Rep. Marsha Blackburn Named Pro-Life Group’s 2016 Person of the Year

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.)
Operation Rescue is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2016 Pro-Life Person of the Year Malachi Award is Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) for her work as Chairman of the House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives.

The Malachi Award is given by Operation Rescue every year to recognize individuals who sacrificially work to advance the cause of protecting the pre-born.

“Operation Rescue is grateful to Chairman Marsha Blackburn for her courageous willingness to investigate the shadowy illegal underworld of trafficking in aborted baby remains by Planned Parenthood and others. We know that she underwent constant attacks from the opposition, which wanted desperately to cover up these crimes,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

Under Blackburn’s leadership, the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives made 15 criminal and regulatory referrals to state and federal authorities, seeking further investigations and possible prosecutions of five Planned Parenthood organizations, three organ procurement companies, the University of New Mexico, and three other late-term abortion facilities. . . . . . . Former Obama Staffer Admits Democrats are Too “in Love With” Abortion

Michael Wear
As journalists and political pundits continue speculating about why Democrats lost so heavily in the election, one word keeps popping up – abortion.

The Democratic Party adopted its most extreme, out-of-touch position on abortion ever at its convention in July, calling for taxpayer funding of abortion, support of Planned Parenthood and abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy.

And Michael Wear, a former faith-outreach director for Barack Obama, believes that was a problem for many voters.

Wear, a pro-life evangelical Christian and a Democrat, recently shared his take on the November election with The Atlantic. Abortion came up frequently during the interview with reporter Emma Green.

“The Democratic Party used to welcome people who didn’t support abortion into the party,” Wear said. “We are now so far from that, it’s insane.”

The party does not just support abortion, it supports abortion to an extreme that most Americans, including many Democrats, are uneasy with. For example, the Democratic Party’s new platform calls for the end of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion in Medicaid.

For four decades the amendment had strong bi-partisan support – and for good reason. Polls consistently find that a strong majority of Americans, including Democrats, women and those who identify as pro-choice, do not want their tax dollars to pay for abortions. . . . Read More

Obama Tries to Force Catholic Groups to Pay for Abortions . . .

. . . Now They’re Fighting Back in Court

Yesterday, the Catholic Benefits Association and the Diocese of Fargo filed a lawsuit challenging federal rules that require Catholic hospitals and healthcare providers to perform gender transition procedures and abortions contrary to their own medical judgment and Catholic values.

The new rules also require Catholic dioceses, religious orders, and other Catholic employers to cover gender transition surgeries and their group insurers to cover surgical abortions in their health plans. These rules are part of a multi-agency effort to redefine the term “sex” in federal antidiscrimination laws.

“For decades, Congress and the courts have understood the term ‘sex’ in federal law to mean biological sex – male and female,” explained Archbishop William Lori, Chairman of the Catholic Benefits Association (CBA). “By redefining ‘sex’ to mean both ‘gender identity’ and ‘termination of pregnancy,’ the Obama administration is not only trying to sidestep Congress and impose radical new healthcare mandates on hospitals and employers, it is creating a moral problem for Catholic employers that must be addressed.” . . .

The lawsuit takes aim at regulations issued earlier this year by the Department of Health and Human Services requiring Catholic healthcare providers to ignore their own medical judgment and perform gender transition surgeries. Among the newly mandated procedures are a penectomy (removal of penis), metoidioplasty (creation of penis, using clitoris), vaginectomy (removal of vagina), and vulvectomy (removal of vulva). . . .

In the lawsuit, the CBA seeks to invalidate HHS regulations issued under Section 1557 of the Affordance Care Act and EEOC rules purporting to interpret Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The plaintiffs assert violations of the Administrative Procedure Act, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the First Amendment, and other federal laws. The lawsuit was filed in federal district court in North Dakota.

The Catholic Benefits Association is a group of employers committed to providing life-affirming health coverage consistent with Catholic teaching. Directed by seven archbishops and four laypersons, it consists of over 880 Catholic employers (including hospitals, colleges, religious orders, businesses, and over 60 archdioceses and dioceses,) plus over 5,000 parishes, together covering over 90,000 employees and their families. . . . The 16 Top Pro-Life Moments of 2016

by Andrew Bair, National Right to Life:  Counting Down the 16 Top Pro-Life Moments of 2016:

1.The March for Life goes on in the face of historic DC blizzard: Despite many buses being forced to turn around to avoid the impending blizzard heading for the nation’s capital, there was still a strong and dedicated showing pro-life support on the streets of Washington for the 2016 March for Life. It’s clear that no amount of snow or bad weather can shake the commitment of the pro-life grassroots!

Four states enact a ban on dismemberment abortions: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia joined a growing number of states in banning the horrific dismemberment abortion method. These laws not only protect unborn babies but serve to educate the public about the brutality of abortion. Read more about dismemberment abortions.

Ohio, South Carolina, and South Dakota join 12 other states in passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act: This important legislation extends legal protection to unborn children 20 weeks and older. Substantial medical and scientific evidence shows that by this stage, if not earlier, babies are capable of experiencing pain.

4.. Other state legislative victories
included Oklahoma passing the pro-education Humanity of the Unborn Child Act, Georgia passing positive alternatives legislation, Indiana passing a ban on selective abortions based on sex or disability, and Louisiana increasing their waiting period from 24 hours to 72 hours.

5. The 40th Anniversary of the Hyde Amendment: First enacted in 1976, the Hyde Amendment has saved an estimated 2 million lives from abortion. This annual appropriations amendment stops taxpayer dollars from being used to fund most abortions and abortion coverage through government programs like Medicaid.

