Top 12 of 2014 For 40 Days For Life

Shawn Carney, Campaign Director:  In 2014, God has blessed 40 Days for Life in many ways … in response to your prayers! We wanted to do a “top ten” list … but there were just too many great stories! So we settled on twelve.

While you’re here, please leave a comment below describing your hopes about what we’ll see in 2015 in the ongoing effort to end abortion.

From all of us at 40 Days for Life, here’s wishing you a happy and blessed new year!

12 – Abortion numbers continue to decrease
Here’s what can happen when 40 Days for Life comes to a community. The first 40 Days for Life vigil in Madison, Wisconsin took place the year this coordinated outreach began – 2007. Here are the area’s abortion numbers for each year since 2006:
fall2014madison3 For 2007 and 2008, the abortion numbers were exactly the same – that’s not a mistake! As the chart above shows … in each year since, the total number of abortions in Dane County, Wisconsin – where Madison is located – has come down.

Starting in 2011, an expanded prayer presence on the sidewalk began year-round, with people peacefully holding vigil every hour the Planned Parenthood abortion center was open. Abortion numbers declined again.
In 2012, Women’s Care Center, offering positive pregnancy help, opened up right across the street from Planned Parenthood. And again, abortion numbers went down.

The bottom line is that abortions in Madison have decreased by 37% since 2006, which just so happens to have been the last year before 40 Days for Life began.

11 – Lives saved in Mexico
“We have witnessed the transformation of more and more people,” said Lourdes, the local leader of Mexico City’s first-ever 40 Days for Life campaign. “They frequently send us messages about how 40 Days for Life has impacted their lives.”

In one case, a seminarian walked up to speak a woman who was arriving at the Marie Stopes facility for an abortion. He was dressed in clerical attire. She took one look at the Roman collar and left – he didn’t have to say a word.
Lourdes said another girl arrived in a taxi. “When she saw us praying, she started to cry and stayed in the taxi. Employees from the facility went to her to talk to her and convince her to enter … but she refused and left.”

The Marie Stopes staff gave flyers to their security guard to hand out – with typical “your body, your right to decide” talking points. But the officer gave all of the flyers to the vigil participants … and asked if he and his partner could get 40 Days for Life t-shirts.

10 – Drive-by egging misses the mark

Sometimes, standing in prayer can be a challenge. There are people who drive by who’d really like you to go home. Jim Ball, the 40 Days for Life leader in Green Bay, Wisconsin, reported on one of those situations … one he described as a “drive-by egging.”

Vigil participants had just wrapped up their prayer on the sidewalk when several dozen eggs were hurled at them from a passing car. “We’d just all hugged,” said Don, one of the volunteers, “when eggs came flying past us. It happened so fast, we didn’t see who did it, or get a description of the car.”

The eggs hit the sidewalk.
The eggs hit the lawn.
But the eggs did not hit the people praying.

9 – Watching the Holy Spirit at work
“The image of a young man at the Tempe Planned Parenthood is one that I will never forget,” said Lisa, the local 40 Days for Life leader in Tempe, Arizona. In his grief, he bent down and prayed.

He then stopped to talk to the prayer volunteers. “How fitting that you are out here,” he said. “I’ve been through this. My girlfriend had an abortion last week. She was 15 weeks pregnant … and this was not what I wanted.”
He was looking for someone to console and encourage him. “When asked if we can keep him in prayer,” Lisa said, “he said yes. We will also continue to pray for the young women who have made their ‘choice’ without knowing the full impact.”
This young man wanted his child, but that child was taken by the violence of abortion. However, he is trying to bear this with patience and sorrow … wanting to learn how he can make sure this won’t happen again.

“We never know,” said Lisa, “how the Holy Spirit will work during our time on the sidewalk.”

8 – “Are you the parking attendant?
John, a 40 Days for Life volunteer in Charleston, South Carolina, was praying outside the abortion center when a client stopped to ask him if he was the valet parking attendant. “No,” he said, “but I’d like to talk to you before you go in there!

The woman took him up on his offer and explained that she had two children and she wasn’t sure she could handle a third. John reassured her … and told her about the nearby pregnancy center that could help her with all of her concerns.
The woman went into the abortion center and returned 30 or 40 minutes later, proudly showing John her ultrasound and telling him that she had decided to keep her baby.

“We are excited to see how the Lord uses the smallest opportunities to start conversations and open the hearts of these women to choose life,” said one of the local leaders. “Valet parking, anyone?”

