UN Event Shames Protectors of Child Trafficking, Prostitution

by Marianna Orlandi, Ph.D.: “Decriminalization of prostitution is the most monstrous, preposterous, counterproductive act we could possibly conceive,” a prostitution survivor declared at a UN high-level meeting on human trafficking yesterday.

Rachel Moran, a modern day abolitionist, was a victim of prostitution from the age of fourteen to twenty-two. She condemned Amnesty International’s “sex-work” and “pro-decriminalization” language saying, “they do not have a right to call themselves a human rights organization.”

Her rebuke came during a two-day event hosted by the twenty-three countries making up the Group of Friends United Against Trafficking and C-Fam, publisher of the Friday Fax. Former Congresswoman and Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann moderated. It was the second human trafficking event they hosted in six months, reflecting the urgency of the issue and the frustration over lack of progress.

Speakers focused on internet buying and selling of children, child sexual abuse, and child pornography. Panel chair Dr. Susan Yoshihara warned that some material was deeply disturbing but necessary to understand the truth. Wednesday night, two movie screenings demonstrated that selling one’s body is never a choice.

I am Jane Doe, by movie director Mary Mazzio and producer Alec Sokolow, highlighted the ongoing battle of American mothers against, the website where their children were sold for sex and abuse. Their legal case is opposed by Google, George Soros and others, but fiercely fought for by Congresswomen Ann Wagner.

“Internet has become a red-light district,” Wagner told the audience. The Missouri lawmaker has gained 148 co-sponsors for her bill to amend the 1996 law that gives blanket immunity to websites that sell children. She urged the audience to call their representative in support. Camille Cooper, Director at PROTECT, shocked the audience with U.S. data on child-pornography. 19% of victims are under the age of three and 80% of child-pornography involves penetration. “This is what child pornography is about,” Cooper said, “not pictures of children taking a bath.” . . . Duck Dynasty Star: U.S. ‘Will Collapse’ If It Continues To ‘Saughter Its Offspring’

Campaigning for Alabama Senate Candidate Judge Roy Moore this week, Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson warned that the U.S. will collapse if it continues to slaughter its offspring.

At the Monday night rally, Robertson recited a portion of chapter one of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans. “Since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved man to do what ought not to be done. They became filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity.”

“Sounds like America, doesn’t it? I’m quoting what the apostle Paul said 2,000 years ago,” Robertson told the crowd. “When you look on our streets in America, you see people running around with signs on top of their head, all puffed up … won’t even acknowledge the flag of the United States of America – the national anthem! You say what in the world’s going on? They’re senseless! Faithless!”

“Remember, as soon as you get God out of your psyche, he’s giving you a list after list … of what people do,” expounding on Paul’s letter. “They not only do these things, but they approve of those who practice them.”

“When a nation slaughters its offspring – one million a year – they always collapse those nations do – you can’t do that!” Robertson added. . . . Read More

ICYMI: New York Court of Appeals Rejects Assisted Suicide

In Case You Missed It: . . . . The New York Court of Appeals released its decision in the case of Myers v. Schneiderman. In this case, the plaintiffs sought to establish a “right” to physician-assisted suicide under the Constitution of the State of New York.

In a 5-0 decision, the Court of Appeals has rejected the plaintiffs’ claims and has affirmed that the state’s existing laws against physician-assisted suicide are constitutional. Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, made the following remarks:

“All New Yorkers should cheer today’s decision in the case of Myers v. Schneiderman. Confronted with a controversial and emotionally charged case, the New York Court of Appeals has done the right thing in declining the plaintiffs’ invitation to legislate from the bench.

The Court’s decision does three important things. First, it demonstrates respect for the Constitution of the State of New York. Nothing in our state’s Constitution in any way affirms physician-assisted suicide, and the Court acknowledged that reality. Second, the decision upholds the role of the Legislature as policymaker. Third, the decision recognizes that the state ‘has a significant interest in preserving life and preventing suicide, a serious public health problem.’”

Rev. McGuire concluded, “Today’s decision from the Court of Appeals will save lives. Now that this court battle is over, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms looks forward to continued success in defeating efforts to pass physician-assisted suicide legislation. Our state can do better than physician-assisted suicide, and people living with terminal illnesses deserve better than assisted suicide.” . . . Albany Update

Federal Court Leaves Arkansas Pro-Life Law in Place

ARRA News Service: Today, the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals announced it will not reconsider a pro-life ruling issued last July.

In 2015, the Arkansas Legislature passed the Abortion-Inducing Drugs Safety Act sponsored by Rep. Charlene Fite (R – Van Buren). The law requires clinics performing chemical abortions to maintain a contract with a doctor who has admitting privileges at a hospital. Federal Judge Kristine Baker's injunction prevented enforcement of an Arkansas law requiring abortion providers to have a contract with a physician who has hospital admitting privileges.

In July, a three-judge panel from the Eighth Circuit of Appeals reversed that judge’s order. State Attorney General Leslie Rutledge cheered the ruling, a victory for opponents of abortion. Planned Parenthood.

However, the plaintiff in the case, denounced it, said it was out of step with U.S. Supreme Court precedent and that its fight would continue. The panel’s decision was appealed to the entire Eighth Circuit of Appeals. Today, the Eighth Circuit announced it would not reconsider the case, meaning the panel’s decision from July still stands.

This is a pro-life victory. The Abortion-Inducing Drugs Safety Act is a good law that ought to be enforced.

The Arkansas Legislature passed it with strong support, and Attorney General Rutledge’s office has defended it in court since Day One. We look forward to other good decisions like this one in the future.

NFL Players Protest Racism, But What About the 270 Black Babies Planned Parenthood Kills Every Day?

Finally! NFL players across the country took a knee to protest the systemic racism and unjustified deaths that have plagued black communities for decades. Using their broadcast platform, socially-conscious athletes showed the world that they would not stand for the injustices done by those in power. Players, black and white, displayed solidarity against the killing of unarmed black lives through state-funded violence. They declared an end to Planned Parenthood.

