Meet Evie: She Saves Babies From Abortion Outside Clinics as a Sidewalk Counselor

People who aren’t involved in the pro-life movement—and even some within it—tend to believe that those who stand outside abortion clinics are there to shame and terrify vulnerable abortion-minded women.

. . . quite the opposite: the people who wait outside of abortion clinics (referred to within our movement as “sidewalk counselors”) are selfless, compassionate people trying to help the women who go to clinics because they feel they don’t have a choice.

We already know that most women seek abortion due to economic and social pressure. Both study after study as well as countless personal stories confirm that many women choose abortion because they believe they don’t have the resources to care for a child. Sidewalk counselors work to connect these women to the resources they need. This work transforms—and literally saves—lives.

As a secularist, Monica Snyder does not share the beliefs of Evie Schwartzbauer, the sidewalk counselor interviewed here. But she can’t help but be impressed and humbled by the way Evie’s faith clearly inspires, uplifts, and sustains her as she does this physically and emotionally draining work. It’s my impression there are relatively few secular sidewalk counselors. Suspect this is partially because most sidewalk counseling organizations are heavily religious, so it may seem like an awkward fit for an atheist or agnostic. But I also wonder what, in the absence of faith, the secular sidewalk counselor would draw on to do this kind of immediate and intimate work for an extended period of time.

Questions asked by Monica Snyder and answered by Evie Schwartzbauer:

1. How did you get started sidewalk counseling? What draws you to the sidewalk compared to other types of pro-life work?

2. What does your work entail? Describe an average day of sidewalk counseling.

3. What are the most difficult aspects of this work, and how do you handle those?

4. Do you hand out literature? If so, what is it about?

5. Do you have religious beliefs? If so, how do those influence your work? How do you handle religious differences between you and the people you meet?

6. How do you respond to people who say they are at the clinic for reasons other than abortion?

7. What are some of the most common circumstances women describe that brought them to the clinic?

8. Do you have ongoing relationships with any of the women you have met at the sidewalk? If so, what are those like?

9. Do you interact with clinic staff? If so, what has that been like?

10. Many people believe that sidewalk counselors primarily try to shame and intimidate women. How do you respond to that idea?

11. What do you think of buffer zone laws? Has your work been impacted by such laws?

12. What advice would you give someone interested in sidewalk counseling?

13. What advice do you have for people who don’t sidewalk counsel but still want to help women with crisis pregnancies?

14. What do you believe the pro-life movement is getting right? What do you believe could be better?  . . . Read the answers and more

Mississippi Bill Would Create the Earliest State Abortion Ban, Protecting Babies After 15 Weeks

Mississippi House committee members approved a bill Tuesday to protect unborn babies and moms from abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

State House Bill 1510 would create the earliest ban on abortion in any state in the U.S. by pushing back Mississippi’s current limit by 5 weeks, according to the AP. The bill now moves to the full state House, where Republicans are the majority. The bill would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks except when there are risks to the life or physical health of the mother, or fatal fetal anomalies.

State Rep. Andy Gipson, chairman of the state House Judiciary B Committee, said they want to protect women’s health by prohibiting later-term abortions, which are riskier to women, the report states.

“The risk to the mother is the prime driver in this bill,” the Republican lawmaker said. “I think the Supreme Court has recognized that the states have an interest in protecting human life.”

Mississippi currently is one of more than a dozen states that prohibits abortions after 20 weeks. Owners of Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the only abortion clinic in the state, said they do abortions up to 18 weeks . . . Read More

President Trump Slams Democrats for Blocking Senate Bill Banning Late-Term Abortions After 20 Weeks

President Donald Trump today is slamming Senate Democrats for blocking a pro-life Senate bill to ban late-term abortions — a bill that would save as many as 18,000 unborn babies form abortions each and every year.

The Senate voted Monday on whether to stop the Democrats’ filibuster of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks — as neither Congress nor state legislatures can vote to ban all abortions under Roe v. Wade. The bill highlights how unborn babies feel intense pain when they are killed in abortions.

Fifty-one senators (forty-eight Republicans and three Democrats) voted to take the bill up for debate, but 60 votes were required. (See vote tally at end of article). All but three Democrats voted to support legalized and unlimited abortions until birth.

Today, President Trump criticized those recalcitrant senators who stood in the way of stopping late-term abortions.

“Recently, when I addressed the 45th annual March for Life, I called on the Senate to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, important legislation that would protect our most vulnerable. It is disappointing that despite support from a bipartisan majority of U.S. Senators, this bill was blocked from further consideration,” he said.

Trump highlighted the scientific evidence showing unborn babies feel pain in late abortions.

“Scientific studies have demonstrated that babies in the womb feel pain at twenty weeks. The vote by the Senate rejects scientific fact and puts the United States out of the mainstream in the family of nations, in which only 7 out of 198 nations, including China and North Korea, allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy,” he said.

Trump concluded, “We must defend those who cannot defend themselves. I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect life.” . . . Read More

Two Republicans Who Voted to Keep Late-Term Abortions Legal

While Sen. Orrin Hatch expressed his ‘shock’ Monday that most of his Democratic colleagues could vote against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, it wasn’t just Democrats who opposed the measure.

Two Republican senators joined Democrats in voting against the 20-week abortion ban: Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.

Meanwhile, Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania—all Democrats—voted in favor of the ban on abortions at the point which unborn babies can feel pain, with certain exceptions such as rape, incest and to save the mother’s life.

With a vote of 51-46 in favor of the ban, it failed to reach the 60 votes required to advance to a final vote.