6. Pro-Life candidates triumph in 2016 elections: Up and down the ballot, pro-life candidates scored impressive victories. Here is how National Right to Life fared in the 2016 elections:

7. Hillary Clinton forced to defend late abortions during presidential debate: During the final presidential debate, moderator Chris Wallace brought up the topic of abortion. In a moment that was even cringe worthy for Democrats, Clinton reaffirmed her support for the partial-birth abortion method and abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy. By contrast, Trump said, “I am pro-life, and I will be appointing pro-life judges.”

8. Planned Parenthood and EMILY’s List spend big and lose big in the 2016 elections: Millions upon millions of dollars were spent by the political arm of the nation’s largest abortion provider and by EMILY’s List, a radical pro-abortion PAC that only backs female Democrats who support abortion without limits. Planned Parenthood alone spent at least $38 million in the elections.

9. Pro-Life selections announced for key cabinet positions: The incoming Administration has announced the selection of several pro-life champions for key roles. These include Rep. Tom Price for HHS Secretary, Sen. Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary, Gov. Nikki Haley for U.N. Ambassador, and Kellyanne Conway as Counselor to the President.

10. Doritos Super Bowl commercial highlights humanity of unborn children, provokes outrageous meltdown from abortion advocates: NARAL Pro-Choice America lost it on social media during the Super Bowl when a Doritos ad featured an unborn baby on an ultrasound. They trashed the ad for “humanizing fetuses,” further exposing how out of touch the pro-abortion movement really is.

11. U.S. House and Senate send filibuster-proof reconciliation bill to President Obama’s desk that would have defunded Planned Parenthood: Despite President Obama’s veto, the move set a precedent for advancing such a bill under a new president, without 60 votes in the U.S. Senate.

12. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell holds the line and prevents the appointment of pro-abortion Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court: By holding off a Senate vote on Obama’s Supreme Court pick, McConnell injected the issue of the Supreme Court into the 2016 elections, an issue which helped mobilize many pro-life voters. Now, the vacancy left by the late Antonin Scalia will be filled by someone chosen by the President-elect, who repeatedly promised to appoint someone who reflects Scalia’s judicial philosophy.

13. Pro-Life traitor Rep. Renee Ellmers (NC-02) defeated in GOP Primary: There were many electoral triumphs for the pro-life movement in 2016 but the defeat of Rep. Renee Ellmers was particularly symbolic. In early 2015, Ellmers launched an extended public campaign against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Although the bill ultimately passed the House, the delay and damage inflicted by Rep. Ellmers diminished its chances in the Senate, where pro-abortion senators were able to organize a successful filibuster to prevent the ban from advancing despite the support of a majority of senators. “There is no member of Congress in recent memory who did greater harm to a major piece of pro-life legislation, while claiming to be pro-life, than Renee Ellmers,” said Douglas Johnson, Director of Federal Legislation for National Right to Life.

14. Latest CDC report shows a 5% decline in abortions nationwide: The latest numbers from the CDC are confirmation that America is moving, perhaps even accelerating, towards a culture more hospitable to unborn life. Read the report from NRLC’s Dr. Randall K. O’Bannon.

15. Pro-Life advocates shine light on the tragic legacy of Planned Parenthood on its 100th birthday: In 2016, Planned Parenthood celebrated 100 years since its founding. While it celebrated a birthday, there were millions unable to celebrate birthdays due to abortion.

16. House Select Panel on Infant Lives investigates harvesting and trafficking of baby body parts, highlights importance of protecting born-alive abortion survivors: Testifying before the panel in April, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, the prime sponsor of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, hit the nail on the head when he noted, “Here, on this basic reality, we can and must find agreement: Babies are not the sum of their body parts. Babies are not meant to be bought. Babies are not meant to be sold. Babies are just that—babies. They’re meant to be welcomed and rejoiced over, held and nurtured.”

Human Dignity Hangs in the Balance

by Dave Andrusko, National Right to Life: Last Friday a wonderful piece, written by Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, appeared on his blog.

40 Years After Roe, Human Dignity Hangs in the Balance” can be read in its entirety -- it is well worth your time.

In my judgment the best section of this analysis is answering the question that pro-abortionists are prone to ask from time to time: why won’t this battle end, why hasn’t it ended? Dr. Mohler offers five responses.

#1. Roe was so radical it galvanized pro-lifers. “Within months of Roe, an organized pro-life movement came into shape, looking for any means of limiting and eventually ending the termination of unborn life.”

#2. Roe had the unintended consequence of awakening a sleeping giant: Evangelicals. The Catholic Church, which had done virtually all the heavy lifting, now had a partner. Mohler writes, “With remarkable speed, evangelicals soon educated themselves on the issue and then mobilized themselves both politically and culturally.”

#3. “The sheer scale of the death toll sears the pro-life conscience,” he writes. Many people have at least heard something about there being “over 50 million abortions.” [The actual figure is now over 59 million.]. What is becoming better known—and very, very frightening—are “Reports last year [that] indicated that over 40 percent of all pregnancies in New York end in abortion, a rate that increases to almost 60 percent of pregnancies among African-American women.”

#4. “[A]bortion has proved to be exactly what pro-life activists warned it would be: a deadly threat to human dignity that would target specific populations,” Mohler writes. “Prenatal testing has produced a deadly reality for unborn babies considered less than acceptable by their parents.”