7 – Remaining calm in the face of challenges
The Cardiff, Wales campaign has faced more than its share of opposition, both on the pavement and in the media. A couple of stories from their local press showed what the volunteers must contend with.

One article featured the headline, “Pro-life campaign accused of harassing women as they visit Cardiff abortion clinic.” But the photo accompanying the story showed a more accurate picture of the vigil, as about a half dozen volunteers stood in a peaceful circle of prayer.

The same newspaper featured a commentary called “Those who stand in judgement should take a look at themselves.” The writer actually put these words into print: “Each lunchtime I find myself resisting the urge to lob my sandwiches at them, or simply shout in their self-righteous faces, ‘WHY?’”

“This is a sign the prayer volunteers are doing excellent work, when you have silly articles in the secular press,” said Robert Colquhoun, 40 Days for Life’s international outreach director.

6 – Free ultrasounds!
An abortion worker came out to tell the prayer volunteers they had to remove their signs from the sidewalk. Heather, the 40 Days for Life leader in Austin, Texas, thinks it’s one sign in particular they don’t like: “Ask me about free pregnancy tests and free ultrasounds.”

The volunteers were ready for such a ridiculous claim, so they produced a letter signed by the police chief, stating that signs could legally be used at the vigil. The abortion worker said that didn’t matter, because “the state is overriding the city on this one.” That, of course, wasn’t accurate.

“This tells me two things,” Heather said. “One, the abortion facility is obviously behind this; how would the worker know about this supposed new sign ordinance otherwise? And two, our signs must be turning away a ton of business at the abortion facility for them to go this far!”

She added that their attorney friends are keeping on top of this so the volunteers’ rights are protected.

5 – “I hate this place!”
While people prayed in the rain at the 40 Days for Life vigil in Sacramento, California, Wynette – the local coordinator – watched a scene unfold outside the abortion center.

“Several abortion business employees huddled together, holding their umbrellas, as they took turns hugging one abortion worker in particular,” she said … wondering what was going on.

A few minutes later, that worker exited the driveway right in front of Wynette and rolled down the car window, ignoring the falling rain.

“I’ve had enough!” the distraught worker called out. “I hate this place! I quit!”
“I cannot say much more,” Wynette said … but she added that the worker asked for prayer.
She encouraged prayer “for all abortion industry employees, in hopes that they would discontinue their involvement in destroying lives and hurting women.

4 – “I can’t do it”
40 Days for Life can reach even the most hard-hearted people. Volunteers outside Planned Parenthood in Roanoke pleaded with a teenager who was going in for an abortion. “Please don’t go in there,” they told her. The only “option” they offer would end the life of her child.

She laughed. “I know,” the young woman said. “That’s what I’m going to do.”
“It brought tears to my eyes,” said Shirley, the local 40 Days for Life coordinator in Roanoke. “I sat down and cried for her seeming callousness.”

But less than an hour later, tears turned to joy. The teen walked out of Planned Parenthood and spoke to the people praying outside. “I can’t do it,” she said. “I saw the ultrasound.”

She explained she was 6 weeks pregnant, her boyfriend didn’t want the baby – and she’s afraid of what her parents will say. The volunteers prayed with her – and helped set up an appointment for her at the pregnancy care center in her home town.
“I can’t tell you how much we rejoiced that she chose life for her baby,” Shirley said.

3 – “Come and ask me about it”

You may have seen women who are part of the Silent No More awareness campaign— if not at a 40 Days for Life vigil, then perhaps at the March for Life. They courageously carry simple signs that read, “I regret my abortion.”
They speak out — in an effort to spare other women the things they’ve experienced with abortion.

One 40 Days for Life volunteer in Savannah, Georgia decided she would be silent no more … and got an unexpected opportunity to tell her story.

“I felt that God was urging me to be bold,” she said. With that in mind, she put together a homemade sign, which she taped to the side of her car … and parked with that side of the car facing the abortion center.

The sign said: “I had an abortion here. Come and ask me about it!”

“Because I actually had an abortion in that clinic in January of 2012,” she said, “I am able to tell women and men about what actually goes on inside.”

While she was praying one morning, two abortion workers went outside and approached her. They had to admit they were curious about the sign, and wanted to know if she’d really had an abortion at their place of business. They also wanted to know what happened.

So she told them! She described the environment as “cold, quiet and unfeeling.” The staff was not unkind to her, “but you could tell they were very much about the job and any kind of opposition to actually having an abortion was immediately discredited.”