Murkowski said in a statement that she opposes late-term abortions but said the bill didn’t contain “sufficient protections for women and imposes unreasonable and unrealistic requirements in certain instances.” . . .Read More

Governor Greg Abbott Pledges to Keep Texas Pro-Life

Texas has been and will continue to be a leading defender of unborn babies in America, Gov. Greg Abbott told a large crowd Saturday in Austin.

Abbott spoke to the Texas Rally for Life, which drew thousands of people to the state capitol to mark the anniversary of the infamous U.S. Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“It’s been 45 years since Roe v. Wade, and since then, Texas has become the national leader in defending life,” Abbott said. “As governor, I will fight for every child to have a chance at life.”

The pro-life governor shared a personal story about choosing life for his daughter, Audrey, 21 years ago. Abbott said his daughter recently made the dean’s list at her college, according to the report.

Abbott and his administration have been dedicated to defending unborn babies. They currently are fighting a series of legal challenges by the abortion industry.

In 2017, the state legislature passed a ban on brutal dismemberment abortions that tear unborn babies limb from limb while their hearts are beating. While abortion activists are challenging the protective law, Abbott’s administration is expected to defend it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.

This year, Texas lawmakers also strengthened a ban on the sale of aborted babies’ body parts by requiring that abortion facilities bury or cremate the babies’ remains. They cut off additional funding streams to the abortion giant Planned Parenthood as well. . . . Read More

Study: Almost 75% of American Women Who Had Abortions Were Pressured

A significant number of American women who have had an abortion have felt subtle, or even substantial, unwanted pressure to abort, a recent study has found.

The study, published recently in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, found that nearly three-quarters (73.8%) of women with a history of abortion surveyed admitted that they experienced at least subtle forms of pressure to terminate their pregnancies.

More than half of the women reported that the perceived pressure was great enough to significantly influence their decision to abort. Of the 987 women surveyed, more than half (58.3%) indicated that they decided to abort in order to make others happy. Nearly 30% of survey respondents admitted that they were afraid that they would lose their partner if they failed to terminate their pregnancy.

Further underlining the fact that choosing abortion is contrary women’s natural instincts, the study also found that two-thirds of the women (66%) knew in their hearts that abortion was wrong. Many women (67.5%) said that the decision to terminate their pregnancies was one of the hardest decisions of their lives.

“These findings are alarming,” . . . Read More

Cecile Richards Confirms She’s Resigning as CEO of Planned Parenthood Abortion Business

Cecile Richards Resigning
In a new email today to donors of the Planned Parenthood abortion business, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards confirms that she is indeed resigning.

News reports surfaced earlier this week from anonymous sources indicating that Richards would be stepping down as a leader of the nation’s biggest abortion company. Under her administration, Planned Parenthood killed as many as 3.8 million unborn children in abortions.

Since the announcement, speculation has run rampant as to why Richards is stepping down. . . . [Who Cares!!!]

Richards’ email today includes a video with her remarks thanking Planned Parenthood supporters for their dedication during her 12 years leading the abortion company. . . . [Again Who Cares!!!]

40 Days for Life president Shawn Carney reacted to the news that Richards is resigning by saying its not a surprise since Planned Parenthood has been facing so many self-created problems,

“Planned Parenthood has had a string of bad CEOs, and they’ve all been unable to keep the billion-dollar operation out of scandal and investigations,” he told LifeNews.

“Planned Parenthood’s image and brand are at an all-time low. Despite receiving more than $500 million of tax funding annually, Planned Parenthood has closed 32% of its facilities since Cecile Richards took over,” Carney said.

“Since Richards has been in charge at Planned Parenthood, 40 Days for Life has grown from one city to 741 – a reflection that the tide has turned on abortion at the local level,” he said.

He said Planned Parenthood’s most recent annual report noted a slight decrease in its own abortion numbers, and in 2017 alone, Planned Parenthood shuttered 32 offices from coast to coast.

“There is a huge disconnect between Cecile Richards and the staff that run Planned Parenthood abortion facilities. We know of 170 workers who have had a change of heart and left the abortion industry during 40 Days for Life campaigns,” said Carney. “Planned Parenthood has lost so much credibility and momentum at the local level.”

Former Planned Parenthood workers report that the “no show” rate for abortion appointments can go as high as 75% when people are outside praying in front of the abortion location.

“Since 40 Days for Life was launched nationally in 2007, we are aware of some 43 Planned Parenthood offices – both abortion facilities and referral centers – that have closed following peaceful 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside their doors.”  . . . Read More

Planned Parenthood Gives Out 10 Media Awards for ‘Unbiased’ ‘Activism’

On Monday, America’s largest abortion provider handed out “Media Excellence Awards” to 10 journalists and outlets that promote or defend its agenda. Planned Parenthood admitted on Twitter that it chose the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the U.S., on purpose to celebrate . . ."

This year’s winners, Planned Parenthood added, particularly focused on issues like “abortion stigma, the challenges faced by young immigrant women needing an abortion, access to health care for people who are transgender, and women’s reproductive rights in the US and abroad.” . . .

The ties between the media and the abortion industry go deep. For proof, look no further than the 280 awards Planned Parenthood has bestowed upon the media – including 10 this year.

On Monday, America’s largest abortion provider handed out “Media Excellence Awards” to 10 journalists and outlets that promote or defend its agenda. Planned Parenthood admitted on Twitter that it chose the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the U.S., on purpose to celebrate “journalists, outlets & activists who are committed to advancing the cause of reproductive health, rights & freedom.”

