaining national attention.

In his Stoplight video commentary, Stuart Shepard adds context to what Gruber said.

You can quickly and easily send a message to your U.S. representative and senators through our Action Center. We wrote a few paragraphs that you can send, or you’re free to write your own thoughts.