She spoke with a counselor who told her that there are many women who feel like abortion is the natural and right option for them. “Right then and there I knew something was wrong. But I ignored my gut feeling on the matter and went through with the procedure.”

When the employees who had approached her on the sidewalk heard this story, they seemed upset and claimed that her experience was through personal choice – that it was not the abortion business itself that had caused something bad to happen.

“It was a personal choice that I regret,” she told them, “but your clinic provides a service under the false pretense that it is the right choice.”

All because of the sign on her car! “The sign did exactly what I wanted it to do,” she said, “and that was give people the option to ask me about what happened when you had an abortion … I was using my ‘personal experience’ to potentially help save lives through the power of God.”

Business at the facility has been slowing down, she observed. “I fully believe that God is answering our prayers and Savannah Medical Clinic will in the near future be no longer offering abortions!”

2 – “I need to talk to a priest”
There have been 107 abortion workers who have had a change of heart and left their jobs during 40 Days for Life campaigns. Many of these workers leave during the last two weeks of the campaign … and today, we ask for prayers for one abortionist who is struggling with his conscience.

A prayer volunteer spoke to one of the abortionists at a facility where the 40 Days for Life vigil was in progress. They’ve had several conversations, and the volunteer says the man has told him, “I can’t do this anymore. I need to talk to a priest.”

The physician did indeed talk to a priest … and ended up leaving the abortion business.

1 – Abortionist out … church in
Five 40 Days for Life vigils had taken place outside the WomanCare abortion center in Lansing, Michigan. But local leaders in Lansing decided there would not be a sixth … because they knew the facility’s lease was expiring and the new tenant would be a local church!

This is the 59th abortion facility … where a 40 Days for Life vigil has been held on the sidewalk outside … that has closed its doors permanently.

About a year ago, a procession from the Church of the Resurrection brought hundreds of people together. They walked the short distance from the church to WomanCare “to claim it for Christ,” as Cecilia Tombelli, the local 40 Days for Life leader, put it. “The community placed its trust in the merciful heart of Jesus.”

It was also about this time that the Church of the Resurrection was making expansion plans. “The Lord made clear that our need for temporary office space and our parish commitment to pray and fast to end abortion might come together providentially,” said Fr. Steve Mattson, the church’s pastor.

So talks began with the owner of the building that housed the abortion center. It started with a simple question: Would the owner be willing to lease the space to the church instead of the abortionist?

“The abortionist never signed a lease,” Fr. Mattson explained. “He was going month to month.” The church offered a 33-month lease – and the building’s owner accepted. Bishop Earl Boyea then signed the lease.

As of October 1, the 4,100 square feet of space at 1601 East Grand River in Lansing was no longer the home of an abortion business. It will now house parish offices, a chapel and a new pro-life center.

“Thanks be to God!” Cecilia said. “We have been given the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ … and death has been swallowed up! There is no longer an abortion clinic anywhere in Lansing.”
What a year! Can’t wait to see what God comes up with in 2015!

Chaplain Shot by Muslim, Buried with Police Honors

Mural of Chaplain Ramos
Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Praying In Jesus Name: One of the two NYPD police officers in NYC was a Christian chaplain, who was buried with full honors yesterday, after being shot by an Arabic-speaking Muslim.

"Ramos, 40, a deeply spiritual man who enjoyed serving others, was set to become a chaplain the day he and his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, were assassinated by a deranged gunman in Brooklyn," reports Staten Island Live.

"Officer Ramos was profoundly a man of faith. So much of his life centered on this beautiful church, this church family," Mayor Bill de Blasio said during his speech at the funeral. "He embraced a powerful idea - if your way isn't working, try God's way."

"He spent the last 10 weeks of his life studying to be a chaplain. And he was taken from us on the day he was to graduate," de Blasio continued. "It says so much that he wanted to serve people spiritually. He was already serving in so many ways, and yet, he felt deeply called to serve spiritually as well."

"Bratton also posthumously promoted both officers to detective first grade, and asked the massive crowd of 25,000 police officers to join him in a standing ovation to honor the fallen men."

Major media fail to report the Muslim background of the shooter Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who killed two cops in cold blood. Professor Andrew Bostom reports "People are reluctant to even acknowledge that the man is a professed Muslim and comes from a Muslim background… There were four high profile attacks by Western Muslims against Western societies, specifically targeting police, since the September 22nd fatwa by an important ISIS ideologue was posted online. And in that fatwa it calls for attacks on westerners but it specifically targeted police."