“Amidst ongoing attacks, writers and publications continue to produce fact-based, professional, and unbiased journalism,” Planned Parenthood continued. “Thank you to those who bring understanding, compassion, and honesty to the conversation around reproductive health issues.”

So these [Pro Abortion] award winners are “advancing the cause” with “unbiased journalism?” That’s Orwellian. Calling abortion “reproductive health” is like calling black white.

This year’s winners, Planned Parenthood added, particularly focused on issues like “abortion stigma, the challenges faced by young immigrant women needing an abortion, access to health care for people who are transgender, and women’s reproductive rights in the US and abroad.” . . .

1. Tarana Burke, #MeToo founder and Girls for Gender Equity senior director.

2. Feminist site Bustle (and managing editor Amanda Chan) for its “exceptional coverage of reproductive and sexual health and your accurate, compelling, and non-stigmatizing coverage of reproductive and sexual health issues.”

3. Romper editor Danielle Campoamor for her “heart-wrenching & thought provoking piece, ‘I’m Miscarrying Right Now, & It’s Only Strengthening My Beliefs About Abortion.’”

4. (and editor Christina Coleman) for its “powerful coverage of reproductive & sexual health, including ‘A Matter Of Life & Death: Why Are Black Women In The U.S. More Likely To Die During Or After.’”

5. National Geographic Explorer correspondent Francesca Fiorentini‏ for her piece “Jailed for a Miscarriage” that showed the “plight of women who have had miscarriages in El Salvador & its oppressive abortion laws.”

6. Journalist Brad Kutner, for his “piece that appeared on [], highlighting the non-judgemental care that transgender & gender non-conforming patients receive at the PP health center in Richmond.”

7. Feminist site Refinery29 (and senior editor Rebecca Adams) for its “insightful and compelling coverage on issues like the continued attacks on reproductive rights, sexual assault and consent, and restrictive state abortion laws.”

8. Rewire immigration reporter Tina Vasquez for her “exemplary & comprehensive coverage of the Jane Doe case that illustrated the intersection of immigration & reproductive rights.”

9. Vogue magazine for “their exceptional coverage, including an [Annie Leibovitz] spread of our patients, staff, activists & [Cecile Richards] at our Queens health center.”

10. New York culture site The Village Voice and writer Lauren Evans for her “piece that explored how misconceptions & misinformation about abortion spread by crisis pregnancy centers are used to deter women from making their own reproductive health choices.”  . . . Read More

Actor Kevin Sorbo: Abortion is the ‘definition of evil’

Actor Kevin Sorbo
Hollywood is mostly an industry that favors abortion. Celebrities flock to fundraisers for abortion corporations like Planned Parenthood and NARAL; writers, actors, and producers are increasingly trying to shoehorn abortion into the mainstream culture.

But while they may not always be as vocal, there are pro-life celebrities out there. And one of them, actor Kevin Sorbo, just wrote an op-ed in defense of life — and he didn’t mince his words.

Sorbo, who is best known for playing the title role in the TV fantasy-adventure series “Hercules,” wrote about the experience a friend had when his ex-girlfriend realized she was unexpectedly pregnant. His friend, whom he called Mike, received a call from the ex-girlfriend, whom Sorbo called Kate. Kate wanted Mike to come with her to an abortion facility. After her birth control had failed, she thought abortion was her only choice.

“[S]he did the only logical, sensible thing that our culture forces down our throats – she scheduled an abortion,” Sorbo wrote. “But as the day approached, she was filled with trepidation. Contrary to common knowledge, abortions are surgery, and deadly serious. Kate knew enough to be daunted by the prospect, so she reached out to a friend she trusted not to ‘judge’ her harshly.”

So Kate asked Mike to come with her and hold her hand. But Mike instead asked if they could talk about her decision.

“Mike continued, quietly and with conviction, ‘This child inside your womb is the greatest love story of your life, Kate. Killing it will not solve your problem; it will create an even bigger one’,” Sorbo recounted. “‘I understand you feel a great burden. Bringing a life into the world can be just that, but in removing that life from your body, you will be destroying an opportunity to know love like you have never imagined. So, I beg you not to do this thing. Change your point of view, instead, and see this as the greatest of love stories, one that will be yours for the rest of your life.’”

Kate cried and told him she would think about it; ultimately, she chose life for her baby, who is now an adult, married and with children of his own. The problem, Sorbo argued, is that we have all been sold a lie.

“Secular humanists have made the word abortion sound like a woman’s right, synonymous with health care, female empowerment, standing for women’s issues, a choice, a solution; anything but the truth,” he said. “The truth is, however, abortion is the termination of life. It is just a euphemism for murder because the only reason to get an abortion is to avoid the potential of birth – a human birth.”

Sorbo pointed out that disturbing a sea turtle’s nest or stealing its eggs is a crime that can land someone in prison for years. But abortion is not only legal, it’s been turned into a profitable industry. . . . Read More

Senate Defeats Democrat Filibuster of Pro-Life HHS Secretary Nominee Alex Azar

A former clerk for pro-life Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will likely become the next HHS Secretary as Senate Republicans successfully tuned back a Democrat filibuster to move forward to a vote to approve Alex Azar today. Azar is President Donald Trump’s latest pro-life nominee to a key administrative position with influence over abortion policy.

Azar, a former top executive at Eli Lilly and Company, will become the new Health and Human Services secretary and replace Tom Price, the pro-life former congressman who left his post in September.

Azar is someone the pro-life movement would appreciate. He previously served under former President George W. Bush as deputy secretary for the health and human services department so he is significantly familiar with the agency and pro-life issues that are important there.