#5. The impact of technology. “[P]owerful imaging technologies now allow a look inside the womb, a privilege unknown to previous generations,” Mohler observes. “That window has transformed the equation, as millions of parents have seen their unborn children and witnessed the miracle of life.” Of course, all that notwithstanding abortion remains legal.

Mohler concludes with this powerful insight:We have much ground to recover, but the only foundation for a recovery of human dignity is an affirmation of the fact that every single human being is made in God’s image and is of sacred worth from the moment of fertilization until natural death.

Catholic Public School Teacher Fired For Refusing To Teach Planned Parenthood Program

Life Legal Defense Foundation: Bill Diss, a Portland, Oregon public school teacher was fired after he objected to facilitating a Planned Parenthood sex education program in his classroom. The judge granted the defendant’s motion for summary judgment, which means the case cannot go before a jury. Life Legal is appealing the decision.

Bill Diss became “enemy number one” with his local Planned Parenthood affiliate when he led opposition to a new PP mega-facility in downtown Portland.

When Planned Parenthood employees wanted to come into Diss’ classroom to recruit students for their “Teen Outreach Program,” or TOP, Diss said no. TOP is a federally-funded sex ed program that targets children as young as 10 years old. Diss respectfully asked to be excused from facilitating the program, as the content violated his religious convictions.

The school refused and then fired Mr. Diss.

The same Planned Parenthood affiliate was caught on video giving a 15-year-old girl advice on how to access pornography and engage in dangerous, deviant sexual acts.

The lower court ruled that teachers like Mr. Diss should not be afforded the full protection of the Constitution when they have religious objections to teaching content that violates their most deeply held beliefs.

Life Legal vehemently disagrees and we have filed notice to appeal the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. We are honored to represent Bill Diss and we will continue to fight for his First Amendment rights.

African-American History Museum Excludes Pro-Life Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
by Sen. Ted Cruz: On Sept. 24, after years of effort, the National Museum of African American History and Culture was finally opened to the public. The Smithsonian’s new museum has been rightly praised for its detailed, complex, and powerful portrayal of the African-American experience in the United States.

As The Wall Street Journal and New York Times have observed, the museum is simultaneously uplifting and upsetting—and it should be, given that the tapestry of our nation’s history includes both the disgraceful epoch of slavery and the inspiring endeavors of legendary African-American leaders like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr.

It is about one of these leaders that I write today: Clarence Thomas, the second African-American justice to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as the longest-serving African-American justice.

As much as I am grateful for the museum and its efforts to preserve and promote the indispensable contributions of African-Americans to the collective history of our nation, I believe the museum has made a mistake by omitting the enormous legacy and impact of Thomas, as well as his compelling background.

Even in the context of the countless African-American heroes from U.S. history, few “against all odds” tales are more inspirational than that of Thomas. To quote one Thomas expert, Mark Paoletta:

[Thomas] grew up in the segregated deep south of coastal Georgia. Because of his Geechee heritage, he experienced discrimination from other African-Americans as well as from whites. Thomas was fortunate that he was sent at age 7 to live with his grandparents, who were both strong role models. His grandfather, Myers Anderson, was uneducated but built a small business delivering fuel oil, coal, firewood, and ice in the Savannah community. He instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and accountability. He used to tell Thomas and his younger brother, “Old Man Can’t is dead. I helped bury him.”

Ever his grandfather’s son, Thomas also helped bury “Old Man Can’t”—in spectacular fashion. Thomas’ dramatic journey from enduring entrenched racial discrimination to serving on the highest court in a country of 320 million people is one that should be shouted from the rooftops to all Americans.

And Thomas’ historic rise is only half of the story. This year, we commemorate the 25th anniversary of his appointment to the Supreme Court. In a quarter-century, Thomas has carved out one of the more profound and unique legacies in the court’s history.

. . . If you were to travel back in time to Pin Point, Georgia, in 1948, and ask that community whether a newborn in Thomas’ circumstances could someday sit on the Supreme Court of the United States, I am confident the answer of most (if not all) would have been: No way.

And yet, by the grace of God, 68 years later, here he is. . . . Read More

Planned Parenthood Abortion Company Closed 27 Clinics In 2016

The nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, closed 27 facilities in 2016, One News Now reports.

American Life League, which tracks data related to abortion and Planned Parenthood, found that the nation’s largest abortion provider opened eight new facilities and closed 27 others in 2016. The abortion chain currently operates 624 facilities, according to ALL.

. . . Abortion is a big money-maker for Planned Parenthood. Many of the facilities that it closed in the past few years did not perform abortions. Instead, they referred women to other facilities for abortions. One News Now noted that many of the 2016 closings involved facilities that were not making a profit.

A survey of abortion facilities in 2016 by Operation Rescue found that the average first-trimester surgical abortion costs $625.35. Planned Parenthood performs approximately 320,000 abortions a year, and its most recent annual report showed it bringing in almost $1.3 billion in revenue.

. . . Pro-lifers hope to see more Planned Parenthoods and other abortion facilities close in the near future as Republicans take control of the House, Senate and White House. President-elect Donald Trump promised that he would sign a bill to defund Planned Parenthood as long as it continues to do abortions.

In January 2016, the House and Senate passed a measure to defund Planned Parenthood, but pro-abortion President Barack Obama vetoed it. Read More

Pro-Life Counselor Meets Twin Babies She Helped Save From Abortion

Christina Marie Bennett with the twins
. . . The staff and volunteers at the ABC Women’s Center walked with Sara through her pregnancy. We gave her a brand new crib and connected her with individuals who gave her a beautiful baby shower. Sara joined our parenting program, which allows her to receive education and material resources through her pregnancy, until her twins are two years old. Sara told me recently, “I don’t know if I would have been strong enough to go through this without you guys at ABC.”