Spending Measure Allows Abortion Coverage For Peace Corps Volunteers

The $1.1 trillion spending bill included a provision that allows federal abortion coverage for Peace Corps volunteers, which has been barred since 1979.

by Josh Hicks, The Washington Post: (Excerpts) Congress and President Obama this week halted a 35-year ban on federal abortion assistance for Peace Corps volunteers with their approval of a government-wide spending bill.

The legislation extends abortion coverage to Peace Corps volunteers in cases of rape, incest and life endangerment, giving them the same assistance the government provides for federal prisoners, female troops, women on Medicaid, and much of the federal workforce, including paid Peace Corps employees.

The bill’s passage quietly ended a battle over abortion coverage that started more than a year ago, when the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) proposed legislation to the same effect.

. . . Antiabortion groups have opposed efforts to lift the ban. Americans United for Life has suggested that the Obama administration was trying to expand abortion services and should instead focus on doing a better job of protecting Peace Corps volunteers.

MORE: Women’s health groups want Peace Corps volunteers to have insurance coverage for abortions. . . .

Ironically, the Peace Corps abortion ban came about through a rider attached to the Peace Corps’ annual appropriations bill in 1979. That means the restriction started and ended with language that lawmakers inserted into funding bills.

Chaplain Punished for Printing Bible Verses on Suicide Prevention

Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Praying In Jesus Name: A U.S. Army Chaplain is under fire, punished for printing Bible verses on a paper handout about suicide prevention.

Lt. General Jerry Boykin of Family Research Council reports in today's email blast:

"On November 20th, Capt. Joseph Lawhorn, U.S. Army Chaplain at Fort Benning, participated in a mandatory suicide awareness and prevention briefing in which he gave a presentation describing resources – both spiritual and secular – that were available for handling such grave mental health situations. He went further and discussed his personal struggles with depression, describing the spiritual and religious steps that helped him during those dark times in his life.

"As a result of the chaplain’s discussion of his faith, he was called into his brigade commander’s office on Thanksgiving Day. There Col. David G. Fivecoat issued Chaplain Lawhorn a Letter of Concern that is to remain in his personnel file for the duration of his stay at Fort Benning. This type of letter can be devastating for career military personnel and would likely prohibit further professional advancement of Chaplain Lawhorn.

"The fact that a chaplain was reprimanded for discussing his faith in a suicide prevention course is beyond belief. It casts a chilling effect upon other chaplains and military personnel who would speak about their faith. How else would a Christian chaplain be expected to respond to a crisis that is plaguing our men and women in uniform?

"This kind of intimidation must be eradicated from our armed forces."

Abortion and African Americans

by Kerby Anderson, Point of View:: Abortion is devastating the black population in America. In an article by Star Parker and Gary Bauer in a past edition of the The Weekly Standard, they lay out statistics showing how abortion is affecting African-Americans more than any other identifiable group or population.

They point out that President Obama’s “ascendance to the White House has been almost uniformly regarded as a complete victory for black Americans, it also stands to exacerbate one of the black community’s most intractable problems: the destruction of black children in the womb.”

Legalized abortion in this country has led to the killing of over 50 million unborn Americans. But the percentage of abortions varies and is higher in the African-American community than in any other. Nearly half of black pregnancies end in abortion. Three in five black women will abort a child. That means that 1,500 black Americans are aborted every single day.

What has this done to the African-American population in America? Abortion has reduced the black population by roughly one-third because of abortion. And the disparity among racial groups is widening according to recent reports.

In the last twenty years, the share of all abortions performed on white women decreased from 45 percent to 35 percent. By contrast, the percentage share of abortions performed on black women increased from 32 percent to 37 percent. Since blacks now constitute 13 percent of the population, this means that black babies were aborted about five times the rate of white babies.

A study in Canada shows that the high abortion rate among black women is also a “probable cause” for the disproportionately high rate of subsequent premature births among blacks. That rate is three to four times higher than for women of other ethnic groups.

Abortion has had a devastating impact on America, but the greatest devastation has been among the African-American community.

Abortions declining in many U.S. States. Why?

Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt, PhD, Praying In Jesus Name: "The Centers for Disease Control released its national abortion report on Friday and the new figured show the number of abortions in the United States has declined to a historic low. From 2010 to 2011, the total number and rate of reported abortions decreased 5% and the abortion ratio decreased 4%, and from 2002 to 2011," reports LifeNews.