As the head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Azar would oversee key pro-life issues such as conscience protections for pro-life medical professionals, the handling of taxpayer funding for abstinence education, and overseeing the Obamacare program that includes taxpayer financing of abortions.
The Hill has more on today’s vote:

The Senate on Tuesday advanced the nomination of Alex Azar to be Secretary of Health and Human Services over a key hurdle by a 54 to 43 vote.

Most Democrats voted against advancing Azar, but seven Democrats joined Republicans to move his nomination forward. A vote on final confirmation is expected to soon follow.

Two former HHS Secretaries under Bush, Tommy Thompson and Mike Leavitt, wrote in The Hill this month that Azar has “the track record from his previous time at HHS to be a successful manager.”
During his confirmation hearing in the United States Senate, Azar said that decisions the agency makes need to take into consideration conscience issues for Christians who don’t want to be forced to fund abortions.

Azar’s comments are especially helpful for organizations like Little Sisters of the Poor and Christian-run businesses like Hobby Lobby that don’t want to be forced by the federal government to pay for abortions or abortion-causing drugs in their employee health insurance plans. The Obama Administration forced them and hundreds of Christian businesses and organizations to fund abortions despite their deeply-held religious views.

Azar’s nomination is seen as a bright light to continue the pro-life policies President Donald Trump has put into place to overturn the mandates the Obama Administration put forward that forced Christians to fund abortion drugs. . . . . . . Read More @ LifeNews

Trump declares Roe v. Wade abortion anniversary to be ‘Sanctity of Human Life Day’

President Donald Trump proclaimed Monday, January 22, 2018, "National Sanctity of Human Life Day." The proclamation comes on the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. throughout the entire nine months of a mother’s pregnancy.

Trump made the proclamation on Friday, as hundreds of thousands of pro-life pilgrims converged upon Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life.

“Today, we focus our attention on the love and protection each person, born and unborn, deserves regardless of disability, gender, appearance, or ethnicity,” begins Trump’s proclamation.

“Reverence for every human life, one of the values for which our Founding Fathers fought, defines the character of our Nation,” Trump continued in the proclamation. “Today, it moves us to promote the health of pregnant mothers and their unborn children.”

The president remarked how holding human life as sacred involves standing up for the “the weak and the powerless,” and “dispels the notion that our worth depends on the extent to which we are planned for or wanted.”

Trump emphasized that science is on the side of life in the proclamation, mentioning it twice.. . . Read more at LifeSite News

From DC to You

by Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life : Thanks to all of you who marched during Friday's March for Life in Washington, DC. It was an awesome event!

President Trump became the first president to address the March for Life via video screens ... but you may not have heard much about it in the secular media.

So here's a link to an article and videoz. from the Gray Washington News Bureau that shows the true flavor of the event.

Now it’s time to get to work where we live as we get ready for the largest spring 40 Days for Life campaign ever!

We'll be at more California events next weekend, so watch your email for details!

The annual events that commemorate the Roe v. Wade anniversary are always a great encouragement to get out and do even more on behalf of those who cannot speak up for themselves.

And you'll have the opportunity to do just that from February 14 to March 25 as part of the next 40 Days for Life campaign!

by Kerby Anderson: Today is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. When the Supreme Court removed most state restrictions on abortion back in 1973, who could have predicted the world we live in today?

When the ruling came down, few understood the long-term implications. I remember speaking on the issue in college classrooms a few years later and wondering when the Supreme Court would reverse its decision. By the 1980s, it seemed like only a matter of time that abortion would once again be restricted in America. That did not happen.

A whole generation of young people has grown up never having known a time when abortions were illegal. They may have seen some protests and may have heard some debate about the subject. But that is perhaps the sum total of their experience.

Abortion has left a scar on the soul of this nation, just like the scar slavery left on America’s soul in previous centuries. Unfortunately, many Americans cannot see the scar that abortion has left on this country.

I see the evidence of these scars when I take phone calls from women who were exploited by abortion. I see evidence of these scars when I hear the cavalier comments of young people about human life. I see these scars when I hear people debate related issues like stem cell research and physician-assisted suicide.

But I also see the healing when I see the good work of pregnancy resource centers. I understand from people working in this area that there are three times as many pregnancy resource centers in this country as there are abortion clinics. In many ways, the pro-life movement is winning the war of ideas.

And I am encouraged that so many young people (our future leaders) are pro-life and understand the importance of being pro-life. So, there are some encouraging signs even as we see the scars left by abortion.

Had Enough of 45 Years of Abortion?

. . . Here’s One Pro-Life Step to Take to Stop Abortion

by Carol Tobias, President of the National Right to Life Committee: Pro Life The pro-life movement today has much to be proud of. Fourteen months ago, we elected a staunchly pro-life President who has already made purposeful use of his executive power, in every way he legally could, to protect life and to reverse the funding and promotion of abortion.

In that same election, we were successful in electing pro-life members of Congress and keeping pro-life leadership in both the House and Senate. Our state affiliates have been extremely successful in electing pro-life men and women to their state legislatures and to statewide offices.

Winning more elections means we are able to pass more pro-life laws. NRLC works with members of Congress on a federal level, and with state legislatures through our state affiliates. When someone talks about “grassroots organizations,” NRLC and its 50 state affiliates are a classic example.

We have been extremely effective in passing legislation to require that parents be informed that their minor daughter is seeking an abortion, and to require that abortion-minded women be told about the possible risks and complications of abortion, as well as alternatives that are available.

Some states have been successful in adding requirements that the women be told about “abortion pill reversal” in the case of a chemical abortion. Many have passed legislation making it possible, before she makes this life or death decision, for a woman to have an ultrasound and see her baby.