Oh, wait. Nope. That wasn’t the story splashed on every #fakenews front page or the endless dialogue of sports commentators and liberal pundits. Planned Parenthood kills nearly 270 black lives every single day, but sure…let’s talk about the “systemic racism” of police (both black and white I might add) who kill more white people than black people every year.

In 2016, 963 lives were killed by police (whether justified or not). That’s 32 less deaths than in 2015. The Washington Post database provides the racial breakdown: 466 were white (or 48.3%), and 233 were black (24.2%). Of those killed 690 (or 71.7%) were armed with a deadly weapon. Only five percent, or 48 people, were determined to be ‘unarmed’. . . . . . . . Read More

As Babies Die in Abortion, Law School Will Hold Symposium on the “Rights of Nature”

The movement to grant “nature” human type rights continues with insufficient pushback. In fact, law schools are getting into the act. The first annual “Rights of Nature Symposium” will be held at Tulane University Law School in October.

And now, nature has apparently received its (her?) official victimhood designation.

If you are a bigot against nature, you are a nasty resourcist who is guilty of “resourcism.” From the San Diego Free Press story:

The most fearless environmental philosophers – thinkers like Susan Griffin, Neil Evernden, Derrick Jensen, and John Livingston – have insisted that we will never be safe so long as the natural world we depend on is objectified and valued only for the way humans use it.

Livingston calls the objectification of nature “resourcism” and explains: “A ‘resource’ is anything that can be put to human use … It is the concept of ‘resource’ that allows us to perceive nature as our subsidiary.” Livingston notes that once the nonhuman “is perceived as having some utility – any utility – and is thus perceived as a ‘resource,’ its depletion is only a matter of time.”

Because our legal system currently defines nature as property, “resourcism” is institutionalized in American law. While climate change worsens, water continues to be polluted, and the collapse of every major ecosystem on the continent intensifies, we must conclude that our system of law fails to protect the natural world and fails to protect the human and nonhuman communities who depend on it.
I think it would be more encompassing to call it “earthism,” and those who discriminate against any aspect of nature could be called “earthist.” But why give them ideas?

It’s easy to laugh. But in the last few years, three rivers and two glaciers have been declared to be “persons” entitled to rights. The “river rights” movement has also been launched in the US. . . . . Read More

Liberals Ban Art With Impunity

by Bill Donohue: When the Catholic League objects to anti-Catholic art, we are routinely labeled censors by the artistic community, but when some of their liberal colleagues object to art that offends them—such as treating lizards “inhumanely”—there is little outrage, and no name calling. Indeed, even when real threats of violence are made, the grand defenders of artistic expression refuse to sound the alarms.

Where is the outrage by the media, the artistic community, and free speech activists over the Guggenheim’s decision to nix three works from an exhibition that is set to open on October 6? Where is the outrage over the Walker Art Center’s decision to dismantle a sculpture erected in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden?

Animal rights zealots took aim at the Guggenheim for showcasing three works as part of its exhibition, “Art and China After 1989: Theater of the World.” Indian tribal activists took aim at the Walker Art Center for displaying “Scaffold,” a two-story structure by Sam Durant that depicted seven executions, including the hanging of 38 Dakota Indian men in Minnesota after 1862.

The first artwork banned by the Guggenheim is a video showing four pairs of pit bulls on nonmotorized treadmills; they are portrayed as charging at each other, though they never touch. There is a second video that shows two pigs copulating in front of a live audience. The third work is an installation—considered the real gem by the New York Times—that features hundreds of live lizards, crickets, and other reptiles and insects racing around eating each other under a warming lamp.

Over the summer, Indian leaders—not rank-and-file Indians—were up in arms over the Minneapolis exhibit. Not surprisingly, they were not consulted by the diversity dons at the Walker Art Center (white liberals never believe their own rules apply to them) which is one reason the Indians objected; they also said it brought back bad memories. In the end, they got more than what they wanted: The installation was not only dismantled, the newly sensitized white liberals recycled the steel from the structure and the wood was given to the Dakotas for “burial.”

The ASPCA and PETA were furious with the Guggenheim, as was entertainer Ricky Gervais. They should not be so self-righteous.

From 1894 to 1994, the ASPCA in New York City killed virtually all the unadopted pets in its care. More recently, its passion for animal rights led it to smear Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, accusing it of animal cruelty. The charges were false: In 2012 the ASPCA was forced to pay Ringling Bros. $9.3 million in a settlement.

PETA kills almost all the cats and dogs in its possession. In fact, it kills 95 percent of adoptable pets in its care. Yet its leader, Ingrid Newkirk, maintains it is unethical to swat mosquitoes. She is also known for cheapening the Holocaust: “Six million Jews died in concentration camps,” she told the Washington Post, “but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses.”

Gervais will go to the mat to protect the life of animals, just so long as they are not human. There is not an animal rights cause he will not champion, nor is there a pro-abortion cause he will not support. For example, when Texas state senator Wendy Davis conducted a filibuster protesting abortion restrictions, Gervais said it secured her place in “the pantheon of American heroes.”

Though these big name activists were quite vocal in expressing their displeasure with the Guggenheim, what made the famous museum buckle was not advocacy, it was the threat of violence. “Explicit and repeated threats of violence made our decision necessary,” the Guggenheim said.
William "Bill" Donohue is President of the Catholic League.

Are You mad? Senate Republicans Pulled Their Health Care Bill

by Brian Burch, CatholicVote:   This means the push to reform Obamacare will NOT happen this year.

The truth is, 49 Republican Senators made a good faith attempt to unwind the disastrous and immoral Obamacare trainwreck. Among other things, the bill would have:
  • Abolished the individual and employee mandates that forced people to purchase insurance they don’t want, including the poor.
  • Defunded abortion giant Planned Parenthood.
  • Stopped tax credits for insurance that funds elective abortions.
  • Sent block grants to states to innovate, and help lower premiums.
The bill was abandoned today because it fell at least one vote short.

Both Trump and Pence lobbied members of the Senate to pass an Obamacare replacement. But Republicans John McCain (AZ), Rand Paul (KY), Susan Collins (ME), and Lisa Murkowski (AK) stood in the way.