This holiday season, Sara came into ABC Women’s Center to pick up brand new Christmas toys for her children. She brought along her precious twins, a boy and a girl. It was my first time seeing them and I was overjoyed. As I held her little girl I began to weep. I thought back to the first time I met Sara. The tears begin to fall as I remembered all the struggles she endured to choose life for her babies.

Since it’s close to Christmas, I was wearing a Santa hat as I gave out presents. I wanted to take a picture of Sara with her babies but she insisted I take one with them instead. We decided to dress up the babies in Santa hats just for fun. . . .

This Christmas, Sara has a full and happy heart. Her beautiful, healthy twins are the light in her life. I cried when I saw them, and Sara told me she did the same for weeks after they were born. They bring her joy, and she is deeply grateful to have them.

Sara’s story embodies one of the phrases ABC Women’s Center stands by: ‘Hope is stronger than fear.’ Sara was anxious and alone, yet in the midst of her pain, she chose to parent and believed for the best.

Here’s to a very Merry Christmas for her and her beautiful family.

19 States Pass 60 Pro-Life Laws in 2016 to Save Babies from Abortion

Pro-life lawmakers in 19 states succeeded in passing more than 60 new laws in 2016 to help protect unborn babies from abortion, The Intercept reports.

The numbers came from a new report from the Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion advocacy group that tracks abortion-related legislation. The numbers are only partially encouraging for pro-lifers; abortion activists managed to block a number of the laws in the courts.

According to the report, state legislators considered more than 100 bills in 2016 that were directly related to the Center for Medical Progress’s undercover videos that exposed Planned Parenthood’s baby body parts trafficking.

Of those, eight states passed laws to defund Planned Parenthood, eight passed laws to prohibit the sale or donation of aborted babies’ body parts, and four passed laws prohibiting dismemberment abortions (D&E), a gruesome procedure that involves tearing an unborn baby limb from limb and then removing it in pieces from the womb.

Other states passed laws to prohibit abortions on unborn babies after 20 weeks when substantial evidence indicates that they are capable of feeling pain. Ohio was the latest to pass a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act several weeks ago. Abortion activists have been more reluctant to challenge these laws, and 14 currently are in effect, saving hundreds of late-term unborn babies’ lives from abortion.

The report listed pro-life laws that passed in 19 states: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Texas brought the list up to 20; however its regulations came from state health department administrators, not the legislature. . . . Read More

Trump Must Lock In Religious Exemptions

by Bill Donohue: President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to work with people of faith on many matters, and his goodwill is very much appreciated. Among the most pressing issues is the fate of religious exemptions to federal laws.

The Obama administration has waged war on religious institutions in many ways: it has sought to redefine Catholic institutions by forcing them to provide coverage for abortion-inducing drugs in their healthcare plans, and has denied funds to Catholic institutions that fight human trafficking (this was payback for opposing abortion). It has also sought to undo legislative provisions that are religion-friendly. Moreover, these attacks have inspired radical secularists to do likewise at the state level.

One of the many ways the Obama administration has sought to undermine religious organizations is to deny the kinds of religious exemptions that have traditionally been granted by previous administrations. Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments is a case in point.

Title IX bars discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions that receive federal financial assistance. It explicitly exempts religious organizations. Until Obama took power in 2009, there were few, if any, problems with this provision. The most recent issue is the absence of the religious exemption afforded by Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, or ObamaCare.

The problem is not the language of Title IX; rather, it is with the way the language has been twisted by LGBT activists and government lawyers. For example, the absence of a religious exemption to ObamaCare now means that Catholic non-profits are faced with having to pay for "gender transition services, hormonal treatments, counseling and a host of surgeries that would remove or transform the sexual organs of men or women transitioning to the other gender." This is madness at any level, never mind forcing religious institutions to honor it.

Similar legislation almost passed in California in September, and attempts to intimidate religious institutions—forcing them to post exemptions from Title IX on their websites—is the subject of a bill introduced by Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts.

Traditional Catholics, evangelicals, observant Jews, as well as many Mormons and Muslims, will be looking to the Trump administration to lock in religious exemptions provided by federal laws. Fortunately, Dr. Tom Price, who has been a strong advocate of religious freedom in Congress, will head the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency that has waged a relentless war on religious institutions.

The Catholic League strongly urges the Trump administration to undo the damage that the Obama administration has done to religious entities.
William "Bill" Donohue is President of the Catholic League.

Pope Francis Slams Abortion in His Christmas Message . . .

. . . Respect Those “Not Allowed to be Born”

Hearkening to the birth of Jesus Christ, Pope Francis used his Christmas message to urge Catholics worldwide to express compassion for those “not allowed to be born.”

Speaking to tens of thousands of Catholics in Saint Peter’s Square, the head of the Catholic Church asked worshipers to celebrate “the fragile simplicity of a small newborn.”

“Let us allow ourselves to be challenged by the children who are not allowed to be born, by those who cry because no one satiates their hunger, by those who do have not toys in their hands, but rather weapons,” he said.

Referring to the meaning of Jesus’ birth, Francis said: “Today this message goes out to the ends of the Earth to reach all peoples, especially those scarred by war and harsh conflicts that seem stronger than the yearning for peace.”