We are currently working on legislation, at both the state and federal level, to protect from abortion unborn babies who have developed to the point where they can feel pain. We are also diligently trying to stop the killing of unborn children by dismemberment abortion. Whatever opinion people might have on the general topic of “abortion,” surely most would agree that no living human should have their arms and legs torn off and bleed to death.

We are working with Congress to pass a federal bill that would require abortionists, and anyone in the room with him/her, to treat a baby who survives an abortion just as any person would try to help a baby born early in a “wanted” pregnancy. Again, unless you are a dyed-in-the-wool pro-abortionist, how could you oppose this?

We’ve been able to write and re-write laws because we’ve won elections. We’ve won elections because of grass roots support for pro-life candidates and for NRLC’s PAC and Victory Fund.

Why, then, do we sometimes hear friends complain about the state of the pro-life movement? Understandably, there is frustration — which I share — that 45 years after Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, abortion has not come to an end in America.

Let me state categorically: Abortion will come to an end in America. History and morality are on our side. But we have a lot more hard work ahead of us. We will not get there until we add enough constitutionally honest justices to the US Supreme Court to overturn those sweeping and evil 1973 court cases. That will not happen until our President has the opportunity to appoint honorable justices, and unless we protect and add to the ranks of pro-life Senators needed to confirm them.

There is no magic bullet — even though I wish there were. Today’s Supreme Court will strike down every clever wording of this definition or that timetable that looks like a magic bullet. Until and unless we change the Supreme Court. There is no substitute for the hard work involved — and for the faith, perseverance, and unity needed in the pro-life movement in marching toward that day of change.

Until then, there is still much we can do — indeed, much we must do. We need to elect more pro-life candidates at all levels because the pro-life laws we have been enacting are already saving lives. And we can save more. Many of these laws have been so carefully crafted that they have survived court challenges. And they are an absolutely necessary part of us making progress toward the day abortion comes completely to an end.

If you are not already involved in these massive efforts to change the law and protect the unborn babies, your talents and efforts are needed.

As I recently told a reporter, we want to change hearts and minds so that, even if abortion remained legal, no one would want one. However, the more permanent way to stop abortion is to change the law. Those efforts continue with the next election.

President Trump Proclaims Religious Freedom Day

President Donald Trump proclaimed January 16th as Religious Freedom Day in the United States. Now every year the president will declare January 16th as Religious Freedom Day, a day set aside to celebrate religious faith in America.

The day is important for pro-life Americans because Christians are being forced around the country to promote or fund abortions. The administration of former president Barack Obama forced Christian businesses like Hobby Lobby and even Catholic nuns like Little Sisters of the Poor to pay for abortion-causing drugs in their health care plans.

In comments associated with the proclamation, President Trump made it clear that no American should be forced to choose between their religious faith and the law and specifically mentioned those Christians who have been forced to promote or pay for abortions.

“Faith is embedded in the history, spirit, and soul of our Nation. On Religious Freedom Day, we celebrate the many faiths that make up our country,” Trump said. “Our Constitution and laws guarantee Americans the right not just to believe as they see fit, but to freely exercise their religion.”

“No American — whether a nun, nurse, baker, or business owner — should be forced to choose between the tenants of faith or adherence to the law,” Trump said. “The free exercise of religion is a source of personal and national stability, and its preservation is essential to protecting human dignity. Religious diversity strengthens our communities and promotes tolerance, respect, understanding, and equality. Faith breathes life and hope into our world. We must diligently guard, preserve, and cherish this unalienable right.” . . . Read The Full Proclamation

In Two Weeks, Global Number of Babies Aborted Tops 1 Million

This display represents 100,000 babies killed by abortion,
which is a fraction of the number of unborn children killed
throughout the world in the first two weeks of 2018.
The Abortion numbers are horrific.

A digital counter is illustrating the horrifying scale of abortion around the world. Already, less than two weeks into 2018, over 1.2 million babies have been killed by abortion.

The Worldometers website has real-time counters showing dozens of different statistics, including births, deaths, and public expenditure. It also has one for abortion. On 11 January 2018, the number passed 1.2 million, meaning the one million mark would have been passed in the morning of Tuesday 9 January. The number increases every second or so, each one representing the death of an innocent unborn child.

The website uses data from the World Health Organisation, which estimates that there are 40-50 million abortions in the world every year, corresponding to approximately 125,000 abortions per day. These figures are disputed, as the WHO's recent worldwide report, produced in consultation with the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, has been accused of "wildly inflating" the number of illegal abortions taking place in developing countries.

Stark reminder

However, while the statistics may not be completely reliable (and bear in mind that although Guttmacher might exaggerate illegal abortions, it doesn't include those caused by abortifacient contraception), the counter serves as a stark reminder of the vast scale of the slaughter of the innocents happening across the world. . . . How Abortion Pills Upend the Politics and Practice of Abortion

by Rebecca Oas, Ph.D.: Since the dawn of the abortion movement, activists insisted that abortion should be solely the concern of a woman and her doctor. But as the method of abortion worldwide has shifted from surgery to medication, abortion advocates are increasingly regarding the doctor as unnecessary—and, in some cases, counterproductive.

“The classic framework of abortion rights advocacy, where safe equals legal and illegal means unsafe, is turned on its head by self-managed medical abortion,” according to representatives of a Dutch organization that provides abortion pills to women in countries where the practice is illegal. “Ironically, in legally restrictive settings medical abortion is currently more under women’s control than in settings where medical abortion is used within the official healthcare system,” they said.