Next month, millions of hard-working families will get sticker shock once again when their monthly health care premiums continue to skyrocket.

As I’ve said before, having just 52 Republicans in the Senate allows just three Senators to torpedo legislation. This unfortunate reality is the direct result of Democrat opposition to any GOP plan. Democrats have offered two unacceptable alternatives: 1) spend billions to bail out Obamacare and big insurance companies, or 2) Bernie Sanders’ crackpot socialized “medicare for all.”

...and every Democrat plan includes taxpayer-funded abortion.

Here’s the truth: Yes, we stopped Hillary Clinton from becoming president last year. But it’s now obvious that if we hope to achieve any significant reforms, we’re going to need reinforcements. And that means defeating vulnerable Democrats and Republicans who are getting in the way.

Here’s a list of the most vulnerable Senators up for re-election next year where CV is already focusing our resources:

Missouri: Pro-abortion “Catholic” Claire McCaskill is considered one of the most vulnerable Senators running for re-election next year;

Indiana: “Catholic” Joe Donnelly claims he’s pro-life but votes to fund abortion giant Planned Parenthood. Now he’s in trouble for investing in companies that outsource jobs to Mexico.

Pennsylvania: So-called “pro-life Democrat” Robert Casey, Jr. continues to betray Catholic voters despite his father’s proud pro-life legacy. Pennsylvania voters proved last year they are ready for change.

Montana: Current Democratic Senator Jon Tester has never shied from his support for abortion, earning the endorsement of the radical pro-abortion group NARAL. His probable opponent? Matt Rosendale, proud Catholic and defender of life. Remember Trump won Montana 56%-35% over Hillary.

North Dakota: “Catholic” Heidi Heitkamp is unabashed in her support for abortion. She has also voted against restoring religious liberty protections for Catholic schools and hospitals. But Trump defeated Hillary 63%-27% in the Peace Garden state. Heitkamp can be beat.

DID YOU KNOW: Democrats must defend Senate seats in every rust belt state won by Trump (WI, MI, PA, OH) next year?

Another blowout win next year will clear the deck for not only health care reform, but legislation on religious liberty, school choice, and of course… possible vacancies on the Supreme Court. Those Republicans standing in the way today will be irrelevant.

I am tired of losing these fights by 1 or 2 votes!

We need to regroup and come back stronger.

We need to elect solid, pro-life champions in 2018.

Leaders who are ready to fight for us.
P.S. It’s not all bad news. Just today, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-CA, announced a vote on protecting children in the womb. The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would prevent abortions on children in the 5th month of pregnancy and beyond.

The vote in the House is not expected to be difficult. They passed this same legislation two years ago.

The battle, it always seems, is in the Senate.

U.S. Reps Co-Sponsor Federal Pro-Life Bill

Jerry Cox, Contributing Author: Next week Congress will vote on the federal Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act of 2017.

This is a federal bill similar to a pro-life law the Arkansas Legislature passed in 2013. It prohibits abortion after the twentieth week of pregnancy, except in cases of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother.

All four of Arkansas’ U.S. representatives have joined 154 other members of Congress in co-sponsoring this good, federal bill.

Medical science shows unborn babies feel the pain of abortion — especially after the twentieth week of pregnancy. In 2000, Supreme Court Justice Kennedy described the abortion process, writing, “The fetus, in many cases, dies just as a human adult or child would: It bleeds to death as it is torn from limb from limb. . . . The fetus can be alive at the beginning of the dismemberment process and can survive for a time while its limbs are being torn off.”

Abortion is a horrific procedure. That’s one reason many states — including Arkansas — have passed laws prohibiting abortion after the twentieth week of pregnancy.

Read the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act of 2017.

How Scientistic Propaganda Has Miseducated Christians

Alan Keyes
by Dr. Alan Keyes: "Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new; for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us." (Ecclesiastes 1:10)

Is the whole present crisis of the United States due to the fact that many Americans who profess to be followers of Christ fail to walk the path he exampled for us? The Scripture reports that Christ had the power to transform material things, changing water into wine. He had the power to heal physical infirmities – to make the blind see and the lame walk. He could restore life to those who were dead, in every sense the human body could perceive. He could control he weather – calming the storm and transforming troubled waters into a firmament stable enough to stand and walk upon. With a blessing, he could make a few loaves and fishes suffice to feed thousands.

These feats once seemed beyond the reach of ordinary humanity – yet according to the creed most Christians profess, Christ performed them as a human being, albeit one who was nonetheless true, in substance, to the being of Being itself, which God is. Christ called upon all who were willing to heed him to make the perfection of God their standard of living. People can be excused if, for many centuries, they assumed that this was simply a metaphor. Yet in the past two centuries, human understanding has more and more discovered, in the God-endowed nature of material things, ways to produce results that hark back to the astonishing miracles attributed to the power of God in Christ.

For decades, the promoters of godless secularism have promoted the idea that human beings are now responsible for the use of powers never before imagined – powers that require the total transformation of human consciousness, powers that imply "evolution" beyond humanity, toward being superhuman. We must, therefore, imagine, impose, and accept new modes and orders, never before imagined – ways entirely incompatible with the ethics, conscience, and sensitivities of the weak, limited, almost contemptible "nature" of human existence, before the prospect of wielding godlike constructive and destructive power became something more than myth and fantasy.

This kind of pridefully secularist, scientistic propaganda has miseducated many people who profess to be followers of Christ, including some who are esteemed to be in authority in various churches and denominations. In consequence of this miseducation, they first invented, and have recently been seeking to impose, an understanding of Christian doctrine that purports to be a necessary response to our scientifically impelled evolution beyond the nature of humanity. So, they now openly promote the premise of the aforementioned secular propagandists, that the prospect of power we must now entertain renders old doctrines, bound by past concepts of humanity, obsolete. Into the old wineskins of Christian teachings about every aspect of human existence, we must pour the new wine of teachings reinvented to take account of hitherto unimagined possibilities of power, authority, and responsibility now in our grasp, or within our reach.