"Although 730,322 babies lost their lives in abortions in 2011, the latest year CDC has produced figures for, that represents a decline of about half since the highs of more than 1.5 million in the late 1980s, when the effect of legalizing abortion in 1973 finally took its full effect..."

"The data also indicates abortions are down on younger women — making it clear that efforts to provide abortion alternatives to teens and college students has paid dividends.

"Although there is much good news in the latest report, the numbers also show that abortions are up among older women, especially among women over the age of 40 — who may be increasingly using abortion as a form of birth control."

It is likely that over-the-counter availability of plan-B abortion pills, and wider prescription use of RU-486 and other "kill your baby at home kit" drugs are replacing surgical abortions as top choice, but these are just as deadly.

Let's ask Congress to define life beginning at conception:

Shirt Company Won't Fold on Values

Family Research Council: T-shirt maker Blaine Adamson doesn't exactly wear his heart on his sleeve, but he's not about to ignore it either. When the Kentucky businessman was approached about printing rainbow shirts for Lexington's gay pride festival two years ago, he had to turn the job down. As a Christian, he felt that using his shop to promote a message that contradicted his faith was a non-starter.

Unfortunately, Adamson has paid for his principles -- dearly. In October, the city's "special rights" ordinance -- the same kind of measure that's caused a firestorm in Houston, San Antonio, Fayetteville, and Springfield -- came back to bite Hands On, which was found guilty of "discrimination" and sentenced to a year of "sensitivity training." As far as Lexington's Human Rights Commissioner was concerned, it's time for Christians in the marketplace "to leave their religion at home."

But that won't happen without a fight. Late last week, Blaine announced that he's appealing the decision. "No one should be forced by the government to endorse or promote ideas with which they disagree," his attorneys at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) argued."Laws that do that are fundamentally unjust. We are appealing the commission’s decision because the First Amendment protects the freedom of every American to decline to speak on any issue without fear of punishment."

When Adamson takes his battle to the next level, he'll have some interesting allies by his side: openly gay couple (and fellow t-shirt company owners), Kathy Trautvetter and Diane DiGeloromo. "The idea is that when you own your own business, it's your own art and creation -- it's very personal... it takes a long time to build a business," Trautvetter explained. "When someone wants to force you to go against it -- tha's what stuck me right in the heart. I really felt for Blaine."

Americans should feel for every businessman who's being muscled out of the market for holding views that an overwhelming number of people share. Fortunately the Constitution doesn't guarantee rights on the basis of political correctness. So as long as we are a nation ruled by law the Adamsons have as much freedom to reject homosexuality as his customers do to endorse it.

Pastor: As Father of Four Adopted Children, Being Forced to Cover Abortions Is ‘Repulsive Beyond Words’

by Kelsey Harkness, The Daily Signal, Heritage Foundation: For 36 years, Jim Garlow didn’t know his first adopted child was the result of a rape.

But after his wife Carol lost a six-year battle with cancer last year, their daughter, Janie, went in search of her birth mother. In succeeding, Janie also discovered the horrific circumstances of her own conception.

The story spurs Jim Garlow, a pastor in California, to fight a state mandate that his church’s employee health plan pay for elective abortions.

When Janie’s birth mother was a freshman in high school, two senior boys asked her to go to the movies. Instead, they took her to an open field, where they raped her. She became pregnant.

Heroically, the teenage girl decided not to get an abortion but to keep the baby until birth, then give her up for adoption.

In an emotional interview with The Daily Signal, Garlow says the decision that spared his future daughter wasn’t the result of her birth mother’s “profound religious convictions” but because “she felt like it was the right thing to do.”

Janie, now 37, became the first of four children whom Jim and Carol Garlow would adopt. Those children — Josie Garlow Debus, Jake Garlow, Josh Garlow and Janie Garlow McGarity — are all grown today.

Garlow, 67, is senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego, founded in 1954 as part of the Wesleyan denomination. After the death of his first wife, he married Rosemary Schindler, an active advocate for Christians all over the world.

Their father regards the four Garlow children as the fruit of four women who made the “courageous” decision to go through with their pregnancies. The most courageous of all, he says, was Janie’s mother.

Garlow, who in 1995 became the third senior pastor in Skyline’s 60-year history, holds a doctorate in historical theology from Drew University. He received a master’s degree in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and a master of divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.

His religious beliefs, combined with a deep gratitude for the four mothers who chose to keep their unborn children, have anchored his pro-life views.

And then this fall, the unimaginable happened: Garlow discovered the state of California was forcing him and the staff of his church to pay for health insurance plans that cover elective abortions. They have no choice.