The remarks appeared in a special issue of the journal Contraception focusing on medical abortion, with its political position exemplified by a lead editorial by Marge Berer, the head of a UK-based abortion advocacy group.

Countries long regarded as having progressive laws on abortion are increasingly drawing criticism by the same feminist groups that used to praise them. Decades of effort to house abortion firmly within national health care systems, as in the UK, have ensured that it is subject to the same bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles as any other procedure. One article surveyed women who sought illegal abortion drugs in Great Britain, despite the presence of legal services. The most commonly cited reasons for this were the delays that have become widespread within the overloaded health system.

In 2000, Berer published an editorial in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO), where she argued, “[m]aking abortion legal is an essential prerequisite to making it safe.” In 2017, her position had shifted from one of legalization to complete decriminalization, or the removal of any legal regulation whatsoever: “What makes abortion safe is simple and irrefutable—when it is available on the woman’s request and universally affordable and accessible.”

Affordability and access to abortion—regardless of the law—requires widespread availability of the drugs needed to perform it: misoprostol either alone or in combination with mifepristone. Both drugs were added to the WHO’s essential medicines list in 2005, but with the caveat “where permitted by national law and where culturally acceptable.” An article on abortion by misoprostol in the francophone African countries Benin and Burkina Faso noted that the drug had been added to their national essential medicines lists in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The authors credited this with its increased availability, while noting that the addition was “for other reproductive health indications, not induced abortion.”

Various authors in the special issue explored the prospect of first-trimester abortions becoming entirely medical rather than surgical. Some expressed concern that this trend could lead to even fewer providers being trained to perform surgical abortions—even as existing shortages of providers increase due to stigma and conscientious objection.

Just as medication abortion has changed the international discussion of “safety,” it has also challenged the concept of “providers,” by placing women themselves increasingly in the role of both patient and abortionist. In her summary editorial, Berer admits that medical abortion is “not problem free or perfect,” but blames women’s adverse experiences on anti-abortion laws and beliefs: “This is not the fault of the pills, though the pills are often blamed.”

What You Can Do to Fight Sex Trafficking #TACKLEDEMAND

by Dan Hart: January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. There are an estimated 20 to 30 million human trafficking victims in the world today, with an estimated 4.5 million of those forcibly involved in sex trafficking. In the U.S., an estimated 640,000 are being trafficked for sex.

These numbers are profoundly disturbing, and it can be tempting to feel discouraged that ordinary citizens like us are powerless to help these victims and to help stop the demand for paid sex. In reality, there are a number of ways that all of us can help in the fight. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation and Fight the New Drug have both published a list of practical ways we can all join the cause. Here is a brief summary of what you can do:

1. Do Not View or Pay for Porn
As we have written about previously, porn and sex trafficking are inseparably linked. Each click of pornography creates a demand for more pornography and brings in a profit to the industry. The demand causes traffickers, pimps, and those involved in the sex industry to abuse their victims by filming them in sex acts.

2. Learn How to Identify Potential Victims and Report Suspicious Activity
If you think you see suspicious activity happening wherever you are, be sure you have learned about what to look for. The Department of Homeland Security has published Indicators of Human Trafficking - be sure to look for these warning signs particularly in airports, gas stations, rest stops, and hotels. If you think you see something suspicious, call local law enforcement, or you can contact the 24-hour National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.

3. Use a New App to Take Pictures of Your Hotel Room
Hotel rooms are a hotspot for sex trafficking. Victims are often advertised online through pictures taken of them in hotel rooms. As Fight the New Drug has written on, there is a new app called TraffickCam that catalogues details of different hotel rooms like wallpaper and furniture to help create a database of identifiers, which can then be used by TraffickCam's algorithm to match images of sex trafficking victims that will help law enforcement identify the possible locations of victims.

4. Participate in Online Activism
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE) has organized a number of ways that you can participate in online activism. Here are two:

Joining NCSE's #TACKLEDEMAND social media campaign before the Super Bowl is a way to bring awareness about the problem of large commercial sporting events being used by sex traffickers and buyers for sexual exploitation. Netflix is producing a show called "Baby" that normalizes the sexual exploitation of young teenagers by portraying it as a kind of "edgy" coming of age story. You can protest this repulsive show by sending an email or Facebook message to Netflix executives demanding that they stop producing it.

Little Rock, Arkansas: 40th Annual March for Life

by Rose Mimms: The 40th Annual March for Life will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Little Rock at 2:00 p.m. The observance is a peaceful and prayerful event that attracts thousands of Arkansans from across the state including churches and families to remember the estimated 60 million unborn children who have been killed by legal abortion.

This event, sponsored by Arkansas Right to Life, will remember the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States on January 22, 1973.

Staging begins at 1:30 p.m. between Battery and Wolfe Streets on West Capitol Avenue behind the Arkansas State Capitol. At 2:00 p.m. President Andy Mayberry will lead the marchers along with elected officials, invited dignitaries and others special guests to the steps of the State Capitol for a brief program.

Arkansas AG Leslie Rutledge
The keynote speaker will be Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, who has distinguished herself as a champion for life in the defense of pro-life laws and policies faced by legal challenges. Among the laws that General Rutledge is currently defending is the 2017 law to ban the barbaric abortion procedure known as D&E, but more accurately described as dismemberment abortion. This type of abortion is commonly used in later pregnancy at 12 weeks or more on living unborn children.

Other participants in the program will be Bishop Anthony Taylor, Bishop of the Diocese of Little Rock and Dr. Ken Shaddox, Senior Pastor of Park Hill Baptist Church in North Little Rock. Arkansas Youth Chorale under the direction of Mr. Tommy Havens is scheduled to perform.