The disciples of these new doctrines pretend to offer their innovations under the rubric of "science" (as in Pope Francis' newly minted replacement for the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage, dubbed the "Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences"). According to this doctrine, since the discoveries of empirical science have confronted us with novel prospects of power, theology must approach all questions heretofore constrained by the assumption of God-endowed nature in a new way that takes account of those prospects and of the "evolution" beyond previous imagining they entail.

These purveyors of a purportedly novel doctrine are counting on the fact that the secularist propagandists, by abusing authority supposedly gleaned from the "miracles" of modern science, have cowed many Christians into a way of reading the Scriptures that glosses over passages that recount the miracles of old, or at best seeks to explain them away. Being thus ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they fail to ponder what was, in many respects, the most challenging aspect of his instruction.

Christ clearly foresaw the relationship of Divine and human power these prideful secularists pretend is so novel. Indeed, in his very existence Christ, embodied it. He was the Son of God who repeatedly referred to himself as the Son of Man – thereby affirming the consubstantial unity of his Divine and human nature. Some Christians have never accepted this affirmation, holding that the impure, imperfect nature of humanity is immiscible with the purely perfect Being of God. But Christ not only affirmed this consubstantiality in himself. He told those willing to listen to him to live according to its meaning. For he instructed us, saying "You are to be perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Christ did not see the perfection of God as something simply beyond the reach of the children of Man he was instructing. And when his disciples came to him, embarrassed because they could not imitate his miraculous powers, Christ did not rebuke their presumption. Instead, he again instructed them. His instruction encompassed his power to heal, his power over natural creatures, even his power over supernatural beings. With prayer and fasting, in the presence of the wholehearted trust in God which is faith, he made it clear that those who truly accepted and in action heeded him would be responsible for wielding powers consonant with the wisdom of the Word itself, through which all things were made.

Christ's example, his instructions, his commands, already teach all who are willing to walk in his way what they need to know to wield powers like those of the Creator, God Himself. Therefore, taken in the way Christ intended, the Gospel has, from the first, prepared Christians to wield, in Spirit and in Truth, the kind of power our empirical science is now beginning to understand in material terms. His teaching even foreshadows the day when we will know, in fact, that our very thoughts transcend the distinction between thought and action we still take for granted. Isn't this the implication of his instruction when he says: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28); or when he says, "If you have even a grain of faith, when you say to the mulberry tree 'Be uprooted and plant yourself in the sea,' it heeds you."

This is power akin to the power by which God said, "Be light," and light came to be. So, the powers we now envisage, to heal or to destroy, were not only imagined in Christ's teaching, they were assumed and fully taken into account.

So were the keys to making responsible use of them, to wit: to love God with the totality of our being and, therefore, obey his commands; and to love others as we love the Son of God, the Redeemer who came to save us and all God-ordered existence. Our science has made progress in understanding the rules that impel, order, and arrange the cosmos. But can it fathom the Ruler's love, which gives the cosmos meaning? Isn't God's love the spirit-filled heart of wisdom, beyond all knowing (Ephesians 3:19), by which those in Christ retrieved are brought to rest in God, and God alone? (Philippians 4:7)

Some Good News in the Battle Against Assisted Suicide

by Greg Schleppenbach: The movement to legalize doctor-assisted suicide has been gaining momentum in recent years. Since 2015, two states (California and Colorado) and the District of Columbia have joined Oregon, Washington State and Vermont in legalizing the deadly practice. And 28 states had assisted suicide bills introduced in 2017 with a handful coming very close to succeeding. Compassion & Choices, the leading assisted suicide proponent, has a well-organized and well-funded agenda that has been very effective in leading these efforts.

So, where’s the good news you may be asking?

Let’s start with those 28 states that had bills introduced to legalize assisted suicide. With almost all of these states’ legislatures having finished their work for 2017, not a single bill has succeeded so far. This success is largely due to the extraordinary work of broad based and bi-partisan coalitions that include disability-rights, medical, elder, minority, faith-based and pro-life groups.

What’s more, the only assisted-suicide-related legislation to succeed this year either prohibits or limits the practice. Alabama, for example, enacted a ban on the practice. Arizona enacted conscience protections for medical professionals (should the practice ever be legalized there).

There has also been good news from the judicial branch of government. In the last couple of years, court challenges to assisted suicide bans in Tennessee, New Mexico, Minnesota, Hawaii and, most recently, New York have all failed. New York’s highest court, in a unanimous ruling, affirmed lower court decisions concluding that there is no constitutional right to assisted suicide.

The next source of good news comes from the medical profession with the recent and very significant action by the American College of Physicians (ACP) to reaffirm its opposition to doctor-assisted suicide. Following a nearly two-year, multi-level review of its policy against assisted suicide, the ACP concluded that although there are arguments on both sides, “the ethical arguments against legalizing physician-assisted suicide remain most compelling.” Continuing, they say:

“[Physician-assisted suicide] is problematic given the nature of the patient-physician relationship, affects trust in the relationship and in the profession, and fundamentally alters the medical profession’s role in society. Furthermore, the principles at stake in this debate also underlie medicine’s responsibilities regarding other issues and the physician’s duties to provide care based on clinical judgment, evidence, and ethics. Society’s focus at the end of life should be on efforts to address suffering and the needs of patients and families, including improving access to effective hospice and palliative care. The ACP remains committed to improving care for patients throughout and at the end of life.”

In addition to the ACP, there are at least fourteen other medical organizations that oppose legalizing assisted suicide. The biggest among them, the American Medical Association, is currently reviewing its policy against assisted suicide and needs to hear from its members that the policy should be retained. AMA members will have an opportunity to weigh in at the group’s November House of Delegates meeting in Hawaii.

Opposition to assisted suicide by medical groups plays a significant role in defeating legislation to legalize the practice. Compassion & Choices knows this well, which is why they are working very hard to infiltrate and influence medical groups to, at least, take a neutral stance. We must see to it that they fail in this effort through prayer, advocacy and speaking out for the protection of those whose lives are at risk.
Greg Schleppenbach is Associate Director for the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Major US Doctors Group Slams Physician-assisted Suicide

by Michael Cook: The American College of Physicians, the second-largest physician group in the United States with 152,000 members, has declared that physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is unethical.