Earlier this year, the Pope told the Polish people that “life must always be welcomed and protected. These two things go together – welcome and protection, from conception to natural death.”

During the pope’s speech, addressed to government authorities, Pope Francis encouraged the state to reach out and help expectant mothers.

“All of us are called to respect life and care for it,” he said. “On the other hand, it is the responsibility of the State, the Church and society to accompany and concretely help all those who find themselves in serious difficulty, so that a child will never be seen as a burden but as a gift, and those who are most vulnerable and poor will not be abandoned.” . . . Hamilton” Creator Raises Money for Planned Parenthood . . .

. . . Calls Abortion Biz a “Beacon of Hope”

For liberal entertainment icon and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, progressive activism is a family operation. Now, he and his parents have coordinated a sweepstakes to raise money for Planned Parenthood.

During the 2016 election season, Miranda made no secret of his avid support for Hillary Clinton, LGBT rights and abortion access. But these passions certainly run in the family. Lin’s father, Luis, has helped manage senate campaigns for Clinton, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. His mother, Luz Towns-Miranda, is a psychologist and Planned Parenthood board member. Thus, it was no surprise when she waxed eloquent about the abortion provider in a December 22 personal essay about women’s rights for Vogue magazine.

After opening with the story of a high school classmate who disappeared from school after an unintended pregnancy, Towns-Miranda enthused: “Planned Parenthood was then, and is now, a beacon of hope, and a safe place.” She even went so far as to call it “one of the country’s most trusted organizations.”

. . . If she had aborted Lin-Manuel, there would be no Hamilton. How many other creative and innovative people, performances and products don’t exist today because they never made it into the world? Something to think about. . . . Read More

Abortion Activists Post Pro-Abortion Signs Outside Pro-Life VP-Elect Mike Pence’s DC Home

Abortion activists continue to try to shame incoming pro-life Vice President elect Mike Pence. First they made thousands of donations to the Planned Parenthood abortion business in his name. Now residents of the neighborhood where Pence and his family will live are posting pro-abortion signs near his home and another attempt to shame him for holding pro-life views that protect women and unborn children.

The signs say Trust Women, as if opposing killing unborn children in abortions doesn’t trust women. The signs represent the same kind of backwards and convoluted thinking abortion activist have been guilty of for decades. They equate the destruction of human life with a respect for women as they ignore the damaging effects abortions have on women ranging from medical and physical problems to mental health issues. . . . NPR Diane Rehm, Who Starved Her Husband to Death, Retires After 37 Years

NPR talk-show host Diane Rehm has finally retired from the microphone at NPR after 37 years. Rehm is best known in pro-life circles for starving her husband to death.

As NPR reports today: Rehm is wrapping up a public radio career spanning more than four decades and thousands of episodes. Her talk show has originated at Washington, D.C.’s WAMU and is heard by nearly 3 million people across the country weekly on NPR stations.

A low point for Rehm occurred last year during election season. Relying on fabricated Internet reports, she asked Bernie Sanders about his supposed dual American and Israeli citizenship — only he doesn’t have dual citizenship.

The Diane Rehm Show signs off the air Friday, . . . .

Millions of pro-life people will never forget Rehm helped her husband John commit suicide by choosing not to eat or drink, then agitated for “right to die” laws that would legalize assisted suicide.

. . . Rehm is now becoming a fundraiser for “Compassion & Choices,” formerly known as the Hemlock Society.

“How many hosts on taxpayer-funded talk shows will be testifying on a hot-button issue like euthanasia before Congress? How can anyone expect her to offer fairness when this issue comes to her own program? No one can imagine an NPR star testifying against abortion or against assisted suicide. They’re far too “progressive” for that,” (Tim) Grahm (Newsbusters) said. . . . Read More:

Out Going US UN Ambassador Implies Africans Condone Murder of Homosexuals

Outgoing US Ambassador
Samantha Power
NEW YORK, December 23 (C-Fam): In what can only be considered well outside the bounds of customarily polite diplomatic discourse at UN headquarters, a visibly agitated US Ambassador Samantha Power accused African delegations of being complicit in the murder of homosexuals who are thrown off rooftops in ISIS-held cities.

Power’s overcharged statement stood in contrast to an unusually hushed UN chamber that underlined the uncertainty of the outcome of a vote challenging the establishment of a UN monitor on homosexual rights by the Human Rights Council in June. . . .

It was something of final and unforeseeable gift to the Obama administration that for eight years has prioritized homosexual rights at the United Nations and around the world.

Invoking the Orlando massacre, Samantha Power asked, “Why would any member state stand in the way of preventing that kind of violence?” suggesting Africans were also complicit in the islamic terrorist-inspired slaughter of homosexuals at the gay nightclub earlier this year. . . . Read More

Man Drives “Car Bomb” Into Pro-Life Organization’s Headquarters

A Christian pro-life organization in Australia was damaged by an explosion on Wednesday in what pro-lifers believe was a “targeted attack,” the BBC reports.

Australian Capital Territory Police said a 35-year-old man parked a van filled with bottles of gas right outside the Australia Christian Lobby headquarters in Canberra and lit them, causing an explosion that damaged the building and destroyed the vehicle. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Canberra time, ABC Australia reports.

ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton told ABC that he is glad no one was in the building when the explosion occurred. He said the ground floor windows were blown out, and the van tires melted into the concrete outside the building. . . . The Australia Christian Lobby advocates for the right to life by working to stop abortion and euthanasia, as well as other religious causes in Australia.  . . . Read More

106 Democrats Ask President-Elect Trump to Force Americans to Pay for Abortions

John Lewis, Sheila Jackson Lee & Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
were among the Democrat lawmakers who signed
the Pro-Abortion/Death letter.
If President-Elect Donald Trump keeps his campaign promises, he intends to defund Planned Parenthood, nominate pro-life justices to the Supreme Court, endorse the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act banning abortions after 20 weeks, and make permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions.

However, 106 Democrats in Congress are not so happy about this, and wrote the president-elect a letter expressing their discontent, New York Magazine reports.

“These bans restrict the health coverage of millions of women of reproductive age across the country,” the Democrats’ letter states. “For too long, low-income women and women of color have shouldered the burden of our country’s restrictive reproductive health laws. We ask that you send a strong signal that this will no longer be the legacy of the United States.”

In the letter, the Democratic lawmakers also urge Trump to change his mind and repeal of the Hyde Amendment and other legal restrictions on abortion.

First passed in 1976, the Hyde Amendment was an appropriations rider banning taxpayer funding of abortions in certain federally subsidized healthcare programs. Prior to enactment, 50 million taxpayer and Medicaid dollars were spent on 300,000 abortions each year, the Federalist reports. . . . Read More

Is Obama Anti-Christmas?

President Obama made the following remarks in a recent NPR interview: “I’ve had to live through controversies like the notion that I was trying to kill Christmas. Right? Well, where’d that come from? Well, I bet, you know, well, he said Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. So, that, you know, that must be evidence of him either not being a Christian or not caring about Christmas. It—it sounds funny now, but you’ll have entire debates in conservative circles around that.”

Bill Donohue comments: Well, you know, there is evidence of Obama not caring about Christmas, and it didn’t emanate from conservative circles. Here it is.

The cover story of the July 23, 2008 edition of People magazine featured a picture of Barack and Michelle Obama, and their two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. People reported that “The kids receive no birthday or Christmas presents from Mom and Dad, who spend ‘hundreds’ on birthday slumber parties and, as Barack puts it, ‘want to teach some limits.'”

On December 7, 2009, weeks before the Obamas celebrated their first Christmas in the White House, I said in a news release, “If the Obamas want to deprive their children of celebrating Christmas, that is their business. It is the business of the public to hold them accountable for the way they celebrate Christmas in the White House.”

What I was referring to was a December 7, 2009 news story in the New York Times by Sheryl Gay Stolberg. She wrote, “When former social secretaries gave a luncheon to welcome Ms. [Desirée] Rogers earlier this year, one participant said, she surprised them by suggesting the Obamas were planning a ‘non-religious Christmas….”

“The lunch conversation inevitably turned to whether the White House would display its crèche, customarily placed in a prominent spot in the East Room,” Stolberg wrote. “Ms. Rogers, this participant said, replied that the Obamas did not intend to put the manger scene on display—a remark that drew an audible gasp from the tight-knit social secretary sisterhood. (A White House official confirmed that there had been internal discussions about making Christmas more inclusive and whether to display the crèche.)”

The person whom the Obamas chose to oversee Christmas decorations in 2009 was Simon Doonan, the head of creative services for Barneys in New York. A website,, posted pictures of some of the Christmas tree ornaments. They featured such religious figures as Mao Zedong, a genocidal maniac, and various drag queens. Fox News did a story on this issue as well; it aired December 22, 2009.

None of this was a mistake. The Obamas chose Doonan because of his stellar Christmas reputation.

I had a showdown with Doonan in 1994 when I protested the store’s “Hello Kitty Nativity Scene.” It was more than a spoof of the traditional nativity scene—it showed a kitten Virgin Mary posed with her legs spread wearing an undergarment that left six nipples in evidence.

On December 9, 1994, after someone called the Catholic League office to complain, I personally confronted store officials at the 61st Street and Madison Avenue store: I told them they had 45 minutes to remove the offensive crèche. They didn’t budge. Then I hit the air waves. Within hours, it was removed. Doonan called me saying he was surprised by the reaction of New Yorkers. I quickly brought him up to speed, explaining that Catholics were no longer going to tolerate this kind of intolerance.

Obama says conservatives lie when they say he is uncaring about Christmas. Yet he and his wife refuse to give their children Christmas presents; they gave serious consideration to censoring a White House crèche; they hired a man to be in charge of Christmas decorations who is known for trashing Christmas; and they displayed Christmas tree ornaments in the White House featuring pictures of mass murderers and kinky men.

Wonder who fed the idea that Obama is not exactly Christmas-friendly?

Texas Will Defund Planned Parenthood . . .

. . . Cancels $3.1 Million in Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Biz

Texas officials gave final notice to Planned Parenthood on Tuesday that its taxpayer funding is going away.

The abortion chain in Texas currently receives $3.1 million in Medicaid funds. The final notice from the Texas Health and Human Services on Tuesday told the abortion group that it will be kicked out of the taxpayer-funded program in 30 days, the Texas Tribune reports.

State officials said Planned Parenthood’s potentially illegal sales of aborted babies’ body parts was a key reason for the move.

In the final notice letter, department Inspector General Stuart Bowen said the undercover videos that exposed Planned Parenthood’s actions showed that “Planned Parenthood violated state and federal law.” He said the abortion group showed a “willingness to charge more than the costs incurred for procuring fetal tissue.”

“Your misconduct is directly related to whether you are qualified to provide medical services in a professionally competent, safe, legal and ethical manner,” Bowen wrote in the letter. “Your actions violate generally accepted medical standards, as reflected in state and federal law, and are Medicaid program violations that justify termination.”