The state’s rule, the pastor says, defies every fiber of his being:I feel that not only [that] the killing of babies in the womb is wrong foundationally, but as a father who had the privilege of adopting four children … was repulsive beyond words.Garlow didn’t know how to break the news to his tight-knit congregation. After he was asked to speak at a congressional briefing Dec. 1, though, he sent an e-blast to parishioners, writing:I apologize for bringing bad news. This is shocking … and repulsive. As of last Aug. 22, our California state government (not Obamacare, this is the state) has required all insurance policies to cover elective abortions. This includes us as a church. We – along with other churches and Christian colleges – are protesting this coercive and intrusive action by filing formal protests against this abusive action. I will be speaking on this topic this week in Washington, D.C., at a special hearing at which we are strongly urging the federal government to step in immediately and pass the ‘Abortion Non-Discrimination Act.’ Pray for me as I speak. And pray for Congress to act – now.Call it ironic: Churches in California are forced to pay for abortions through employee health insurance, but under Obamacare are supposed to be exempt from paying for contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs for their employees.

Since 2005, under a measure known as the Weldon Amendment, Congress has prohibited states that receive certain federal funds from discriminating against insurance plans that don’t provide abortion coverage. The Hyde Amendment, first passed in 1976, prohibits using federal tax money to pay for elective abortions.

So how did this happen in California?

The state’s abortion mandate didn't go through the normal legislative process, says Casey Mattox, a senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, which champions religious liberty.

Mattox, who represents Garlow’s Skyline Church and seven other churches in California, recalls how the issue of contraceptives was debated as part of Obamacare:Legislatures realized, ‘We can’t force churches to pay for contraceptives,’ that clearly you have to exempt churches from that mandate. [State lawmakers] were able to put in appropriate exemptions to make sure at least some aspect of religious liberty was protected, but this [California] abortion mandate just went through a bureaucratic process. It’s basically a sneak attack on religious liberty. It came out of nowhere. The California Department of Managed Health Care mandated that, effective Aug. 22, almost all health insurance plans must cover elective abortions.

The rule came after the American Civil Liberties Union convinced state insurance officials that abortion is a “basic health service.” Siding with the ACLU, state bureaucrats decided the agency no longer would approve health plans that don’t cover the life-ending procedure.

“There was no opportunity for churches to weigh in on the process,” Mattox says.

In September, the lawyer filed an administrative complaint on behalf of Garlow and other California pastors with the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The pastors have yet to receive a response.

Sarah Torre, a policy analyst who follows religious liberty cases for The Heritage Foundation, says that in the current legal landscape, the decision before pastors such as Garlow is this: Continue offering health insurance covering procedures that end the life of unborn children, or drop insurance altogether.

“So Pastor Garlow and others can do nothing but wait on bureaucrats in HHS to enforce the law,” Torre says.

Churches and other religious organizations can avoid the mandate by self-insuring, but it’s a costly endeavor that could take months, even years.

“We can’t self-insure, Garlow says. “We’d need years of preparation to be in that kind of posture economically.”

Garlow and others appealed to Congress, hoping his story would spur legislation to protect the conscience rights of individuals and churches.

A total of 132 lawmakers, led by Reps. Diane Black, R-Tenn. and Rep. John Fleming, R-La., wrote Nov. 25 to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to express “deep concern” over the California abortion mandate.

“Forcing pastors, teachers, social service providers and Catholic institutions to pay for abortion should be unthinkable,” they wrote.

HHS has yet to respond to the lawmakers’ request to enforce the Weldon Amendment in California.

It is clear that Burwell “does not intend to enforce the law,” Fleming told The Daily Signal.

Conservative lawmakers are pushing for passage of the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act, part of H.R. 940, which would allow individuals to pursue legal action to protect their religious rights.

Pro-life members of the House and Senate will not back down, Fleming says, but their success depends upon the support from Republican leadership, which previously blamed inaction on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

In January, though, the Nevada Democrat will be succeeded by current Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., when Republicans claim their new nine-seat majority in the Senate as a result of the midterm elections.

“That excuse is getting very weak now that we have won a majority in the Senate and we have a resounding majority in the House,” Fleming says. “It’s time that our GOP leadership begins to get on board.”

Until then, California churches are expected to pay for a life-ending procedure that contradicts the core of their beliefs.

“I can’t fathom us participating in something so horrific and sinful,” Garlow says.

Sadly, the pastor and his supporters believe, he already is.