The ACP takes a forthright stand in the latest issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Supporting appendicies covering most of the arguments for and against physician-assisted suicide (PAS). Currently PAS is legal in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont, California, Colorado and the District of Columbia, following ballot initiatives, legislation or a court order.

Although the ACP recognises the depth of feeling in the debate, it has not budged from opposition. Its conclusion is:
The ACP does not support the legalization of physician-assisted suicide, the practice of which raises ethical, clinical, and other concerns. The ACP and its members, including those who might lawfully participate in the practice, should ensure that all patients can rely on high-quality care through to the end of life, with prevention or relief of suffering insofar as possible, a commitment to human dignity and management of pain and other symptoms, and support for families. Physicians and patients must continue to search together for answers to the challenges posed by living with serious illness before death. In a sense, the ACP position paper is very “traditional” in its concerns and arguments. It even jibs at woolly terminology used in the debate:Terms for physician-assisted suicide, such as aid in dying, medical aid in dying, physician-assisted death, and hastened death, lump categories of action together, obscuring the ethics of what is at stake and making meaningful debate difficult; therefore, clarity of language is important. And it endorses concerns about “slippery slopes”, even though this is often ridiculed by supporters of PAS:research suggests that a “slippery slope” exists in jurisdictions where physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia are legal. The position paper asks whether the goal of medicine is the elimination of all suffering:Just as medicine cannot eliminate death, medicine cannot relieve all human suffering; attempting to do so ultimately leads to bad medical care.It also points out that physicians gain power when PAS is legalised – it could be viewed as a return to paternalism. And it suggests that legalisation neglects other priorities:“advocating for physician-assisted suicide where there is no general right to health care and access to hospice and palliative care services is limited, especially in an era of health care cost containment, is ironic.”Would legalisation change the ethics of PAS for doctors? The ACP says No:Despite changes in the legal and political landscape, the ethical arguments against legalization of physician-assisted suicide remain the most compelling. We are mindful that ethics is not merely a matter for a vote. Majority support of a practice does not make it ethical. Medical history provides several cautionary examples of laws and practices in the United States (such as racial segregation of hospital wards) that were widely endorsed but very problematic.

John McCain Sabotages Senate Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood, No Vote Puts Bill in Jeopardy

John McCain will once again sabotage the Senate bill to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. The Arizona senator and former presidential candidate angered pro-life Americans earlier this year when he was a no vote on the previous reconciliation Bill to defund the nation’s biggest abortion company.

Now he’s doing it again. McCain will vote no on the latest version of the Planned Parenthood defunding bill, that also reveals portions of Obamacare. . . .

McCain joined two probation Republicans to defeat the Senate bill that would defund Planned Parenthood. Called the skinny Bill to repeal portions of Obamacare, pro-life organizations and Senate Republican leaders hoped the bill would get enough votes to be able to land a repeal and defund measure on President Donald Trump’s desk.

But thanks to Senator John McCain the measure failed. Even though McCain frequently votes pro-life and has voted to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business in the past, he joined pro-abortion Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine along with 48 Democrats to kill the measure.

According to the Washington Examiner, pro-life vice president Mike Pence was working with Senator McCain and the final hours leading up to the vote to no avail.

Last month, the abortion chain Planned Parenthood finally released its annual report.

The report shows increases in abortion numbers and taxpayer funding in 2015, alongside decreases in contraception, breast exams and overall patient numbers.

Planned Parenthood continued to maintain its status as the largest abortion provider in the United States. The abortion group performed 328,348 abortions on unborn babies, 4,349 more than the previous year, according to the report.

At the same time, it saw 2.4 million patients, about 100,000 fewer than the previous year and about 500,000 fewer than five years ago. Contraception services, which the abortion chain touts as its primary service, also dropped from 2.94 million to 2.8 million during the past two years.

Meanwhile, the abortion chain received more taxpayer funding. The report shows Planned Parenthood receiving $554.6 million, up from $553.7 million the previous year. This increase occurred while pro-abortion President Barack Obama was in power. . . . . Read More

Virginia Gov. Race Tied as Pro-Life Ed Gillespie Pulls Even With Pro-Abortion Ralph Northam

Ed Gillespie
A pitch for money by incumbent pro-abortion Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia , who is not up for re-election until 2018, drew me to a Suffolk University Poll which also talks about this year’s race for governor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

For much of the year pro-life Republican Ed Gillespie has trailed pro-abortion Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in the polls, sometimes by as much as 5- 7 points.

Not anymore.

The poll, released Monday, found Gillespie and Northam deadlocked at 42% . Twelve percent of the respondents were undecided while Libertarian Cliff Hyra drew 3%.

On June 7, National Right to Life endorsed Gillespie in the Republican Party primary. As NRLC noted at the time Gillespie has a long history of pro-life advocacy within the Republican Party. As chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ed Gillespie strongly supported the pro-life plank in the Republican platform. As Counselor to President George W. Bush, Gillespie championed pro-life Congressman Henry Hyde to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This year, Gillespie accompanied Vice President Mike Pence for his historic speech at the March for Life.

“Ed Gillespie is a strong advocate for life. As governor, he would support and sign pro-life legislation, including legislation to protect an unborn child from abortion at the point he or she can feel pain, and he opposes using taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion,” said David N. O’Steen, Ph.D., executive director of the National Right to Life Committee. “National Right to Life looks forward to working with him in Virginia to implement pro-life policies to protect unborn children from abortion, and medically dependent or disabled persons, whose lives are threatened by euthanasia and assisted suicide .”

By contrast, Northam’s record in the state Assembly was solidly pro-abortion. Planned Parenthood’s Virginia affiliate has endorsed Northam and pledged to spend $3 million in the race on behalf of Northam. . . . Read More

Pro-Life Group: If Rand Paul Doesn’t Vote to DeFund Planned Parenthood, He’s “on the Same Side”

A pro-life student organization is not happy that Senator Rand Paul has announced his opposition to the Graham-Cassidy Healthcare bill that would repeal portions of Obamacare and defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

The Kentucky senator says he opposes the legislation because it does not fully repeal Obamacare. However. leading pro-life groups are supporting the bill because it represents the only legitimate chance to pass a measure through Congress that would defund the nation’s biggest abortion company.