Several weeks ago, a U.S. Congressional investigation released evidence that Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Texas “broke the law when it sold aborted baby remains for profit to the University of Texas.” The U.S. House panel referred the case to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for further review. . . . Donald Trump’s Pick to Head Budget Office Voted to Defund Planned Parenthood

U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, South Carolina
President-elect Donald Trump picked another pro-life leader to join his administration this past week.

On Saturday, Trump chose U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina to head the Office of Management and Budget. The choice upset abortion advocates, who quickly drew attention to Mulvaney’s efforts to defund the abortion business Planned Parenthood.

“We are going to do great things for the American people with Mick Mulvaney leading the Office of Management and Budget,” Trump said in a statement. “… With Mick at the head of OMB, my administration is going to make smart choices about America’s budget, bring new accountability to our federal government, and renew the American taxpayer’s trust in how their money is spent.”

Mulvaney has a 100-percent pro-life voting record from the National Right to Life Committee. On his website, he says he is “committed to promoting legislation that will protect the unborn.” . . . Read More

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

by Kerby Anderson, Contributing Author: It is estimated that Charles Wesley wrote over 6500 hymns. Perhaps his best- known hymn is “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing.” Over the years it has been edited slightly, but the meaning and theology remains as he wrote it more than two centuries

It begins with a proclamation of the birth of Jesus: “Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.”

The hymn reminds us why Christ came to earth. Jesus came into the world to bring peace, but many who sing this song fail to realize that it was to bring peace between us and God. Wesley’s hymn reminds us that His birth was so that God and sinners would be reconciled. We are the sinners in this hymn, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). All we like sheep have gone astray (Isaiah 53:6). We have broken God’s commandments and need to be reconciled with God. This was done when Christ died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3).

This hymn by Charles Wesley goes on to describe who Jesus Christ is. “Christ by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come, offspring of the Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail the incarnate Deity,

Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel.” This is the wonder of the Incarnation. Jesus (the second person of the Trinity) became the “offspring of the Virgin’s womb.” God became man and was “veiled in flesh” even though He was the “incarnate Deity.” Jesus was our Emmanuel. The name Emmanuel means “God with us.” So even though Jesus became man, he did not lose His deity.

This Christmas week, let us once again reflect upon the Incarnation. How wonderful yet mysterious that God would become man and dwell among us. And that He would be willing to die on a cross for our sins.

49% of Americans Said Abortion Affected Their Vote for President

President-Elect Donald Trump
Wins Electoral College Vote!
ARRA News Service
The Electoral College votes were officially cast yesterday, making Donald Trump and running mate, Mike Pence, the next U.S. President and VP by a tally of 303-232. All six GOP Kansas electors voted for Trump/Pence. The results will be finalized Jan. 6, 2017, with the inauguration two weeks later.

For the first time ever, the 2016 election was clearly a referendum on abortion. Political parties and their presidential candidates publicly staked out totally opposite positions–unlike past campaigns in which most candidates tried to minimize positions on controversial issues.

Hillary Clinton made abortion-on-demand a cornerstone issue of her 2016 campaign: abortion available at any time up until delivery, and at taxpayer’s expense by eliminating the Hyde amendment. And despite the national furor over the sale of aborted baby parts to the highest bidder, Clinton wanted to expand taxpayer funding to America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.

The nation heard an authentic horror in Trump’s words during the Oct. 20, 2016 national presidential debate: “Well I think it is terrible. If you go with what Hillary is saying, in the ninth month you can take [the] baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby. Now, you can say that that is okay and Hillary can say that that is okay, but it’s not okay with me. Because based on what she is saying and based on where she’s going and where she’s been, you can take [the] baby and rip the baby out of the womb. In the ninth month. On the final day. And that’s not acceptable.

“Donald Trump gave 100% pro-life answers to National Right to Life’s questions, met with pro-life leaders of National Right to Life and made campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, a strong, well known pro-life advocate, a public face of his campaign. At the same time Hillary Clinton made seemingly countless appearances at Planned Parenthood events pledging over and over her fealty to their abortion agenda. . . . Read More

It’s just no fun anymore for PPFA

Betty Cockrum, the CEO of Planned
Parenthood of Indiana and Kentuck
by Dave Andrusko: Geez, you have to feel sorry, NOT!!, for Betty Cockrum, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky. In fact for all of Planned Parenthood.

. . . “When your fellow CEOs say, ‘It’s just no fun anymore. It just gets harder by the day,’ that’s tough,” Cockrum said. “You just got to go shoulder to shoulder and keep each other going.”

No fun!

No smiles as your organization traffics in the organs of aborted babies? No whoop and hollering when the annual tally kept by the national office goes over 300,000 dead babies mark? No laughter when your deep-pocketed legal representatives are able to enjoin a law that does no more than give women the opportunity to view an ultrasound of their child at least 18 hours prior to performing abortions?

But Cockrum, who made $175,000+ in 2015, will not give in. . . . [Editor's Note: Sick - “Get out of PPFA, now!”]

DC Becomes "The Death Capitol" of America

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser
Compassion and Choices – the formerly named Hemlock Society – boldly and happily announced that “D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Signs Death with Dignity Act.” We read

“We are very grateful to Mayor Bowser and the D.C. Council for honoring their constituents’ wishes by enacting this legislation,” said Donna Smith, D.C. field and legislative manager for Compassion & Choices. “Every terminally ill adult should have the freedom and liberty to make their own decisions about how they want to die in comfort and peace, in consultation with their family, physicians and spiritual leaders.”We may never know Bowser’s personal opinion about the wisdom of unleashing the assisted suicide juggernaut. Back in October the Washington Post wrote . . . Compassion and Choices is feeling its oats. On November 8, Colorado voters approved Proposition 106, known as the “End of Life Options Act” which will legalize assisted suicide.