“Since we began marching 40 years ago, more and more people are joining us in our work to save the lives of the unborn through education and political action” said Rose Mimms, executive director. “This awareness has resulted in many pro-life laws passed and the steady decline in the number of abortions, but we will keep marching until respect for all human life is restored,” she said.

Arkansas Right to Life, the state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, is an affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, the leading voice of the voiceless dedicated to protecting all human beings threatened by abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.

Pro-lifers Furious New Mexico AG Won’t Investigate Baby Parts Sales

AG Hector Balderas (D-NM)
The New Mexico Attorney General won’t investigate his state’s flagship university and a late-term abortion facility for selling baby body parts, despite an ongoing FBI inquiry, the urging of a Congressional committee, and the suspension of a university researcher for her involvement in the “transfer” of body parts.

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, a Democrat, informed the U.S. House Select Investigative Panel on Infant lives he wasn’t interested in pursuing the case via a letter on January 4, 2018.

There is “insufficient evidence” to support the Congressional Panel’s findings that the University of New Mexico (UNM) and Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO) broke laws preventing trafficking of human body parts, Deputy Attorney General Tania Maestas wrote on behalf of Balderas’ office.

“We do not believe that the referrals’ allegations amount to probable cause for criminal violation of either act,” Maestas contended, referring to the two state laws that were allegedly violated.

Noting the referrals also alleged violations of federal law, Maestas wrote, “our office takes no position on any potential violations of federal law as alleged.” . . . Read More

House Will Vote on Pro-Life Bill Protecting Babies Born Alive After Botched Abortions

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Tuesday that the House will vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act next week, the week of the annual March for Life.

“Next week—the week of the annual March for Life when tens of thousands of Americans come to Washington to give voice to the voiceless unborn—the House will vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act,” Leader McCarthy said in a statement obtained by Townhall. “This bill states simply that if a baby is born after a failed abortion attempt, he or she should be given the same medical care as a baby born any other way. In line with our longstanding commitment to empower women, mothers will never be held criminally accountable. However, doctors who fail to provide medical care to newborns will be held criminally accountable. There is absolutely no ambiguity here. This is about protecting babies who are born and alive, and nobody should be against that.”

“Under Republican leadership, this House has consistently stood for life,” McCarthy added. “Last year, the House passed—among many other pro-life bills—the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which banned abortion at 20 weeks when science shows babies can feel pain. Unfortunately, almost all of our Democrat colleagues voted against that bill. Their votes were an attempt to ensure America remains one of only seven countries that allows radical late-term abortions.”

The bill would amend existing U.S. law to “prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion.”

Health care practitioners present when a child is born alive during an abortion procedure are required, at the risk of fines and imprisonment, to “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age” and “ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital.”

The bill was introduced on December 21st by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and is currently co-sponsored by 60 of her colleagues in the House. The legislation would strengthen enforcement of existing law, such as the 2002 Born Alive Infants Protection Act. The House passed a version of the bill in 2015 but it did not make progress in the Senate. . . . Read More

Will You Pray For an End to Abortion?

Most of us give up on our New Year’s resolutions rather quickly. But here’s one that I hope you’ll keep—for life.

If you’re a regular listener or reader of our BreakPoint commentaries, you know that we are staunchly pro-life. And likely you are, too. Every human life, in or out of the womb, is precious and invested with a special dignity, having been created in God’s image. But in our culture, life is assaulted.

Christians should, at the same time, both love unborn babies and their mothers, and also hate what abortion does to them—and to our broken society.

Many of our BreakPoint listeners and readers are active in the pro-life movement. Many of you have walked a picket line, written a letter to the editor, or volunteered at a pregnancy care center. Many of you have given money, sacrificially, to support pro-life organizations.

And yet, despite all this effort by you and millions like you and the great progress made by the pro-life community, the monstrous evil of legal abortion continues.

The statistics, 45 years after Roe v. Wade, are so well-known by now that, incredibly, they fail to shock us as they should. Around 60 million unborn American babies—think of it!—60 million, have succumbed to abortion since 1973. . . .

. . . Is anything impossible for God? Jesus Christ reigns over heaven and earth, He loves the little children, and He is perfectly willing and able to answer our prayers for them. And there are some things that we’re called to that will only, only be accomplished through prayer.

So let all of us who love life, born and unborn, commit to praying through this New Year, asking and expecting God to act. That’s something that all of us, no matter our political, financial, or social status, can do.

And so, once again, we’re asking you to join thousands of others in what has now become an annual effort here at BreakPoint and the Colson Center: the 21 Days of Prayer for Life.

Come to to download a free “21 Days of Prayer for Life” prayer guide, complete with moving stories, statistics, discussion questions, and of course, prayer requests for life. Even more, each day will equip you to not only pray but also to make the case for life with friends and neighbors. And it’s free. Use it in your family, your churches, your small groups.

There’s also a 21 Days of Prayer for Life app for your smart phone or computer. When you download the app, you’ll not only get the 21 days of pro-life devotionals and training, but you’ll receive pro-life prayer requests six days a week all 52 weeks this year. Can you imagine what would happen if thousands of Christians would pray for life and against abortion every day of 2018? . . . Read More

Law Would Force Christian Pregnancy Centers to Promote Abortions

Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys filed their opening brief Monday with the U.S. Supreme Court in a lawsuit challenging a California law that forces pro-life pregnancy care centers to provide free advertising for the abortion industry. ADF represents a pro-life pregnancy care center network, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, and two independent centers in the case, which in November the high court agreed to take up.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld a federal district judge’s decision to allow the law to remain in effect while the lawsuit, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra, proceeds. The brief asks the Supreme Court to reverse the ruling, halt the law, and affirm that forcing the centers to provide the free advertising contrary to their core mission is a violation of their constitutionally protected freedoms.