Today, Students for Life of America informed LifeNews that it will consider Rand Paul to be “on the same side” as Planned Parenthood if he does not vote for the legislation.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America told LifeNews: “We are calling on Senator Rand Paul to either support a pro-life health care reform bill, like Graham-Cassidy, or propose one that can pass now.

Hawkins continued, “The disastrous status quo that is Obamacare is harming families, using our taxpayer dollars to fund abortion, and line the pockets of Planned Parenthood’s billion dollar abortion industry. Voting against Graham-Cassidy would put Senator Paul on the same side as the abortion Goliath, Planned Parenthood.”

The pro-life student leader said, “Planned Parenthood has lied to the American public, committed fraud with taxpayer dollars, and has been proven to sell the body parts of babies they abort for profit. Yet, Congress continually fails to defund Planned Parenthood. The pro-life generation is sick of being told to wait until another election season has passed. We are expecting Congress to uphold their promises and stop subsidizing America’s largest abortion vendor.”

Hawkins says her group will be visiting Senator Rand Paul’s instate office and call on him to vote yes for Graham-Cassidy. Today, pro-life students visit Senator Rand Paul’s Kentucky office and call on him to vote for the bill as part of a national tour through the states of strategically chosen U.S. Senators and more than 90 college campuses. . . . . Senate Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood Will Cost the Abortion Biz $400 Million

Republicans certainly have a flair for the dramatic. With less than four working days to kill Obamacare, Senate hallways are already empty. With their repeal bill still hanging in the balance, members left town late Tuesday to mark the Jewish holidays — adding even more suspense to next week’s September 30th deadline. Even now, Republican leaders aren’t sure where their party will land on the plan from Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.). Although the push seems to be gaining steam, the results are anything but certain — as Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) reminded everyone the last time around.

One thing’s for sure: it will be an anxious few days for Planned Parenthood. Apart from Barack Obama, Cecile Richards’s group has the most to lose — almost $400 million a year, to be exact. Like the string of reconciliation bills before it, the Graham-Cassidy measure guts 86 percent of the organization’s Medicaid funding, putting a huge dent in the forced partnership between taxpayers and America’s biggest abortion business. That should be a major motivating factor for dozens of pro-life senators, who understand that this is conservatives’ best shot at ending the government’s direct deposit to a scandal-ridden organization.

Even Planned Parenthood admits it performs more abortions (328,348 in 2015 alone) than basic breast exams. That’s not difficult to believe since overall health screenings have dropped by half since 2011. Even contraception counseling, the group’s bread-and-butter, fell by 136,244. So what, exactly, are taxpayers funding? Certainly not the “comprehensive care” Richards advertises. Or even the volume of care, since Planned Parenthood saw 100,000 fewer patients in 2015 than the year before.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to change Senator Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) mind. The Kentucky pro-lifer insists he won’t vote for the Graham-Cassidy bill, despite the thousands of unborn lives it could save. . . . Read More

Ignorance of Religious Rights is Widespread

by Bill Donohue: The Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania has released a new survey on the public’s knowledge of basic constitutional rights; it is disturbing on many levels.

Every totalitarian movement in history, beginning with the French Revolution, has sought to crush conscience rights. That is because conscience rights are inextricably linked to religious rights, making freedom of religion the one right that totalitarian rulers fear most. This alone justifies a well-crafted civics program in the public schools. It is also cause for despair after reading the Annenberg survey.

More than a third of Americans, 37 percent, can’t name any of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. Nearly half, 48 percent, list freedom of speech as a guaranteed right, but only 15 percent can name freedom of religion. The results of other survey houses indicate that matters have gotten worse.

The First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University has been tracking this issue for decades. In 2014, it found that 68 percent were able to identify freedom of speech as a guaranteed right, but only 29 percent could name freedom of religion. Twenty years ago, the respective figures were 49 percent and 21 percent.

Why is it that knowledge of our First Amendment right to freedom of religion always trails our awareness of freedom of speech? Is it because the rights crusade that began in the 1960s is more often associated with free speech rights? Yet the efforts by Rev. Martin Luther King were anchored more in religious rights than free speech rights.

Why is it that we are apparently going backwards on both measures, especially on religious rights? To be exact, between 1997 and 2017, our knowledge of free speech as a First Amendment right slipped by 2 percent, but our knowledge of freedom of religion dropped by 29 percent. Is it because the public schools harbor a phobia, or worse, about religious expression?

We are currently witnessing an assault on our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and in both instances it is emanating largely from the schools: colleges and universities are doing a pitiful job defending freedom of speech on campus, and religious rights are increasingly imperiled at the elementary and secondary levels.

Freedom depends, in part, on our vigilance in protecting fundamental human rights. If the first freedom to go is freedom of religion—history shows that it is—then these survey findings are not encouraging. We are not likely to defend rights we barely know exist.
William "Bill" Donohue is President of the Catholic League.

Troubled Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Abortion Facility Closes

The embattled Hillcrest Women’s Medical Center has shut its doors.

Government sources have confirmed that Hillcrest has voluntarily relinquished its license to operate as an abortion facility.

The abortion center had until August 31st to fix the myriad of health and safety problems discovered during an inspection earlier this year. That inspection yielded an astounding 44 pages worth of violations.

The report, found on the Pennsylvania Health Department website dated July 8th, provided details of the myriad of health and safety violations found at the Hillcrest Women’s Medical Center in June.

The failures included:
  • Outdated medication and supplies
  • Lack of documentation that a consultant physician had proper credentials for advising staff to ensure satisfactory treatment of patients
  • Medication stored in refrigerators with inappropriate temperatures
  • Failure to provide a sanitary environment. Deficiencies included ceiling tiles stained with an unidentified brown substance, torn padding on exam tables, and a front yard with grass measuring two to three feet high.