Colorado becomes the 5th state to legalize the dangerous practice joining California, Oregon, Washington, and Vermont. Additionally, the Supreme Court of Montana allows a doctor to raise the defense that a person consented, if prosecuted or sued for assisting in a suicide.

UN's New Top Bureacrat Raises Hopes

Newly appointed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D., Managing Editor, C-FAM: The UN swore-in a new Secretary-general this week. Antonio Guterres' track record (as former Portuguese prime minister) inspires cautious optimism from pro-life and pro-family group after a decade of aggressive activism by his predecessor. Lisa Correnti and Stefano Gennarini report.

Pro-family leaders from around the world gathered in Cape Town to launch a declaration on strengthening recognition and protection of marriage and family. Marianna Orlandi reports.

At Turtle Bay and Beyond, we've posted my brief interview on the John Batchelor Show about the remarkable news that China may begin to depopulate in 2018, decades sooner than expected. And Rebecca Oas exposes a worrisome debate in a top medical journal about suppressing as "ideological" evidence showing that abstinence and fidelity make people healthier and happier.

Pro-Life Reflection: Mary was afraid …

by Fr. Frank Pavone: This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at:

“She was greatly troubled by his words…” (Luke 1:29)

Reflection: Mary was afraid and uncertain in the face of her unexpected pregnancy. In Advent, believers throughout the world spiritually rush to her side to eagerly await with her the birth of the Savior.

The best way for us to celebrate Christmas is to rush physically to the side of those in the community who, like Mary, are uncertain and afraid about their pregnancy. Let us strengthen them to choose life.

Prayer: Father, I pray for those who are pregnant but afraid to be mothers. Through the prayers of Mary, give them strength, and enable me to reach out to them. Amen!

Counting Our Pro-Life Blessings At Christmas

Pro-life President-elect Donald Trump
by Dave Andrusko, National Right to Life: Just my two cents worth, but I strongly suspect there were an awful lot of pro-lifers who do not fully grasp that our Movement–and the unborn babies for whom we fight –just avoided a major catastrophe. So unsure were they of Donald Trump that they took their eye off of a dead-mortal certainty.

Which was? That if Hillary Clinton became President, not only would the International Abortion Industry have a patron in the most powerful office in the world, she would do her best to extinguish the Right to Life Movement.

I’m exaggerating for effect, right? No, I’m not. Let me explain why before I return to why NRLC’s support for Trump, along with that of other pro-life organizations, was right, proper, and desperately needed.

It was no accident–Clinton’s comment about the “deplorables,” that is. She knew her comments were public, but Clinton unabashedly (and to loud applause) announced that at least half of Trump’s supporters were the worst kind of people you could imagine.

Watch that speech sometime. She meant people exactly like you and me, people who do not have hundreds of millions in the bank and access to whatever they want like the Clintons do.

Please don’t forget that the people around her were anti-Catholic to the core. As Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen wrote a few months ago, a then—recently released trove of emails — which, according to WikiLeaks, come from the accounts of Clinton staff — showed “the rampant anti-Catholic bigotry that permeates Clinton World,” including creating and/or nurturing front groups to destabilize the Catholic Church.

Consider her comment to the 2015 Women in the World Summit about how “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.” Hillary Clinton and the kinds of people she associates with are militant pro-abortion radicals, elitists who can’t wait to re-educate “your standard redneck,” Bill Clinton’s description of Donald Trump’s base.

Mrs. Clinton and those around here have no respect for you and have only contempt for your religious liberties. You and I must be re-habilitated.

Mr. Trump was not conversant with the abortion issue, something that is not uncommon. He stumbled coming out of the block. He brought on pro-life Kellyanne Conway to run his campaign, met with members of the NRLC executive committee, and began to make his position clear.

I understand, as it is with any president, that actions speak louder than words. (Clinton had both words and actions to prove her unswervable commitment to abortion on demand.) But Trump was very, very specific in his avowals and is off to a great start in his cabinet appointments.

Trump said he would nominate only pro-lifers to the Supreme Court in the mold of the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Trump also promised to make “the Hyde Amendment permanent law to protect taxpayers from having to pay for abortions.”

He pledged to sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide. And Trump vowed to defund Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions, and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.

After the election, he reaffirmed to 60 Minutes’ Leslie Stahl that he is pro-life and would nominate only pro-life justices to the Supreme Court.

In addition to having pro-life Gov. Mike Pence as the vice president, over the last three weeks Trump’s appointments have already included Sen. Jeff Sessions as Attorney General; Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of Health and Human Services; Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus to be chief of staff; South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations; Dr. Ben Carson as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Rep. Mike Pompeo to be director of the CIA; and Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education; Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who will be the ambassador to China, and Andy Puzder, who will head the Department of Labor.

As we discuss in a second editorial, the abortion issue in the context of the future of the Supreme Court, was a huge advantage for President-elect Trump, including (especially?) in making the breaches he did in the “Blue Wall,” Midwestern states Democrats just don’t lose.

Until November 8.

From a single-issue pro-life perspective, we know we contributed to Mr. Trump’s victory. Like President-elect Trump, we have much to celebrate this Christmas season.