“No one should be forced to provide free advertising for the abortion industry. This is particularly true when the ones who are being forced to provide it are pro-life pregnancy care centers,” said ADF President, CEO, and General Counsel Michael Farris, who will argue the case before the high court. “Compelled speech strikes at the very heart of constitutionally protected liberties, which are most at risk when speakers are targeted by government officials who disagree with their thoughts and ideas. Targeting people who disagree with the government is exactly what the California law does.”

California’s Reproductive FACT Act, AB 775, requires licensed medical centers that offer free, pro-life help to pregnant women to post a disclosure saying that California provides free or low-cost abortion and contraception services. The disclosure must also include a phone number for a county office that refers women to Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion industry. The law also forces unlicensed pregnancy centers to add large disclosures in multiple languages about their non-medical status in all advertisements, which obscure and crowd out their pro-life speech. . . . ACLU Will Spend $25 Million This Year Pushing Pro-Abortion Candidates

The American Civil Liberties Union, often a partner with the abortion industry in lawsuits, plans to spend a huge amount to support pro-abortion candidates in the 2018 midterm elections.

Politico reports the liberal non-profit has at least $25 million slated to promote abortion and other liberal issues in the upcoming elections. The ACLU does not have a political action committee, so it cannot directly support or endorse candidates; it can, however, support issues, according to the Christian Post.

The pro-abortion legal group said it will release an election scorecard with candidates’ positions, statements and votes on various issues. It also plans to run advertisements, town hall meetings and phone banks leading up to the midterm elections, according to the report.

ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero told Politico that they hope to further engage voters in the increasingly divisive political climate. . . . Read More

PBS Program Investigates “Black Genocide,” How Abortion Targets African-Americans

A new investigation by PBS’s “Frontline” highlighted the genocide of abortion in the black community and the work that pro-lifers are doing to protect unborn black lives.

Though PBS typically is biased toward abortion, the Rev. Clenard H. Childress said he was pleasantly surprised that the report was fair and balanced, the Jacksonville Free Press reports.

Childress, who was featured extensively in the report, is the assistant national director of LEARN, the largest African-American evangelical pro-life organization in the United States.

The program “Anti-abortion Crusaders: Inside the African-American Abortion Battle” aired in December. It centered around the key message of black pro-life advocates: “The most dangerous place for an African-American child is in the womb.” People can watch it online here.

The abortion rate is disproportionately high in the black American community. Even though black Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population, 35 percent of the babies killed in abortions are black, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The black genocide of abortion is disturbingly evident in New York City, where state data shows more black babies are aborted than are born.

Many believe that Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities target black women for abortions. One analysis found that the abortion chain placed 79 percent of its abortion facilities within walking distance of minority neighborhoods.

“Planned Parenthood has taken it far beyond what the Klu Klux Klan thought they could possibly take it,” Childress said on the program. “How do you calm down over genocide?

“We need more African-Americans informed on the best kept secret in America; that is black genocide via the targeting of African Americans by the abortion industry,” he continued. . . .

[OF Course ...] A Planned Parenthood spokeswoman dismissed black pro-life advocates’ concerns completely, saying they are “fixated on shaming black women and controlling the bodies of black women.” . . . . . . Read More

New Trump Rule Allowing Small Businesses to Buy Healthcare Across State Lines is a Pro-Life Victory. ..

A new move by President Donald Trump to allow small businesses to band together and purchase health care across state lines will provide Americans with additional pro-life Healthcare options.

One of the biggest problems with Obamacare from the pro-life perspective is that many of the healthcare plans on the exchange fund abortions. In fact in some states there are no pro-life options for people to purchase health insurance as all of the healthcare plans on the exchange pay for abortions.

Not only is Obamacare proving unaffordable to millions of Americans—it is proving unconscionable for pro-life Americans who don’t want to pay for health care plans that cover abortion on demand or lack transparency about such coverage. By allowing business owners and small businesses to band together to purchase health insurance across state lines, they can purchase pro-life plans that do NOT pay for abortions.

Here’s more on what’s happening:
Small businesses and sole proprietors will be able to band together under a new federal rule to create employee health plans that would expand coverage options for 11 million uninsured Americans, senior Trump administration officials said.

The Labor Department rule allowing “association health plans,” placed Thursday in the Federal Register, builds on an executive order by President Donald Trump from October.

One senior Trump administration official said during a background briefing Wednesday that the association health plans will “level the playing field” between small businesses and large corporations and provide “more health care for more people at a lower cost.”
Currently, 8 million Americans employed by small businesses and another 3 million sole proprietors, who do business without employees, don’t have access to a group health insurance plan.

Entry on the Federal Register opens a 60-day public comment period, and the rule could be implemented as early as summer, officials said.

“The main objective of this effort is to expand choices for people who do not yet have insurance and [create] more options for employers and employees to take advantage of,” Robert Moffit, a senior fellow in health policy studies at The Heritage Foundation and a former assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, told The Daily Signal.

Those options include allowing businesses to find pro-life health care options. As LifeNews has reported, a total of 25 states have opted out of covering elective abortion on the Obamacare exchange. Elective abortion refers to abortion on demand and for any reason. The 25 remaining states (and the District of Columbia) permit elective abortion coverage in Obamacare plans. . . . Read More