Pro-Abortion Catholic Tim Kaine Cites Bible With Plea to Respect “Different Perspectives”

It is only to state the obvious that a writer will gear his argument, his rhetoric, and the volume with which he makes his pitch depending on the audience he is trying to sway.

So when pro-abortion Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who is running for re-election in 2018, writes an essay for Christianity Today the vitriol with which he and his party lambast Republicans and particularly President Trump is conspicuous by its absence. Indeed, when talking about the future of the fight over Obamacare, Kaine writes about “find[ing] these solutions by bringing together different perspectives”– how “No one person or party has all the answers, so we cannot say to the other side ‘I don’t need you.’”

To reinforce this point, Kaine benevolently adds, “Our disagreements do not lie in whether to care for them, but how.”

Going for broke, Kaine calls in the heavy artillery. He quotes the Apostle Paul’s explanation/admonition to a quarreling church in Corinth where Paul “compared a church with many members to a body with many parts.” None is more important than any other.

Is this the same we-are-all-in-this-together fellow who recently told POLITICO

Trump “has frequently done things that I think are shocking for a president to do, but nothing he’s done has been surprising,” Kaine says. “There is nothing this guy has done that should surprise a person in this country based on the person he was before he took the oath of office.”

Of course, pro-lifers know Kaine as the have-it-both-ways “personally opposed” Democrat who signed on as Hillary Clinton’s vice president and pledged his unfailing support for her full abortion-on-demand agenda. That included her fervent desire to obliterate the Hyde Amendment, credited with saving two million lives, which Kaine had said he supported.

So is this the same Tim Kaine (with a 100% pro-abortion voting record) who starts his Christianity Today essay by quoting from Matthew 25 where Jesus talks of the time when the Son of Man will judge the nations? Where the sheep will be separated from the goats based on their response to Jesus–that is to say, how they/we treat “the least of these”?

Of course, Kaine knows the hypocrisy. He has chosen political expediency over what his faith and his reason both tell him: who is more “the least of these” than the unborn child? . . .

Abortion clinics in 375 cities are about to be targeted with 40 days of continuous prayer

One of the world’s most successful ongoing pro-life campaigns to shut down abortion clinics is starting up in nine days.

40 Days for Life begins its next global campaign of prayer, fasting, and around-the-clock vigil at abortion clinics September 27th, and finishes on November 5th. During this time, thousands of pro-lifers will visit abortion clinics for a time of concentrated, peaceful prayer.

Campaign organizers say this year’s event is expected to be the largest gathering of pro-life intercessors since the vigil began in 2004.

“We are very excited about the largest 40 Days for Life campaign ever,” 40 Days for Life President Shawn Carney told LifeSiteNews. Carney said the campaign will be in 375 cities around the world. . . .

Prolifers can check the 40 Days for Life website for the location of a vigil in their area. The website may also be used by those wanting to apply to lead a 40 Days for Life vigil in their community.

A special “kick off” is planned for Sunday, September 24, in Philadelphia. Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life and many other pro-life leaders will take part at the event beginning at 3:30 PM in Sister Cities Park, 18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. She Chose Adoption Instead of Abortion, After Praying for 20 Years She Reunited With Her Son

Evie Lastra West spent her teen years living a rough life as a gang member and drug addict.

She went through two teenage pregnancies and almost aborted her second child. But while making an adoption plan for her son, West completely changed her life around.

Now, she is a pro-life advocate who speaks across the country about her difficult past. Later this month, West will be the keynote speaker at the Options Pregnancy Center banquet in Alpena, Michigan, according to The Alpena News.

As a young teenager, West joined a gang in her home town of Orange County, California. The Daily Advance reports she spent a lot of her time partying with the gang and getting high on drugs.

When she was 16, she became pregnant and gave birth to her oldest son. She said she basically left her son to her parents’ care.

“For the first two years of my son’s life I wasn’t around,” West said. “I was literally sucking the life out of my parents.”

Eventually, she said her parents packed up her bags and told her that she had to leave. They enrolled her in a Christian college in Cleveland, Tennessee called Lee University; and, knowing no other option, West went.

She said her son, who was 2 years old at the time, went with her.

“My son became the campus baby,” West said. “He got lots of attention, everybody wanted to play with him, and I liked that. Things were starting to go well for me.” . . . Read More

Dedicated Pro-Life Man Goes on Hunger Strike to Protest Killing Babies in Abortions

As the pressures to legalize abortion increase in Ireland, one man launched a hunger strike Monday to stand up for unborn babies’ right to life.

Ireland Breaking News reports Tim Jackson, of Donegal, Ireland, stood outside the Dáil (lower house of the Irish Parliament) with a white flag and a sign with an image of an unborn baby that read “Stop the killing.”

Jackson said he wants lawmakers to watch a video showing how an unborn baby is aborted before they consider changing Ireland’s laws. He said he will drink only water and will continue the strike “as long as necessary.”

The Eighth Amendment in Ireland gives unborn babies a right to life. The country also has one of the lowest maternal mortality rates and best health care for women in the world. However, abortion activists and some of the world’s richest men have been pushing the pro-life country to repeal the Eighth Amendment and legalize abortion on demand.

A special government committee was established this year to consider if abortion should be legal in certain or any circumstances. However, over the summer, Irish health minister Simon Harris started drafting legislation to legalize abortion before the committee even issued its report. . . . Read More

Donald Trump Jr. Blasts Late-Term Abortion: ‘disgusting And Sub Human’

Donald Trump Jr. called abortion workers laughing about late-term abortion “disgusting and sub human” in a tweet on September 12.

Trump Jr. linked to a tweet from the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) that contained a petition to defund Planned Parenthood.

The ACLJ quoted a late-term abortion worker as saying, “they come out crying and looking for their mama.”

“I don’t care what side of the [aisle] you sit on regarding the issue,” Trump Jr. tweeted. “If true, we should all agree that this is disgusting and sub human.”

I don't care what side of the isle you sit on regarding the issue, if true, we should all agree that this is disgusting and sub human.
During a dilation and evacuation abortion, “an abortionist first dilates the woman’s cervix and then uses instruments to dismember and extract the baby from the uterus,” explains.

After removing amniotic fluid, “the abortionist uses a sopher clamp — a grasping instrument with rows of sharp ‘teeth’ — to grasp and pull the baby’s arms and legs, tearing the limbs from the child’s body. ... The most difficult part of the procedure is usually finding, grasping and crushing the baby’s head.”

After removing pieces of the child’s skull, the abortionist uses a curette to scrape the uterus and remove the placenta and any remaining parts of the baby. . . . rEAD mORE

Pro-Lifers Arrested Nationwide for Giving Women Alternatives Inside Abortion Clinics and Refusing to Leave

In three different cities across the United States, pro-lifers simultaneously entered abortion centers to talk to women scheduled for abortions. In each instance they refused to leave the clinics when told to do so by law enforcement and offered an act of non-violent defense of unborn children about to be aborted.

Once inside the clinics, small teams of pro-lifers peacefully approached mothers seated in the waiting rooms and offered them red roses as a symbol of life. Attached to each rose was a card which on one side read,”You were made to love and to be loved … Your goodness is greater than the difficulties of your situation. Circumstances in life change. A new life, however tiny, brings the promise of unrepeatable joy.” The card also contained phone numbers of local pregnancy help centers.

These rescues did not involve the blockading of abortion center entrances or procedure rooms. When police officers arrived on the scene, pro-lifers attempted to continue conversation with women or sat on the floor praying quietly or singing hymns until they were placed under arrest, organizers said.

“Those involved in the “Red Rose Rescue” talked to women scheduled for abortions, extending to them words of encouragement and offering material help. In addition to reaching out to the mothers, the rescuers chose to remain in the clinic as an act of solidarity with the unborn children scheduled to be killed by abortionists. The rescuers, like any others who recognize an urgent situation, responded to dire circumstances of imminent peril in a spirit of intervention on behalf of innocent babies and beleaguered mothers,” organizers informed LifeNews.

The pro-life advocates were arrested at the following abortion clinics:

Northland Family Planning, 3810 17 Mile Rd., Sterling Heights, MI
Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic, 101 S Whiting St. #215, Alexandria, Virginia
University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health, E, 2301 Yale Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM.

. . . Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that her work was “to go into the dark holes of the poor.” The Red Rose Rescue is an action of going into the dark holes of the poor–namely abortion centers–where the innocent are rejected–and in these dark holes we seek to bring hope, true peace and the presence of God.” . . . Planned Parenthood Wants to Remove a “Racist” Statute. But What About Its Racist Founder?

Planned Parenthood just loves to shout about the evils of racism. Perhaps, it’s because the abortion chain’s leaders think they will be able to cover up their own racist roots if they shout loud and long enough.

Recently, the abortion chain’s New York City branch joined a protest calling for the removal of a statue in Central Park that honors Dr. J. Marion Sims, according to the Gotham Gazette.

Sims is considered the “father of modern gynecology,” but many believe he also was a racist who performed surgical experiments on enslaved black women without anesthesia.

“PPNYC strongly condemns the statue of Dr. Sims because it sanctions racism, hate and abuse of black women. We stand with the many groups calling for its immediate removal,” wrote Christina Chang, vice president of public affairs at Planned Parenthood of New York City.

In her op-ed, Chang claimed her abortion chain wants the statue removed because it represents violence and hatred against a targeted group of people. . . .

Yet, her abortion business has vehemently refused to end the violence it commits daily against another group of human beings — unborn babies. And it has never even hinted about changing the name of its major New York City abortion facility, the Margaret Sanger Health Center, or disavowed Sanger’s racism.

Many believe Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a racist who wanted to target the black community with birth control and sterilization. She openly promoted eugenics through her writing and speeches, and once spoke at a KKK rally.

Prominent black leaders, including the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., have called for the removal of a statue of Sanger at the Smithsonian because of her racist agenda. They said Sanger supported eugenics to rid the nation of people she deemed “defective” and “feeble-minded” by stopping the growth of their populations, particularly blacks and other minorities.

They pointed to Sanger’s book “Pivot of Civilization,” in which she describes racial minorities and immigrants as “human weeds,” “reckless breeders” and “spawning… human beings who never should have been born.”

Then, in her book “Woman and the New Race” Sanger argued that people should not have large families because they perpetuate poverty and illness. She said it is better for everyone involved if a child’s life is snuffed out before he or she has a chance to cause problems for their family.

Sanger wrote, “[We should] apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.”

The Smithsonian refused to grant the black leaders’ request.

Sanger’s abortion chain still targets minority women and their babies for abortions. Today, black women have a disproportionately high number of abortions in the United States. Research by Protecting Black Life found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood surgical abortion facilities are located within walking distance of African American and Latino neighborhoods. . . . Teen Abortion in Arkansas Hit New Low in 2016

by Jerry Cox: Earlier this summer the Arkansas Department of Health released its annual report regarding abortion.

The report shows, among other things, that abortion has fallen to its lowest levels since 1977 and that fewer women are coming to Arkansas from other states to have abortions.

It also shows that abortion among teenagers has fallen to new lows.

In 1994 some 6,036 abortions were performed in Arkansas. Of those, 1,503 were on teenagers — nearly one in every four abortions.

In 2016 only 349 abortions were on teenagers — less than 11% of all the abortions performed in Arkansas that year.

Some say this decline is due to increased access to birth control among teenagers. However, Arkansas’ teen pregnancy rates have remained high. While that’s nothing to brag about, it shows contraceptives are not the reason teenagers are having fewer abortions.

What’s behind the drastic decline in abortion? For one thing, we are building a culture of life. Abortion is unthinkable to many young people who have seen ultrasound images and know what abortion really is.

I also believe much of the credit goes to our pro-life laws passed in recent years. In 2015 Arkansas passed one of the best informed-consent laws in the nation. It ensures women are given all the facts about abortion up front. Nearly 500 women chose not to have abortions last year after being given that information.

Below is a breakdown of abortion among teenagers and adults in Arkansas since 1994.
